Spoiler Warning!
If you haven't read the manga yet, I'm so sorry but the story is now at the Infinity Train Arc. It's what the movie will be about, so if you don't wanna get spoiled maybe bookmark this and wait until after you've seen the movie or maybe read the manga - it's amazing btw!
Also, I will start with branching off the story next chapter. I'm so nervous as it's the first time that I'd do anything like this... anyway, enjoy and thank you so much for reading!
"So, this is a train? It looks… scary." It was a huge metal contraption wherein hundreds of people could all fit inside at the same time. I also saw an automobile on our way to the train. It's a little difficult to think about how much change the country went through while I stayed in my little corner. Of course, I got a glimpse of the progress that was happening, but the progress in a city is just mind-blowing!
"Ah, don't worry Y/N-chan! I'm with you, so no need to be scared." Kyojuro assured me, a friendly hand on my shoulder. I still can't believe how much he changed. He was already getting taller when I last saw him, but I now have to look up when talking to him. Still, that booming voice of him is the same. And if it were possible, he's gotten more energetic too.
We settled in our seats, and I can't help but take it all in. It still feels bizarre – I've only ever walked to places! "Y/N-chan, how are you liking the train so far?" Kyojuro inquired, nudging me with a smile. "It isn't so scary once we're inside. Looks like one of those modern houses." Another thing I discovered is how much western influence there was in the city. A lot of folks wearing western clothes and infrastructures looking different than back home.
"It does, doesn't it? Makes traveling comfortable." We settled in silence after that, and I continued watching the people outside. I can't deny that this new fashion looks nice. I wonder how I'd look in those dresses and hats? "Uhm, Y/N-chan?" The smile that seemed to be on his face constantly was gone when I turned to look at him. It was replaced by this curious look on his eyes, making his thick eyebrows push up, knotting his forehead.
When he continued to look like he was stuck in a debate with himself I spoke up, guessing what he wanted to talk about. "I think I should be about seventy by now. More than seventy. You remember Yori?" He nodded. "Nobu's grandfather?" "Yes. He's my younger brother."
"That's why Nobu called you obaachan. Because you really were his grandmother." He looked like he was still processing it all. I can't stop giggling at the whole situation. "Oh, Kyo-kun. I can't believe your father never told you! Or that you never guessed. You were just a little boy when we met and was twelve the last time we saw each other. You never found it strange I didn't change all those years?"
Red cheeks and a sheepish smile graced his face, something that took me off guard completely. Kyojuro was energetic and was like a fireball. He never gets shy or sheepish! "I guess I didn't think about it that way. I was just excited to grow up and, well, be a man in your eyes. I did say I wanted to marry you when I grow up, Y/N-chan."
I wasn't drinking anything yet I choked at what he said and started coughing. I have no idea what he was talking about. A still flushing Kyojuro started rubbing my back, helping me with my sudden coughing fit. "You don't remember? I guess only Nobu heard. It's why he was always teasing me back then. Speaking of Nobu, I can't believe he's married and is a father now."
Thankful for his sudden change of subject, I started nodding enthusiastically. "I never imagined Nobu getting married so early as well, but then he met Kagura-san. You wouldn't believe how mature he would act around her as if he wasn't just whining about something." A nostalgic smile appeared on Kyojuro's face – probably thinking about his time with Nobu. "Nobu did mature… but would act bratty every now and then still. When his daughter was born, he was just so… oh, you just know he'd give the world to his baby girl! He wouldn't stop crying that day."
"Tasty! This is delicious!" Our chat felt like it went for hours, and was only stopped when a food cart rolled around selling bento sets. Kyojuro was probably on his eleventh when a small group approached us.
"That guy's the flame hashira?"
"Yup."
"Isn't he just a glutton?"
I turned to look at the newcomers and found demon slayers. The one with either a scar or birthmark was about to speak to Kyojuro – who was still enjoying his meal – when he suddenly stopped and looked at me. The yellow-haired one with him started shaking a little and whispered to him… a whisper that was loud enough for me to hear.
"Tanjirou… isn't that a demon? Why is a demon with a hashira?"
The demon slayer called Tanjirou looked at me as if he knew me…
"Y/N-chan?" Okay, that confirmed that he does know me. I wasn't the only one surprised. Kyojuro was the first one to ask the question. "You know her?"
A look of confusion washed over Tanjirou's face, and now that I had more time to look him over, I found something that was familiar. "Those earrings?" The Hanafuda card earrings that I've seen in my visions and that time I finally saw the blue spider lily – which was useless as it was crushed by a young boy… "Ah! Tanjirou! The boy hanging on a cliff. Your sister… Nezuko-chan was it?" If I remember correctly, they had more brothers and a sister.
A small smile that was more sad than happy was on Tanjirou's face by then. He motioned to the wooden box that was on his back. "His sister, Nezuko, was the other demon at the hashira meeting."
