Disclaimer: I do not own either RWBY or Eyeshield 21.
The audience blinked as they found themselves vanishing from the Theater and finding themselves in a new area. They stood outside a large coliseum that looked like Amity Arena if it wasn't floating.
"What the? Where are we?" Neo asked as she looked about. A quick look down and the thief saw that she was recessed in casual/civilian clothing. She wasn't the only one, as everyone was changed into different clothes.
"Where's my cloak!?" Ruby panicked. She looked around, trying to see if she can find her article of clothing.
"Ruby, I think you are wearing it," Summer said pointing at her red hoodie.
"This...doesn't feel right," the young girl pouted.
"Where are we?" James repeated Neo's question, this time more firmly.
"Sorry, you find yourselves in a world with no Aura or Grimm. And you are here to watch some sports," the Curator replied as his voice echoed in their head.
"And that sport is?" Tai asked, an exciting aura was around his body when he heard they got to watch something simple. Ghira, Kali, and Qrow were in similar states.
"I will explain the rules as it happens. Your tickets are in your pockets and you have been given money to buy snacks and the like. Enjoy your time here."
"Ren! Penny! Pyrrha! Let's go!" Nora shouted as she grabbed her friends and dragged them towards the smell of food. Team RWBY was not far behind them. Raven had stalked off to who knows where, as did Salem's faction. Although Emerald had vanished off on her own. Ilia joined Sun and Neptune on their adventure as the parents walked off as well. This left the teachers to find their spot.
The audience found themselves staring into a giant stadium, sitting in seats close to a grassy field. On either side of the pitch were two posts that looked like a square Y and in the middle were lots of white lines that had some numbers on them. All around them, everyone was dressed casually but lots of them were dressed in some sort of jersey. The side they were sitting on was dressed in black, red, and white. Those across from them looked to be charcoal black and gold.
"What was this game called again?" Glynda asked from her seat amongst the red and black crowd.
"American football. We are watching the high school playoffs," the Curator informed them.
"And I take it that Mr. Arc is taking part," Ozpin said, nodding to himself.
"Why is it called American football?" Terra asked as she bounce Adrian on her foot. He seemed a little distracted by all the noise and colors.
"To differentiate it from the football known around the world," the Curator told her. "One is more...involved with feet to the other."
"But why…" Saphron asked but stopped herself. Sometimes that's how it worked out.
A couple of seats away were the teens watching excitedly. Sure it wasn't a fighting tournament but it should prove interesting. "Got to say...some of those girls are hot," Ilia said. Sun, Neptune, Coco, and Ren nodded. Even Nora nodded her head along with her boyfriend. What was the chameleon Faunus talking about?
In front of them were cheerleaders...well only their side. They were dressed in red and white cheerleader uniforms and being led by...Weiss Schnee?
"Holy crap…" Yang snickered.
"And why are you laughing?" Weiss demanded, feeling a little weirded out by what she was seeing.
"The fact that you are far more fun is astonishing."
"I can be fun!"
"The difference between your other and those girls are like night and day too," Mercury taunted from his spot.
"No one asked you!" Weiss shouted.
"DEIMON!" Weiss cheered happily as she waved a flag with a giant red cartoon bat on it. The crowd was also cheering the name and sometimes responded with a "DEVIL BATS!"
"Devil Bats?" Winter asked. "Such a strange team name."
"If your sister is anything to go by, that must be the team the Arc boy is on," James hummed.
"WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE FIRST MATCH OF THE TOKYO SERIES QUARTER-FINALS!" shouted the voice of one Peter Port. "Today we are here to watch as two teams who had battled tooth and nail to get to this point in our High School American Football League!"
"That is oddly fitting," Qrow chuckled as he saw Port sitting next to Lisa Lavender.
"Tokyo? I've never heard of that place before," Raven mumbled to herself. While she wasn't here for the sport, she would use this time to just relax.
"The crowd has gathered and the teams are awaiting their time to shine before all of you! So let us commence with our Deimon's entrance!" From the corner near them, the audience saw smoke coming out, hiding the entrance of a hallway.
"OOH! They're coming out!" Penny cheered as she heard music playing.
"First we have the Ace of the team! The Lightspeed Running Back! First-year student! RUDY ROSE!"
"WHAT!?" Ruby shouted in surprise. "Rudy?"
"Guess you're a guy here," Blake said. "I've heard that some worlds were odd like that." Something she thanked the interdimensional version of Roman for the hints at. Worlds with different genders were out there.
Out of the smoke ran a tiny male with spiky black hair with red tips. His jersey was predominantly red with two black stripes in the middle and white outlines. On the back and shoulders was the number 21. He was carrying his helmet, which was black with some red bat wings around the center, with his right arm.
