The Knight was sitting in it's chair, when Koneko decided to join it, the two nodding at each other. Still, the game it had with Sona was still with it, it was thinking of ways to defeat the girl. It was close, perhaps it should have been more aggressive? No matter, sooner or later, it would defeat her, just as it defeated the Radiance and endured all the pantheons of godseekers. As it was sitting on the chair, barely paying attention to the class, it noticed Koneko glancing in it's direction every now and then. As soon as the bell rang, the Knight stood up, but before it could go somewhere, Koneko walked up to it.
"...Something wrong?" It asked.
"...Here," She said and handed over a small piece of paper. "… Going to the rooftop?"
"… Not today, here," The Knight said, hid the paper, before handing over a bag of sweets to Koneko. "… Walk together home?"
"… I don't mind," She replied, began munching on the sweets before leaving the classroom.
He then pulled out a piece of paper and began reading quietly, "… Dear Arthur Knight, I would like to invite you to Occult Research Club. If you wish to know more, please come, preferably during break or shortly after the school."
That could wait, first Sona and a rematch. The Knight then made its way to the Student Council, the rest of the club already there. However, something seemed to be different, the atmosphere of the group seemed a bit tense. Did it do something wrong? Perhaps almost defeating Sona meant that it couldn't be at the club anymore? It hoped not.
"Knight, can you please have a seat?" Sona said and gestured to the Sofa.
The Knight nodded, sat down, turned towards Sona and asked, "… Is it because of the game between us?"
"No, it's not," Sona replied with a weak smile. "I hope you don't mind, but I would like to engage in a bit of a discussion with you. Tell me, Knight, do you believe in the supernatural?"
"… Supernatural? Vampires? Dragons? Ghosts?" It guessed, while the girl nodded. "… I don't."
"Then what if I told you they exist?" She asked.
"… I would ask for a proof," It replied.
"I thought so, before that. Tell me, Knight, if you could choose between living a life not knowing about the supernatural and knowing about all that lurks in the dark, what would you choose?" She asked.
"… Ignorance is a bliss, President. If the supernatural truly exists I would rather live not knowing about them," The Knight replied.
"… I see. In that case, allow me to apologize, because the supernatural found you," She said and all of the members of the club grew wings. "… Do you know what we are?"
"… Vampires?" It guessed, though, mostly because it wanted to keep the knowledge low, which made them smile wryly.
"I am afraid not, we are devils," Sona said. "Do you know why I am telling you this?"
"… Something happened?" It guessed, while Sona nodded.
"… That's pretty accurate. However, before we continue, what do you think of this development?" Sona asked.
"… Nothing, doesn't change anything," It replied, making Sona and others blink.
"Wait… nothing?" Sona asked, not able to believe her own ears.
"… President is President, devil or not, same with everyone else here," It replied, while Sona and the rest of the council smiled, even Saji looked surprised.
"We are glad to hear that, I was worried about that. Still, there's plenty more we need to speak of," Sona continued.
"… We do not," The Knight said, while Sona raised an eyebrow.
"What do you mean by that, Knight?" She asked.
"… I do not wish to know more about the supernatural world, I do not wish to be part of it," It replied.
"So, you want to live your life as an ordinary person?" The Knight nodded in response. At first, Sona opened her mouth, before she closed it and smiled weakly. "You know, a part of me is happy to hear that, but on the other hand, I am afraid it's not as simple as that."
"… Why not?" It asked.
"You have caught the attention of Rias Gremory as well as myself and… both of us hoped you would be interested in a certain proposal," Sona began.
"… What kind of proposal?" It asked.
"I would like to know if you would be interested in joining my peerage?" She began. "However, I suppose I should explain what it means, shouldn't I?"
"… If you could," The Knight replied.
"Then, let me handle it, Sona," Tsubaki said, while Sona nodded. "Peerage is a name for a group of devils that serve their master in exchange for power, wealth, longer life and such. A king of said peerage can turn other races into devils. The system is based on Evil Pieces, similar to that of chess."
"… What if someone doesn't want to be a devil anymore or runs away from the King?" The Knight asked.
"They become stray devils, who only crave death and destruction and have to be put down," Momo said.
