Lin's POV

I regretted suggesting the three young adults pile up in the back seat of the SPR van as soon as it came out of my mouth. Madoka sat in the front with me much to Nolls displeasure and Mai was stuck in between the two dark haired boys in the back.

Yasu and Madoka were talking loudly the whole ride there and Mai was uncharacteristically quiet. As for Noll I didn't have to glance in the rear view mirror to know that he was beyond irritated. I bet he wished he had just driven himself even though driving wasn't something that he took pleasure in doing.

Mai and Yasu didn't have their licenses as living in big cities with buses didn't consider it necessary. I didn't blame them the city traffic was not the ideal place for learners.

Eventually we drove out further onto the countryside and after three unbearably long hours we had nearly reached our destination.

"Are we there yet?" Mai asked for the umpteenth time since we left London. "It's just down this road Mai." I responded grateful to finally be free of the obvious backseat tension.

"Good, if I had to spend one more moment stuck next to Mai I think I might contract her stupidity." Noll hissed angrily. "Would it really kill you not to be miserable for one day." Mai growled back through clenched teeth.

"How could anyone not be frustrated after the tenth time you asked if we were there." I closed my eyes and inhaled a deep breath. This was going to be a long case.

After parking everyone vacated the van like their lives depended on it and perhaps they did the way Noll and Mai were glaring at each other. I took in the scenery of the country side feeling myself relax as Madoka brushed her hand against mine.

I managed a small smile just for her which she returned in tenfold. It was still quite early in the morning about ten am and the sun was casting a bright radiance over the green fields.

To the right of the property an old beat up red painted barn could be made out in the distance and right dab in the middle what I assumed was the farm house we had been called in for.

The house was relatively large and looked like an oversized log cabin. It really would have been a beautiful home in it's day but the weather appeared to have gotten the best of it. "Wow this place sure looks creepy." Yasu vocalized what we all undoubtedly must be thinking.

Right after he said that the dark wooden door swung open revealing a middle aged man and two boys that looked about the same age as Yasu and Naru.

"You must be the people that we called about the strange occurrences!" One of the boys yelled while running up to us dressed in muddy farm clothes.

The other boy was close behind dressed all in denim telling who I assumed was his brother to take it easy. "Hello it's nice to meet you I'm Sam and this here is my brother Lew." Sam introduced smiling and holding out his hand which was very dirty.

"Samuel get your filthy mitts away from them nobody wants a handshake from the likes of you!" The boy who was introduced as Lew exclaimed pulling his shorter blonde brother back with a large hand on his shoulder. "Bloody hell Lewy your hands are more mucky than mine look you're getting my shirt all grimy."

The middle aged man with light brunette hair tucked under a baseball stepped forward. He looked as if he hadn't slept in days with shaggy peppered stubble and dark bags underneath his eyes.

"I'm sorry about my sons they don't see much of the public since the farmhands left and we had to take on the workload all on our own." He said standing beside his two boys.

"My names Henry I'm grateful that you are all here to help us. My two boys here will show you to rooms where you can get yourselves situated and then we can talk about the strange things that drove so many away from this place. Also nothing too bad ever happens when it's light out it's when the sun sets that stuff starts to get strange. I just have some quick chores to take care of and I'll be back to answer any questions y'all might have." He said then rushed away to tend to his farm.

"Sorry if dad is a bit out of sorts it's been the hardest on him especially after our Mum had to leave." Sam said then insisted on helping us carry some of our equipment inside.

"Yeah the girls left with her too we have three sisters but the girls seemed to be the target of whatever is happening in this house." Lew mentioned after we had hauled everything we needed inside.

The seven of us were currently sitting around the kitchen table. Noll and Madoka were listening closely as the boys began to explain everything they were aware of in the house and Yasu typed away furiously on his laptop, no doubt looking into the history of the property. Mai on the other hand looked pretty pale and was kind of glazed over.

I wasn't the only one who noticed her complexion. "Mai." Noll called her name actually looking concerned. Yasu was up from his laptop in a second and was immediately by her side.

"Mai can you tell us what you're feeling you don't look so well." Yasu said putting a hand on her cheek bringing her out of her trance.

"I feel like something bad happened here I can feel so many emotions." Mai whispered then seemed to fully snap out of it.

"Don't worry Yasu I'm alright I just think I can sense an unfriendly presence." Mai smiled softly moving his hand from her ashen face. I watched the exchange feeling a little stiff.

When had they gotten so comfortable with each other? I suppose they live together they must have became close. I figured Noll had felt unsavoury at the exchange as he seemed to become even more indifferent.