"He looks so much like you," Pyrrha pointed out in surprise. "A bit shorter than you but…"
"Yeah," Velvet nodded. "Almost a dead ringer for Ruby." The young woman blinked her eyes owlishly. She never thought about that.
Around them, they started to hear whispers, namely of surprise. That quiet kid from school was the badass known as Eyeshield 21?
"What's with this Eyeshield 21 business?" Tai asked. To his surprise, it wasn't the Curator that told him but a member of the audience.
"You mean you don't know? He's the fastest kid in the league! Barely anyone can touch him once he starts going! And eyeshield because he has a cover for his eyes."
"Huh...good to know."
Weiss stood on top of the entrance and smiled. "I've been waiting to say this for so long," she said to herself. Taking a deep breath, she shouted. "RU-DY!" The grin on her face told her she was more than happy to say that aloud.
Blake and Ilia perked up at the sight. A quick look between the cheerleader and the athlete and they knew...there was something more going on there.
The crowd took a second but they began to cheer Rudy's name. In his embarrassment, Rudy began to bow.
"Don't bow!" Ruby shouted at her alternate. "Why are you embarrassed! You're a cool star!"
"Says the girl who didn't want to be the bee's knees," Yang snickered. That caused the little sister to blush.
"It's because he wasn't an athlete until a few months ago," the Curator replied. "It was because of bullying and other factors that lead to his mentality. Funnily enough, he's a bit more like Jaune than the Jaune you know."
"Let us continue with their procession! Next is the unsinkable ship! The man who can lift to 160 kg/352 lbs! Magni Valkyrie!"
"I'm a guy too?" Nora perked up as she drank some soda.
"This will be an interesting thing to see," Ren said as he took a nacho from her tray.
Walking stiffly from the smoke was a large, in both size and girth, man with cropped orange hair. He looked to be a little nervous as he swung his arms and legs vertically. On his jersey was number 77.
It took all of a few moments before all the teens started to stutter in shock. "What happened to Nora?" Velvet asked.
"I mean, nothing is wrong with that," Neptune replied.
"It's just…" Coco tried to figure out what to even say.
"He's the exact opposite of her," Sun told the rest.
"He's not that different," Nora laughed. "Just not as confident as me!"
"But what about his size difference?" Blake wondered.
"So? He's me! Who cares if he's bigger?" Those who were commenting and the adults found that was a very adult way of thinking coming from Nora. Ren hugged and kissed his girlfriend for that.
"Next is the man who put his life on the line for catching! The flying monkey! Sun "The Kong" Wukong!"
"WOO! I'm on the team!" the monkey Faunus cheered.
"Who else would be on it I wonder?" Roman asked as he drank some root beer. Since this was a high school game there was no alcohol.
Sun ran out with his helmet under his left arm. A large grin was on his face as he pointed at the crowd. The biggest difference between him and the Sun watching was that this one was short. Barely as tall as Rudy. His number was 80.
"You also look a bit like a goof here," Emerald told the Faunus from her seat...which was right next to Ruby. This caused some people to scream in surprise, having not noticed that the thief was sitting there.
"The Gentle Idiot is next! Whitley Schnee!"
"My brother is here?" Winter asked, surprise coating her voice.
"Was...was he called an idiot?" Salem asked, barely containing her laughter. What sort of announcer would call someone an idiot over the intercom?
An older teen with chin-length white hair with a ponytail, and a goatee entered. On his jersey was the number 37. He had his right leg up and winking at people…until he heard himself being called an idiot.
"Impossible!" Whitley shouted and fell on the floor.
"I know my brother may be a bit…" Weiss started trying to think of what to say.
"He's a bit ignorant," Winter said, supplying the word for her sister.
"Yes, ignorant. But I wouldn't call him an idiot."
"Well," the Curator started to say. "He's not that dumb. This version of Whitley does know how to do stuff but…"
"But," Penny wondered as she listened. This was a strange change to hear about. Why would someone be dumb?
"But he can only apply those smarts when it comes to American football. Even then, he's not that smart. He's barely managed to even get into a high school that lets almost everyone in."
"Gentle Idiot?" Lisa Lavender, who had been sitting next to Port, asked.
"I had thought of two nicknames for the boy and just fused it."
"Peter," Glynda groaned. Even though this was a different version, it seemed like he went with his instincts and was a bit boisterous. Even to the point that he made fun of the young Schnee.
"I think you just insulted the poor kid."
"Coming up next is the line that protects the people! Here is an expert in a small man's techniques! A super-powerful pea tank! Oscar Pine!"
Everyone still seemed confused by this person. No one seems to know who he is. Well, everyone save for Ozpin who knew who he was.
A young man with tanned skin and messy brown hair walked out. He was as short as Rudy and Sun but seemed to pack a lot more muscle and fat. He gave a cocky smirk and flexed his biceps. His number was 55.
