Chapter 2

As Maya continued eating her breakfast, she could feel the stare of the gigantic wolf spirit towering above her. She knew that it could sense her just as well as she could sense it.

'He's strong,' she analyzed. 'So, what is it afraid of?'

Maya watched as the gigantic wolf spirit let out a sound that was a cross between a whine and a growl. Maya looked at her review mirror and frowned. It was looking at the dark mass of cloud hanging over Forks. Her eyes widened when something zoomed past her mirror. She looked towards the forest to see nothing. She felt something inside her hum in response. Knowing who it might be, she closed the windows and continued drinking her orange juice. A voice piped up from the back.

"Are we going to the house?" Will asked.

"I have to meet up with the real estate agent first to get the keys," Maya answered as she placed her glass cup in the cup holder.

"Then we're going to the house?" Will asked.

Maya laughed. "Maybe. I asked the real estate agent to meet in La Push instead of her office, so hopefully we'll get to see the house after."

Will and John nodded. When they finished eating, the two went to do the dishes while Maya drove into the city of La Push. Once the dishes were toweled dried and put away, John pushed the red button above the large silver bowl. A hole opened at the bottom as water was ejected underneath the moving car. Rinsing down the sides of the bowl with a bit more of the rainwater, John watched as the suds disappeared down the hole. He then pushed the button again as the hole closed. Taking a Lysol spray, he sprayed the bowl and wiped it down with a clean towel.

He placed the towel in the hamper when Maya said, "Buckle up."

Maya placed her feet on the floor of the car as she sat more upright. John lifted one of the backseats up as he helped buckled in Will. He walked towards the passenger seat and sat down. Once it swiveled back to the front, John placed his seatbelt on. The space inside the car returned to its normal size as the table shrunk. Underneath Will's seat was a tiny toy sized table. In the trunk of the car was a tiny toy sized fridge beside an even smaller shelf with a toaster. Both fridge and toaster were still hooked onto a toy sized solar power converter. The large silver bowl was now a tiny silver bowl with a red button and three barrels.

As the trees got thinner, they passed by a few buildings. Maya pulled into a parking lot and set it on park. Turning to look at them, she asked, "Did you guys want to come with or look around?"

John and Will looked at one another then to Maya. "Look around," they said simultaneously.

Maya laughed. "Okay." They both grinned in excitement. As they exited the car, Maya said, "Remember, don't-."

"Get separated, and if anything happens, howl," John and Will recited together.

"We know, Maya," John said.

"Yeah, we got this, Mama," Will nodded in agreement as he puffed up his chest.

Maya laughed. "Okay then. Have fun you two."

The two grinned and took off towards the streets. Maya looked at their retreating figures with slight concern. John's wolf spirit had Will's small pup spirit in its mouth as it walked alongside John and Will. Appearing from nowhere, three large golden wolves appeared beside Maya. They all rubbed against her before running towards John and Will. They settled to a formation. The largest wolf was in front, while the smallest two took the back.

'Just in case,' Maya thought to herself.

When she could no longer see them, she opened the trunk to grab a black briefcase. Ensuring that the car was locked, she entered a small white building. Written at the top of the building were the words: Quileute Tribal Council.

As she entered the building, she paused to see a giant hand carved wooden wolf in the middle of the room. On a placard underneath it was:

Donated by Quil Ateara IV, owner of Little Carvers, a local store selling hand carved wooden figurines. Quil Ateara IV was a beloved member of the Quileute tribe and will always be remembered.

Maya looked at the placard in thought as she looked around the rest of the lobby. There were two halls on either side of the lobby. On the right was a hall with a wooden sign hanged across it. It read: Meeting Rooms. The other hall had the sign: Restrooms. Hanging on the walls were photos with little captions. As she walked towards the closest photo, Maya could not distinguish much in it. It was grainy and in black and white. What she could make out were three men sitting outside of the steps of a front porch. Underneath was the caption:

Quil Ateara II (left) Chief Ephraim Black (middle) Levi Uley (right)

She moved onto the next photo. This time it was in color, though it looked quite faded. It was set of four men. Maya brows furrowed as she went to look at the previous photo, then back to the colored one. The four men in the colored photo were sitting outside the same porch as the first photo. In the photo, the man on the left had two small braids in his hair. Two of the men in the middle had cowboy hats. The one on the left had a low ponytail and a black cowboy hat on. The other had his hair pulled back into a single braid that looped over the front of his shoulder. He was holding onto a white hat. The last man on the right had wavy shoulder length hair. Underneath was the caption:

Quil III (left) Chief William Black Senior (left middle) Douglas Uley (right middle) Daniel Clearwater (right)

Maya moved onto the next photo. This one was clearer, and the colors were more vibrant. It had three young men. Everyone was sitting on the same porch as the first two photos she had seen. On the left was a man who had two braids, similar to the previous photo. Maya could see the small wooden beads between the segments of the braids. Next to him was a man with long black hair. He had a black cowboy hat on and was smiling widely at the camera. The man next to him had a hunting cap on. Maya could see the wavy hair poking out from the sides of the cap. Underneath was the caption:

Quil IV (left) Chief William 'Billy' Black (middle) Harry Clearwater (right)

Maya turned to look around the lobby to see if she could find anyone from the real estate firm. Finding no one, turned to look at a framed map next to the photos. There, along the edges of the boundary line between Forks and La Push was a plot of land. Ironically, it was labeled as No Man's Land on the map. But she knew otherwise.

