Chapter 2 : Preparing

November 20th 1986, 9:58 am, Hill Valley, California.

A voice responded through the door.

"Who is it?"

"It's me Doc, I came here just as you asked."

The door opened to reveal Emmet wearing a dirty lab coat over a yellow and orange Hawaiian shirt with his googles.

"Good morning, Marty, come in, come in! I have to show you something incredible that I have discovered!"

Marty followed Doc through the surprisingly clean house and inside his laboratory, it was filled with old scientific equipment that Doc had been using since the 50's or spare parts from his old failed inventions. Some looked like they were actual machines once while others were just plain junk.

"So, Doc what do you need me for?"

"Well, a week ago, I was researching about future society and technologies with the intent to document it all in a personal journal I wanted to write for quite some time to use it as type of guide book while travelling through the future, so I took the DeLorean to the early 21st Century and while on there I learned a lot of truly amazing things about the future but one stood out from all of them!".

"What was it, Doc?"

"Superheroes."

"Superheroes!? So, you 're telling me that in the future superheroes exist!?"

"Yes Marty, from what I have gathered they mostly inhabit New York City."

"Let me guess... you want to us go there in the future so we can study 'em or something like that?"

"Exactly, I am planning to do that, however I might want to inform you that we are going to stay there for exactly 1 week, it will take some time for us to research these heroes so you should probably bring a suitcase with your clothes and any other thing you 'll need."

"Okay Doc but... what about your kids and Clara?"

"Don't worry, they are on vacation in 1893 for 2 weeks with Clara's parents in New Jersey, so they 'll be fine for the time we will be gone, they won't even practically notice!"

"Right... hey Doc, why are exactly going in 2005 could we maybe choose like... a different year?"

"Unfortunately, we can't, 2005 is the only year where all the superheroes who I want to study are alive, active and in their prime."

"That kinda makes sense, so uhhhhh... Doc, are we leaving now or-"

"Of course not Marty, we 'll meet outside at my house at exactly 4:45 am, then quickly fly to New York and then at exactly 5 am, travel to the year 2005!"

"Got it Doc, but let me ask you one last thing, why do we need to depart at midnight?"

"Marty, you aren't thinking 4th dimensionally! We can't let people see the DeLorean outside of my house in the day! We 'll use the darkness of the night to hide the DeLorean's departure and return!"

"Okay then, I 'll see ya in few hours!"

"Goodbye Marty and remember be there on time!"

Marty then walked out of the house, pulled out his skateboard and rode it back to the Main Square. There he started just walking around town, thinking to himself about the fact that Superheroes really existed! No longer were they just drawings in comics, cartoons on TV but real people, actual living beings spreading law and order throughout the whole world and he was going to meet one tomorrow, at least in his point of view.

4 hours later, Marty returned to his house, finding it empty, as he expected, his siblings and family had jobs too after all. The only person who had stayed since he left for Doc's was Biff but that was just because he had to wax the family car too. Since he was alone, Marty called his girlfriend, Jennifer, to have a chat... like they always did or even arrange for another movie or concert date! After he was done talking to her, he tuned up the living room radio and started practicing his guitar, as The Pinheads were gonna play in the school stadium next weekend in front of the school committee.

The next day at around 4:40 am he woke up silently, quickly closed the radio alarm clock and without making a sound, left the house with a small suitcase he had packed in secret and his backpack, skated in total midnight darkness with little or no visibility to Doc's house. When he got there, he saw that Doc Brown was waiting for him outside wearing a leather jacket, a hat, a quite out of place blue and yellow Hawaiian shirt, holding a suitcase and looking at his watch.

"Marty... you arrived just in time, quick, give me your suitcase and get into the DeLorean then, wait for me!" He said while running towards the trunk of the car.

Marty got into the DeLorean, buckled his seat, and started looking around inside. He felt some sort of... how would his mom put it... Deja-Vu? Last time he was in it, he and Doc were chasing Edna in 1876.

After a few minutes, Doc entered the DeLorean in a hustle, he started it up with his keys and positioned it in the middle of the street. He then activated the hover system and lifted away from the Lion Estates Neighborhood. Normally, flying from California to New York City would take hours, however, a hover converted DeLorean with upgraded boosters from 2017 only needed 8 minutes to get there at a much faster speed than any other type of transportation available in 1986.

While on the air, Marty asked:

"Hey Doc, shouldn't we... you know... change our clothes? I mean we are goin' to the future after all!"

"No need to Marty, the change in fashion which we saw in 2015 doesn't occur until, at least as I have calculated, late 2007! So, our clothes should be just fine for 2005 standards."

At around 5 am they arrived outside N.Y.C, they silently landed on a small road outside of the city, making sure nobody was watching them, Doc said with confidence:

"Marty, turn on the Time Circuits!"

"Time Circuits on, Flux Capacitor ummmm... fluxy ? Everything looks fine to me, Doc."

"Okay Marty, Input the destination November 20th 2005 at 9 in the morning!"

Marty quickly inputted the destination with ease.

"Hold up Doc, why aren't we flying back to 2005? Wouldn't that a hell of a lotta easier?"

"No Marty, that's too risky, we could be easily spotted in the air in the DeLorean and our cover will be immediately blown and it 'll lead to us being discovered as time travelers, that could be decimating for the integrity of the space-time Continuum!"

"Actually, now that you say it, flying the DeLorean in public before hover conversions were a thing doesn't really sound like a good idea."

"Okay then, let's go back to the future!"

Doc revved up the engine to 55 MPH while braking, he released the brake sending the car towards the road. At the exact moment the DeLorean reached 88 mph a faint glow developed at the front of the car and then nearly engulfed the vehicle. The coils lit up, internal circuits glowed, and the flux capacitor fired rapidly and then the car was gone leaving a trail of fire behind it.

To be continued ...