"Well if you're fine please continue Sam." Noll said turning his attention back to the brothers.

"He's so hopeless." Madoka complained in a hushed tone to me. I turned back to my own computer work. Madoka was hardly ever incorrect. Noll truly is hopeless.

Mai's POV

As soon as I had stepped out onto the property I had gotten a bit woozy. I lost my spirit to continue Naru's and my nasty look contest and just focused on the heavy energy that was swirling all around.

I followed closely behind Yasu and did my best to aid in carrying the equipment inside. Nobody likes a slacker.

Then the boys began to tell us of the occurrences and why their sisters and mother had gone to stay with their extended family in the city. It ranged from feeling like someone was watching them to being pushed down stairs to waking up with strange marks carved into their skin.

I shivered with wide eyes. How terrifying. "We have pictures we can show you too." Sam added grimly his pale green eyes looking anywhere but at our faces. "Our father hasn't been able to sleep since this started happening. It was so strange we had lived in this house our whole lives and suddenly something changed." Lew said looking upset as well.

The sorrow looked out of place on the two excitable boys faces. "We think that stuff happens to him too but he won't talk about it to us." Sam said looking out of the large window at the distant figure of his father fixing a fence.

"Did anything significant happen the day that these events started to transpire?" Madoka asked furrowing her brow.

"Not that we can really think of. I'm sorry I wish we could be of more help." Sam answered still looking dreary.

"Hey you guys are doing great." I said trying to lift their moods a bit. "We are glad that nobody has been severely injured." I added looking into their eyes and giving them a soft smile. I was grateful that they seemed to relax a bit and started joking around with each other again.

"How about we give you guys a tour around the property." Lew suggested getting up from his seat and stretching. I bounced up as well. "Can we go see the horses!" I asked all pumped up.

"I can take you for a ride if you like, our horses are very well trained." Lew offered returning my bright smile. "Mai this isn't a vacation we are here to work." Naru criticized giving me an icy look.

I felt frustration build at him calling me out so harshly but I held it in. He wasn't wrong, we weren't here to have fun. "Thank you for the offer Lew." I thanked him appreciatively. He was kind to think of me.

Naru looked up from his notes and gave me a once over. I turned a little bit crimson from annoyance, or at least that's what I told myself. Why couldn't Naru ever do something kind for anyone.

I mean he wasn't always as frigid as the Arctic winds but the times he wasn't was few and far between. "Mai can you make yourself useful and get some tea." He asked while running a hand through his dark curls.

"Hey you're not my boss on this case Madoka is in charge here!" I reminded him annoyed. I was of more use than just a tea dog on cases now.

I swear every time that narcissist opens his damn mouth I feel offended!

Naru gave me his classic look that made me aware of him feeling miffed and I crossed my arms defiantly. "I will make some tea for us all but only because I would like a cup as well." I declared stomping off towards the kitchen Yasu in tow.

"You know he will never take you seriously if you always act so immature." Yasu said being frank as soon as we were alone.

I puffed out an irritated breath. "I know that you're right. There's just something about him that gets me all fired up!" I complained while sorting out the tea.

In the corner of my eye I caught Yasu's bemused expression. "You'll just have to show him how far you have come and this case is the perfect opportunity." Yasu reminded.

I grumbled a reply and shoved a tray of tea towards Yasu. "You bring this to our group I'll bring these ones for Sam and Lew."

I found the two brothers and gave them their tea. They were as thankful as ever and told me they decided to wait to give us a tour until their father returned. I sat beside them at the now vacant table.

"Your friends are just in the other room messing with their techy stuff." Sam mentioned pressing the cup to his pink lips.

I chortled a bit. Naru would be rather unimpressed if he heard his families expensive parapsychology equipment being referred to as techy stuff.

"Well I guess they don't need me over there for now." Lew leaned in a bit closer to me. "So how did you get into this business I mean you don't really look like the type." I gave him an awkward look.

"Ahh, what do you mean by that." Lew turned a bit red. "I don't mean that in an offensive way at all!" He defended. "I just mean you're so young and pretty, I just figured that um well, you might be more interested in something a bit more.. Normal?" Lew finished looking utterly flustered.

I broke out into a fit of giggles. "Don't worry I'm not out of place with the team. I'm actually a bit of a medium." I gave him a cheery grin to show I wasn't offended. I was actually a tad flattered. I mean it wasn't everyday I get told I'm pretty. I blushed a bit at that too.

"You're a medium?" Sam asked giving me a once over. "I've never even met one before or even heard of a real one." He admitted looking a bit awed.

