The chain on Lucas' pocket watch jingled as he drove his Model T down the dirt road toward her house. The freshly-picked bouquet of lilies bounced merrily in the passenger seat, as if they knew their purpose. A gift for Elizabeth. He arrived in front of the last row house and pulled off to the side of the road as the car squeaked to a halt. He smoothed his hair, fixed his crooked cufflink, and carefully grabbed the bundle of flowers. He cleared his throat as he walked up to the porch steps, and before he could even reach the door, it swung open swiftly. There she stood, beaming with that beautiful grin of hers. A tiny giggle and two blue eyes came out from behind Elizabeth's pale yellow dress.

"Hey...who is back there? Do I hear a handsome, young man?" Lucas teased. Another giggle, and then a "Boo!" Little Jack jumped out, with his arms stretched up toward Lucas.

"There he is!" He said, as he scooped the tow-headed toddler up in his arms.

"Hello, there. Are you having a lovely day with your mother?" Jack flashed his dimples and nodded.

"That's wonderful!" Elizabeth watched the exchange in awe and admiration, still holding the door open.

"Um...sir? What is this in your ear?" Jack touched his ear and frowned.

"I donno?" he said, tucking his shoulders up to his chin. Lucas reached his hand behind Jack and revealed a small, plush horse. Black, just like Sergeant. Jack's eyes lit up, as if the toy really had materialized out of nowhere.

"Horsey!" He grabbed it and squirmed, and Lucas let him down. Jack's footsteps pitter-pattered into the house, and Lucas stood to greet his love.

"Hello," he said in his deep, gentle voice as he kissed her.

"Hi!" she replied, looking up at him with a grin. Her heart leaped when he returned her gaze with a knowing smirk. Lucas took a step back and offered the lilies, slightly smashed from the interaction with her son.

"For you." Elizabeth looked at the bouquet, then back up at his eyes. She reached for the flowers with a small, crooked smile and inhaled when her fingers brushed against his.

"Thank you," she said. "They're beautiful."

"Momma! Lucasss! Look at dis!" called a little voice from the living room.

"Would you like to come in?"

And so, he did.
