Chapter 3

Maya entered the tree line of the forest as she continued along the perimeter of the barrier. The deeper she walked, the more the creatures gathered. Maya kept walking until she stopped at the border where Forks met La Push. She narrowed her eyes. The green grass on La Push's side were deeper and vividly green, compared to the ground on Forks' side, which did not have grass at all. It was just plain dirt. All that grew were hardy weeds that were starting to die off. The trees on La Push's side were full and lush while the ones on Forks' side were scraggly and bare.

'It's worst than I thought,' Maya thought as she turned to look at the creatures behind the barrier. They were looking at her with hungry eyes. She saw trails of crushed grass behind them. 'They're strong enough now to affect the physical plane.'

Recalling the last line in the document to the house when she signed for it, she muttered to herself, "That passage makes sense now. A normal human cannot see or feel these creatures, usually."

Maya narrowed her eyes when the creatures all lifted their heads and took a few sniffs. Looking in one direction all at once, they took off back towards La Push.

Maya cursed and sprinted after the creatures. 'Someone must've passed the barrier.'

Appearing behind her, four large golden translucent wolves appeared. They gained momentum as soon as their paws hit the forest floor and ran passed her. A fifth one ran beside her, solidifying into a golden brown wolf with a light underbelly. Maya grabbed its fur and hoisted herself up to wrap her legs around the back of the wolf. Leaning forward, the two took off after the rest of the golden wolves.

--

Crashing into a clearing full of spring meadows was a sandy colored wolf with oversized paws. He was running, frantic. 'What is this? Where am I?'

He was disoriented from images of trees passing by in his mind, despite being sure that he had not done so. The wolf then remembered what had occurred in his family living room. It started off with his dad asking a question, then Leah began yelling, and the next thing he knew was seeing his sister…burst? Transform?

When she transformed into a wolf, it gave him such a strong fright that he felt something welling up inside him explode. Now here he was, running, lost in the middle of the forest. The sandy colored wolf huff and turned around, intending to go back home until he remembered the look of horror on his parents' faces. 'What if they don't want me anymore?'

The wolf let out a low pitiful whine. Then his right ear twitched as he heard something scurry in the bushes. The voices that were screaming in his head disappeared into buzzing background noise. Something inside him told him to be alert and that he was in danger. Slowly turning around to the left he narrowed his eyes at the bushes. 'It's just a squirrel,' he thought, trying to reassure himself.

Something moved behind him this time and he quickly turned around. 'Whoever it is, this is no longer funny.'

Brown eyes widened when a pale gray creature crawled out from the bushes. Its face jolted up and it's black beady eyes locked onto his.

'Run!' an older deep voice growled inside his mind. It was a voice he didn't recognize but it sounded old. Ancient, just like Quil Sr. when he was performing a ceremony.

Without thinking about it, the sandy wolf took off running. 'Not a squirrel. Definitely not a squirrel.'

The sandy wolf jumped over a log and picked up his pace when he heard the creature scurrying behind him. The log had broke into pieces. He kept running until another creature with a single horn appeared in front of him. Rolling to the right, he crashed into a bush. Picking himself back up, the sandy wolf dodged a long forked tongue aimed his way from a third creature with a single black eye. As he was running, something inside him was building up. He wasn't sure what it was. Hearing wings flapping, he saw a shadow pass overhead. Skidding to a stop, he tuned left just as something crashed into the ground where he previously was. The pressure inside his chest increased then build up in his throat. Not a moment longer, a loud howl could be heard across the forest just as something large ram into him.

The wolf looked up to see his own pair of brown eyes being reflected from a pair of all black beady eyes. The air around him started to suffocate him. He could only let out a soft whimper as he felt a pain coursing through his body. It was different from the pain he had experienced in the living room. This one felt like something was being ripped away from him agonizingly slow.

He took in a desperate gasp as he found that he could suddenly breath again. A very large golden brown wolf had ripped the creature off of him. He watched with a blurry haze as the golden wolf chomped on the creature's head and ate it. While it continued eating the corpse, four more golden brown wolves jumped out from the tree line. One was carrying a young woman with short fizzy hair and a burgundy bandana. The woman jumped off of the golden wolf she was on as she ran to his side.