Tanjirou then took the seat across us, his companions taking the one across the aisle, and told me what happened to his family. If I didn't already think of Kibutsuji Muzan as a monster before, Tanjirou's tale just solidified it more. He killed Tanjirou's mother and siblings. Nezuko survived, only that she was also a demon now. My hunch is that Kibutsuji tried to turn all of them into demons, but only Nezuko survived transforming into one. So, those times Kibutsuji would leave all night he must be doing… must be making more demons and killing more people in the process. Despicable.
Then he addressed the elephant in the room, or train rather. "But Y/N-chan… You're a demon? You smell the same as I remember… you were already a demon back then when you saved me?" More questions were asked, mainly Kyojuro asking what happened. After we told him the story, I got my chance to ask about Nezuko – mainly how they're dealing with her becoming a demon.
I could not believe it, Nezuko slept for two years straight. It was as if she was trying to regain her strength through it than eating. Tanjirou inquired about my experiences – may be looking for advice on how to help his sister. "The first few years, it was like a fog was over my mind. Time wasn't something I noticed. It felt like weeks, but it was actually eight years. Then I couldn't remember anything about my life before… when I was still human. I couldn't remember my family's faces, my real name. Meeting one of my brothers didn't instantly jog my memory."
"I didn't know that." Kyojuro added, both of them waiting for me to continue. "As for wanting to eat humans… It's always there. But I've learned to just ignore it. It wasn't always easy, and I almost lost control once. I probably would have eaten that demon slayer if my friend didn't stop me. That was also the first time I was able to use my blood demon art"
"Whoa. Your friend was able to stop you?" Of course, they'd wonder about that. "Yes… he's an upper moon." I told them more – about how Kibutsuji killed my older brother, about how I never really leave home… my whole life.
"Anyway, what brings you here." Kyojuro asked Tanjirou, and so he told us how he fought lower-rank five and used a dance he learned from his father. Now, this conversation about breathing styles and Dance of the Fire God was all going over my head. I really don't get it. I think Kuwajima-san tried explaining it to me at one point, but that was a very long time ago, and even back then I didn't really try much to understand it.
At one point, Kyojuro asked Tanjirou to be his Tsuguko. Turns out, even the color of their swords has meanings.
"So, we're not going to a place with demons, but one's gonna show up here?" The blond demon slayer – Zenitsu-san – looked so scared and was crying right away. Their other companion, Inosuke-san, looked at me – I think it was at me as I can't really see his eyes due to the boar head he was wearing – and asked them if I was the demon they had to kill.
Our discussion was cut short when the conductor started checking everyone's tickets. "What's wrong, Tanjirou-kun?" Shaking his head, "I smell something bad." I think something else happened but the view suddenly changed – I was no longer on the train.
"Yukiko, come on! It's Yusuke's turn, let's go hide."
"Onii-chan? Yuichii-nii…" I couldn't stop the giggles, and Yori who tackled me from behind had to stop me. "Shhh! Nee-chan, Yusuke would find us right away!" I quietly nodded, smiling so hard my cheeks started to hurt. I have a secret hiding place where Yusuke just can't find me. Huh?
"Move over, Yuki." Yuiichi-nii said, pushing me further into my hiding place. Why does it feel like this? It feels painful. I should be happy. I love playing with my brothers! Then why did it feel very wrong?
"Yori-nii! Yukiko-nee! Yuichii-nii, where are you!" A small laugh escaped me, and Yuichii-nii looked like he wanted to complain about the noise I made. Instead, he shook his head and smiled. Soon, Yusuke's voice sounded as if he was walking farther from us.
"I don't think he'd be able to hear us, onii-chan." Why does it feel like I haven't seen him in a very long time? "Yuichii-nii, I missed you so much." I said suddenly. My brother looked on to me in surprise. "Why are you crying?" Big, fat tears were flowing freely from my eyes and I didn't even know why. It's not like I have an answer, but before I even had the chance to think the smell of smoke took over all of my senses. Then a bright, white flash.
I was on a train, only it wasn't right. It was destroyed and, on its side, and I can see a man with hair that looks like flames kneeling outside. He was bloody and injuries littered his body and an arm was protruding from his chest – what?
"Aniki!"
"Aniki!"
I walked closer and the man turned his bloodied face to me… "Kyo-kun!"
The scent of a demon was overwhelming once I woke up. I was still on my seat in the train, sitting beside Kyojuro who was asleep. A girl with a bamboo muzzle was looking right at me – "Nezuko-chan?" She nodded, faint sounds coming from her that seemed to be confirming that she is in fact Tanjirou's sister.
"Nezuko! Protect the others who're asleep!" It was Tanjirou's voice that came from outside, Nezuko went into action right away. The thick scent of a demon was around us. And it was heavy with Kibutsuji's scent. This one probably had a lot of his blood.
I did not think it possible, but it seemed like the demon somehow fused with the train. I leaped to my feet, eager to help Nezuko out and Inosuke who was awake as well. With a final glance at Kyojuro, I went to work.
