An Interesting Drink

I focussed on our teacher during our Biology lesson, so that I wouldn't look at Edward. He would just distract me way too much and I didn't want that. So, as the great student that I was, I made notes on everything and even asked a few questions.

Mike might´ve felt that something was off about us, because he stood next to me the second the bell rang, indicating it was lunchtime. I smiled at him, happy to end this awkward silence between me and Edward. I mean, I could only distract myself for so long before the truth crept in and found me.

¨You´re an eager student today,¨ Mike teased me as we walked towards the cafeteria together.

¨I´m always an eager student,¨ I teased him back.

He didn't ask me anything about Edward after that and I was glad, because I wouldn't want to give him an answer anyway. Our little fight, if you would like to call it that, was something between Edward and I, not between Edward, I and the rest of the school.

Man, I really needed to stop thinking about him!

I saw Jessica sitting at an empty table, so Mike and I joined her while we waited for the others to arrive.

She sighed. ¨I´m really going to fail our next exams.¨

¨Come on, Jess, you know you´re smart,¨ Mike comforted her. ¨So you'll nail it, I'm sure you´ll do.¨

I didn't know that for sure, but if Mike said so…

¨Who nails what?¨ asked Ben, who just joined us with Angela. They had been dating these past couple of weeks, just as Edward and I.

Woman, stop thinking about him!

¨I´m having a crisis!¨ yelled Jessica, answering Ben's earlier question. ¨If I won´t ace my mathematics final, I'm screwed. No college would ever take me!¨

¨It won't be so bad,¨ I tried to calm her. Maybe my words weren't as soothing as Mike´s, but I tried to help her somehow, because after my talk with Lauren, Jessica backed off as well. So, we weren't exactly the best of friends right now, but it still pained me to see her so distressed.

¨Maybe I can help,¨ Angela timidly offered.

¨You would do that?¨

Angela chuckled. ¨Of course! I love maths.¨

Ben´s arm was around her in an instant. ¨And I love you,¨ he whispered in her ear, low enough so the others wouldn't hear him. Angela blushed and smiled warmly at him.

But damn it, I could hear him and I didn´t want to. I almost felt jealous as I stared at the both of them, happy and in each other's arms.

If I turned my head just slightly, I could see the Cullens sit at their usual table. I felt they were there and I could even hear them, even though they were quiet. The air was electrified when Edward was around, that was the only way I could explain it. I just knew he was there, watching me.

Without thinking, I turned my head slightly and caught Alice´s stare. That was not the stare I was hoping for, but I´ll gladly took it. She smiled apologetically at me, and I shrugged.

´Yes, Alice. I have also missed you and yes Alice, I´m also angry at you,´ I thought.

¨What do you think, Bella?¨

I turned my attention back to the group. ¨What?¨

Taylor, a friend of Mike, laughed. ¨Are you up for some hot chocolate at the local diner with us? I mean, if you wanted to drink a soda with Mike, I figured you would like it more with some actual nice people.¨

Mike laughed and smacked Taylor with the back of his hand. ¨I am actually nice, jerk.¨

I looked at the small group of students that had formed around us. Wow, I really had to be lost in thought and too focussed on Alice, as I had not seen we sat with quite a lot of people. Ben and Angela, Mike and Taylor, Jessica and Lauren, although Lauren was busy with her phone as she had found a girlfriend from another school two weeks ago.

¨I didn't even know there was a local diner.¨

Mike winked. ¨It's where all the cool kids hang out.¨

¨My god Mike, no one ever says that,¨ Jessica laughed and before I could blink, they were in a heated discussion about slang and what was considered normal to say for a high schooler nowadays.

I watched them bicker in awe and held back my laughter.

¨But will you come with us?¨ Angela quietly asked me. I thought about it for a second before I nodded.

The rest of the day, I was eagerly waiting until the final bell rang, because it would be the first time I would do something so normal as drinking hot chocolate milk on a rainy school day. I texted my parents that I would be home later today and waited until the others arrived.

As I had no idea where we would go, the rest drove and I followed them in my car. I couldn't help but feel excited. This was just as I needed, time with humans!

A chill ran down my spine as I thought about vampires mixing with humans in Seattle, but I would not let some vampire I didn't even know at all ruin my afternoon.

As we arrived at the cutest little restaurant I had ever seen, Taylor immediately ordered the waiter for seven mugs of hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream. It gave me the impression this wasn't the first time they came together here to drink, be away from home and just simply enjoy each other's company.

We sat near the window and I was pressed between Ben and Mike. The table was a bit small for seven people, but it was cosy. The radio was already playing Christmas songs, and I smiled thinking about my upcoming Christmas and finally getting my memories back.

Taylor turned to the group, to show us he had the tiniest bottle of rum with him, hidden in his backpack. I giggled at the sight and he winked at me.

The waiter arrived with our drinks, and he even sprinkled some mini marshmallows on top of it. It looked delicious and we toasted.

¨To what?¨ I asked.

¨To being seniors,¨ Angela said seriously.

¨And to finally going to college. I can't wait,¨ Ben added.

Taylor poured a bit of his rum into his cup. ¨To booze, may it never leave this cruel world again, for it brings so much joy,¨ he said solemnly.

¨To love,¨ Lauren dreamingly exclaimed, once she could lay her phone down for a minute.

Mike smiled at each and every one of us. ¨To friends.¨

¨And to hot guys, don´t forget the hot guys,¨ Jessica loudly giggled, all previous fear about college gone.

We all had to laugh and I felt a couple pairs of eyes on me. Oh, it was my turn now?

¨Me? Well, I guess I'll go with Mike. To friends!¨ I happily joined them and I leaned forward to toast.

But… Everyone leaned backwards and my eyebrows rose. What was going on here?

¨Oh, no, no, no, Bella. You have to come up with your own thing,¨ Ben explained to me.

I thought of something and leaned in again.

¨To family. The one we have and the one we chose,¨ I smiled.

This time, everyone joined me. ¨Cheers!¨

I tasted the liquid comfort and laughed at every whipped cream moustache I saw.

Before I knew it, I was in a deep discussion with Jessica and Taylor about which magical creature would be the most powerful, the hottest and the deadliest. While I certainly wanted to answer ´vampire´ on every question, Jessica seemed to be under the impression that werewolves had to be deadlier, but witches could be sexier. Taylor only had eyes for the sexy Halloween outfits one could wear, so he also voted for witches as the sexiest creature.

I mean, come one, just look at the Cullens! But, I couldn't say that out loud, so I also settled on witches.

¨You are all wrong. The sexiest are fairies or mermaids,¨ Mike interrupted us. ¨Unicorns even.¨

I raised my brows. ¨Mermaids? Seriously.¨

He nodded. ¨Yeah! They're hot.¨

¨Mike, with all due respect, but mermaids live in water. Their skin gets wrinkly and I really don't think they look the same as Arial.¨

¨Let a man dream, Bella,¨ Mike sighed.

Jessica giggled. ¨Besides, how would you see yourself with a mermaid? They have tails! But I believe fairies are also cute.¨

I giggled with her. Until I started to wonder what vampires would have… down there? I mean, I knew everything worked the same with my parents as with humans, I guess. But how would Edward…. Edward´s anatomy? Vampires anatomy? I didn't even know!

I felt my cheeks redden with each passing second as I thought about how awkward that would be, but no one noticed it, thank god!

The door of the restaurant opened and something, or should I say someone, caught Jessica´s eye. She turned around in her seat. ¨Ooooh. Who's that hottie over there?¨

I should've known Jessica would fancy Jacob!
