"I don't know where Rhett got the audacity to be a soldier," Scarlet scoffed aloud to anyone who cared to listen. "He'll get his brains blown out over some silly little war that isn't necessary in the first place."

"Not that I care, of course. For Lord's sake, if he desired to die, I'd pull the trigger myself." She wrung her hands free from the bucket of dirty laundry she was wrestling. "But he doesn't want to die, I'm quite sure of it. He has some whimsical notion of pride or adventure. That this is his civic duty."

She huffed, blowing stray strands of hair from her face.

"But I haven't the slightest idea why someone like him would care. What's the point of having all that money if you aren't going to use it?"

She shook her head and put her hands on her hips, glancing about before leaving the empty kitchen.
