Emergence

Chapter 1

Ned Bigby lay on his bed. For the first time in his life, and on a warm spring day no less, he had been sent home from school. For the last few days, he had had been plagued by headaches and waves of dizziness. the room just seemed to start spinning and he would end up falling over.

It was sort of freaking him out. this had never happened to him before. Every time the dizziness would hit him he would fight it down with his will until the spinning stopped.

Then he had a strange thought.

"What if, the next time the dizziness comes I didn't fight it off, but instead I just go through it and let it pass on its own?"

Ned nodded to himself as he thought this over.

"maybe If I let it pass on its own I won't be so tired." He murmured. The words were barely out of his mouth when another wave of dizziness hit. As the room started spinning, Ned just relaxed and let it come.

The room seemed to spin faster and faster until finally Ned blacked out. he wasn't sure how long he was unconscious but when he came too he was in for another shock. He looked down and saw that every blood vessel in his body was glowing with an eerie blue light!

The glow suddenly became a blinding flash of light that was gone as mysteriously as it appeared. Ned was left sitting on his bed stunned and wondering what just happened. Then he noticed that he suddenly felt better than he ever had before in his life.

He looked at his watch it was five o'clock apparently, he had been unconscious for two hours! now that he felt fine it occurred to him that if he hurried he might be able to catch Moze and Cookie and go with them to them to Epic Nights at Adventure mountain Theme park.

He got up, showered, dressed in jeans, t-shirt, and a denim Jack with a hood. Then he headed downstairs. It took a few minutes and assurances to convince his shocked parents that he was fine now.

About 30 minutes later his dad dropped him off at the entrance of Adventure Mountain. He hurried up to the gate. There he found Cookie and Moze. The lady at the gate scanned their passes and let them in.

Ned looked over and saw cookie fiddling with his computer and something in his hand.

"Cookie," he said suspiciously, "What are you doing?"

"I'm executing phase 1 of operation make Lisa Zemo forget all those other guys and fall for me when I get her alone on the most romantic ride in the park!" Cried Cookie exuberantly

"you mean the Sky Wheel?" said Moze

The Sky wheel was the tallest Ferris wheel in the state. It was 350 feet tall and the young couples would often ride it together. The ideal for a young couple was to be at the top of the wheel when it stopped to start changing passengers. The couple in the gondola at the top would have a few minutes together alone with an amazing view of the entire park and grand Lake beyond. More couples had gotten together on that ride than any other in the park.

"Uh Cookie," said Ned, "you're not thinking of messing with the Sky wheel somehow?!" but it was too late Cookie had already run off to find Lisa.

"I've got a bad feeling about this." Muttered Ned. A split second later his own heart sank as Faymen arrived and he and Moze hurried off to do their own thing.

"Of course, Faymen would have to be here." He sighed, "Half the class hangs out here every chance they get and Moze must have called him."

Left by himself, Ned wondered off to find something to do. This park wouldn't be as much fun without his best friends at his side. But he could understand them making other plans, after all they didn't expect him to be there that night.

Ned went and rode a couple of his favorite roller coasters. Then he wondered around a little more before finding himself standing at the top of the second highest place, the top of the observation tower.

He looked down toward the Sky Wheel. New riders were loading onto the sky wheel.

After a few minutes of looking around he headed down the stairs to the ground he was on his way back down toward the Sky Wheel when suddenly he heard a scream behind him. he whirled around and saw a guy in a ratty leather jacket grabbing a purse from a lady a few yards behind him. the punk took off running.

On impulse Ned made grab for him and caught the arm with the purse. The guy pulled out a switchblade with his free hand and jammed it as hard as he could into Ned's chest. To his and Ned's shock, the blade snapped off like it hit a solid block of steel.

The shaken purse snatcher dropped the purse and just took off running as fast he could. Ned zipped up his jacket and returned the purse. He was half in a state of shock himself.

He walked off wondering why the knife blade hadn't penetrated his skin and what's more why he hadn't felt any pain at all.

He was suddenly Jarred out of his thoughts by another scream.

"The Sky Wheel!" someone shouted, "it's gone crazy!"

Ned looked up and saw that the Sky Wheel was spinning about three times faster than it should have been and getting faster!"