A female's voice was heard behind her, "Are you Maya Wong?"

Maya turned around to see a female Caucasian. She had black square glasses surrounding her blue eyes. Her blonde hair was tied into a high ponytail. She was dressed in a long pencil skirt, a black boot, and a frilly white blouse. She was walking towards Maya as if she was in a rush to be elsewhere.

"I am," Maya said, noting that the lady looked a bit relieved but still annoyed to be here.

"I'm Jenny Thompson. I believe we talked on the phone," the lady said as her red lips stretched into a smile. Maya recognized a plastered smile when she saw one.

Despite the fake smile, Maya nodded, recognizing the name. "I remember. The real estate agent from Port Angeles, correct?"

Jenny grumbled but nodded. "Yes. If you can follow me, I can give you the keys after we've signed a few documents."

Maya saw her turn around the way she came from, not so much as a glance back. Maya tightened her hold on her briefcase and followed Jenny towards an opened room inside a small meeting room. Once they were seated, Maya was presented with a stack of papers. Grabbing a pen from the side pocket of her briefcase, Maya set her briefcase on the table and read through the stack of papers. She ignored Jenny, who let out a none-to-silent huff followed by her nails tapping along the tabletop. Maya kept on reading. Her eyes narrowed in on the last sentence:

Port Angeles Real Estate is not liable to any emotional, mental, or physical damage to any person(s) who reside in or on the property.

'What an odd statement,' Maya thought as she signed the bottom of the document and dated it. Jenny handed her two sets of keys.

"Thank you for doing business with Port Angeles Real Estate, Ms. Wong," Jenny said as she got up. Walking towards the back of the room, Jenny began making copies of the paperwork. Not turning around, she continued, "As we've discussed on the phone, while the property you now own is not part of the Quileute Reservation, the only road that goes to it is through the reservation."

Maya nodded, "I remember."

Jenny nodded and gathered the paperwork from the printer. She handed Maya her copy. "Thank you for everything, Mrs. Thompson," Maya said. "I was surprised when I received the call that I was approved to buy the property."

Jenny gave Maya a small weak smile before perking up and said, "Well, we've been trying our hardest to sell that property for a while now. You were the only one who seemed interested. Have a great day Ms. Wong."

Maya watched Jenny left in a haste. She looked at the pair of keys in her hands and frowned. They both had identical intricate designs. While the notches of the keys were that of a normal key, the bow of the keys had two wooden symmetrical loops encircling a pearl like orb. The keys looked like they have been cleaned recently, but Maya could still see the layers of dust stuck inside the crevices. She frowned and placed the keys inside the pocket inside her shoes, ensuring to zip the pocket closed.

She exited the meeting room and walked out to the lobby. In the far corner was a small information desk. Behind the desk was a male receptionist who looked to be in his early twenties. He was sitting on a chair looking rather bored. He was dressed in a tan buttoned up shirt and had long shoulder length hair.

Walking towards the information desk, the receptionist quickly straightened as Maya stopped in front of him. She asked, "Do you know how I can get to Little Carvers?"

"Of course," the receptionist said as he flashed Maya a smile. As he pulled out a map of La Push, he asked, "Are you new around here?"

"My family and I just moved here," Maya said as the receptionist began drawing directions from the council building to the wooden figurines shop.

"Oh," the receptionist said, "Where to?"

"Forks," Maya replied.

The receptionist grinned. "That's awesome," he gave her the map. "Maybe I can show you around some time."

Maya ignored his smile and took the map, "Thank you for the directions."

The receptionist grumbled as he watched her walk away.

Once in her car, Maya placed the map on her steering wheel. Grabbing her pen from the side pocket, she twisted one end of it to reveal a yellow highlighter. Maya drew on the map towards the directions of the house using what she had remembered from the big map in the lobby. Putting the highlighter back, she paused to debate whether to text John. Figuring that she would text him when she actually found the house, she put the car on reverse and followed the map.

Remembering that she had a follower, Maya went to the side to pass a large moving truck that stood between her and her pursuers. However, staying in the truck's blind spot, she flicked a switch in the middle of her car console.

