Arc 2-The Oversoul
With Emperor Varis slain and Garlemald slowly getting consumed by chaos, a new threat emerges for the Eorzean Alliance. Gaius and Estinien return with the grave tidings and knowledge of the weapons the Empire plans to utilize in the coming battle. However, this time there will be no hero to stop the destructive machine of Ultima.
...
"Nidhogg, show them your fury!"
Those were the words said by the azure dragoon before unleashing his power upon the machine standing in his way. Its strength was impressive for something seemingly unfinished. Nevertheless, the elezen charged into the battle once the fury filled him, unleashing a wave of destruction that penetrated the weapon's shields. Leaving naught but ruin in his wake, a picture very familiar, yet he hardly minded it here. The lone, horrified man tied to the weapon let out a horrifying screech before perishing altogether and freeing the way for Estinien. As the dragoon stepped on the metal floor beneath him, he looked at the ruined weapon behind. Smoke rose, and rare sparks glittered over its broken shell, and just a few moments ago, this machine proved a challenge for Estinien…Or perhaps he simply grew tired after such an eventful mission.
The next grand hall remained unguarded, to Estinien's surprise. He was getting closer to leaving the palace through one of the emergency exits he and Gaius used for entering. The loud ring of an alarm still worried Estinien. He was expecting the place to go on lockdown soon after…It probably would have, were the command to be given. Zenos did not care for it. Even as they desperately tried to fight the madman, uniting Gaius's prowess and Estinien's strength, there was nothing but a sardonic smile on his face. He would not even give chase…Many thoughts crossed Estinien's mind, primarily those of the Empire's future. With such a "leader" at their helm, nothing but chaos will await them.
The rest of the Espace proved largely uneventful; apart from a few more encounters with the guards, Estinien's mind envisioned the moment when he left the palace and finally disappeared into the night. Chaos did not have time to spread to the streets just yet. These might have been the last moments of peace and serenity for Garlemald.
Beyond the walls of the imperial capital and amidst the snowy tundra, Estinien was reunited with the former legate, who took an alternative route. He seemed worn out yet still full of fiery passion. Seeing Emperor Varis get slain before his eyes infuriated Gaius; that was obvious. Was it because he still held out some loyalty to the Empire or simply due to his respect for Varis as a man? No matter, all that was far in the past.
"Here you are." - Gaius said with slight relief. "I was expecting us to diverge paths after the ensuing chaos, but it seems fortune is on our side today."
"Aye, it could have gone much worse. I assume getting out there was not a problem for you?" - Estinied wondered if Gaius encountered anything as notable as the weapon in the hall.
"It has gone smoother than expected. Knowing these halls certainly helped. Severa and Valdeaulin had to leave before us to not get detected; they should be far beyond imperial reach now." - Gaius looked at the imperial city they left behind. Estinien clearly read sorrow and pain in Shadowhunter's eyes. "Zenos yea Galvus, back from the dead and eager to annihilate everything his family has built…" - He clenched his fist, realizing that the Empire he knew was gone forever. "Thought I assume with what we know of the ascian involvement, that has always been the intent…But enough about that, how was your path out of the palace?" - Gaius wondered, immediately having Estinien think back to his encounter.
"I fought a machine of some sorts, not a pleasant sight."
"A machine?"
"Not the ones we fought before, something stronger. A four-legged monstrosity reminiscent of a beast, it had a pilot, if you could even call him that…More akin to a prisoner this thing was feeding upon."
"And its arsenal?"
"Rockets, magitek turrets, fiery spells, it was well equipped." - As Estinien told Gaius about this, he could see the legate become visibly distraught. "I destroyed it, have no worries."
"The Empire would not have stopped there…But how?" - Gaius looked down at the snow, consumed by his thought, before composing himself and turning to Estinien. "Your description is far too reminiscent of a weapon I am very familiar with, and it does not inspire hope. Perhaps…No, this is not a place to talk about this." - Gaius shook his head. "I will be heading south once I reunite with my companions, and what of you?"
"The reason I am here is one rather nosy woman who really needed my services…Now I see that it was for a good reason. I'll need to consort with them, and we'll see what comes next."
"Then our paths divulge here." - Gaius noted. "I have to thank you, ser Estinien, it has been an honor…And thank you for not killing Severa straight away." - Was that sarcasm Estinien heard in his voice?