Then he had another surprise when his vision zoomed in on Moze and Faymen in one of the gondolas as well as Cookie and Lisa. Cookie was frantically fiddling with something in his hand.

"Oh no, Cookie, what did you do?!" cried Ned as he took off running and suddenly became a blur of motion as he raced toward the Sky Wheel. He skidded to a halt in front of the Sky Wheel but fortunately everyone was so distracted by the unfolding disaster that nobody noticed his burst of super speed. The operator in the control booth had been driven out of the booth by flying sparks as electricity arced from the equipment. The surrounding street lights were flickering on and off.

He was yelling to another worker that his control console had gone crazy and he couldn't figure out why!

Ned decided to check the master control room under the base of the Ferris wheel. He hopped over the railing and headed for the staircase that had the KEEP OUT sign on a chain in front of it. jumping over the chain he headed down the stairs into the master control room.

He found it in as much chaos as the operator's booth. The master computer was flickering on and off, The speed regulator was arcing electricity had most of the other equipment was throwing as shower of sparks.

Ned walked over to the computer ignoring the arcing electricity and shower of sparks. Suddenly the he spotted something on the side of the computer that appeared to be wired to it. it was a receiver for a remote-control system.

"Cookie," he muttered shaking his head.

He pulled it loose and disconnected the wires, but it looked like the damage had already been done. The shower of sparks stopped but the wheel was still out of control.

Ned spotted and service ladder and came off of it in an alcove in the base of the wheel. The gondolas were still flying by at break neck speed.

There seemed to be only one way that Ned could see to stop that crazy wheel!

"Well," he said to himself pulling up his hood, "Time to see just how invulnerable I really am!" he took a deep breath and jumped in front of the rotating support arm of the ride. When it slammed into him, the entire wheel lurched like it slammed into something hard. The riders in the gondolas were rattled violently by the sudden stop, but they were all thankful that the wheel had stopped. Ned, again, felt no pain and to his own amazement he was overpowering the Ferris wheel and holding it in place!

A few seconds later the straining motors exploded, and the wheel seem to go limp.

Once he was sure the wheel was really stopped, Ned sped away.

Never noticing two stunned brown eyes watching him.

Moze felt like she was going to throw up and it and the flickering lights didn't help with her vision either, suddenly the Ferris wheel had slammed to a stop. After everything stopped spinning she looked around and could swear she saw someone holding the Ferris wheel in place!

Ned waited nearby while the rescue workers got the people out of the gondolas. A few minutes later Moze and Cookie appeared on the walkway. Ned grabbed them and pulled them aside.

"Are you guys okay?" he asked worriedly

"Well, Faymen, Lisa, and half the other people who were on the wheel are at the nearest trashcans and bathrooms tossing their cookies but other than that we're alright!" replied Moze, "That was one scary ride though!"

Cookie was looking scared and worried all at the same time.

"Uh guys, I got to go, I uh left something back at the Sky wheel!" he said

Ned caught him and pulled him back, at the same time, he reached down and pulled the remote-control receiver out of his pocket.

"You mean this?" he snapped.

"You've got it!" said Simon looking relieved

"Yeah," said Ned, "Now get rid of it before anyone figures out this near disaster was your fault!"

Moze's face darkened into a scowl.

"What do you mean it was his fault?!" she growled

"Go ahead, Cookie," said Ned Glaring at Cookie, "Tell her what you did!"

"I-I J-Just wanted to make sure that when Lisa rode the Sky wheel with me that our gondola stopped at the top for a little longer because some many couples have fallen in love up there. So, I attached a remote- control receiver to the computer in the master control room. I just don't understand what went wrong."

"I tell you what went wrong," said Ned, "Your receiver wasn't compatible with the master computer. When you turned it on, it shorted everything out! that's why the Sky Wheel went crazy!"

"Simon, you did this?" said a familiar. Cookie cringed and turned around to see Lisa standing there. She had approached without them noticing.

"Uh L-Lisa, I just wanted to give us a longer view!" Cookie stammered

"I can't believe you Simon!" said Lisa getting angry, "You scared the crap out of me and everyone else and you could've killed someone!"

"Lisa I'm sorry, this wasn't supposed to happen!" pleaded Cookie

"Simon, I'm sure I'll accept your apology eventually, but right now I'm going home!" replied Lisa, the turned and walked off without looking back.
