AN: Okay, so I've been sick for like a month, and I haven't been able to work on anything, but I had this idea. So I wrote it down and sent the idea to the group chat and they liked it. (Well, actually, Nina sent me a video saying it made her cry so) But when I finally start feeling a little bit better, I start working on this a little bit. Then red came out, and I was listening to that when I was writing the majority of this, so that's the vibe and the titles. Enjoy, even though it's sad.
Jo reached for the puke bag she had been clutching the moment the pilot announced that they officially touched down in Kansas City. She had been fighting the urge to vomit the whole flight and she finally lost the water and pretzels she ate. It was the only food she had been able to keep down all day. Her fellow passengers looked at her in disgust as she kept heaving until there was nothing left, but the flight attendants were polite and kind as they offered her napkins and water. Jo lied that it was just airsickness and they believed her. At least they let her off the plane first, allowing her to get away as soon as possible.
Now, here she was, standing in front of the Kansas City Hospital with the feeling of nausea rising in her again. Jo rubbed her stomach as if it would help calm her from the outside. It did a little bit, but it didn't help the dread inside her. She didn't want to be here, but her husband left her in a letter and she deserved more than just that.
Jo took a deep breath and smoothed out her red blouse before she took a step forward. She walked into the building and up to the receptionist's desk, trying to hide her nerves as she clutched her bag. Several staff members passed her by without a second glance as she walked up to the desk, unaware of the drama that was about to unfold. Luckily there was no one waiting in line and they looked up at her when Jo approached the front desk.
"Hello, how can I help you today," the blonde receptionist, whose name tag said Ella, greeted her with a bright smile as she turned away from the brunette nurse she was gossiping to.
"Hello, I'm here to see Dr. Alex Karev," Jo said, trying to appear more confident than she felt.
"Of course, can I get your name and date of birth? What time is your appointment?" Ella asked, clicking her fingers on the keyboard.
"I'm Jo Karev and I'm not here for an appointment. I'm here to see him personally. I'm his wife," Jo said, holding up her hand to show off the rings on her finger.
The diamond on her engagement ring and the silver band that accompanied it sparkled in the light, clear for the two of them to see. Ella and the nurse looked up at her up and down with eyebrows raised in stunned silence.
"Can I get your ID?" Ella asked a little hesitantly and Jo handed her her wallet with their wedding photo opposite to her driver's license.
The nurse in the green scrubs just shook her head and set down the paperwork she was looking over. "Hello Mrs. Karev, I'm Jada. Dr. Karev should be in his office. I'll take you up to see him now."
"Thank you," Jo said, letting out a breath as she walked to follow Jada, not even bothering to correct her and mentioned that she was a doctor as well.
They walked over to the elevators in silence and for that, Jo was grateful as she twisted her wedding rings. Jada glanced over at her as they got on the elevator and Jo pretended not to notice it. She knew all too well how hospital gossip could work. However, at this point, she didn't care about the drama. Alex deserved whatever comes of this.
"I'm guessing you know about everything," Jada asked her, testing the waters as she side-eyed Jo again.
"If you mean my husband's affair or his secret kids with his ex-wife because the answer is yes to both," Jo said, looking over at her as Jada tilted her head and gave her a sad smile.
It was a look that Jo was all too familiar with. She got it from Meredith, and Link, and everybody else back in Seattle. When she came to Kansas, she suspected she would get the same look from people there too.
"Izzie Stevens had an affair with my husband a few years ago," Jada said as Jo's eyes widened and Jada turned to face her. "At the time, she justified it because they were in love, but after a few months with that crazy, my husband came crawling back, begging for my forgiveness. I made the mistake of taking him back, only to have him cheating on me with someone else a couple of months later. Any man who cheats on you isn't worth a moment of your time."
Jada looked her firmly in the eyes and Jo took in her words of wisdom with a simple nod of her head. She looked down at her wedding rings, placing a hand on her stomach as she felt the nausea rise inside of her again.
"I wish I could let him go, but it's complicated," Jo said as she thought about everything that she and Alex had together.
Their loft, their life, their love, and the family that they had created together. She didn't know if there was a chance of getting that all back, but she deserved to know if it was all a lie or not.
"How far along are you?" Jada asked as Jo looked up to catch her staring at her stomach where Jo held her hand.
Jo quickly dropped her hand and just shook her head. "I'm not pregnant. It's just that stress makes me nauseous."
"Uh-huh," Jada hummed as she looked her up and down.
Whether she believed her or not, it didn't matter. The rumor mill would turn without her. The elevator door dinged as it opened and Jada led her over to the office spaces passed named doors. She stopped in front of an unmarked office where there was just a number. The missing nameplate was evidence of Alex's new position. She learned he got the job here from Bailey the day she also read his letter. She could hear laughing from the other side of the door and Jo didn't have to guess whose laughter it was. Alex's voice was as familiar to her as always and she could guess that the high-pitched giggles were that of one Izzie Stevens.
Jada grabbed the door handle and glanced back at her. Jo gave her a nod and she opened it up without knocking. Suddenly the door was opened to reveal Izzie and her husband and she saw Alex for the first time in two months. He was sitting at the desk facing her and he looked as good as ever. His short brown hair and beard were checkered with grey and there was a slight smile across his cheeks. His eyes wrinkled with happiness, but his smile wasn't directed at her. It was directed at the thin blonde woman sitting on his desk and smiling as well. Jo had seen pictures, but they did her no justice. Izzie Stevens was everything that Jo had ever imagined her to be and more. Her smile lit up the room, and it made Alex happy, but it brought Jo no love or comfort and only made her stomach churn even more.
The moment only lasted for a second, but for Jo, it lasted a lifetime. It was frozen like a picture in her mind before Izzie and Alex both turned to see her standing in the doorway. Jo mustered up all of the courage that she could. All of the anger and pain that was inside of her swelled up at the sight of them together. She stepped into his office and looked at Alex as he caught her eye, his lips parted in shock and his eyebrows raised as he took her in.
"Alex, we need to talk."