"I am not the one to kill indiscriminately…Well, usually. But likewise, I appreciate the help." - After those words, Legatus and Azure Dragoon shook their hands, and it was time to go on their way.
…
The journey from camp Dragonhead to Mor Dhona has not been eventful. Estinien has been incredibly relieved to return to places he could call home. After journeying the snowy wastes, the dragoon could finally see the famed headquarters of the scions in person. The Revenant's toll did not seem special were it not for its location. That a relatively prosperous town could be formed amidst the Crystal wreckage of this land has undoubtedly been impressive. Estinien encountered one of the scions on his path, Riol, who was the first one he shared the news with. He was a man of action, like Estinien himself, and it did not take him long to set out and warn Alliance leaders of what had transpired in Garlemald.
Once he entered the "Rising Stones" themselves, Estinien immediately felt relief around him. In the small halls filled with young recruits who wished to pledge allegiance to defend this land, their laughs and discussions rang in Estinien's ears, reminding him of the careless youth he wished he could have…But this was so relieving. It was clear to the dragoon why scions chose this place as their headquarters. Each corner felt like home despite this being Estinien's first visit.
"Ser Estinien!" - A cheerful voice rang from behind. As the dragoon glanced behind him, he saw a hopeful lalafell quickly rushing towards him. "Thank the twelve you are back; we were worried."
"I bet…" - Estinien said to Tataru with a grudging tone, thinking back to how he ended up being on this assignment. "There is much to talk about, and I assume mistress Baldesion would hear of it."
"It's not…I'm not so sure about Krile. I wouldn't want to disturb her." - Tataru spoke quietly and with sadness.
"Disturb from what?"
"Over the last few days, something happened to her, and I still don't understand…She barely talks, just meditates in that room and doesn't want to explain anything to me or anyone else." - Tataru was just as oblivious as Estinien was.
"Still, it is too important for her to miss. Lead me to her, and I'll see whether she wishes to talk." - The grave seriousness in Estinien's voice seemed convincing enough for Tataru. The woman nodded and walked towards the looked room deeper into the complex. Estinien followed; he did not pay much attention to news about Krile. Whatever her distraction was, the news about the Empire has been the priority now. Scions would have to act, as would the city-state leaders.
When the doors opened, the reason for Krile remaining here became crystal clear to Estinien. Even the dragoon was distraught by what he saw, barely holding himself from recoiling in horror.
"By the Fury…". - He said as he saw the bodies of scions lying on beds, motionless and static. Their eyes were closed. It seemed like all of them had gone into a slumber…Perhaps eternal slumber. Estinien knew of what happened to them, but his fears were quickly overtaken by the mission he took upon. Now the realization hit him.
Krile tended to the scions; she stood near Y'shtola, touching her motionless body, getting closer as if listening to something. Krile had an echo and was no novice in detecting aethereal traces…What did she see?
Estinien walked in complete silence, his heavy boots colliding with the stone floor and the sound echoing in his ears. The dragoon looked at Alphinaud, the young lord he traveled with in Dravania, together with whom they had stopped the Dragonsong war, who saved him from certain death even when Estinien lost hope…All liveliness that he once had was stripped away from him, leaving only a pale husk before Estinien. The dragoon gently touched young elezen's hand, and the chills rushed down his spine. So cold that Estinien was immediately reminded of Garlemald's icy winds.
"Krile…We have a visitor." - Tataru said meekly for the scion to finally notice Estinien. Krile looked around and gazed into his eyes. But her own expression was…Non-existent. Estinien was shocked by the sheer emptiness in her glass eyes and her tired face that hid agony, all coming from a woman dragoon could remember as full of energy and wit. Estinien wasn't sure whether he could read her emotions. He also wasn't sure whether he wanted to read them at all.
"Ah, ser Estinien…Welcome back." - She said in a weak, almost extinguished voice. Estinien was about to ask her directly, but if she would not reveal what happened to Tataru, he had no chance.
"I bring tidings from Garlemald." - Estinien spoke, getting undivided attention from Tataru and a fleeting interest from Krile.
"Don't keep us waiting; what happened?" - Tataru said with interest.
"I ran into an old Legatus of the 14th, Gaius Baelsar, or the Shadowhunter, as he now prefers." - Estinien began his tale.
