The kingdom of Arendelle was abuzz with activity. March had reached them, and they were busy with preparing for the spring festival.
Elsa Queen of Arendelle looked out from a balcony, her eyes fixated on the horizon unaware of the room filled with people behind her.
Anna was walking around the hallways when she came across the meeting lounge. She knocked on the door and Kei opened it.
He stepped aside to let her in. "Princess Anna, is everything all right?"
Anna walked forward and looked at all the people, they were Arendelle's aristocrats and some dignitaries from other countries. Anna folded her hands in front of herself and tried to stand tall, giving the illusion that she belonged. "Nothing is wrong, I just came to see if I could help with anything?"
Kei gave her a nod before moving around her. "I will ask your sister." He walked toward the balcony where Elsa stood. "Your Majesty?"
Elsa jolted surprised, and the balcony froze where her hands had been resting, trapping her. She was flustered and asked Kei to give her one moment. Elsa yanked her hands free and composed herself, turning to Kei who informed her that everyone was ready and that her sister was also here.
Elsa turned to Anna and quickly walked over to her. "Anna, is everything all right?"
Anna made a face at her sister's words. Why did everyone assume that the only reason she would be here in a meeting was because something horrible had happened. "I could ask you the same thing, you seem distracted."
Elsa smiled as she held Anna's hands. "I am fine, why are you here then?"
Anna did not completely believe her sister's words but decided to let it go for now. "I came to offer my assistance." Anna looked expectantly into Elsa's eyes. "Is there anything I can help with?"
"No." Elsa said, a little to enthusiastically for Anna. "I have everything under control, how about you go and see if the village is getting everything done for the festival tonight?"
Anna did her best to hide her disappointment. "Alright, good luck Elsa." She gave a small wave and left the room.
Elsa waved back at her, and she watched her go until the door closed behind Anna.
"Ah-ah-ah-ah"
Elsa's eyes got wide as she spun around to look outside once again.
"Queen Elsa?" Kei called to her.
Elsa looked worriedly out the balcony, seeing only the north mountains. "Did you hear that?" she whispered to Kei.
"Hear what your Majesty?"
Elsa, realizing that only she had heard the mysterious voice, quickly tried to brush it off. "It's nothing." She did her best to compose herself. "I am ready."
"I must warn you, Sir Anthony has been complaining that the ice on the palace roofs is probably the reason why we don't get many visitors, even though it is entirely unfounded." Kei informed her.
Elsa looked at him and could not help her grimace.
"Are you sure you do not need any help?"
Anna had walked into town and had been trying to see if she could assist anywhere.
The baker shook his head. "No, your majesty, I have everything in order."
"Bread rolls all cooked?"
"Yes."
"Cookies?"
"All done."
Anna was fidgeting now. "Well, what about the pies? Do you need more fruit for them or anything?"
"Do not worry, the pies are all baked, and I had plenty of ingredient's thanks to Queen Elsa, she had personally come yesterday and went around town to make sure everyone could be provided with everything for this special occasion. I have some fruit left over thanks to her, here princess." The baker tossed Anna an apple.
Anna almost tumbled over catching it and when she looked up the baker had left.
Anna sighed defeatedly and started to walk away.
"Hey! Anna!"
Anna jumped in surprise and almost dropped the apple again just barely managing to re grab it. She spun around.
"Olaf! You surprised me."
Olaf walked towards a barrel. "I have been told I am an expert at that." He climbed up and sat down. "What are you doing? Or is it normal for a princess to harass her subjects into letting her help them?"
Anna made a face at that. She started to sway back and forth. "I was not harassing them. I was just trying to see if I could be useful." Realizing what she had said she stopped and started to stare into the distance.
Olaf looked at her worried. "Anna? Are you all, right?"
Anna quickly snapped out of her trance. "N-no I am fine, really!"
"Oh, okay." Olaf said happily.
"I mean, I am just trying to be more useful, what with Elsa being Queen and Kristoff having his own ice harvesting business, I think I should do something too, like maybe I could hold meetings or plan events or…"
"Or teach people on how to find lost sisters." Olaf cut in.
"Exactly! Wait what?" Anna stopped her rambling to glare at Olaf. "Olaf I am serious."
"Are you okay Anna?"
"Yes! I am fine!" Anna whirled around in frustration to face the person who had asked her the question that everyone seemed to be asking her this day. Seeing Kristoff, she immediately became flustered. "Kristoff! I um, I am fine. How are you?"
Kristoff held his hands up and even had stepped away from her when she snapped at him. "I could be better." He said cautiously. "What are you doing?"