"Pup," she said gently. "I need you to look at me."

The sandy colored wolf barely heard her as he tried to focus on her voice. 'I can't. Too tired.'

As he tried to keep his eyes opened, he could hear so many voices clearly in his mind now. Before, they were all muffled in the background.

'Seth!' They all said. One voice stuck out from all the others.

'Leah?' Even within his own mind, his own voice sounded weak.

His body was beginning to feel cold until warm hands were placed on both sides of his cheeks. "Pup," the woman said gently, "you must not fall asleep. Not here."

He felt warm breath wash over his head as his vision was covered by golden fur. A few seconds later, he felt himself being gently picked up then the breeze grazing against his own fur.

--

As they ran into the forest, Sam realized that they were one member short in the mind scape. He asked, 'Where's Jacob?'

'Who cares where baby alpha is, Sam.' Paul growled in the mind scape as he made a beeline towards Seth's general direction. Somehow his wolf knew where Seth was and Paul always trusted his wolf. 'A pack member is hurt. We all heard the howl. If he cared, he would be here with us.'

Quil and Embry stayed silent at what Paul said about their childhood friend. Seth could've died if that golden brown wolf hadn't intervened. They felt his fear and his pain through the pack mind. Those creatures, whatever they were, were different than vampires.

Hearing Seth groan in their mindset, everyone focused on locating him.

--

'Seth! Where are you, dammit?' he heard his sister call out, frantic.

Feeling exhausted with each passing seconds, his lids lowered until the soft voice murmured, "Not yet, pup. Keep your eyes open for me."

Seth forced himself to keep his lids open. He saw a golden wall with streaks of whites, soft greens, and light orange swirling through it. He felt himself being gently placed on the ground as the scent of grass entered his nose. There was a soft glow then the woman entered his line of sight. Dark brown eyes peered into his as she softly said, "If you can hear me, he's at the border closest to Forks and No Man's Land."

'Quil, you're closer.' A familiar voice said in Seth's mind. He heard someone answer but he couldn't make out what was said.

'Sam?' Seth asked, uncertainly.

'Hey Seth,' Sam replied.

'Where's Leah? Leah okay?'

'Of course I'm okay, you goof.'

Hearing his sister's voice, he felt relief flood him. 'Good.'

Everything went dark as the pack mind connection with Seth went silent.

'Seth?' Leah asked as she felt dread fill her stomach. 'Come on, don't scare me like this. Seth?!'

--

Maya gently glided her fingers into the pup's fur and said, "I'm sorry you had to go through this."

Hearing a rustle, Maya looked up to see a chocolate brown wolf. In the scarce sunlight of the forest, she could see that the fur around his face was a lighter shade than his body. When their eyes met, something inside her hummed. The wolf froze mid step and looked at her in disbelief. Slowly rising to stand, she gave a single nod before a golden brown wolf appeared behind her.

Seeing the golden wolf, the chocolate brown wolf sprung into action but was too late as they both disappeared back behind a golden wall. He let out a low whine when the wall too disappeared. Wanting to go after her but knowing that Seth needed him, he walked towards Seth and nudged the younger wolve's muzzle.

Quil's eyes widened when Seth began to phase back into a human. Something was wrong. Seth was shivering. Putting his nose to Seth's body, it was cold. Too cold compared to his own. 'Sam we have a problem.'

'What do you mean?!' Leah cried out terrified.

Everyone winced at the loud pitch in their mind. 'Seth isn't maintaining his body heat like how we normally would.' Quil then gently placed his own body next to Seth to keep him warm. 'He needs winter clothes.'

Sam said, 'Jared, see if you can get clothes from Sue.'

As Jared left, Embry ran to meet up with Paul. Both were making their way towards Quil and Seth. Feeling Paul's questioning stare, Embry said, 'If Seth's temperature is dropping then that means he has to ride on one of us to keep warm.'

Paul gave him a contemplative look. 'I'm not playing horse.'

Embry let out a chuckle as the two arrived to Quil's location. They saw him breathing warm breaths over Seth's face. Quil turned towards them. 'It's helping a little bit.'