"I heard that he was alive, but to encounter him in person…I hope this did not spark another conflict."
"Not to worry, our goals are aligned. Gaius and his companions helped me, after which he wanted to see Emperor Varis himself…I gather he had questions to ask after Varis's revelations."
"How did it go?" - Krile said faintly, pretending to focus.
"I expected to find an ascian there, but what we saw defied all logic…Zenos yae Galvus has returned and reclaimed his body. After which, he slaughtered his father without a shred of remorse."
"But didn't he…How is that possible? Surely Zenos is no ascian to perform such tricks!" - Tataru wondered, trying to piece it all together.
"The resonant…I didn't imagine them to go that far." - Krile spoke as she looked down at the floor.
"Neither did I. We tried to battle him, but to no avail. It seems this "rebirth" has only made him stronger. Gaius and I had to escape swiftly before the news of Varis's death spread through the capital. You can figure out the rest." - Estinien said with a gravelly tone.
"Zenos is not the one to preserve stability…I don't think he cares for the Empire at all." - Krile noted.
"There is no doubt about that. Judging by his words, he only cares about a rematch with Edwin." - After saying the name, Estinien saw Krile visibly tense up. A wild emotion appeared on her face, almost as if she was about to utterly break down. The dragoon felt awkward and helpless; slaughtering dragons and other beasts were so much simpler than trying and figure out others' emotional state. Nevertheless, Krile managed to compose herself, and Estinien continued. "Now the civil war is inevitable. I wonder what news will Alliance spies from Garlemald bring. They should stay careful."
"That's…A lot." - Tataru spoke with uncertainty. "And what of Gaius? Did he return as well?"
"He mentioned going south and certainly had a course of action in mind…I would not worry; he is no longer our enemy, that I can assure you of." - Estinien concluded, followed by Krile's immediate yet faint response.
"Is that all, ser Estinien?"
"Well, yes."
"Thank you for going on this mission. It meant a lot to us…But now I would appreciate it if you and Tataru leave alone for a while." - Estinien could notice some gratitude in her voice, but it had been carefully masked by pain and uncertainty.
"I don't understand…"
"Please, not now." - Tataru intervened. "We'll give you some time, Krile." - After those words, she rushed to the exit, and Estinien had no choice but to follow. He threw one last glance at the bodies left behind…Oh, Alphinaud, still reminding Estinien of a brother he once had. To see his passion, hopes and dreams have been invigorating for Estinien…He prayed that they were not extinguished yet.
"I suppose I shouldn't ask questions." - He looked at Tataru, who nodded in response.
"I'm sorry if the welcome seems cold. I don't know any more than you do. I guess time will be of the essence. We should focus on more important matters."
"Agreed. With the civil war imminent and Zenos at its helm, chaos might not be contained by only Garlemald." - The dragoon noted. "Do you need my lance anywhere else? I would be happy to provide."
"In some time, perhaps, but we need to hear from Alliance leaders and spies first. Considering how low the scions have gone on numbers, there isn't much we can do ourselves." - Tataru spoke with uncertainty but eventually looked up at Estinien and smiled. "Speaking of which, you would have made a great scion." - She said, putting the dragoon into an awkward spot.
"Thank you for the compliment, Tataru, but I'd rather remain on my own for now."
"Just pointing it out, nothing more. Where will you be going next?" - Tataru wondered, and Estinien realized that he did not have a definitive answer yet.
"Well…While the time allows, I suppose I'll visit some old friends. But I don't doubt that it will not be long before the battle calls again."
And whenever it does, the Azure Dragoon will be ready.
…
The journey to Eorzea was long and perilous, but it was necessary.
Perhaps it would pale to what would happen once Gaius and his companions actually set foot on Ala Mhigan soil; the Black Wolf was ready for anything. He knew that his actions were unreconcilable with the actions of the Alliance, and so he would not waste energy on trying to "redeem" himself in their eyes or make them see his perspective. The past was in the past, and Gaius did not seek redemption. The sole reason he would extend his hand to Alliance was what he and Estinien saw in the palace, especially the Warmachine.
If his prediction was true and the Empire had created another Ultima Weapon, then the consequences could be catastrophic. Gaius still thought back to the day of his failure and disgrace in Praetorium, as the power he believed to control was turned against him, resulting in countless deaths. No one could be allowed to repeat such a mistake.