"She is doing fine, if that is what you are asking." Olaf commented.
Both Anna and Kristoff gave Olaf a look. He just stared back innocently at them. "What?"
Anna smiled and seemed to relax. She could just not stay mad at Olaf. "I was just seeing if everything was going smoothly for the festival, and you know, helping here and there."
Kristoff nodded and leaned on Sven. "It does seem to be a big event. By the way do I have to wear that outfit and say a speech tonight?"
Anna smiled somewhat smugly at him. "You've been avoiding Kei and his etiquette classes, haven't you?"
Kristoff folded his arms in defense. "This winter was terrible. I no longer had the excuse of my ice business to avoid that man, but now spring is here, and supply and demand is a thing again for me."
"It's not that bad, is it?" Anna inquired.
"Listen Anna, you grew up with all of these customs and rules and table etiquettes. But even after a year of us being together I still don't know what a salad fork is."
Anna bit her lip in sympathy.
Kristoff looked up into the sky. "Honestly, I am so looking forward to the nice cold air of the North Mountain, the serene view and the cutting of ice."
"Will you also see Marshmallow and Hansel and William and..."
"Yes." Kristoff quickly cut Olaf off before he listed all the snowgies names. "I will be going in that general direction and Elsa has asked me to check on them every so often." Kristoff paused and got an idea. "Hey, maybe you should come with me."
Olaf's eyes got big with excitement. "Really!?"
"Yeah buddy, you Kristoff and me! It will be like a guy's night out." Sven said. Olaf jumped up and down and hugged Sven's head.
Anna giggled, she loved it when Kristoff gave Sven a voice. But what was more hilarious was the fact that Olaf never realized that it was Kristoff speaking.
"Alright boys, I am happy for the little adventure you are taking soon, but right now we have to focus on today." Anna said as she interrupted them making plans for their trip.
At hearing what she said they all gave an exasperated sigh. Kristoff especially gave a disappointed look.
Anna quickly tried to get things looking brighter. "Okay Kristoff, you don't need to wear that stuffy outfit that Gerda no doubt picked out for you."
Kristoff perked up at this but quickly became skeptical. "He won't hound me for not wearing it will he?"
Anna shook her head. "You can just use me as an excuse, because if you hadn't noticed…" She walked up to him and started to adjust his jacket and then took hold of his hands. "We just so happen to be matching."
Kristoff looked down at himself and then at Anna. He wore dark brown pants with a lighter brown vest and cream-colored shirt with purple trimming and a purple sash tide around his waist. It all matched perfectly with Anna's cream-colored dress with purple and brown designs on it.
Kristoff started to smile as he nervously but his hand through his hair. "We-we do match don't we." He gave a small chuckle. "Did you plan for this?"
Anna shook her head. "I was trying to match with Elsa, we are a complete accident. Not that this should be considered as an accident!" Anna quickly started to get flustered.
"No, no!" Kristoff quickly tried to calm her down. "This is great, this is, amazing." Kristoff's voice had gone quiet as he spoke and now, he was just staring lovingly into her eyes as he held her hands.
Olaf gave a dreamy sigh. "The power of love."
Anna and Kristoff quickly let go of each other in embarrassment. Kristoff cleared his throat. "So, do you have any idea of what I should do for my speech?"
"Well, Elsa is making the first speech, which is the biggest one and is for the entire town to start the celebration. You are supposed to do yours sometime during the festival, and I was going to do a little one for the children. How about you and I switch?" Anna suggested and then started to get excited about it. "I will do yours and you can handle the children, in fact you could actually sing them a song with your lute instead of a speech!"
Kristoff thought about it before nodding his head. "I could work with that."
"Yay!" Anna cheered.
Kristoff gave her a warm smile. "Thanks Anna."
"Glad to help." Anna said before she spun around and started to walk away. "Well, I guess I will go see if all of the decorations are up!"
"Hey!" Kristoff called out to her. "I am getting some ice blocks from storage to hand out, would you like to tag alone and help?"
Anna smiled brightly at that. "I would love to!"
Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven went around town and did what they could to help the people prepare until it was time. Elsa gave her speech, Spring had finally come, the snow had disappeared but there was still a chill in the air, with it came new life and a new future for all.
After all that work and partying, Anna was happy when she and her family finally crashed down on a couch and started a little game of charades.
"Unforgivable monster!?"
"The greatest mistake of your life!?"
"He didn't even kiss you!"
The time ran up and Anna gave a laugh. "Villain."
Everyone all exclaimed in understanding as Olaf got up from the couch and Anna sat in his place.
"All right, lightning round. Boys against girls." Olaf said after he read a piece of paper that told him what he had to portray. "Go!"
