Chapter Sixteen
She wakes up to the bed shifting, she rolls over to see Jason sat on the edge of the bed, putting his uniform back on. "You're leaving?"
He turns around, looking at her. She grabs his arm, "you can't stay just a little while longer?"
"I'm sorry. But I have to go. We have to say goodbye." She shakes her head, and he grabs her face, kissing her chastely. "I will always love you, and that's why I have to let you go."
She shakes her head again, her eyes welling with tears. "I want the best for you and our child."
He gets up from the bed, climbing out her window. And with that he was gone, possibly forever.
She didn't get much sleep that night. Kat comes back to the room shortly after Jason leaves, settling in on her couch. And Kimberly lays awake for most of the night, never staying asleep for more than thirty minutes at a time. Around 6:00, there's a knock at the door. Kat sits up, rushing to answer the door. As Kat greets whoever is at the door, Kimberly gets up, putting a dress on. It was clear that she wasn't going to fall asleep any time soon.
"Tommy, what are you doing here?"
"Did Jason come back here by any chance?"
"No. Why? Isn't he in the guards' quarters?"
"No. He's not in his section, and I can't think of anywhere else he would be."
"Jason's missing?" They both jump, looking at her, clearly unsure of what to say.
"He's probably fine. We're just going to see Dr. Campbell to be sure." Tommy looks at Kat, as if silently asking her to back him up.
"Yes." The three of them leave the room, heading to the infirmary. "Dr. Campbell?"
Dr. Campbell comes out of her office, rubbing her eyes as if she'd just been sleeping. "What are you doing so early?"
She says this before yawning. They must be staring, as she then says. "What? I just fell asleep reading a book in my office. Now why are you?"
"We were hoping you could help us find Jason. He seems to have disappeared." Kat says.
Dr. Campbell rolls her eyes, walking back into her office. She returns a minute later with a giant book. "If I can't find him with this, then you'll have reason to worry."
She lays the book down on a table with a thud. The book opens on its own, and Dr. Campbell waves her hands over the pages. Her eyes are squeezed shut, and blood begins to drip from her nose. The lights begin to flicker on and off, before wind starts to blow around the room.
"What's happening?!" Kimberly shouts. The book begins to fly around the room, before flying out the window. Dr. Campbell collapses to the floor, the wind stops blowing and the lights stop flickering.
"Dr. Campbell?" They all rush to the now unconscious doctor.
"Now what do we do?" Kat asks.
"The amulet." Dr. Campbell groans, sitting up. "If the book can't help, the amulet is the only option left."
"Well, where is it?" Tommy asks.
Dr. Campbell bites her lip. "The amulet once belonged to the king, and what happened to it after he died-"
"It's with my mother, isn't it?"
"I think so, yes."
"Princess." Kat rushes to catch up with her. "Maybe you should think about this?"
"Think about what? My mother has the amulet, and that's the only chance we have left to find Jason."
"Yes but… what are you even going to say to her?" She stops, as she has to admit that Kat does have a good point. How was she going to explain why she needed the medallion without telling her things she'd rather her mother didn't know? And what if Jason really was alright? She didn't want to think about the things the queen would have done to him.
"There is no other choice." And with that, she walks to her mother's door. She knocks on the door, "mom?"
Her mother comes to the door, confusedly ushering her inside. "What is it, sweetheart?"
"I need to ask you something."
"Okay." Her mother says slowly.
"I need daddy's amulet."
Her mother's eyes widened, before quickly regaining her composure. But stoicism seemed much more fake than usual. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You're lying."
"Don't take that tone with me."
Kimberly takes a deep breath. "Please, Jason needs it."
"Jason? You've still been seeing him?" She bites her lip. "You have! How could you do this?!"
She closes her eyes, biting her tongue. "Answer me! Look at me when I talk to you!"
She opens her eyes, clenching her fists, finally having enough. "After all that I've done for you, this is how you-"
"All that you've done for me?! All you've done is make my life miserable!"
"Don't shout at me! I am your mother, and I'm doing what is best for you."
"You are keeping me from the man I love, and the father of my child." Her mother's eyes widen, and it dawns on her what she just said.
"You-" her mother backs up, eventually backing right into a table. Several objects from the table, clatter onto the floor. One of those objects is a red stone.
"What is that?"
Her mother quickly goes to grab it, but Kimberly grabs it first. (Those lessons from the guards were finally starting to pay off.) "Is this the amulet?"
"No. It's nothing." Her mother's voice was raised in pitch, which only proved her suspicions.
"It is. You lied to me."
"Sweetheart, just give it back. There are certain things you just don't understand."
"You're right. There are certain things that I don't understand. But what I do understand is that you have prevented me from being with the man I love. And when we were together, we lived in fear of what you would do to us if you found out. And we were proven right when you separated us, and forbade us from seeing each other. And you killed his mother."
"How did you know about that?"
"So it's true. You killed Jason's mother."
"She wasn't supposed to die. The attack was meant for his father, but something went wrong. You have to understand that it was for the best. Witches, they will only hurt us. You have to trust me." Kimberly turns to walk out of the room. "I'm your mother!"
"I don't have a mother anymore." And with that, she walks out of the room.