Stepping on the sandy vales in the lochs…It felt strange, unnatural almost. When last he walked those roads, he was a conqueror clad in imperial armor with an entire Legion behind his back. He watched the entire kingdom kneel before him and give him their everything. Now, the Legatus had nothing. His only army are two companions, one of which has sworn to kill him, and a hostile kingdom ahead.
"Gyr Abania…I heard much about it before but never had a chance to visit." - Valdeaulin uttered as the trio felt a warm wind dancing on their skins, bringing lone grains of sand with it.
"I remember serving here…There was an imperial outpost nearby. I wonder what happened with it now." - Severa looked over the desert. Valdeaulin continued
"Heard they did much to harm Gridania before your conquest, Gaius. It was anything but a peaceful relationship." - The elezen noted.
"Times change, and so do perceptions. From what I found out about the Empire recently has left no other way." - Gaius said with grief.
"Yes, you're right…But don't think changed perceptions will do anything to the promise I gave."
"Do not worry; I haven't forgotten, and I am not the one to run from my fate. But not before our work has been done." - Gaius said seriously. Severa had to stand between the two.
"We can't bicker over this now, come on." - She noted, causing the elezen to back down. At times he grew eager to claim his revenge, but they all knew the task that loomed ahead of them. "Gaius, what's our plan? Some in Ala Mhigo might recognize you even without the armor."
"We will be careful…What we need is an audience with general Aldynn. I believe he will understand our plight, especially with Ala Mhigo being so close to the front at Ghimlyt." - The Legatus nodded.
For a few more moments, the trio continued to walk, but soon they noticed two soldiers traversing the desert. Gaius gestured to his companions to be careful as they approached them. Perhaps those two might help them get into the city. Gaius recognized those two as Ala Mhigan; they were strong Highlander hyurs, not the ones you would wish to face in battle. One of them was a dark-skinned man in heavy armor and a white war paint on his face. Beside him was a lighter-skinned woman with short red hair, similar paint a collar around her neck…Gaius could overhear the two talking.
"They won't change their opinion outright, but the first steps are always important." - The man spoke.
"I don't care about opinions, not anymore. I told you why I chose to help and that I can do without…This." - The woman responded bitterly.
"I understand, but it's not long before…"
"Wait, someone is coming."
The woman noticed Gaius and his brethren, causing her to immediately turn around towards them, followed by her companion. They stared at each other with slight unease as Gaius tried to discern their motivations and what kind of action he could expect. The dark-skinned man noticed the third eye on Gaius, and his expression immediately changed to suspicion and familiarity. Did he recognize Gaius and simply couldn't believe his eyes? That was possible. It wasn't likely that news of his survival had spread too far.
"You are garlean, are you not? Forgive us for the caution, but I would like you to state your business here." - He said confidently.
"And are we to give away our identities to the soldiers that refuse to do so themselves? Suffice to say that we mean you no harm." - Gaius responded with no worry. He did not wish to spark conflict, but giving in so quickly might play against them. Severa and Valdeaulin remained silent and ready to take up arms at any moment. Neither of them was good at negotiating, and so this task was left to the Black Wolf.
"You are right. I won't deny it. I am Arenvald Lentinus of the scions, and this is Fordola Lupis, my comrade in arms." - He introduced their pair, keeping on his suspicion and expecting Gaius to respond in kind. But before he could, Fordola looked into his eyes with pure shock. She froze in disbelief as she looked over at the man. She seemed to recognize him. And the longer Gaius would look at this woman, the more familiar she would become to him.
"Seven hells take…No, that's impossible!" - She said with anger, swiftly taking her weapon out almost on reflex. Gaius's companions did the same in response while Arenvald tried to de-escalate the situation.
"Stop, there is no need for violence!" - He shouted and looked at his partner. "Fordola, do you know him?"
"You bet I do. I heard the rumors of the Black Wolf being alive, but to see him in the flesh once again…" - She tried to contain her anger as Arenvald turned towards Gaius, surprised and inquisitive.
"Is this true?"
"Aye." - The man nodded. "I am Gaius Baelsar, former imperial Legatus and the viceroy of Ala Mhigo. These are my companions, Severa and Valdeaulin, and rest assured, we have not come here for conflict." - He said calmly.
