Mai's POV
Morning light came in through my open window and cast a golden glow across half of my room. Ugh Genes trying to kill me. I can't live like this I need proper sleep. I thought while clicking on my phone screen. I had awoken just before my alarm. Reluctantly I dragged myself out of bed and started getting ready for the flight.
-
"Holy crap Mai is that seriously all of the belongings you intend to take!" Only 6:30 in the morning and Yasu was already yelling in my ear.
"This is all the stuff I need Yasu I'm not going to bring my whole damn wardrobe and I needed space for my books." I snipped back. "What kind of a chick are you all the girls I've been with haul around all of their girly crap with them 24/7." I sighed deeply.
"Bou-san remind me why I agreed to live with this heathen." Yasu had become one of the biggest players in Shibuya and I had a feeling he wouldn't give up his late night shenanigans so easily. I could imagine the words 'New city, new conquests' escaping his lips. Yasu giggled a little bit and adjusted his glasses.
"Come on team Maisu wouldn't be the same without big bro Yasu." I wanted to facepalm. "Bou-san he's combining our names now." I shouted pointing a finger at the dark haired shit disturber.
Ayako walked into the room looking annoyed. "You two better get along without us around. All you will have is each other." I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes.
Hey come on Ayako we will have Lin, Madoka and Oliver Davis himself to look out for us." Yasu interjected with a mischievous smile pointed in my direction. "Thanks for summoning that up you ass." I complained feeling myself beginning to sweat.
"Don't worry Mai we haven't talked to Naru about you two going to Cambridge and I don't think Lin had mentioned it to anyone." Once again, I thought, that doesn't make me feel any better.
"I wonder how Naru will react when he sees little Mai all grown up." Yasu teased resting his forearm on my shoulder and putting his weight on me. "Hey get off me you perv, I'm not one of your dumb girlfriends to flirt around with." Bou-san pulled said pervert off of me and started to lecture him. "Quit it you lot of idiots, you are going to make us late for the kids flight!" Ayako yelled hitting the two boys upside the heads.
-
"Don't cry Bou-san we will be safe." I reassured a sobbing Monk while making our way through customs. "That Martin Davis better be good to you two. He said wrapping his big arms around me.
"Hey Monk she's going to die before she even gets on the plane if you keep hugging her like that." Yasu said looking at the spectacle that was the two of us. "Can't breathe." I whined from inside his strangling embrace.
"Let me have a hug before you squeeze the life out of our adopted daughter." Ayako interjected hitting Bou-san in the head once again. "Ouch, that hurts you crazy old bat!" Bou-san yelped earning himself another whack.
"You guys are the ones who should be concerned. What will you two old farts do without Mai getting between your attempts to kill eachother!" Yasu laughed dodging a smack from the redhead. Unfortunately for him he dodged straight into Bou-sans line of fire and received smack anyway.
"Ha! Not bad for an old fart like me." Monk stated proudly. He's accepted it now. I thought snickering to myself.
"I'm going to miss you guys!" I said swallowing the tears that threatened to fall. "Awe Mai we will miss you too, I expect an email from you at least once a day." Bou-Dan demanded while making sure I had the cell phone he had bought me.
"Don't worry I'll take good care of her." Yasu smiled messing up my hair. "Somehow that doesn't ease my concern much." Ayako deadpanned looking even more unimpressed than usual.
After a few more bittersweet goodbyes our flight was called and we boarded the plane. "Thank goodness we have a direct flight there." I said gratefully. "This airport stuff is confusing." Yasu put our carry ons into the overhead storage then took his seat beside me.
"This is your first flight ever isn't it." Yasu observed probably taking note of my worsening composure. "What gave it away?" I laughed holding my shaking hands together. "I simply have a gift!" He smiled and shrugged theatrically. "You've got something but I wouldn't call it a gift." I mumbled under my breath unbeknownst to my goof of a best friend.
The plane ride wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be and honestly I had slept for most of it. I awoke to the prodding of a tired looking Yasu who complained that he had been used as my pillow the whole flight.
"Ah land sweet land!" Yasu exclaimed in nearly perfect English making his way out of the airport. "Ugh Yasu if you keep acting like such a psycho your going to make a bad name for our whole country." I complained exasperated.
