Chapter 3
A couple hours passed before the Viking boy woke up. When his eyes opened I saw that they were a beautiful forest green. He looked at me and we locked eyes. I smiled a bit and he started to blush.
"H-hi." He said as he slowly sat up.
"Hello." I said softly while tucking a lock of my hair behind my ear. "How are you feeling? I saw you falling from the top of the cove."
The boy held his head as he answered. "Alright I guess. I-I um..I p-passed out from seeing you..y-ya know..become human..h-how are you able to do that anyway?"
"Turn human? I have been able to do it since I hatched. I am not sure if all Night Furies can do it. I..was alone for as long as I can remember." I replied, looking down sadly.
"I'm so sorry to hear that.." The boy said.
I shrugged and messed with my hair. The boy cleared his throat.
"M-my name's Hiccup. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third."
I looked up with a smile. "My name is Kala."
Hiccup smiled with a light blush tinting his cheeks. "That's a beautiful name. So, you said Night Furies earlier. Does that mean that we were right about what your species is called?"
I nodded. "Yes. Humans get the species names correct every time."
"That's a relief. Would be awful if we were completely off about you guys. Um..do you know why you guys raid our village?"
I thought hard about his question and shook my head. "I don't remember."
"You don't remember?"
I shook my head again. "I'm sorry Hiccup. I..don't even know where we are right now."
Hiccup's eyes widened and then he got a sympathetic look on his face. "I'm so sorry Kala..maybe if I never shot you down you would still have your memories.." He looked away from me sadly. I pulled him into a hug.
"Even if you did shoot me down from the sky, I do not think my memory loss is your fault Hiccup."
He smiled a bit and hugged me back. "Thanks Kala."
We pulled away and smiled at one another.
"Do you think you could tell me about how you found me?"
"Oh! Sure. Yesterday morning you and a ton of other dragons raided my village. During the commotion I was able to sneak out of the forge that I work in and set up my bola launcher. I waited for you to show up and when you destroyed one of the catapults my village uses during raids, I shot you down with it." He looks away rubbing his neck. "Um..after some stuff went down with my dad and the rest of the village, I came out into the forest to look for you..and when I found you I was..g-gonna kill you..a-and take your heart to my dad..but..when I looked into your eyes..I couldn't bring myself to do it.." He looked back at me, blushing a bit. "S-so I let you go."
I giggled a bit. "Weren't you scared that I would kill you?"
"Oh I was terrified. Before I could cut the rest of the bola for you, you got out and pinned me against a boulder. I was sure I was done for, but you proved me wrong. You just roared at me and flew off, wobbly, but that was because…" Hiccup went silent looking down. I got worried a bit and tilted my head.
"Because of what Hiccup?"
Hiccup sighed and looked up at me with tears in his eyes.
"Because the bola I shot you down with took off your left tail fin.."
My eyes widened and teared up. I quickly turned into my dragon form and looked at my tail. Sure enough, my left tail fin was gone and the wound was halfway healed. Luckily it wasn't bleeding.
"I'm so so sorry Kala...If I had known I would have done this to you...I would have never shot you down in the first place…"
I looked at Hiccup and crooned nuzzling him as a way to say 'I don't blame you for this.' He smiled sniffling.
"Thanks..I-I'm glad you don't hate me for taking away your flight.."
I turned human and smiled a bit as I wiped my eyes.
"It's not that bad. I can easily get out of this cove as a human and leave this island by boat. That is if your village will allow me to use one of your boats."
Hiccup's eyes widened at that.
"Wait. You want to leave?"
"Well..Vikings do not really like dragons from what I can remember before my memory goes dark..so there is no reason for me to stay here..right?"
He shook his head and had a determined look on his face.
"You can stay here and learn more about the Viking way from me. I could even help you be able to fly again."
I perked up and looked at him excitedly.
"Really? You would do that for me? But how? I no longer have my left tail fin. A Night Fury needs both tail fins to even get airborne without crashing."
Hiccup smirked a bit.
"I work in the forge, remember? I invent things all the time. I could build you a prosthetic tail fin. I would just need to get measurements of your right tail fin, that way the prosthetic is the right size."
I smiled and nodded rapidly.
"That sounds wonderful Hiccup. Thank you."
"Of course. It's my fault you're downed anyway. I need to fix my mistake."
I hugged him tightly, starting to purr happily. He hugged me back and I could tell without even looking that he was smiling and blushing as well.
As we separated, Hiccup looked at the sky and sighed.
"I should head back to the village. It's getting late and I probably have Dragon Training again in the morning."
"Dragon Training?" I asked while tilting my head.
Hiccup sighed. "Yeah..my village teaches the teens of each generation how to kill dragons..but I don't want to be a part of any of it..not after meeting you.."
I placed a hand on his shoulder sympathetically.
"Well, why not make the best of it? I could teach you ways to tame the dragons. That way you can still be part of the training, but not have to harm the dragons that you go up against."
Hiccup looked at me a bit shocked.
"You would do that?"
I smiled and nodded.
"It's only fair. You teach me about being a Viking and I teach you about befriending dragons. I see that as a win-win. Plus, it'll be my way of paying you back for the prosthetic."
Hiccup smiled and nodded.
"Yeah that seems fair. Speaking of, how is it that you are hurt as a dragon, but not as a human?"
"Oh, that's because my tail recedes into my body where the tailbone is located on the human body. But if my tail ever gets harmed on a certain side that leaves a scar, the scar shows up on the specific leg that is on that side of my body. See?"
I showed him my left leg and there was a large scar on the outer side of it from the loss of my tail fin. He looked at it closely and ghosted his fingers across it.
"That's interesting. Then again this whole thing is interesting. I never considered the possibility of dragons being able to become humans. Who's to say there aren't any living among us in my own village."
"I'm sure there is none. Since your village is Vikings that kill dragons, I do not think any of them would want to risk their life by being a resident."
Hiccup chuckled and nodded in agreement.
"I suppose you're right. They probably wouldn't feel safe. Especially during a dragon raid."
I nodded.
"You should get going now. Until we meet again?"
Hiccup smiled with a small blush.
"Yeah. Until we meet again."
We both stood and hugged, then he left the cove to head back to his village.
