When Steve woke up the next day, Catherine was no longer in bed. He got up and went to the living room and saw her sitting on one of the chairs on the beach.
"What happened between you two yesterday?" John asked him. John was setting the table for breakfast.
"Did you hear it, dad?" Steve asked.
"I didn't hear anything. But she doesn't look very happy today," John replied.
"She's upset about Jenny Feldman. Catherine wanted me to tell Jenny that she is my girlfriend." Steve took a cup and put some coffee in it.
"But isn't she? What was the problem with saying?" John didn't understand.
"Catherine has no labels for me, Dad. And I didn't think she was going to be upset. Summary of the story: if you had a dog I would sleep in the doghouse yesterday."
John laughed at Steve. "And she would be absolutely right if she would sent you to the doghouse."
Steve laughed too. "Are you going to defend her? Your child is me."
"Putting the joke aside, Steve, I think you owe her an apology. You hurt her."
"You're right, dad. I'm going to talk to her." Steve went to the kitchen, made hot chocolate and took it to her. He came over and kissed her head affectionately. "Good morning, Cath."
"Good morning, Steve." She replied without much enthusiasm.
"I brought you creamy hot chocolate. I know you like it, your mom told me."
"Thanks." She took the cup and drank some of the chocolate while looking at the horizon. She didn't think Steve cared as much about her as she thought. She thought her feelings were much greater than his.
Steve sat in the other chair and looked at the horizon too. He rubbed both hands on his legs as a sign of nervousness and then looked at her. "Cath, don't be mad. Jenny means nothing to me. The person who occupies my thoughts from the time I wake up until the moment I go to sleep is you. Happiness doesn't need labels to exist and I think that I am living happy moments with you. We are not going to put barriers on our relationship. When there is a feeling and it is true, everything happens naturally."
"Are you trying to say that you like me?" She asked looking him in the eye.
"I am," he replied.
Catherine got up and sat on his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck while she still held the cup. "It's nice to hear that from time to time," she told him.
"You know I'm not good with words, and you also know how I like you, I like being with you." They looked into each other's eyes and Steve smiled. "We speak by looking, it is a harmony that nobody understands, our thing ... Only ours." Steve kissed her until they ran out of breath.
From the kitchen, John looked at them and smiled. He went upstairs and got ready to go to work.
Six days later, Steve and John took Catherine to the airport. She would spend the rest of her break with her parents and Steve would still be with John for a few days.
"Mr. McGarrett, don't let Jenny get close to him, and thanks for staying at your place." Catherine hugged John. She was grateful that he treated her so well and encouraged the relationship between her and Steve.
"You're welcome, Catherine. You can leave it to me. I'll keep her away from him and vice versa. And I hope you come back again."
"Thank you, Mr. McGarrett. It was great to meet you."
"What about me? Don't I even get a kiss goodbye?" Steve told her.
Catherine hugged him and kissed him. "See you at home."
"Have fun, and tell your parents that I said hello" Steve told her.
"I will say," she kissed him once more and headed for the departure gate. She waved at Steve and John for the last time.
"Great girl, son. You chose very well." John put his hand on Steve's shoulder and Steve just nodded.
Catherine boarded and Steve and John returned home. They spent the rest of the day trying fix the John's car, and in the late afternoon, Chin arrived at John's house with a few beers.
"Chin Ho?" Steve was surprised when he opened the door. He and Chin studied at the same school and had not seen each other in a long time.
"Steve, it's good to see you. John asked me to come over here. He said he would make some snacks and I brought the beer."
"Great, Chin. Come in, please." Steve opened the door a little more so that Chin could pass. He felt happy and a little jealous at the same time. Happy because John had friends and jealous because John had taken him away from home and was seeing a schoolmate.
"I didn't know you knew my dad, Chin."
"I'm at the Police Academy and I met him there. Your dad is a great cop, Steve," Chin replied.
"That's true. He always was." Steve called John who was still in the garage and John remembered that he had invited Chin.
"Chin, forgive me, I was messing with the car and I lost track of time. In the morning we went to take Steve's girl to the airport and then we went to garage and we forget the time. I'm still going to prepare the snacks. "
"It's okay, John. Me and Steve can help you," Chin replied and Steve agreed. "Of course, let's catch up."
They spent a pleasant afternoon, talked a lot, and ate and drank. Steve walked away to talk on the phone when Catherine called him.
"It must be his girl on the phone," Chin said to John.
"Yes, it's her. I know because of his silly smile. She looks like a great girl, I liked her a lot and I hope she makes my son very happy."