"He is not like the Oscar I met when the visitors came," Ozpin mumbled to himself.
"Following are the Ha-Ha Brothers! And the first is the one who exercises balance and technique, Sky Lark!"
"Ha-Ha Brothers?" Blake wondered.
"There's bound to be an example, do not worry," the Curator chuckled.
"I'm surprised he's even on the team," Velvet uttered.
"Don't worry bun. It might be like the ABLT and he's not an asshole," Coco offered.
"Oh he and the other two assholes," the Curator replied. "But it's more because of their situation than anything else. Rudy's actions have led them to be better…as well as the captain giving them a chance."
Sky walked out with a determined look on his face. The 51 was worn proudly on his jersey. The biggest difference here was he had scars on his face and his hair was cropped shorter into spikes.
"What happened to him?" Neo asked.
"He and the other Ha-Ha brothers are delinquents and got into numerous fights."
"Circumstances you say," Tai hummed. Being a teacher himself, he had already connected the dots. They were bullies probably due to people looking down at them. Whatever the counterpart of his daughter did urge them to be better people.
"With speed and fighting spirit, Russel Thrush!"
"That's two out of four," Pyrrha said, wondering if all of CRDL was there.
The other delinquent walked in, his Mohawk was gone. Instead, his light green hair was down as he marched toward the field. There was a large 52 on his back.
"And completing the trio is the powerful and hard, Dove Bronzewing!"
Dove walked into the field, putting on a pair of orange-tinted sunglasses as he stood next to his companions. He was more muscular than the one they were used to. The 53 completed the set.
"Well, at least Cardin isn't here," Yang suggested. "He's usually the head asshole."
"The one with the super-powerful kick enters the stage! The 60-Yard Magnum! Lie, Ren!"
"They do know that's just a lie right?" Ren said as joined the team. He was the most different from the ones people knew, outside of Ruby and Nora being men. This Ren was tall, very buff, and had a beard. Despite that, he was supposedly 17. An 11 graced his back.
Unlike the shock of seeing a rotund Nora, seeing a bearded grizzled Ren had his friends laughing. "And…he's seventeen?" Ren said carefully as he looked at his other-self. "Why does he look so old?"
"Genetics," the Curator offered. That…did not dissuade the feeling of confusion for Ren.
"The sleeping optical weapon! Neptune Vasilias!"
"We're on the team together!" Sun cheered, shaking his friend.
"Yeah, we are!" Neptune said happily. "I wonder how I would look."
A skinnier version of Neptune entered the field. A lot meeker too as he bowed his head to people. His hair was also slightly balding but that didn't stop the grin on his face. He wore his jersey with the number 16 prouder than most.
Neptune suddenly felt his smile vanish. His other self looked weak. Like, ridiculously so.
"He doesn't look like he should be on the field," Cinder said dismissively.
"He seems too weak," Raven said dismissively.
"I know I'm an intellectual but…" Neptune said with some despair. "That's a bit too much…"
"Then there is the plain Nolan Proforio…"
The camera barely stayed on the guy in a number 30 jersey.
"Wait who?" Qrow asked as the intro vanished.
"And then the three who have been put into the team to be used as the captain sees fit." They showed a trio of people not to be viewed by the people. They did see a bulldog version of Zwei chasing after them.
"Okay…" Saphron said slowly as she looked around. "But where's my brother?" Even those random people went first!
"I'm sure he'll come out," Terra told her wife. "Especially since he was said to be a player. He might be on the other team?"
"The Curator did suggest that he was actually on Deimon's though," Summer said. Terra pouted at Summer who held her hands up in surrender.
"And last but certainly not least…"
"See! That might be him!" Terra told Saphron.
"The man who can melt pure white ice into dark sinister mist!" The fog started to turn dark as a figure began to walk through it.
"Uh…" Saphron started to say, not knowing who could this be.
"The commander from hell!" Red glowing eyes were seen through the dark fog.
"That… might not be Jaune…" Ruby suggested. This was oddly ominous!
"The captain of the Deimon's Devil Bats! JAUNE ARC!"
"Oh…" Ruby said blushing. As was Terra. Why would the boy they know to be called the commander from hell!?
Standing before them was Jaune Arc with a very cocky smirk. His hair was ridiculously spiked up and he has a couple of piercings on his ears. His teeth were oddly sharpened to fangs. He was skinnier than usual. The number 1 graced his clothing.
"Well, this is odd," a new voice said as they sat next to Winter. People turned their heads and noticed an older woman with white hair sitting there. She looked rather regal if not tired though. "From what the odd man at the theater said, he doesn't sound like this Jaune Arc fellow."
"Uhh…who are you?" Ilia asked, surprised that someone from the theater had joined them.
"Willow Schnee," she introduced herself. Weiss and Winter's eyes grew wide. "And yes, the one from our world."
