Arc 1: Chapter 1: This so wasn't in the job description
-A few months after the battle with RustTyrannomon-
You know things are wonky with the universe when you wake up in another country across the world. It's even crazier when you're not even in your own world any longer. Thank god the DDF has a plan for any eventuality, no matter how crazy it may seem at times.
When I first awoke I had found myself in Japan of all places. I'm glad I took those language courses now, no matter how much of a pain it was to learn Japanese in the first place. I'm still pretty ignorant of the culture knowing only what I managed to pull from an anime here or there, but I managed to secure housing and I had a source of income thanks to Kit, as an English teacher of all things.
The first stirring of something weird going on began when the news started reporting abnormal climate conditions the world over. Desert towns suddenly flooded, Cities, normally hot as hades were suddenly freezing cold, and other strange weather phenomena. When I had heard of these things happening it raised all sorts of red flags in my head. But there was nothing that I could do about it.
Somehow through work I had been roped into acting as a chaperone for a group of kids at a summer camp. They were all mostly kids I had interacted with over the course of my job, as a teacher's aide.
First, there was Taichi Kamiya or Tai as he liked to be called. He was a good kid. He had a tendency to slack off on his school work. So I found myself usually being pretty strict with him, but somehow he thrived under that pressure. He was the adventurous sort, always climbing a tree or playing soccer, or football if you'd prefer, I'm American, sue me. That kid had the potential to be a great leader someday.
Next was Sora Takenouchi. Also a good kid. She was a bit of a tomboy. Apparently she and Tai had been friends for years. She was an incredibly kind girl, who managed to get along with just about everybody, she was also pretty strict with Tai, something we kind of bonded with each other over. Apparently she had an eye for talent.
Next was Koushiro Izumi, sometimes called Izzy. That kid was scary smart, that he managed to hack into the school database at his age still astounds me. He was a bit socially awkward, and didn't make friends easily. If he were older, the DDF would have scouted him for sure.
Next was Yamato Ishida, often called Matt by his friends. He was the stereotypical cool kid at school. A lot of the other kids look up to him as some kind of role model, which isn't such a bad thing, really. The kid has a responsibility complex a mile wide, it leaves him to take the fall for a lot of things that he otherwise might not have, if a friend was in danger, he'd be there in a heartbeat. Another potential leader, this causes a lot of tension between him and Tai.
Next was Mimi Tachikawa. She was the stereotypical queen bee, you know what I mean. She is always up to date on the latest gossip around the school, if something happens she is usually the first to know. No one has a clue how. She has a lot of expectations thrust on her, what's weird though is that I know the version of her from my own world, she's older of course, but the girl I see before me and the woman I knew from my days training with the DDF are totally different people. I still see snippets here and there, but it's like she's hiding herself. I have resolved myself to help her reach the potential I know she has. USDDF (1) Director Tachikawa would never forgive me if I didn't.
Finally, the last of the kids I've worked with is Joe Kido. The kid wants to be a doctor, so he's alway studying some kind of medical book. The kid seems afraid of his own shadow sometimes. Another of the people I know from my days with the DDF again his counterpart was the head of medical staff for most of the USDDF. So I know he has the potential.
But the last kid assigned to my group was Takeru Takaishi ro T.K.
I'll admit I don't know much about him other than he's Yamato's younger brother. He seems like a good kid himself, he's been clinging to his brother's side the entire trip so far.
But that's it for introductions so far. Right now I'm sitting next to Izzy on the steps of a cabin as he tries desperately to get his computer to connect with the internet.
'Good luck kiddo,' I chuckle to myself. I lean back to enjoy the sun. The kids are all around the place just doin their own thing. The weather was great. The sun shining, the birds singing, the wind rustling the trees. Just a great summer day.
Then everything snowballed, literally! It started with a single snowflake. I blinked 'What?" I thought.
My digivice pinged three times, an emergency message. I flipped it open. 'James I've detected a digital disturbance,' the message read. My eyes widened. Suddenly a light snowfall turned into a blizzard.
"Crap! Everyone inside the cabin!," I called.
"Yes Sensei!" the kids replied. They all rushed inside as the snow swirled around us.
"What's with this snow!" Tai called.
I looked out a window. "More like a Blizzard Tai," I said.
It was really coming down out there. And the temperature was dropping, not enough to be dangerous, but it was dropping all the same.
"Everyone you should all get bundled up as best you can, Joe In my metal case are some extra blankets I packed just in case start passing them out to everyone," I said.
"Yes sensei," Joe replied, and went to do just that.
"Did everyone remember to bring warmer clothes with them," I asked.
The kids answered in the positive. They all remembered to pack at least a jacket. Better than nothing. Good thing the cabin had a fireplace and a stock of wood. Soon I had a fire going and the temperature stabilized. It was getting dark now. The Blizzard had been raging for a few hours now. We all had some warm food and settled in for the night. The kids all took a free bunk and I took a cot I had packed, again just in case, us DDF members were paranoid like that. It wasn't long before we fell asleep.
The next morning -
The situation grew better by the time morning arrived it was still cold but the sun was shining, that was a plus. I had awoken during the night to stoke the fire. All that was left were embers now so it should be alright to let the fire die.
"Did everyone sleep alright," I got sleepy nods and affirmatives. "Good let's get everything around, they're probably not going to keep us here any longer, since the campgrounds aren't really prepared for a winter camping situation," I started packing my things in my camping bag. I had everything I needed before too long.
"Sensei you gotta see this!" Tai's voice called.
I stepped outside and looked up, an Aurora. However, as beautiful as it was, it filled me with unease, it reminded me of the earlier encounters with wild digimon, the rapid climate change, and inclement weather that proceed immense digital activity. I gripped my digivice in uneasy anticipation. I would be ready for anything that happens. Hopefully.
Then there was a flash. And a massive green portal opened in the sky.
"Hey what's that?" Tai asked curiously.
Seven motes of light flashed across the sky heading for the kids. They impacted the ground in front of them, throwing up a cloud of dust and snow.
I rushed toward the kids.
"Are you all alright?" I aske.
I got various replies in confirmation. I sighed in relief.
"Meteors?" I heard Izzy ask.
'I doubt that, Izzy' I thought. But I was curious, I had never heard of anything like this happening before.
Then light began to shine out of the holes where the lights impacted. In short order the children were the owners of some startling familiar objects.
'No freaking Way!' I thought in astonishment. 'Digivices. Old models at that,'
"No Instructions?" Tai asked. Suddenly a massive wall of water erupts from a nearby lake.
"Forget the Instructions! Surf's up!" He yelled.
Despite the situation I facepalmed "Really Tai?" I groaned as I was pulled along with the children into a portal that opened in the water. I blacked out. Again.