Olaf started to rearrange his body to represent different things and Kristoff was instantly getting it.
"Castle, Oaken, mouse, tea pot, Oh! Elsa!"
Sven rang the bell to signal time was up. Anna glared at Kristoff. "I don't think Olaf should get to rearrange."
Kristoff gave her a grin. "It's your own fault for teaching him how to read, he's gotten so good at this game since you did."
Anna was going to argue back about how that had nothing to do with it, but Elsa cut her off. "Don't worry, this will be a cinch."
Elsa read her piece of paper and got a big smirk on her face. "I am ready."
Sven flipped the hourglass.
Elsa started to make over dramatic poses.
Anna watched her intently she was nervous because unlike everyone else she was not good at this game, but that would not stop her. "Um, snow? Oh Ice! That's got to be you eating ice cream!"
Her and Elsa seemed to be doing great, two more and they would be tied with Kristoff and Olaf. Elsa went to the next word.
Anna made a few suggestions but none of them seemed to be correct.
Elsa could see that her sister was struggling and tried another hand movement to help her. Kristoff and Olaf exclaimed on how they got it which caused Elsa to giggle a little and for Anna to look frustrated.
"Ah-ah-ah-ah."
Elsa turned around.
"Ah-ah-ah-ahh, ah-ah."
It was the voice, the voice she had kept on hearing. Why? what did it mean? Anna was making suggestions in the background, but Elsa could not hear her. It was not until Sven ran the bell and Anna touched her arm that she snapped out of it.
"You okay Elsa?" Anna asked.
"Yeah." Elsa said distractedly as she started to leave the room. "Just tired. I think I will call it a night."
Kristoff got up. "Sounds good." He gave Anna a small kiss on the cheek." Good night."
"Can you and Sven tell me a bedtime story?" Olaf asked Kristoff who replied with a "Sure buddy".
Anna made a small wave and awkward smile to everyone and then they were all gone.
Anna stood there alone for a split second before diving on the ground and searched for the piece of paper that Elsa had used.
"Ah ha!" Anna exclaimed as she held up the paper. She quickly looked at what it said. "Snow, ice, ice cream…" She listed off. "Glacier! That's what it was!" As soon as she read the words Anna felt like an idiot for not getting it. Worry seized her heart when she thought back to how Elsa looked when she had left. What if Elsa had been hurt because of Anna's frustration.
Anna looked down at the piece of paper in her hands upset, then an idea crossed her mind, and she quickly left the room.
Meanwhile Elsa was pacing around her room.
"Come on Elsa, you have to ignore it." She said to herself. "Just because you can shoot ice out of your hands does not mean that you should be hearing voices." Elsa stopped and looked out her window. Seeing the fjord, she was reminded of old tails of people hearing voices that would lead them to their deaths, especially by drowning. "I don't even know if your friend or foe."
A knock came at her door and Elsa turned around surprised. "Y-yes? Come in?"
The door opened and Anna walked through with one hand hidden behind her back. "Hey Elsa, I needed to see you."
"Oh!" Elsa's eyes got wide. She took a moment before she moved, reaching her hands out to her sister, but Anna stepped away from her. "Anna…" Elsa started to say, worry in her voice, but she was cut off.
"I wanted to apologize for how I was acting during our game."
"What?" Elsa was visibly confused.
Anna shifted. "I was getting frustrated, and I know it was making the game anything but fun, so I thought that might be why you left." Anna looked very sorry, and it made Elsa feel bad for laughing at her earlier.
"No Anna." Elsa quickly tried to comfort her. "I am just feeling a little off today, charades were really fun!"
Anna gave a sigh of relief. "I am glad. I mean, I am glad I didn't upset you, not because you are not feeling well, I am not glad for that and…"
Elsa giggled.
Anna stopped her ramblings and gave her sister a smile. "I brought you something."
Elsa stepped forward curiously. "What is it?"
Anna pulled her arm from her back and flourished a purple shawl. "Ta da!"
Elsa reached out and touched the wrap. "Is it?"
"Mother's shawl." Anna nodded her head. "I was looking around in the attic and came across one off Mother and Father's old trunks. Sorry I didn't show you earlier." Anna lifted it up and draped it across her sister's shoulders. "Fit for a queen."
Elsa clutched the shawl. "Thank you, Anna." Her sister gave her a warm and tender smile. Elsa looked down at the wrap and traced the designs with her finger. "I wish mother had told us where she had come from. Maybe then I would have known more about my powers."
"But she did tell us." Anna put her hand on her sister's shoulder, forcing Elsa to look up at her. "The Enchanted Forest and the Northuldra people."
