While Catherine dined, Steve tried to call her, but without success. He got worried, wondered if there might have been something wrong with her, but at no moment did he think of her being with someone else.
Catherine had dinner, drank some juice and went back to her room. She took off her shoes and threw herself into bed exhausted. Her phone rang again and she saw it was Steve. She sighed and asked herself if she should answer or not.
"Hello," she answered and Steve was relieved.
"Hi, Cath! I've been trying to reach you for over an hour. I was really worried."
"Really?" She asked.
"Really," he answered, although he didn't understand why she asked.
"I was having dinner," she answered.
"Alone?" he asked. Catherine found it ironic that he asked her if she had dinner alone when she found out he had lived an affair in the middle of a mission.
"Of course, Steve. Who else would I be with?" She answered a little upset.
Steve noticed a thing of annoyance in her voice. "I'm sorry. I just..." he paused before continuing. "I just missed you so much."
As much as she wanted to, and as much as she was upset with him, she couldn't be hard on him. "It's okay, you don't have to apologize for that. I missed you too," she replied.
"Do you know when you'll be back?" he asked.
"Maybe the day after tomorrow. I'll have more work than I thought and I'll spend the whole day there tomorrow, and maybe I need to go back there the day after tomorrow too.
"Okay. I'm looking forward to your return. Can you promise me you'll be safe?"
"I'll be safe. Okay?" She said.
"Okay. Good night, Cath."
"Good night, Steve."
After he finished the call, Catherine hugged her pillow and let some tears roll. "Why, Steve?"
The next day, Catherine went to try to finish the job so she wouldn't have to go back there on the third day. She got in the elevator and the doors were already closing when someone stopped them. Greer got in the elevator and smiled cynically when she saw Catherine. "Hello, Lieutenant Rollins? How are you today?"
"I'm really great, what about you?" Catherine smiled and wouldn't let Gree bother her anymore, because that's what Greer wanted. Greer wanted to hurt her and humiliate her.
"I'm fine, too. And how is McGarrett?" Greer asked.
"He's great, too. We talked yesterday and he said he's missing me a lot. And I miss him too, but I hope to see him soon," Catherine answered. "Oh, this is my floor. Have a good day at work, Agent Greer." Catherine got off the elevator and let Greer consume himself with her own grudge. "Steve will still pay dearly for leaving me, no matter how long it takes," Greer vowed to take revenge.
Catherine chased away the bad thoughts and concentrated on her work and managed to finish everything by the end of the day. She returned to the hotel, had dinner, called her mother and then Steve, watched TV and then slept. The next day she woke up early, had breakfast and then did some shopping before boarding back home.
Hours later, when she disembarked, she called Steve and asked him to pick her up at the airport. "Cath, I'm sorry, but I can't pick you up at the airport."
"But why? Are you still at the base?" she asked.
"No," he just answered.
Catherine was even more upset with him. "Okay, Steve. I get by," she answered and ended the call abruptly.
Catherine took a cab and went home. She entered her building and took the elevator, went down on her floor and stopped in front of the apartment door. She didn't know how she would look at Steve without imagining him with Greer. She took a deep breath and opened the door, but the apartment was dark. "He's not even home!" She thought and was on the verge of tears when she took a few steps towards the living room. Tears fell when she saw a table set and Steve sitting at the table. "Hey," he said when he saw her.
"What's that, Steve?" She asked.
Steve stood up and hugged her fondly. "A candlelight dinner. I thought you'd be hungry. I'm sorry I didn't pick you up at the airport, the fish was in the oven."
"Oh, Steve..." She let the tears flow, and he thought she was thrilled.
"Why are you crying? It's just a dinner. Come here," he pulled her into a tight hug and they kissed eagerly. Catherine decided not to think about Greer anymore and not to believe the things she said. Steve was hers now, and that's what mattered.