"Mother?" Both sisters said in unison.
"Yes. I had arrived at some odd movie theater when an earthquake happened at home. The man there said something about magic and said I can find you two here," Willow explained. "Your father and brother wouldn't happen to be here would they?"
"No, they are not," Winter replied, still shocked. The Schnee matriarch took a moment before nodding.
"Enough about that for now. Shall we watch the show?" Weiss and Winter share a look and notice that their mother looked a little less…exhausted as she sat there. The younger of the two was about to comment before Winter subtly pointed at Qrow, making both pairs of blue eyes understand a little.
If the magic of the Theater could help an alcoholic…maybe it could do the same for their mother?
"Elf brother, where's big sis?" Weiss asked Jaune as he passed her. The man cackled and pointed his thumb into the hallway.
"Elf brother?" Sun repeated. He looked closer and saw that Jaune did have pointy ears and snorted. "Okay. That's a good one."
"I am in this?" Winter asked, after all that version of Weiss seemed to be asking about her sister.
"Not you, but more of a title given to an older female that you respect," the Curator replied.
"I would have been surprised to see you in a cheerleader outfit," Willow told her daughter as she drank…some lemonade.
"You and me both," Qrow chuckled. Winter growled at Qrow, some light dusting of red appearing on her cheeks. She did not need to know that from Qrow! Especially in front of her mother.
"And their manager who handles all their internal affairs! Pyrrha Nikos!"
"Oh!" Pyrrha gasped in mild surprise. "I guess all of JNPR is together in this one."
"Woo!" Nora cheered, high-fiving her fellow redhead.
"You're not supposed to do that, you know?" Pyrrha chided Jaune. She came out wearing a red sweater over white pants and held a clipboard. In response, Jaune blew a bubble and smirked.
"They seem to get along well," Penny noticed the two stand next to one another, completely at ease
"Their relationship is…complicated to say the least," the Curator thought of how to explain it. "They started rather antagonistically. With Jaune being a bully and Pyrrha protecting Rudy from him. But the longer they interacted the more Jaune began to accept Pyrrha as basically his second in command. And in return, she's the only one outside of Ren to see past his facade and can see moments of weakness."
"But they're not romantically involved?" Ilia asked. "Because it sounds like they're romantically involved."
"Kind of like the plot of the sixth Ninjas of Love book," Willow piped up. Seeing the confused looks from people, she just smiled. "When you're husband is like mine, you try to find anything as a sort of escape. Those books were part of it for me. They're works of art."
"Thank you!" Blake shouted in vindication. Although she knew people did like it, hearing more people say so helped.
Pyrrha rolled her eyes and looked across the grass to the opposite side where their opponents would come.
"And standing against them are the gods of the Kantou region!" Despite it being a clear day, lightning stuck darkening the other entrance.
"Well, this isn't ominous at all," Mercury joked as he got comfortable in his seat.
"Gods?" Salem whispered to herself before rolling her eyes. She just remembered that this was a world without powers, so it was just a saying.
"The undefeated team in the west!"Lightning struck again and in the sky, there seemed to be a giant serpentine figure.
"The Shinryuji Nagas!"
"Huh, that sounds like a powerful team," James said, wondering what they'll be like.
One final flash of light later, and stood the opposing team. Dressed in black jerseys with golden flames, they stood before the Devil Bats.
"They certainly look the part of the villains," Kali said, looking over the team. The fact that the name of the team sounded very much like ancient Mistrali was surprising. Heck, even the name of the other school and the area sounded like it. Maybe this was its world's equivalent?
And standing at the forefront of it all was Raven Branwen. His hair was done in dreadlocks, smirking at the team. A pair of sunglasses hid his eyes from view.
All of team STRQ and Yang had dropped their jaws at the sight of a male teen version of their wayward member/mother. Not to mention the dreadlocks!
"What am I looking at?" Qrow stutters, double-checking to make sure his drink wasn't alcohol.
"Why do I look like that!?" Raven demanded.
Qrow stood behind him, head shaved and a little despondent. And to his right was a male version of Vernal from that one superhero world.
"Wait? Qrow's there too!?" Summer shouted.
"And bald…" Tai said barely above a whisper.
A Cartoonish dragon appeared with the words Shinryuji Nagas clashed against a red cartoon bat with Deimon Devil Bats beneath it.
Man...that was what? Seven months since I spoke to all y'all. And that period, each time I tried to write that Critical Role chapter, I got a few words in and went...damn. I can't write this. So, I decided to do something else first right now.
I'm going to do a small chapter (This one) and a long one (the next one) of one of my favorite mangas of all time, Eyeshield 21. Hopefully, this gets my writing juices flowing again. From the looks of things, there's approx. 21 chapters/336 pages to be translated.