"… There isn't a cure?" The Knight asked, while the girl nodded. "… It's a slavery."
"It is not a slavery!" Sona protested.
"… Similar to slavery," The Knight added. "… Becoming a devil, a one way ticket, leaving master causes insanity and death, in exchange for servitude."
"It's not inaccurate, but slavery implies physical violence and treating others as their possessions," Sona said.
"… True, more appropriate term, Indentured Servitude. Very abusable, used by other devils for their own personal gain, wasn't it?" I asked, while Sona nodded with a hurt expression.
"I won't deny that there are devils like that, but the laws forbid that," She explained.
"… The laws only work, for as long as they can be enforced," The Knight said, making Sona look like she swallowed a lemon. "… What are the benefits and downsides of becoming a devil?"
"Outside of lifespan, which is over ten thousand years, the devils can use magic, become stronger and gain a peerage of their own in the future," Tsubaki explained. "As for the downsides… anything that is related to God of the bible and sacred texts causes a lot of pain to all devils, though some gain resistance. And if a devil dies to a holy weapon… they turn into dust, never to recover."
"… Amen?" The Knight asked, making all the devils wince. "… Bad weakness."
"It is," Sona agreed. "So, what do you think, Knight?"
"…I do not wish to become a devil," The Knight said.
"I can't say I am surprised, though, I have to ask, have you met a dragon recently?" She asked, while the Knight shook its head. "I see… Now, I hope you don't mind me asking, but I hope it will not change relationship between us?"
"… It won't, but… what does Rias have to do with it?" It asked.
"Rias became interested in you, due to recent events, she hopes that you will join her peerage," Sona replied. "And… I am afraid she is rather stubborn."
"… Will she take no for an answer?" The Knight asked, while Sona smiled weakly.
"I am afraid she won't," Sona admitted. "She tends to be very stubborn and has got a bad habit of not taking no for an answer."
"… In that case, is it possible for us to make her believe that I have joined you instead?" The Knight asked.
"That's… Hmm… it's not a bad idea, it would keep Rias off your back, that's for certain and let us work together regardless. Very well, I accept, we will say that you joined my peerage with a usage of a single pawn," Sona said. "Although, I do hope you understand that everything that was said here must remain a secret to ordinary people?"
"… I do," The Knight replied and stood up, before walking up to the President, her wings still out and extended it's hand. "… Pleasure working with you, President."
"The pleasure is mine," Sona said and returned the handshake, the wings of the council hiding. Everyone seemed relieved. It wasn't the best case scenario, but at least Knight didn't see them as monsters that were there to get his soul.
Momo then walked up to it. "So, we are bound to do some more paperwork together."
"… Indeed," The Knight replied with a nod, before Sona cleared her throat.
"I was hoping for something a little bit different, but I am happy with the result nevertheless. Though, I have to ask, are you a genius by any chance? You learned chess so quickly," She said.
"… Not a genius, very stubborn," It replied. "… Shall we play?"
"What about Rias?" Momo pointed out.
"Hmm… that's true, what do you think we pay her a visit instead, Knight?" Sona asked.
"… Let's," The Knight agreed.
Rias was sitting enjoying her tea as she thought of a strategy to get Knight to her peerage, when she heard a knock on the door.
"Akeno," Rias said, before the girl nodded, the entirety of the Student Council behind.
"Ara, please come inside, I shall make some tea," Akeno said.
"Thank you, Akeno," Tsubaki said, as everyone made their way inside.
"Good Morning, President, everyone," Kiba greeted.
"… Morning," Koneko said, her eyes glancing at the boy.
"Good Morning," The group greeted back.
"So, Sona, what brings you here today?" Rias asked, though she had a pretty bad feeling about this whole situation.
"It's regarding Knight," Sona replied and gestured to the boy.
"… I have decided to join Sona's peerage," The Knight said, making Rias spit out her tea, as she coughed violently.
"C-come again?" She asked, not able to believe her own ears.
"… I have decided to join Sona's peerage," The Knight repeated itself.
"Sona…," Rias pouted. "I didn't even get to try!"
Sona smiled slightly, before she corrected herself. "Well, Rias, a deal is a deal."