"You cannot just come here and expect no conflict." - Fordola shook her head as she reluctantly put her weapon away.
"I remember you, Fordola Lupis, once "rem."" - They did not meet often, but Gaius always remembered his subordinates, no matter how distant.
"You gave me the "power" and "responsibilities" over my own people…For the approval that would never come!" - She said with spite. "Though I suppose it pales with what your successor did…Imperial legates just can't stay dead, can they?"
"So you know of Zenos's return?"
"Everyone does. That news spread over Alliance like wildfire."
"Then you understand the urgency with which I come here." - Gaius appealed to reason and ordered his companions to pull back their weapons. Arenvald was the next to speak.
"I am sure you understand that a man like you cannot simply "walk" into Ala Mhigo. Even if we were to assume your motives are pure, people would still react negatively." - The scion noted.
"It is not with the people my destination lies, though I imagine they have many quarrels. I wish to speak with general Aldynn about something Estinien, and I uncovered while in the Garlean capital. Something that might spell doom for your nation and many others if not contained." - Gaius hoped they would understand and put aside their differences. There would be many questions and grieves to share between him and Fordola, but not before the city is warned.
"And what is that, precisely?" - Arenvald pressed on.
"I assume you know of the ancient relic weapon that was found beneath your soil. From what we discovered, the Empire has found a way to replicate it. The Ultima weapon might rise once again."
…
It did not take long to persuade them. Despite their understandable distrust, Fordola and Arenvald were reasonable people. They escorted Gaius and his brethren to the city and the Alliance war conference hall. To walk through those gates and witness Ala Mhigo once again…Gaius's heart ached at the sight of it. This haunting familiarity pursued him, yet he could not deny that the nation had sprung since the times of imperial occupation.
They walked across the most narrow alleyways to avoid unwanted attention, but even from there, it was clear. The purple banner rose above the stone walls of this city, filling its people with pride. This is a nation that Gaius brought to heel under the guidance of an ascian emperor. He believed that this savage nation that was consumed by civil war could be united and perfected under the garlean banner. Gaius fancied himself a changer of cultures back in the day, someone who brings the garlean light to the uncivilized. At first, his plans seemed successful, but there were many Ala Mhigans who never broke. They grew wilder and angrier, but they never broke. Gaius attempted to maintain order, but it did not take long for the kingdom to break free after he was out of the picture. It would seem the stability he longed for and the freedom Ala Mhigans sought were not compatible, and they were the ones to win in the end.
Now it was a time to forget the past and focus on the devastation future might bring. When they reached the staging room, Gaius would walk there alone. Fordola and Arenvald had a report to deliver, after which they promised to treat his companions like the guests they were. All four of them would eagerly await the results. Gaius wandered through the majestic halls of Ala Mhigan building; its architecture and grace have been impressive, even for a Garlean. When he reached the names room, Gaius noticed a strong dark-skinned man awaiting him there. The raging bull of Ala Mhigo was restored to his former glory. Gaius remembered the times when he was an accomplice to Sultana in a kingdom foreign to him, but now he has returned to his liberated homeland…Gaius noticed that one of his hands was lost. He must have been through many bloody battles recently.
"When Arenvald told me I am to expect the Black Wolf himself, I took it for a half-hearted joke. But I guess the times really have changed." - Raubahn said with a stern tone of distrust.
"It feels like an eternity has passed since you stormed Castrum Meridianum. I can only congratulate you on your growth." - How ironic, Raubahn has risen while Gaius has fallen lower than ever.
"Bah, for me, it feels like it happened yesterday! The sounds of swords and cries of liberation still linger." - Raubahn parred. "I assume the memory is not so bright for you." - The bull noted.
"On the contrary, I have learned much that day; this knowledge guides me still."
"Yes, I'm sure losing all your toys in one day must have had an effect."
"Would you not be above such remarks? I am here on a serious business." - Gaius crossed his hands. Raubahn understood. Perhaps he simply could not help himself when standing before his former worst enemy.
"You are right…All I want you to know is that people do not forget so easily. Neither do eye." - He said, almost as a warning.
"I do not expect them to." - Gaius responded calmly, as this was the reaction he expected.
