Mai' POV
-
Blue orbs floated all around beautifully. I was once again back in my dream world. I looked around and fingered the velvety petals of the massive Sakura tree.
They cascaded down from the gorgeous branches like soft pink snow. "Gene?" I asked letting my hair down.
Then there he was. A calm smile on his young face his deep blue eyes almost glowing like the balls of energy that gathered around. I shifted my attention from the enchanted scenery to him.
"How is London?" Gene asked approaching me. I returned his gentle expression. "You're brother has only changed in looks." I said studying his pale face.
"But you already knew that." I added knowing that Gene still appeared to Naru just as he watches over me.
"Yes that idiot scientist still hasn't gotten a clue has he?" Gene said under his breath mostly to himself. I giggled a bit at that my voice carrying through the plane like a bell.
Gene reached out and placed a Sakura behind my ear stroking a strand of silky chocolate coloured hair as he did so. I blushed wishing if only his brother could be as gentle and kind.
Though I knew somehow deep down I loved how Naru was closed off and distant. He had given me a real smile once and it still gave me butterflies to think about it. The rarity of it and the knowledge that he had only showed a look like that with me made it special in my heart.
"You must know it wasn't me who summoned you here." Gene said his eyes darkening. "I'm ready to see what she has to show me." I said looking away and closing my eyes.
Then my astral plane started to twist into a new reality. "I'm right here with you, this memory isn't pretty." Genes voice rang in my head and I could feel the faint touch of his chilled hand laced with my own.
But then I was no longer myself. I looked around the dark walls of the house. I was alone in a room my hands on my growing stomach.
This child was a curse. A horrible misfortune. I sat there remembering his hands upon me. It made me sick. My skin was crawling at the memory and tears ran down my face. I always knew my father was a monster.
He would beat my dear mother bloody and us three sisters would cower in fear. He hadn't always been this way I remember a different man before my youngest sibling was born.
Father had so badly wished for a son to care for the farm with him. My mother could only give him daughters and after my third sister she would bear no more.
Her body was weak and every child there after was miscarried. As the oldest I took on the responsibility for caring for my siblings as my mother suffered my fathers wrath. Never had I imagined he would eventually use my body to fulfill his wishes.
My mother was disgusted by my fathers behaviour our whole family was and she turned some of that hatefulness on me, called me a whore for taking her place. My sisters wouldn't even look me in the eyes.
As my swollen belly grew so did my family's resentment towards me. I too bred fury in my heart.
My whole being ached with turbulent emotions. I wished for my father to fall dead. Or perhaps death would be a blessing for what he did to me. He deserved to suffer as I do.
Here I sat in my rage and depression and wished I would just die. I sobbed quietly into the night my heart twisting and writhing in my chest.
-
"Mai!" I was shook awake by a concerned Yasu. "Ugh Yasu you know not to wake me when I'm in one of those dreams." I complained lifting my head up from the table we sat at.
My half completed charms were covered in tears and my head spun. "Mai you don't look so good." Yasu said wrapping his arms around my trembling body and holding me tightly while trails of salty tears escaped my eyes.
"It's not my emotions Yasu you don't have to console me every time this happens." I sobbed yet still leaned into his warm embrace.
"Just because they aren't yours that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt." Yasu said gingerly.
My heart ached for the oldest sister Heather. What a terrible thing to happen to her. "I saw Heathers memories she had been showing them to me before you brought me out of it." My voice shook as I spoke the weight of her depression weighing me down.
"I don't understand why their father would kill all of them something must of happened to make him shoot her. He wanted their child to be born. He wanted a son that's why he raped her. So why? Why would he kill their unborn child it doesn't make any sense." I feebly choked surly wetting Yasu's shirt with my weeping.
I felt him tangle his hand in my hair rubbing my head trying to comfort me. "It's okay Mai you will be alright now. Let's figure this out so we can save their souls." Yasu's tender voice calmed me down.
"Thank you." I managed a less shaken mumble. "You're right I want to save them all." I said feeling the dark emotions melt away.
Naru's POV
I blinked silently at the scene before me. Mai's small form wracked with sobs wrapped in her Japanese friends embrace his hand entangled in her hair. My heart sank.
How many times had she been consoled by him after a wretched dream? How many times had she cried like that? I found myself wishing that I had stayed with them in Japan. I found myself wishing that I was in Yasu's place.
The realization of this made me force myself back into denial. Any man would want to be able to protect their friends.