Paul and Embry frowned. Paul watched as Embry went to the other side of Seth, keeping the kid's back warm. Huffing, Paul shifted back into his human form. Slipping on a short, he went in between Quil and Embry to gently pick up Seth. Sitting back down, he sat in between the two wolves as they adjusted themselves to keep the kid warm and off the cold forest floor.

'Where do you think she went?' Embry asked. He had felt a shift in the pack mind when Quil had looked at the same woman from the grocery store.

'I don't know,' Quil answered.

'No where good, I could tell you that.' Paul growled between his teeth. Behind those walls he could only assume were more of where the creatures were.

Quil and Embry froze as they looked at Paul in shock. 'You can hear us?'

'What do you mean, dimwit? Of course I can hear you. We share a pack-.' Paul froze. It was only now that he realized that he can hear Quil and Embry in his human form.

'This is bizarre,' Quil said. He can still hear the bickering between Leah and Sam, however they seemed more like background noise. 'Can you hear the others, Paul?' he asked.

Paul shook his head. 'Just you two.'

'Do you think it's because of her?' Embry asked.

Paul froze in thought. 'Maybe.'

'Should we tell Sam?' Embry asked.

'And have him order us away from her like how he did everyone else?' Paul grumbled out. He understood why Sam had done what he's done. However, part of him felt that Sam was fearful of his wolf. When the phasing accident had happened with Emily, that fear was further cemented.

All three bristled at the thought of being alpha ordered away from her. Embry tentatively asked, 'Is this what imprinting is?'

Paul contemplated before saying anything. While he hated to admit it, something inside him new that Embry and Quil would understand what he was going to say. Despite Jared being his best friend, out of everyone in the pack, those two were the most similar to him. Quil and Embry were closer to their wolf counterpart than the others. To the point where they had become one person. One being. Not only that, Jared and Sam had imprinted so they wouldn't understand this thing the three had between the mysterious woman. This was something else entirely.

Paul shook his head. 'My wolf says no.'

'Sister?' Embry suggested, trying to label what she is to them. All three growled at once. 'Ok, not sister.' He paused then hesitantly asked, 'Mate?'

As that word entered the trios mind, their wolves hummed in unison, making low vibrations inside their chests. The three pack brothers looked at one another, perplexed.

'At least our wolves are in agreement.' Quil laughed, albeit awkwardly. 'The question is, are we willing to share?'

Quil and Embry looked at one another. They were used to sharing since they were in diapers. Sharing a mate made sense. They both turned to look at Paul, who had a scowl on his face.

When Paul had first found out about imprinting, he knew it wouldn't happen to him. When Jared imprinted, despite it being so called 'rare', he thought he might possibly find the one person for him. Now, he learned that not only was he not getting an imprint, but that he would have to share his mate with Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Doo.

'I can ask my grandfather to see if anything like this has happened before since we don't want to tell Sam yet.' Quil quickly suggested.

'Yeah,' Embry piped in. 'We can ask and wait for her to return.' Embry winced at reminding them of who knows where she went.

Quil asked, 'What if she doesn't return?' All three let out soft whines.

A few moments later, they heard the bushes shuffle.

'That's Jared,' Embry told Paul, seeing him tense. With good reason too. The shuffling of bushes was the only warning Seth had before one of the creatures popped up.

Paul forced himself to relax as a familiar brown furred wolf with dark grey fur around the eyes appeared. In his mouth was a bag of clothes. Shifting into human form, Jared and Paul began to dress Seth.

"His temperature is like a normal human's," Jared commented as an oversized winter coat zipped up.

Ignoring Jared's comment, Paul said, "Jared, get on top of Embry."

Jared's eyes widened at Paul. "What the-?"

Paul let out a soft growl at Jared, making him quickly keep his retort to himself. "Seth keeps losing heat. To keep him warm, he needs to ride on one of us. And you have to ride with him so that he doesn't fall off."

Jared's face turned serious and nodded. Embry lowered himself as Jared got on top of him. Embry let out a low growl when Jared's knee jabbed into his ribs. "My bad bro. This is a first for me," Jared said as he turned to look at Paul.

