Kawaki's POV
"Tch."
That dork's face is annoying. I switch my stares at the blonde idiot who is happily talking to his teammates. I don't know but he seems to instruct them.
"Are you okay, Kawaki?" the coach approaches me.
"Yeah," my short and bored reply.
A few minutes later, the referee calls out to us and tells us to proceed to the center of the court.
The game is about to start.
"All the Team Captains, move closer."
The referee orders and we both, the idiot and I, move closer to him.
"Get ready," he reminds.
We prepared ourselves and the stadium starts to roar again.
The referee throws the ball in the air and we both aim at the same target.
It's the jump ball.
"Tch, he got it," I murmur in my mind.
He immediately runs to the opposing court to get his first score. Well, I won't let him so I run after him. I am chasing behind his back while he is dribbling the ball.
His fangirls start to cheer for him and the idiot seems to enjoy the noise they are making.
How annoying.
I think I can't cope up with him this time and he's moving fast too. One of my teammates stops him from moving forward. He passes the ball to his teammate and the other idiot attempts to shoot.
My teammate tries to stop him,
"Shit, he fakes!" I cuss.
He passes back the ball to the blonde idiot and the latter shoots it.
He scores.
The crowd yells and the sound of annoying plastic bottles hurt my ears.
I try not to get distracted by the noise so I ignore them.
Now, it's our turn.
That blue-haired guy passes the ball to me and I dribble.
"It's our turn to hit some points," he tells me.
"Shut up, I know that," I answer back. I can see him scowl at me but I don't care.
I run in the direction of that idiot who's in the guard stance. I don't know how he plays defense and that was an offensive attack earlier, and I never saw him play.
Now, I wonder how he plays.
I try to lure him with my dribble style. His eyes are switching from left to right.
I move to my left and attack, but damn he reads it and tries to steal the ball from me good thing it did not turn in his way.
I still got it.
I am running out of time. I don't have any other choice but to shoot.
I jump to shoot and the blonde idiot falls for my trap, he jumps too. It's a fake.
I step backward before the three-point line and shoots.
And it's a three.
We're one point ahead of them, but we can't celebrate just yet, I know they will cope up sooner.
It's the blonde idiot dribbling the ball. I know he will avenge his team. I got some idea of how he plays. I can somehow read his moves.
As I have said, he would avenge his team and got another two-point score. And that, they are ahead of one.
It's just a very close game. When they score, we score too, and vice-versa.
Before the first half ends, they are ahead of five points from us. Their team is showing off great teamwork. I bet that blonde idiot is playing with them for quite a while now compared to me who just played with these idiots and actually it was just yesterday.
I have to admit that we lack teamwork, but if they keep cooperating with me, I can somehow manage to make this team win in the end.
That idiot is good in this sport so, I can't take him lightly. I still want to prove to him that I was not wrong for telling him what I said the last time we talked.
I don't know if he is aware of what he had caused me at that time. I bet he realized that he was a bastard for acting all cool.
The buzzer sound signals that the first half was finally over.
We got enough time to rest a bit. I can see my teammates pant and lose too many fluids from their bodies. I too almost lost all my body fluids.
I drink the water from the bottle throws at me by some random idiot. I don't know him though.
"How I wish I was the one giving him the water or wipe his sweats," I hear one of the annoying girls say from the bleachers.
I sharply look at her and she was astounded for a moment. The girl beside her nudges her on her side. I then look away and I did not hear her utter a word again.
"Boruto's an ace and they have great teamwork. I am betting on his team this year."
"Kawaki is good too. I have heard that he came from Shoujo High where high-class students can be found."
"Is that so? So, why did he transfer here then?"
"That's what I don't know."
I don't intend to eavesdrop but their voices are just too loud and it's annoying. It really annoys me that I wanted to punch all their face.
"It's just a five-point lead we can still make it out, right Kawaki?" one of my teammates asks me.
I did not answer. I don't have the enthusiasm to reply.
"What's wrong with you? If you keep acting like that we won't win this tournament. Act like a real captain!" he almost shouts at me. All of them look at me. He gave me a frowning face and I am sure he is just holding his temper.
I close the bottle with its cap and drop it on the bench. I look seriously at him.
"Just do your job and we will win this game," I tell him.
"What? Is that all? How can you act so confident that we will win this game by just doing our jobs?"
He is annoying, very annoying. I don't like confrontations. I would rather sit in a room all alone than talking to stupid people.
"Your job is to obey me as your team captain, right? So, when I say just do your job, do it. I am the one making the call anyway," I respond to his ranting. I leave him and I did not hear him say any more nonsense.
I bet he already gets it.
The referee whistles to remind us that the second half is about to start.
We have the ball and I think it's time for us to keep up.
"Hey, make sure to pass this after I signal you," I tell one of my teammates whose in my right. He nods and I pass the ball to him. We run to the opposite side of the court to make our point.
The Red Team is on defense and their defense is actually difficult to disband. He attacks, the idiot guy with me.
"Damn it!" I hear him utter in disgust when the blonde idiot's teammate steals the ball from the dummy in my team.