"Then perhaps we might find common ground still. I heard you have been hunting ascians in recent days, and I believe I can speak from all people of the Alliance when I say that we appreciate it. It does not mean trust, but it might spell a common cause for the days to come." - Raubahn recounted.
"I assume you know about the changes in the Empire."
"I know that the bastard princeling returned, aye. Our spies claim that contenders for the Imperial throne flame you for it, but this was not what we were told. Seeing Zenos, it is not hard to believe that he killed his father himself."
"Zenos's motives are simple, yet his actions are shrouded in mystery. He will not care about assaulting Eorzea, only for his rematch with the warrior of light, and from what I know, Edwin is not here." - Gaius sat on the chair in front of Raubahn.
"Indeed…As much as we worry, if this means Zenos stays in Garlemald for now, there will be at least something good to come out of this mess." - Raubahn changed his disposition to the one filled with an air of worry. "Arenvald also mentioned the Ultima Weapon, and if anyone knows about it, it would be you."
"Estinien has encountered a lesser version of it. Apparently, there was a prototype tested in the palace with a newly developed technology of merging pilot with the machine." - Gaius explained.
"That sounds monstrous, though I'm not surprised if Garleans are willing to test it."
"If this was a prototype…"
"There might be more in development."
"Yes, and those would make it pale in comparison." - Gaius said. "From what I understand, the legions have begun the clash over the capital. Perhaps this project does not belong to the Empire as a whole, but someone is working on it. And we'd better find those who do before it's too late." - Gaius stated with seriousness and anticipation.
"None such machines were discovered by our spies in the capital. If any arise, I would gladly fight on the front lines to bring the beast down!" - The general said with pride.
I do not think you will find the sacrifices worth it."
"Then what is your proposal?" - Raubahn was eager to listen.
"Move beyond the capital. Scour the provinces of Ilsabard to the south. Someone must now. When we identify the level of this threat, then we can act. I'll help the spies and with later sabotage, if so required." - Gaius volunteered to help, yet Raubahn still seemed distrustful.
"You might be at odds with the ascians…But why do you help us? Are we to forget the war you waged, even behind the Emperor's back? What would make you suddenly turn around and become an ally?" - Raubahn posed a question, but it was not hard for Gaius to answer.
"Because for all our differences, my intent has always been conquest and expansion, not devastation. The Empire in its current state would only lead to the latter. And that is something neither of us wants." - Gaius stated; Raubahn couldn't help but nod. He saw the reason in Black Wolf's words. The Shadowhunter extended his hand, and Raubahn shook it. "I assume we can call it peace for now."
"Yes…So be it."
…
The chilling atmosphere of this place never ceased to impress Alfonse…Impress and also frightened.
He has been used to it, of course, though it was not the same without their father by their side. The imperial installation near Terncliff was barely ever quiet. The worn-out workers, many of whom originated as slaves taken by the VIIth Legion. Alfonse tried to avoid seeing them labor on another weapon or armor, knowing that there would be no reward except another project. They were never supposed to see the world's beauty despite the metal walls of this outpost. Their cruel overseers made sure they would never forget. Alfonse believed that it was only temporary and for the greater good…That when Eorzea is conquered and stirred away from their savage ways, everyone will get a chance to become equally enlightened. That was the way XIVth operated, but not so much here…
And this day, they were troubled with grave knees. As Alfonse strolled over the caging corridors with a faint cyclic sound of imperial colossi roaming the area, he desperately tried to make sense of it all. When he heard that their father was alive, their entire family was overjoyed, but questions quickly began to arise…Why didn't he return to the Empire? To them? Alfonse brushed the worrying thoughts aside. He knew Gaius very well, a man of honor who would never let them down…Would he? All this culminated in tidings of the Emperor's assassination coming from Garlemald. This signaled unrest and perhaps even a civil war, yet what truly horrified him was the official story. A renegade Legatus, Gaius van Baelsar teamed up with Estinien Wyrmblod, a freelancer hired by Eorzea, together with whom they infiltrated Garlemald and slain Emperor Varis…How could this be? Gaius could not have switched sides like this; Alfonse desperately wanted to believe it was a misunderstanding.