"That's not fair…," She whined.
"Perhaps, but knowing you, you wouldn't have given up, even after you were rejected," Sona pointed out.
"I am not that stubborn," Rias protested, while Sona gave her a deadpan. "… Well, just a bit. So, he knows about the supernatural?"
"… I do," The Knight said, making Rias sigh.
"… You know, I am a bit disappointed that you didn't accept my invitation or at least considered my offer," Rias said, as she walked up to him. "You sure about that? Unless you have changed into a devil already, my offer still stands."
"Rias…," Sona protested.
"… No point, don't care about you," It replied, making Rias wince.
"Well… what about Koneko?" She tried.
"… Koneko is not related to joining your peerage," The Knight pointed out.
"She is, you could spend more time together," She pointed out, while the girl glanced between the two.
"… Indeed, but, that's not enough to change my stance," The Knight replied, before turning to the aforementioned girl. "… You don't mind, do you?"
"… No," She replied and shook her head.
"I see… okay, that's fair," Rias admitted, before turning to Sona. "So, congratulations, Sona. I hope it works out for you."
"You don't have to worry about that," Sona replied. "Now then, we shall be taking our leave."
"Wait a second… Sona, did you come here from the council to inform me of this?" Rias asked.
"Indeed, I have saved you some time, didn't I?" Sona asked, while Rias frowned.
"So, that's why… Alright, enjoy your new member, Sona," Rias said.
"I will, now, Rias, have a nice day," The girl said, before she and the rest of the council left the Occult Research club.
"… She did it on purpose," Rias said with a scowl.
"Ara Ara, I didn't know Sona had that in her," Akeno said. "It seems like she really didn't want to give up her precious Knight, did she?'
"That only leaves Issei," Rias grumbled. "… I messed up, didn't I?"
"A bit," Kiba said with a weak smile, the girl turning towards him. "With all due respect, Rias, perhaps you should have at least talked to Knight?"
"… I should have," Rias admitted with a sigh. "Well… at least he shouldn't have any sacred gear, well, I hope so. If he does… I think I will cry."
Akeno giggled in response as she gently wrapped her arms around the girl. "It's alright, Rias. Issei also has got a draconic scent around him, perhaps his sacred gear is rare and powerful?"
"… Maybe," Rias replied, enjoying the hug, before she glanced towards the door, through which the Knight left.
"So, Knight, we still have got some time left, would you like to play a game of chess?" Sona asked.
"… Let's," The Knight replied.
After that, the rest of the day was rather normal. Everyone in the council seemed fairly happy with today's events. Sure, Sona didn't get a new member for her peerage, but the Knight didn't mind them being devils and they would still be on speaking terms. It was a small victory, but a victory nevertheless, she even got to enjoy a game of chess that actually made her think, she still won though.
"… So, may I go, President?" The Knight asked.
"Go right ahead, we will clean up, I will see you tomorrow," Sona said, the Knight nodded, bowed and left.
"That went well all things considered," Momo said with a smile on her face.
"It sure did," Tomoe agreed. "Though, I am still surprised he didn't even react to our wings."
"Considering how stoic he is, I am not that surprised. However, I am happy he doesn't treat us any different because of our race," Reya said.
"You can say that twice, Reya," Tsubasa said. "He is an interesting human, that's for certain."
"Pff, that stoic act won't last forever," Saji said.
"I don't know that, it sure makes him seem all cool and mysterious," Ruruko said.
"I still wonder who is that dragon that he met," Tsubaki pointed out.
"Hard to say, but even he thinks he hasn't seen a dragon, so they probably hid their true form from him," Sona said. "In any event, I am curious what dragon he interacted with?"
"Should I send a familiar to watch the Knight?" Tsubaki asked.
"No, let him go. He didn't want to be involved in the supernatural world, so the least we can do is respect his wishes," She said.
"What if that dragon hurts him?" Momo pointed out.
"That is a possibility, Momo. However, if the dragon was hostile to him, I doubt the Knight would be alive at this point," She explained. "We don't know what kind of dragon that is, so it's best we are careful."
"That seems like the best solution," Tsubaki said.
"… Hello," Koneko said.