Embry rolled his eyes as he let out a huff. Paul got up with Seth and handed him to Jared. Once Seth was secured, Paul looked at his pack mates. Everyone straightened at the look. Out of everyone in the pack, Paul was the best one when it came to strategizing any offense or defense.

"Quil will cover the front and I'll cover the back. We are going straight to the Clearwater's. Sue's a nurse, so she'll know how to proceed better than Emily right now."

They all nodded in unison. As soon as Paul phased into a wolf, all three wolves took off. Above them, large silver eyes watched in hope.

When they arrived to a small house painted light lavender, Paul and Quil phased into their human forms. Quickly putting on their shorts, Paul grabbed Seth while Quil ran inside the house to notify Sue and Harry. Both of them came out of the house in a rush as they saw Paul carry Seth inside.

"Where's Leah?" Harry asked, worried.

Jared looked at him and grimaced. "Somewhere in Canada. Sam's with her."

Harry nodded grimly as he let the boys into his home. His wife was barking orders to Quil, Embry, and Paul. Sue turned to look at Harry. "His temperature keeps dropping."

Harry's eyes widened. "I can start up the fire. Why don't you draw him a hot bath."

Sue nodded as she ushered the boys to bring Seth to the bathroom. Jared stayed behind to help Harry with the wood. Harry stoked the fire and asked, "What happened to my son, Jared?"

Jared winced at the hard tone. He wished Sam was here to explain it. Even he didn't understand what had happened.

"Something attacked him," Paul voice said from behind them. They turned around to see him propped to one side of the door frame leading to the kitchen.

"Attacked?" Harry asked, horrified.

Paul nodded, ignoring Jared's warning gaze. These were Seth's parents. They had a right to know. Plus they both are part of the Council. "Not by a vampire. By another creature."

"What kind of creature?" Harry asked.

Paul shook his head, unsure.

"What happened to the creature?" he asked.

Paul answered, "Seth saw it get eatened."

"By what?" Harry wondered in surprised.

Paul looked out the living room side window and frowned. "A large golden wolf."

Jared looked at Paul. For moment there, it seemed like Paul was scared. 'Are you sure you didn't imprint?' Jared thought to himself.

The hours went by as the pack rotated around to keep Seth warm while waiting for Leah and Sam to arrive. All the while, Paul, Embry, and Quil would feel small twinges of pain throughout their body. Each time one flared, they looked at one another in worry.

--

In a clearing, Maya huffed as she collapsed onto the ground, exhausted. Her body had cuts and bruises all over.

"They were just the underlings," she muttered. Cursing at herself, she let the darkness take her. Her last thought was of Will and John.

A few quiet moments went by when all the lights to the house turned on at the same time. The door opened slightly as quiet chirps were heard. Three blobs looked between the cracks. The larger blobs, one black and the other white, were having a debate amongst themselves. The smallest pink one bounded out towards the fallen woman. The others gasped in shock and quickly followed, being sure to keep an eye out. Seeing no danger, they huddled over her body alongside the pink one. They all looked at one another, nodded and lifted the woman up. They then shuffled back towards the house. The doors closed but the lights remained on.

--

Nestled between thick roots blanketed by soft moss was a large black wolf with white spots. His head was resting beside a sleeping golden brown pup with russet brown spots. The ears of the black wolf twitched as it raised his head in alarm. In front of him were three solid golden brown wolves that towered above him.

He had seen the black sedan parked in the main road earlier when they went to go look for Maya. When he saw that Maya had dated her note, he cursed. Usually it meant that she would be gone for days at a time. Eyes narrowing at them, he asked, 'Where is she?'

The middle golden wolf laid down and looked out towards the sky, ignoring his question. The other two chose to laid their heads down on top of their pays.

The black wolf let out a growl, only stopping when the pup stirred underneath his paws.

Once the pup settled, the golden brown wolf in the middle turn to gaze at them before laying their head out in front of them. It closed its eyes signaling to the smaller black wolf to sleep.

The black wolf grumbled as he nodded off alongside the pup.