He did not focus on my signals at all.
"I'm sorry," he says but I ignore him I am busy thinking about how to retrieve the ball from us.
I dash towards the bastard who stole the ball and when he got distracted, I got the chance to steal it back.
Then the referee whistles.
"Foul, number nine!" he shouts.
Damn it! I thought I manage to get away from his watchful eyes.
"Tch," I utter in annoyance.
It's them another chance to score. A free throw.
I should be very careful next time.
Their supporters keep cheering for them and it's really damn annoying.
Two free throws and he missed them all. Good thing he did not add any more points to their team.
"It's okay. You can still try next time," the blonde idiot says to him.
We call for a time-out. I notice that my teammates are gasping for air and some have difficulty in breathing.
"It's okay boys, we still have enough time to make out for the five-point difference," our coach tells us.
"Yes, coach!" I hear them respond to him.
"Kawaki you should lead your team well as their captain," he tells me.
What? I was doing that the whole time.
"I do, I give them signals but sometimes mistakes can't be avoided," I answer.
"You're right there. Anyways, your time is almost over get ready," he utters and everyone stands up.
Then a whistle echoes inside the stadium. We're getting back in the court.
I am dribbling the ball. We can't let them walk ahead of us I guess.
I used to play calm and relaxed so I could think of a better strategy to destroy the opponent's defense.
I attack swiftly as I could.
"He is so fast!" I can hear one of the idiots says.
I pass through him and pass through another, I keep dancing with them until it's the blonde idiot guarding me.
Our eyes meet.
"Heh! Show me what you got!" he says while smirking.
Does he challenge me or something?
If he does, then I'll show him how I play.
"Then watch me," I accepted his challenge.
I dance with him. He tries to cope up with my rhythm. He is tough. I can say a very tough opponent for me but I ain't trembling and I ain't bothered with that kind of crap.
I flip and try to destroy his defense. I know he is struggling too but he seems not the one to give up easily. I thrust and he keeps moving backward. He is busy with his defense and forgetting that I can still attack.
I flip on his left and it's open. I jump and shoot.
It is that I could say, my best jump shot so far.
The stadium roars once again. The girls giggle and the annoying plastic bottles echo inside the stadium.
"Nice jump shot, Kawaki," the dummy is about to give me a high-five but I ignore him.
"Whooooo! Nice one, Kawaki! Three to go."
Annoying.
It's the end of the third quarter and the last quarter is about to begin at any time.
I glance in the blonde idiot's direction.
Is he smiling?
He is looking at the crowd. When I look in the direction of his stares, it is in the direction of the dork.
Well, who cares whom he's smiling at. I walk my way to the bench and drink some water.
After three minutes, the last quarter starts. We keep exchanging scores but there is still three points gap. Red Team on the lead.
The ball is in our possession and as usual, the opponent is in their toughest defense.
We need to break it again to tie the score. My teammate passes the ball to me. We are trying to lure them. We are on the attack. We have run out of time we must tie now and give our all at the last minute.
I dribble and that blonde idiot is guarding me. I know he is not confident with their three-point lead.
"I didn't know you would take my advice and join the sports club," he says to me.
"I did not join the club, the coach of this team asked me to be part of this tournament just for today," I reply.
"I see, so you must prove to me that basketball is a kid's game just like what you told me the last time we talked," he reminds me again.
"I am actually doing it right now," I reply.
I pass the ball to my teammate who is already in the position and when he receives it, he immediately shoots a three.
"Whooooooo! It's now a tie!" I can hear the crowd shout.
"Nice one!" My teammates rejoice after lifting the three-point gap.
I glance at the idiot and he looks bothered.
It's their time to break the tie but of course, I won't let that happen.
The blonde idiot is the one dribbling the ball and he is making gestures may be giving signals to his teammates. He has good leadership skills I admit.
And now they are attacking. He charges against us. I take responsibility for him. I try my best to strictly watch over his movements. I must sure he can't let go of my defense.
He dribbles twice and shoots. That is a failed one. So, I move closer to the ring and rebound.
I got it.
I run on the opposite side and the idiot is keeping up. He runs fast. Now, he overtakes me and stops me from my tracks. I keep dribbling the ball and looking for an opening.
"Damn it!" I panic. He steals it from me.
He runs back to their base. So, I need to catch up to him. When I look at the shot clock, it's twenty-five minutes left.
Damn!
The idiot passes the ball to his teammate and he shoots and fails. He still got the rebound. He is about to shoot a three when I immediately steal the ball from him.
I run back to the base and the idiot is so fast and blocks my way. He is strictly guarding me.
Ten seconds left.
I am surrounded by his boys. Damn it. I can't move.
I got an opening and passes the ball to my teammate and the attention is switched to him. I can feel the crowd's tension as well as the blonde idiot's weariness but he still tries and maintains his composure.
When they try to stop my teammate, my idiot of a teammate passes the ball back to me and I am in the position to break the tie.
Well, once I am in the position...
I am unstoppable!
Two seconds...
One...
Buzz!
The crowd shouts and the stadium roars, a sign that the game is finally over!