"Mai, Yasu what happened." I made my presence known to the two of them. Mai jumped out of Yasu's arms in surprise accidentally whacking him in the face in the process.
Yasu's glasses sat crookedly on his nose a dumbstruck look on his face. "Oh my god Yasu I'm so sorry!" Mai exclaimed adjusting his glasses for him.
"Holy Naru you sure gave us a start." Yasu laughed a bit his face a tad flushed. "Mai did you have one of those dreams?" I asked ignoring Yasu slightly out of spite.
I had always found jealousy unbecoming but I couldn't help it. Mai peered at me with red eyes and nodded. I pulled out my black notebook and sat beside her. "Can you please tell me what you saw?" I asked and she relayed her dream to me in detail.
I thanked her and let her get back to her charm making. Mai was right saying that the murder of the eldest daughter was strange.
I walked from the room and checked all of the technology studying each room intensely. It was strange how independent I was allowed to work now since I had returned to England.
Lin still insisted having one of his shiki watch over me but he was no longer always by my side. It was nice to have some space.
He was very easy for me to get along with but I appreciated that he considered me as an adult who was capable of taking care of myself. My powers still were difficult for me to control but as my body aged and got stronger I found that it could support a little of my power even without my twin.
It was nothing in comparison to what we were capable of together but I was aware that without my second half I would never be able to truly have a hold on my powers.
I exhaled deeply gazing out the studies window at the colourful dusk sky. It was painted with pink, lilac and royal blue as the sun disappeared behind the distant mountains.
I glanced at our screens that displayed the many spaces of the house. We had to be ready for what was to come tonight. So far the only evidence we had of the haunting was Mai's dream other than that we hadn't witnessed any occurrences yet.
"Naru?" I turned around and the girl who remained on my mind was standing there with two cups of tea. "It's almost nightfall Mai are you and Madoka not going to sleep?" I asked taking in her appearance.
She was dressed in light pink satin pajamas and her hair was pulled up into a messy bun with strands of curls escaping and brushing up against her delicate neck. My eyes followed her olive coloured neck to her pronounced collar bones then back up to her eyes.
"I heard you were going to stay up and watch the cameras tonight so Lin and Yasu can rest. As for Madoka she passed out on the couch and Lin is resting in the recliner in the living room." Mai told me.
I sighed how unprofessional. Not exactly unsurprising for Madoka to do but dragging Lin down with her?
"I um brought you tea. Henry and the boys headed to bed as well. I made charms for all of them for good measure." Mai reassured placing the tea beside me on the desk.
I accepted it and held the hot cup in my hands. I breathed in the steam that rose from the dark liquid. Somehow Mai's tea was parallel to none.
"You know a thank you once in a while would be nice." Mai muttered looking unimpressed. "I've thanked you before." I said amused by her obvious annoyance.
"I don't recall." She deadpanned rolling her eyes and taking the other seat beside me. I studied the cameras keeping my eyes on them. I was painfully aware of her proximity to me. So close that I could smell her vanilla scented lotion.
It was a faint smell not sickly sweet or overpowering like a perfume would be. I decided it was rather pleasant.
"I remember thanking you in the email I sent you." I said pressing the tea cup to my lips. She made a strange sound something between a groan and a growl.
"I even put my personal number on it so you could reach me." I added in a bored tone. "Riiight." Mai said lamely. "In case I needed a recommendation." She said looking at the rooms displayed on the screens with me.
Well that's how I justified giving her my number in all truthfulness I had hoped that she might call me for anything really. Though I would never tell her that.
"Hey Naru the temperature is dropping in that room." Mai pointed to a vacant room upstairs. "Could be a draft." I said noticing that the window was open. I had looked back over to her.
I liked her hair up like that. She looked the most like herself with it out of the way of her well structured face. My gaze must have lingered for too long because colour started to flood into her cheeks.
I pried my eyes away and continued sipping my tea. "Shouldn't you head to bed Mai?" I said. I figured she must be tired after a dream like that and I couldn't help but be aware that her and I were alone in a room.
As much as I despised worldly desire I couldn't help that I was a man. I wasn't often around people as I avoided their annoying presence as much as I could and being secluded in a room with an attractive girl my age was a first in a long time for me.
After a long period of silence I figured I was right about her being tired because she had already dozed off slumped over her side of the desk tea still in her hand.
I pursed my lips. I was glad that she still trusted me enough to be this vunerable in front of me. Or perhaps she just couldn't help it.