The machine echoing was tiring Alfonse out, bringing out his most negative thoughts, including fury…He needed to talk to his siblings. This was the only way to maintain his fears and worries. However, before Alfonse moved out, there was something…Unusual. He saw someone on the opposite side of the corridor, slowly strolling down the silver floor. The au ra squinted his eyes to make sure, and his suspicions were confirmed. It was a stranger wearing pale white robes covering his entire body. He would not show his face, but it seemed like he was searching for something. Either way, this did not comply with any kind of dress code, be it the slaves' tunics, imperial armor, or the pilot garments which Alfonse wore.
"Hey, stand still." - Alfonse said in a commanding tone, causing the stranger to notice him. "Turn around and show yourself." - He said, but the robed person would not obey. Instead, he charged towards the wall's corner, in an instant crossing to another corridor. Alfonse ran after him, realizing that this might be a trespasser or a spy, albeit not a very good one.
As he entered the adjacent corridor, Alfonse was prepared to block the silhouette's way, only to realize that the one standing before him was not this mysterious stranger but an au ra with large horns, dark skin, and similar red clothes of a pilot covering her body, perfect match with her hair. The girl was clearly surprised to see him and recoiled at first.
"What…Don't just jump out like that!" - She realized that it was her adopted brother who helped her to self-realize and become as assured and confident as she could be. Alfonse was confused, and this shock was still shown on his face. Milisandia noticed. "I thought you were with others…What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost." - He might as well have.
"I saw a figure in white robes in that hall, tried to stop it, and saw it rush right here. You should've seen it." - Alfonse tried to piece the picture together, only to confuse his sister even more.
"I wasn't serious about ghosts, you know…I haven't seen anyone."
"But there definitely was someone, I know! They couldn't have just disappeared into thin air…" - Alfonse started to doubt his own perception. After all, the recent days have given them much to stress about with the news of ensuing chaos, their father's betrayal, and constant work on the Ultima project. "I think I did…" - Alfonse spoke with doubt as Milisandia looked at him with empathy.
"I know it's hard on all of us, especially on you, but if you're sure you've seen…"
"No, forget it. I should not be troubling you with these foolish visions." - Alfonse shook his head with shame, only to have Milisandia hug him gently.
"Don't say that, big brother. You know how much you mean to me, to all of us." - She spoke with the warmth which caused Alfonse to melt inside and let go of his fears, at least temporarily. Even the hooded figure has been all but forgotten.
"Were you heading somewhere? I don't want to keep you for long." - Alfonse spoke with concern, only for Milisandia to smile and let go of their embrace.
"I was hoping to visit you and others, actually. The factory work can be very tiring, you know."
"I was thinking the exact same thing." - The brother responded in kind. "Should we go, then? I reckon the others are in our dormitory." - Alfonse said, to which Milisandia happily nodded, and soon they were off. It wasn't a long way, and this place was the only one where the five orphans could get some respite and privacy.
"Why do you help out the overseers?" - Alfonse asked his sister with curiosity. Occasionally each of them was forced to help, but Milisandia was the only one who did this voluntarily and regularly. The girl shrugged before gazing at Alfonse.
"It helps me to gain favors with our new Legion, don't you think? The overseers hate being on this job, and they appreciate any help.
"I don't believe this will ever change. You've seen everything after our father left, just like me…We'll have to act soon."
"I am well aware, but we can't do much yet…If our new leader sees that we've prepared the best conditions for his arrival, he might be favorable to us for the time being." - Milisandia explained as Alfonse was surprised to hear the last part.
"Lord Valens is coming here?"
"Haven't you heard? He sent a message that due to "unforeseen developments" in the capital, he wished to speak with us personally."
"And here I hoped he would stay away. I'd talk to him alone, if he allows it, no need to subject you all." - Alfonse despised Valens for his sadism and cruelty, but if conversing with him was inevitable, at least he could take the brunt of it.
"I doubt that's possible…And you shouldn't be too hard on yourself, it's probably about our father, and we all should know." - Milisandia tried to calm Alfonse, by the impending dread still crept within. Over the years of service and battles, as well as caring for his family, the big brother grew all the more tired, wondering if this nightmare would ever end.
"What is there to know? Our father couldn't have killed the Emperor. He never would. I would not be surprised if other legates are simply using this accusation as a way to get rid of him in the following civil war." - Alfonse said, trying to not lash out at the injustice.
"We all know, deep inside…That's all that matters."
"The truth won't help us in the coming days."
"We'll see about that."