"… Hello," The Knight said back. "… Shall we go?"
"… Let's," Koneko agreed, the two walking next to each other.
"… Why did you decide to join Sona?" Koneko asked, while the Knight glanced towards her.
"… Rias, stubborn, too much hassle," It replied, Koneko's lips curling just very slightly upwards.
"… She is, why not join her then?" She inquired.
"… Only seen as means to an end," It replied.
"… Not inaccurate," Koneko said. "… Did you invite somebody to your house?"
"… Won't tell," The Knight said.
"… Was it a girl?" She asked.
"… Won't tell," It replied. That actually interested her, who did Knight meet? Was it a bearer of a sacred gear? A genuine dragon? She wanted to know.
"… Dragons are dangerous," Koneko began, the Knight glancing at her. "You need to be careful."
"… I will keep it in mind, Toujou," It said, the girl giving it a deadpan.
"… Koneko," She said.
"… Toujou?" It asked.
"… Koneko," She said.
"… Koneko?" It asked, while the girl nodded. "… Knight, just Knight, not Arthur."
"...Knight," She repeated, while the vessel nodded. A few moments later, the two found themselves in front of the apartment. "… Be careful."
"… I will," The Knight said, before the girl nodded, the two saying their goodbyes.
As soon as the Knight passed the door, a knock on the door alerted it to another guest. "… Good Afternoon."
"… Good Afternoon," Ophis greeted, the Knight letting her inside. "… Scent on you, why?"
"… Long Story," It said and prepared another bag for Ophis.
"… What happened?" She asked as she sat in front of him.
"… Soon. Question, you are a dragon, aren't you?" It asked, while the girl blinked.
"… How?" She asked.
"… Devils, at school, draconic scent," It explained, while Ophis eyes narrowed.
"… Not fair, I don't know what you are," She said.
"… Can keep a secret? Forever?" The Knight asked.
"… I can," She replied.
"… Do you promise?" It asked, while the girl nodded. "… Vessel."
"… Vessel…?" She asked, while the Knight nodded. "… What is a vessel?"
"… Won't tell," It replied, the girl staring at him, before she relented.
"… What happened today?" She asked.
"… Devils, invited to peerage, told of the supernatural," It summarized.
"… Did you accept?" She asked, curious about the decision.
"… No, don't intend to, happy with my current body," It explained.
"… Okay," She replied. A part of her was glad that wasn't the case. "… What do you know of dragons?"
"… Big Scaly Lizards, breathe fire, powerful," It said.
"… Not inaccurate," She said. "… Yet, I look different."
"… Not all dragons are the same," It said.
"… Correct," She said. "… How strong are vessels?"
"… How strong are dragons?" It asked, the two staring at each other.
"… Won't say," She replied. "… Secret for a secret?"
"… What secret?" The Knight asked.
"… The power I felt, the one you used ten years ago… What was it?" She asked.
"… Then in return, dragon, what kind of dragon are you, detailed," It said back.
"… I accept, do you?" She asked.
"… I do," The Knight replied. "… You first?"
"… Ouroboros Dragon, strongest dragon, born of infinity, chaos, nothingness," She explained. "...Your turn."
"… Abyss Shriek, SOUL power, shaped by… the Void," It settled on.
"… Soul power? Soul consumption?" She asked, while the Knight shook its head.
"… Evil dragon?" The Knight asked and this time Ophis shook her head.
"… The Void? What is the Void?" She asked, while the Knight shook its head.
"… Mustn't tell, can not tell, too dangerous," It explained.
"… I see. Won't ask more, thank you," She said.
"… Thank you too, Ophis," The Knight said.
"… Don't die, you're interesting," She said, while the Knight blinked, it's lips turning slightly upward, before it quickly corrected itself. "… You smiled."
"… I did," It admitted. "… Can you? Be even that way?"
"… Okay," Ophis said and smiled, well as much as she could, it came off looking more like a grin. "… Happy?"
"… Yes," It said. "… Game of chess?"
"… Let's," She said.
Sorry for the mistakes in the previous one. Two genders are confusing as hell. Worst part about this chapter, I wanted an action sequence, but it will have to wait.