Elsa became upset at hearing that, and she moved away from Anna and went back to the window. "That was just a story Anna."
Anna stepped forward concerned for her sister. "But…"
"I looked through Arendelle's library and asked many people about the Enchanted Forest and nothing came of it. There are no records or any knowledge of such a place. It was just a bedtime story that Father made up to get us to sleep." Elsa could not hide the anger that leaked from her voice. She stood there silently when she felt Anna throw her arms around her.
"I know, I asked about it too with no answers."
Elsa turned her head to try and look at Anna. "Then why do you believe in it."
Anna let her go so they could face each other. "When you start dating a guy who was raised by trolls, you will come to find that magic can work in mysterious ways. Or so Grand Pabbie has told Kristoff who has told me."
Elsa could not help but smile at that, but her smile faded as she was reminded of the voice. "How can we ever know if any type of enchantment is a good or bad thing?"
"Well…" Anna thought about it. "I don't think we can every really know if anything in life is good or bad unless we get to know it first."
That struck Elsa and she looked up almost hopeful. "You really think so?"
Anna gave her a nod. "What's this about anyway?"
Elsa almost told her everything, about the voice and her uncertainty of if she was doing a good job as queen. "It's… It's nothing, I just don't know how I can be truly accepted by other with my powers."
"Elsa." Anna said in a tender voice. "The only person you need to accept you, is you. No one else can genuinely do that."
Elsa nodded her head. "Well, I think it is time you went to bed." She said as she started to herd her sister out of her room.
"Wait what? How did this happen." Anna asked confused.
"I have a long day of queenly duties tomorrow and I don't think reminiscing about the past is going to help me. So, I am sorry dear sister, but I must ask you to leave." Elsa could not hide her mischievous grin as she shoved Anna lightly out her room. "Good night!"
And with that Elsa shut her door. She leaned on the door and sighed. Her smile gone. She didn't know what to do but Anna's words resonated with her. Elsa turned around and once again went back to the window.
"You can never know unless you understand it first."
Outside of Elsa's room Anna stood there shocked. She raised her hand to knock but hesitated before lowering her arm. She didn't want to push anything.
Anna walked away, heading back to her own room, when she passed by a window that looked over their castle entrance.
Anna stared at the gates. They had become a symbol for the sisters to not shut each other again. A smile crept onto her face, but it quickly faltered before disappearing. She wanted to talk to her sister, to ask questions, to talk about the past, to truly open up to one another. But thirteen years is a long time, and even though the two of them now spent a lot of time together there are still things that are not said. Elsa does not talk about her solitude and Anna doesn't talk about her own problems.
Anna straightened up and a huge grin appeared on her face. She would not let things get her down. She had her sister, a great boyfriend, and Olaf and Sven too. Even if there is still a gap between Elsa and her, they were slowly closing it.
And with that Anna continued to her room.
Another long chapter.
This one was especially hard because I had to constantly switch between people's perspective. I chose to write the story in third person perspective because I am trying to stay in tune with the movie, so I can easily jump from person to person. but I personally like fallowing one person. Last chapter was supposed to be more like this one, but I ended up just fallowing Agnarr.
This chapter was supposed to set up the characters. What are they like now? And what is their goals? Anna is very mature in the movie, I thought that was fine and showed her growth, but the rest of the cast were idiots, and that made her out to be a nag. So, I brought back Anna's bubble personality. I thought I did well with Olaf and Kristoff, and then there is Elsa. Elsa is hard because the movies paint her as being practically perfect, she always looks flawless. I loved Frozen Fever for showing Elsa acting like an idiot. The directors said that we would see more of that fun side of Elsa in Frozen 2, but all we got was a few funny facial expressions. And above everything else, she didn't feel very mature. She was constantly forgetting about everyone else and just kept staring around with a look of amazement on her face. She felt more focused on finding the voice because she wants to, and not because it will save Arendelle. So, I tried to bring back her maturity but gave her a mischievous side as well as made her a bit of a drama queen during the charade's scene.
I am predicting that people are going to tell me that it has actually been three years since the events of frozen, and that it is supposed to be fall.
There is a reason that I turned it into one year, but that might be connected to spoilers. (We will never know now because I wrote this a long time ago and forgot the reason. I think I just thought it was pointless to have a three-year gap)
As for changing the season, I personally did not understand why it was fall. The trailer made a big deal out of it, making us think we were going to a forest that was perpetually in this season, and in the movie, Anna's clothing has a lot of wheat symbols. But no, it is just fall. I think it is supposed to represent change.