--

Following in the tree line, Paul's eyes widened when he saw no black sedan passing the moving truck. In fact, there was no cars driving alongside it at all. It was as if the black sedan had disappeared entirely when it went to pass the truck.

'What the hell just happened?' Jared asked.

Paul narrowed his eyes. His wolf was not happy. It was growling loudly inside of him, to the point where he can feel the vibrations. 'I don't know.'

The two reverted back to their human forms and walked towards street when the truck disappeared.

"Where the fuck did she go?" Paul growled. He could smell her still and it ended where he was standing. His wolf was furious and confused.

"Come on Paul," Jared said. "Maybe we need the others to help look for her."

Paul let out a low growl but nodded and followed Jared.

--

Maya felt the humming in her go away as she passed a wooden house with dull red paint. She recognized the porch from the photos in the lobby. Everything was the same, except instead of stairs, there was a ramp going up to the porch. Slowing down, she looked at the map and saw that the path she drew went around the corner of the street. Putting the map on her briefcase, Maya turned right.

As she continued down the road, she stopped seeing any buildings or houses and found herself surrounded by trees. She heard a loud whine coming from the gigantic wolf spirit above her. Eyes narrowing, Maya slowly drove forward. The cement road ended, and a dirt path started. The trees cleared as she saw the house emerging. It was a two-story wooden house with an upstairs balcony, and a front porch. Two large black medal gates were barely supported by two brick pillars. The brick pillars had a few gaping holes.

Maya's eyes widened and slammed on the brake pedal when she saw the house. The car stopped past a medal mailbox. It was on an old wooden pole covered in bluish green moss. The white paint was chipping away. The red mailbox flag was hanging loosely, pointing all the way down. The dirt path she was on led up to the large black medal gates. A light in the attic flickered off then on then off again. Maya blinked and looked at the house again just to be sure. No lights turned on this time. In fact, the house looked warm and inviting, but Maya knew better.

Maya internally cursed as she carefully and silently put the car on reverse. She winced when she heard the tires crunching against the dirt. Maya saw something move in the shrubs close to the gates.

"Shit," she said as she slammed on the gas pedal.

The car shot backwards as Maya kept her eyes in front of her. There, crawling out of the bushes was a white creature with its head attached the wrong way and crab crawling towards her at a fast speed. Once the car passed the mailbox, Maya saw her chance and unbuckled her seatbelt. The driver door swung opened as she jumped out of the car. As the door closed behind her, Maya ran towards the mailbox. The red flag was slightly glowing.

'It'll have to do,' she thought.

A large golden staff appeared behind her as she grabbed it and rammed it onto the ground in front of her. Just in time too as she felt more than see the weakened barrier around the house being reinforced. She cursed at herself for not recognizing remnants of the barrier in the first place. The creature slammed into the barrier and roared in fury. She frowned when she saw more creatures running towards her. One was extremely tall with gray toned face and small beady eyes. Its mouth showed off pointy teeth. One had a long pointy black tail swishing back and forth. It only had a nose and a mouth, no eyes. They were all gathering around where she was standing, but each time they touched the barrier, they yelled out. Black smoke came off their skin.

As her car stopped behind her, she leaned back to sit. Her car hummed underneath her fingertips. Maya's eyes widened when the creatures reacted in a frenzy as they sniffed harder and deeper.

'They can still smell me,' she thought as she opened her palms and the golden staff disappeared. The barrier still holding strong.

Maya narrowed her eyes at the house towards the mailbox in thought. "I wonder," she muttered.

Maya scooched back towards the hood of the car and sat cross legged. She placed her hands on her knees, took in a deep breath, and closed her eyes. She let the breath go. When she let her breath go, she was bombarded by so many sounds. She heard the chirping of an ant talking to another ant, and the fluttering movements of the feathers of a hummingbird as it flickered in the trees. Maya took in a breath again to focus. With her eyes closed, she reached her senses out towards the house. She could feel them. They were there, but very weak and extremely terrified. But there.

Maya opened her eyes only to gasp in surprise. A large black, red eyed creature that looked like a wolf was in front of her. Not behind the barrier. Its mouth was filled with black ooze. Maya blinked and the wolf was gone. Sighing, Maya slid off the hood of her car. She walked around the car to the passenger side and opened the door. Maya paused to look up at the gigantic wolf spirit standing over La Push. It was whining at her. Ignoring it, she put the map aside and grabbed her briefcase to sit down. With one leg stretched out to keep her door open, she unzipped her briefcase. Multiple thick files were shown. Maya propped those forward with a finger as she grabbed a small pink envelope in the back.

She pulled out the enveloped and zipped the briefcase closed. She lifted the flap to pull out a small white card. She opened the card, then looked back to the house. Taking her pen from the side pocket of the briefcase, she punctured her forefinger. As her blood coated the tip, she wrote one word in the card:

Safe?