"Come on Mai stop being so dramatic and help me catch a cab to our new apartment." Yasu demanded still in English. I sighed knowing I would have to get out of my comfort zone too and as Gene puts it, 'When in Rome do as the Romans do'.
In a overwhelming ride of beeping and speeding through narrow London streets we somehow managed to get to our apartment. "That cab driver drove like a crazy person!" I said as he whizzed back off into the chaos that was London traffic. "Yeah London roads are something entirely different from Tokyo's highways." Yasu agreed looking a little pale.
-
After unpacking all of our belongings Yasu had decided to break in his new bed and had passed out almost instantly. On the other hand my secret talent was falling asleep anywhere so I had gotten some rest on the plane.
My eyes wandered our new home. It was rather small and a bit beat down like it had had several accommodators before us. Yasu had already named it our humble abode. I was grateful it had two bedrooms and surprisingly two bathrooms so for the most part Yasu and I only had to share a kitchen. As much as I loved Yasu he was known for getting on my nerves naturally like a sibling tends to do, so it was nice that we could have our privacy.
In 3 days we would begin our classes at Cambridge. I twiddled my thumbs nervously and pulled up an email I had received from 2 years ago that I had never answered.

To: Mai Taniyama,
Subject:Disbanding of SPR
Dear Mai, Lin and I have returned to England as you know and I wanted to formally thank you for all the adequate work you did for us over the past year. I did not wish to disband the company so abruptly and cause you any trouble. If you wish to use SPR as a reference for future employers on your resume you can reach me at the number attached.
Sincerely Oliver Davis

I reread the stupid words of the email as I had so many times before. My heart hung heavy. It was far too formal to be considered as a proper goodbye. Gene had said that was just Narus weird way of showing he cared about me but I couldn't help but feel it was far too formal and vague. We had all been through so much together.
We were a family in my eyes. I suppose even his part in that was all just the doings of his fake persona Kayzuya Shibuya. This famous Oliver Davis was nothing but a stranger to me.
Lins POV
I observed my ever somber charge from across the table. Since bringing back the glum news of Genes passing from Japan Noll had become even more closed off than before. Which wasn't even thought to be possible. We stood corrected.
Now a days he always had his nose shoved in a book. Though I knew Noll a little more than thinking all of his mourning was just for his deceased twin. Surely that was a big part of it but I knew that he missed a certain brunette assistant. Even if he couldn't even figure it out for himself.
I watched him turn the pages of his book and sip on a cup of Earl grey. He had no idea what was to come. Even I had been surprised when Monk had emailed me that Yasu and Mai had both graduated with flying colours and were accepted to Cambridge.
So surprised in fact that I had found their applications and scrutinized every detail. They both would indefinitely become assets to the SPR branch in London. Martin Davis had also personally read their submissions and was anticipating the arrival of the two exceptional Japanese students.
I had kept the fact that these two students were acquainted with his son to myself. I knew that he would put two and two together himself if he had not already.
"Lin you have been acting strangely lately." Noll broke his silence from behind his book. There really wasn't a person alive that could keep anything from that kid I thought. Or I guess young man.
"What do you mean?" I asked in a bland tone. "You've just been off." Noll deducted putting his book down and revealing quizzical blue eyes. I guess the recent lapse of my stoic composure was enough to get him interested. How intriguing. "Madoka has been on my case lately about you." I told a believable half truth and like that his interest evaporated.
"I don't care much for Madokas meddling, I have been very busy lately considering a new topic of research." I looked up from my laptop. "That's rather good news care to share some of the details?" I asked feeling my curiosity rise.
"I want to study the variations of spirits from different cultures and different countries. From my experiences in Japan the ghosts there had many small differences from the spirits here in London. I have already started to theorize that people's belief systems change the way their life energy conjures itself once their living breathing body passes." I scratched my chin. "That would be a very fascinating thing to consider." I admitted.
"I have been putting together a detailed plan for my father to review. I wish to return to Japan first as its spirits are the second most familiar to me." Noll said putting his nose back in his book.
I took that as a signal that he no longer wished to elaborate on it anymore and a little smile almost surfaced on my face. There was a very high possibility that he would hold off on those plans for a while. His motivation to study in Japan might just be coming to him.