"Well it's not that special my powers, you should see my friend back in Japan Masako Hara she even has her own tv show!" I explained bashfully.

"That's really cool can you see dead people for real!" Lew blurted out in amazement. "Ah, well I guess so sometimes." I put a finger up to my chin. Talking about my powers always made me feel a bit embarrassed.

Yasu always says I'm too humble but in honest truth I just wasn't all that talented. Not compared to what Gene was capable of anyway. My powers are so vast and unpredictable while Genes were more select but fine tuned to perfection. He was all in all a perfect medium. And I, well I am just a multifaceted jumble of chaotic power.

"Can you do a seance and communicate with the spirits that keep bothering father?" Sam asked curiosity bubbling in his pale gaze.

"I probably could but that's not my preferred method." I disclosed pulling on my soft hair with my hands thoughtfully.

"The spirits always come to me." I said a little quietly. It was true. I never had needed to call upon the spirits for a single case. It was almost like they were drawn to me Gene had informed. He theorized that they could see my aura just as I could see their manifested energy and was drawn to the golden glow. 'Like moths to a flame.' He had said.

"Well that's convenient then." Sam had said just as Henry came back into the house. Perfect timing came in threes today as Yasu poked his head into the dining room. "You guys are going to want to hear this as I tell the others." His be-speckled face disappeared back to the room as suddenly as he had came. The boys and I, Henry included, all hurriedly joined the rest of the group.

"Did you guys know about the murders that transpired here in the late fifties?" Yasu wasted no time getting into it. "Well we had heard some talk round town about and awful event here but we couldn't find much information about it." Henry answered before his boys could.

"We tried getting it out of the townsfolk but they only really know something real bad happened in this house." Lew added. Henry wiped his eyes with his hands looking exhausted.

"This house was such a good deal I didn't care about what had happened and I wasn't a believer in ghosts before those sort of things started happening right before my eyes." Yasu adjusted his glasses and leaned into his computer.

"Well it wasn't too hard to dig up but it's understandable that they wouldn't have wanted future buyers to know of the past murders that took place in this house."

Madoka's eyebrows raised and she pressed her note taking pen up to her lips. "Murders?" Sam almost whispered. "Yes four of them actually." Yasu confirmed pushing his glasses up. "Allegedly Jeff Larkin father of three daughters and husband to Mrs. Larkin took his shotgun and shot all of them dead in the middle of the night in their beds."

I put my hand up to my mouth to cover my gasp. How awful. "He was convicted of the crime then sentenced to hang. They say he had a history of beating his girls and his eldest daughter died pregnant with his child. He was suspected of raping her.

She was shot last and the murder weapon was left beside her body. He died insisting that he didn't kill his family." The room fell silent. Naru spoke next breaking the buzzing quiet. "That would explain why your daughters were targeted, but why you?" Naru thought out loud.

"Perhaps the spirits of the girls linger and haunt him because they confuse him with their father." Madoka suggested brows knit. Naru agreed with her passing his hand through his dark curls his head turned to the side and I marvelled at his sharp jaw.

I had just found out four innocent woman, mind you one of them pregnant were murdered in cold blood, yet I was here appreciating Naru's admittedly handsome face. I sighed what the hell was wrong with me?

"Mai, Madoka I think it would be wise for you two to stay close to Lin. He's the only one of us that can defend us from spirits." Naru said. Yasu took this chance to interject.

"Mai was taught to make warding charms by Ayako and Monk trained her in some of his mantras. Her powers are very reliable." Yasu revealed smiling. I felt my face go hot in embarrassment but I nodded acknowledging his praise.

"I'm impressed Mai that's great!" Madoka smiled at me as well. "I have a theory that Mai's charms are even more affective than Ayako's thanks to her purity." Yasu said as jolly as ever.

"Yasu!" I cried out. I was sure my face was as red as a tomato. He didn't have to go and tell everyone that my innocence was still intact. Lin coughed and Madoka put her hand on my shoulder.

"That's a good thing in my opinion my dear." She said laughing a bit. I growled with crossed arms in my best friends direction. Jerk.

Naru didn't engage in the compromising conversation instead had his head turned ignoring the teasing laughs.

"Mai can you make some charms for you and I, also Henry?" Madoka asked taking control of her case. I nodded face still heated.

"While you do that we will check out the entire house and property to see if we can find anymore hints." Madoka laid out the plan and everyone got to it.

Yasu stayed behind with me and soon the room was filled with the sound of clicking on a keyboard. I was grateful that the mortifying conversation had lifted the depressing heaviness after discovering the misdoings of the past.