I didn't think anything could prevent the small brunette from sleeping. She looked so sweet and peaceful her loose strands of hair surrounded her heart shaped face like a halo.
"What am I to do with you now." I whispered under my breath. I couldn't control my hand moving a lock of hair away from her long dark lashes.
I quickly pulled my hand away as someone cleared their throat in the doorway of the study. "Lin you are awake." I observed blankly.
"Madoka started complaining about being uncomfortable so I was going to take her to the girls room." As Lin said that Madoka appeared beside him. "Awe look at Mai fast asleep what a cute couple." Madoka teased through her drowsiness.
I ignored her usual antics. "Can you please take her with you guys." I said eyeing her sleeping form feigning disinterest.
"Naru here's your chance to carry her." Madoka continued to pester me. I glared at her and rested my hand on Mai's shoulder. Her satin shirt was soft and cool to the touch and her slight back made my hand look big.
"Mai wake up." I said softly shaking her slightly. She moaned a bit and opened her eyes. "Naru." She breathlessly said my name.
I had to conceal the feelings it ignited within me. "Lin is her to escort you and Madoka to your room." I told her. She blinked drowsily but got up and they left me with only my own thoughts as company. This was going to be a long night.
Mai's POV
I awoke in a pitch black room. It took a couple seconds for my eyes to adjust to the darkness and I turned over in my bed. Madoka was across the room in her bed and was still snoring soundly.
My charm was clutched tightly in my hand and I looked at the alarm on the night table between the two beds. Ugh it's one. I thought in my head wishing I could have remained asleep. Then that's when I noticed a rapidly cooling chill in our room.
"Madoka!" I got out of my bed and hurriedly made my way to hers. "Madoka! Somethings happening." I shook her being more mindful of my loud voice.
She sat up and shivered. "Can you sense the spirits presence Mai?" Madoka asked transitioning into her serious business self.
"Yes though it is one I have not made contact with." I said goosebumps raising on my skin. "Lin's shiki is here also." I observed looking at the spiritual servant that swirled over head.
"You can see his shiki?" Madoka asked surprised. "I can see the energy that it uses to manifest yes." I said making out the smoke like glowing fox. "It's alerting Lin that somethings here." I said turning my attention to the unidentified spirit in our room.
"This spirit with us is being repelled by the charms I made." I said knowing that it would not be able to get any closer to us.
Then dread gripped me as a male voice filled the room. "I didn't do it." It was quiet at first. "I didn't do it." This time louder. "I DIDNT DO IT! I DIDNT DO IT!" The voice started to yell and Madoka brought a hand up to her mouth.
I immediately knew the spirit to be Jeff. "You raped her your daughter! How can you say you didn't do it. You beat them and then shot them each in the head while they slept." I cried out to the dark void before us.
"Don't kill me please! I'm not guilty! I didn't kill my family! It's the whores fault!" Jeff screamed. I covered my ears eyes wide hands shaking. The sound of choking and spluttering split through the freezing room.
I began reciting monks mantra as the sound of choking stopped and the sound of a rope swinging to and fro replaced it. I banished his spirit from us for the moment with the 9 cuts.
As I did so Naru and Lin both came through the door. "We were locked out what happened my shiki sensed danger?" Lin asked panting a little. Naru on the other hand looked rather stoic and calm.
"He was here wasn't he?" Naru guessed referring to Jeff. "Mai's charms protected us don't worry neither of us were hurt." Madoka answered Lin and got up to be by his side. I stood up as well not before wiping the sleep from my tired eyes my chest heaving as I caught my breath.
"You're right Naru he came to us. He was telling us that he didn't kill them." I confirmed my voice laboured. I was feeling rather dizzy and swaying slightly.
"Mai you are looking pretty pale, I think you should try to sleep some more before morning." Madoka said surely noticing my obvious fatigue.
"If Jeff returns I have ordered my shiki to fend him off from you two. I have faith in your powers Mai but you need some actual rest." Lin told me. I sat back down on the bed. "That reminds me Naru, Mai said she can see Lin's shiki you should add that to your report." Madoka suggested.
The two tall dark haired men raised their eyebrows in surprise. "You are full of surprises Mai." Lin said eyeing me curiously. "They look like foxes." I said my voice quiet and filled with drowsiness. I could feel myself start to lose consciousness.
"Something else will happen before sunrise." I predicted while half asleep. Then everything went black.
Let me know if you have an opinion on chapter sizes.
I'm not sure if I should make my chapters longer and upload them slower or if I should keep up with chapters this length and add them more often.