Maya placed the card back inside the pink envelope. Keeping the flap closed, she dripped three drops of her blood on the flap, creating a seal. Bring her finger to her lips to suck her blood, Maya exited the car and walked towards the mailbox. She ignored the creatures as she plucked out a strand of hair. Placing the sealed card between her lips, Maya tied a knot on the top hook of the lid to the mailbox door. Taking a deep breath, she pulled her strand of hair down with both hands.

The mailbox opened to reveal a swirling portal of blues and purples. Maya peered into the swirling vortex and frowned. She could see a bit of black inside the swirls. Muttering to herself, Maya bent her left feet up behind her. She pinched the back of her combat boots and pulled out a white downy feather. Plucking a hair from her head again, she tied the feather onto the card. She watched as she dropped the sealed card into the swirling vortex. The feather glowed as it started to multiply in great numbers. Maya could see a pair of wings forming as the pink card took flight. Smiling at the success, Maya pulled her strand of hair up, closing the mailbox. She flipped the red flag upright.

Feeling hungry, Maya walked towards the trunk of her car. Once she opened it, she saw her plastic bin of snacks. Maya opened a bag of chips to snack on as she made a sandwich. Seeing the cooler, she opened it to see a glass of freshly poured orange juice. She took it out of the cooler and began drinking. Every now and then, she would pop her head to check the mailbox only to frown. More creatures keep gathering. Stronger ones this time. One had a long-forked tongue, while another had two large ram horns and just a nose. No eyes or mouth.

'Something is allowing them to get stronger,' she thought as she bit into her sandwich.

Her eyes lit up when the red flag of the mailbox dropped down. This time it stayed parallel to the road rather than perpendicular. She took a swig of her orange juice and waited a few seconds before walking towards the mailbox. Maya pulled her strand of hair down to open the mailbox. The swirling vortex spat out a small pine green envelope. She caught it as it floated in front of her. Seeing a leaf sealing the envelope closed, she closed the mailbox. Turning towards the car, she broke the seal and opened the envelope. Inside was a brown card. In golden letters, it read:

Safe.

'That's good,' she thought as she walked back to the passenger side while putting the card back into the envelope.

Sitting down at the seat again, she opened her briefcase and placed the card in the front. She propped the files forward again to pull out a red envelope. Lifting the flap, another white card was shown. Taking the same pen from before, Maya wrote:

Where?

She placed the card inside the envelope. Going towards the trunk, she paused to pick up some dirt. With her fist enclosed around the dirt, she blew on it. Keeping the flap closed, she sprinkled some of the dirt onto it, sealing the envelope. Once at her trunk, she pushed her plastic bins away. Flipping one corner of the carpet up, Maya pulled out a bow and arrow. Pulling out another strand of hair, she tied the envelope to the arrow. Setting the arrow on it's notch, Maya walked in front of the still closed mailbox. Maya took in a breath and raised her arms, stretching the string of the bow. When she let her breath go, so did her fingers. It flew towards the closed mailbox. As the arrow got closer, the mailbox door swung opened. A black bird with oozing wings appeared at the entrance, only to be impaled by the arrow. As the bird dropped into the vortex, the letter released from the arrow and made its slow descent into the swirling vortex. Maya walked towards the mailbox and closed it before flipping the red flag upright.

Walking back to her trunk, Maya placed the bow back underneath the carpet. She grabbed her bag of chips and poked her head out to look at the mailbox. Placing a large chip in her mouth, she saw the red flag go down. Putting the bag back into the trunk, she brushed her hands together to get rid of the crumbs. Maya walked towards the mailbox and pulled her strand of hair down. The swirling vortex of purples and blues now had mixtures of pinks. No black was seen. Floating just on the edge of the mailbox in front of her was another pine green envelope. Maya grabbed and it closed the mailbox. Flipping it over, she saw that a small dusting feather was used to seal the envelope. Maya broke the seal and lifted a flap to reveal a golden card. Maya pulled it out. In brown lettering, it read:

Attic.

'That's where I saw the light,' she thought as she placed the card back inside. 'That's also a dead end. A stronghold, but a dead end nonetheless.'

Maya walked towards the passenger seat again. Instead of getting in the car, she opened her briefcase to place the pine green envelope in the front. Closing it back up, she pulled a small note card from the back pocket and wrote:

Going exploring. Be back soon.

~ Love, Maya

Maya put a date at the bottom corner of the note card and placed it face up on the dashboard. Closing the driver door, she walked towards the trunk of the car to close it. When her fingers lifted off the car, the car locked itself and began reversing itself on the dirt path towards the main road. There it shut itself off. Maya walked towards the creatures. She can hear them sniffing deeply and snarling. Maya turned to the left and walked along the barrier. The creatures followed as closely as they dared without getting burnt by the barrier.