I went to the next car on the train, yet I knew the moment Kyojuro woke up.
"If there's a hole, I wanna go into it!" was what I heard clearly, and I have no idea what it was about. "Ahh!" It was in a flash, Kyojuro moving towards the front of the train. And in a blink, he was suddenly in front of me.
"Y/N-chan! You go and help Kamado and Boar Head Boy in protecting the front three cars and going after the demon. "Okay." It was all I managed to say before he was blasting off again.
I thought I was fast, but the train moving was making me feel a little dizzy and wobbly. I can't be a burden… I must help them! I hurried to the front of the train, running into Tanjirou at one of the cars up front. "Y/N-chan! Inosuke knows his weak-spot!"
"Ugh!" The engine room was disgusting as it has this meaty demon flesh at the walls that were sprouting arms! Arms! Inosuke was slashing away at it, and Tanjirou too once we got close enough. My nails were razor-sharp and were all I needed to help clear the arms out. We need to find the neck, and they need to use their swords to cut it.
"Hyah!" Frost wrapped around the stumps of flesh – I had to make sure it stays clear for the demon slayers. Tanjirou stopped suddenly and began saying how the demon's neck was right below us. Inosuke went for the floor, and what I saw was just something out of a nightmare.
"Is that bone?!"
"The bone of his neck!" Tanjirou nodded, as he raised his sword in preparation to cut it and end this at once. But of course, it can't be that easy. More of the demon's flesh regenerated and covered where the neck bone was.
"Inosuke! Let's perform a combo attack and match our breaths together!"
"Tanjirou-kun, I can freeze the flesh around the bone and stop it from regenerating!"
"Yes! One of us will slice the flesh up, you freeze the flesh around and the other will cut the bone down!"
"I see! Good idea, I'll give you some praise! You too, demon girl!"
Suddenly, dozens of eyes sprouted from the demon's flesh around us. "It's his blood demon -"
"Yukiko, here." Yuichii-nii said, handing me a peach that looked so delicious. One bite was all it took to confirm it. "That is the best peach I've ever had. Ugh, it feels so long since we last had peaches, oni-chan!" He laughed at me, ruffling my head a bit. We were sitting outside, by the sakura tree near the bridge. Yusuke and Yori were running around, but that was it. I mean, there was no one else but us four.
I looked around, seeing that the shops were open but there were no people. "What are you looking for, Yuki-chii?" A pout crept to my face. "Ah, I told you not to call me that… it's childish." I sure am brave to complain about that when I'm sure pouting and whining is more childish than that.
"Sorry." Yuichii-nii said, smiling and looking like he wasn't sorry at all. I looked around again, at Yori and Yusuke's smiling faces. Ah, they look so young! And… this feels so wrong. Tanjirou!
"Y/N-chan!" I woke up to Inosuke slicing at the floor again. I rushed to freeze the flesh around, determined to stop it from regenerating as Tanjirou went in for the kill.
"Ah!" It was as if the train came to life and started writhing! Maybe it was alive, and it was writhing as it was about to die since Tanjirou sliced its neck.
"We cut his neck and made him writhe in pain! Terrific!" Inosuke said like he's having the time of his life. As for me, I felt dizzier and I wanted to throw up. Tanjirou's hand flew to my arm, firmly holding me despite not looking so good himself.
"You're bleeding!" The dark outfit he had on made it hard to spot right away, the metallic scent was easy enough to notice. "You're hurt!" Even Inosuke noticed and was about to look Tanjirou over when he told us to protect the passengers. Then he was thrown off the train.
"Are you okay, Santarou?" Santarou? "Keep it together! You saved me when I was tangled up in demon flesh, now it's my turn!" Ignoring how Inosuke called Tanjirou Santarou, I knelt and looked over his injury. "That looks bad. We have to stop the bleeding."
But Tanjirou asked us to help the passengers instead. Even the man that stabbed him. "He's not gonna die like this, demon girl. Now come on, my underling asked me to save them, so let's go!" Right. Of course, Tanjirou is a demon slayer. But surely injuries like this is still bad… but the people still inside the train need our help more.
We were trying to pull people off the train when I felt a rumble. I wanted to turn back – to see what was going on with Tanjirou but Inosuke won't have it. He actually called me Minion 4 and ordering me around. It felt like Nobu was with me.
Voices? Kyojuro? His voice sure does travel. The grunts and whimpers around me were making it difficult, but I think I heard him talking about how growing old and dying was the beauty of the fleeting creature called a human being. Was he having a philosophical discussion with Tanjirou? Now really isn't the time for it, is it?
Then I felt it… I actually felt it! Another demon was using their blood demon art, and this one's a lot stronger than the one we fought earlier! "Inosuke-san! Do you feel that, too?" Making sure no one was left inside the train, we both rushed towards the fight.
I felt my heart stop at the sight… "Akaza-san?"