Soon they entered the familiar dormitory, immediately having the chill and mechanical shadows immediately transform into the warmth and a laugh full of life. They were met with three familiar voices in the middle of an exciting tale.
"…So I decided to use some grenades if he wanted me to be that impressive." - The tall au ra with blue hair proudly recounted to his brother and sister.
"That was dangerous. You could've hurt yourself!" - Allie said with a tone of sisterly scolding; she worried for Rex's safety. They all cared for each other deeply.
"And what did he say?" - Ricon wondered with clear interest.
"Well, after the boom went, he did not say much, but for some reason, those "veterans" aren't questioning my skills anymore. Who knows why." - He responded with sarcasm, followed by a laugh from Allie and Ricon.
"Oh, look, they're back!" - Allie pointed at Milisandia and Alfonse, all five siblings finally reunited.
"I see your time was spent with way more fun than ours." - Alfonse noted with a warm smile as he sat on the bed near his siblings. He wondered how would their life change if they never met each other…Never met Gaius. He might as well have given in to depression.
"Well, I do have a talent for that." - Rex smirked before welcoming the returning duo. "Allie and Ricon can hardly have enough, am I right? Such a story to miss…Where have you been, Alfonse? I know Milisandia loves her power trips, but you usually stuck with us." - He wondered.
"Hey, that's no power trips; I'm helping all of us with that!" - Milisandia crossed her hands with some slight irritation. Alfonse spoke afterward.
"I thought I needed some time alone to…You know, to think. It didn't go well." - He said, only to have Rex's expression darken.
"It's about the news, right?" - He said with sympathy, only to have Alfonse nod.
"About our father and what he is doing now, yes…"
"He wouldn't do something like that; our father has always been the most loyal to both empire and us!" - Allie exclaimed in utter disbelief. She was the one who had no doubts whatsoever…Even after all they had been through, she remained hopeful and positive, always bright if up her siblings' days.
"Allie's right. That's not our father at all. I don't know what kind of bastard decided to frame him, but if I ever lay my hands on them…" - Rex spoke with anger but was interrupted. Alfonse and others heard slow steps behind their door…Very loud steps, almost as if armor of pure metal descended to the ground. Very few in the Empire were allowed to have protection like this.
"No, that's too early…" - Milisandia whispered in fear as the door opened.
Before the siblings stood a tall garlean man clad in purple armor of a Legatus. His head was covered with a horned helmet with a blue visor.
"Here you are." - The man spoke calmly with a slight tone of anticipation and glee. Alfonse felt the terror creeping up inside, but he could not give in. He had to stay brave.
"Welcome, Lord Valens." - Milisandia was the first to speak, trying to replicate honor and appreciation when she had none.
"Why so afraid?" - Valens asked as he took his helmet off and carelessly threw it on the nearby bed. He liked his face to be seen. This furious, hateful, and cruel gaze circles around the siblings like a wild animal picking its prey. Valens sat on the spare bed as if it was his and yawned before looking back at the siblings with his mouth forming a light smirk. He saw their emotions very well. "I assume you know that I was to visit?"
"Yes, sort of…" - Ricon said meekly.
"Is this about our father?" - Rex went straight to the point; he despised those long dreadful pauses.
"No, but this can be discussed too. As you know, in a horrific assassination in Garlemald, Gaius van Baelsar proved once and for all that he is a degenerate who betrayed all we stood for. He is to be treated as an enemy, and any attempts to conspire with him will receive…Some consequences." - He looked at Alfonse, who remained the bravest. Perhaps this was what entertained Valens so much, to see how much it takes to break him. "Am I clear?" - He said menacingly after another pause, staring into Alfonse's resilient eyes.
"Yes, lord Valens." - He replied quietly and emotionlessly.
"You would need more enthusiasm than that. After all, there is no duty more honorable than destroying traitors to the Empire."
"With all due respect…". - Alfonse forced himself to speak up, seeing Valens's brimming excitement as he did. "Gaius would not murder the Emperor like this. We knew him, we knew what he believed in, that's just…"
Valens stood up and slapped Alfonse with his metal glove. The au ra couldn't hold his balance and fell to the floor, feeling his cheek burning from agony.
"Mind your tongue, or I will cut it out." - Valens said with malicious glee. Rex clenched his fist, trying to compose himself; others were too fearful of responding. "Let's not waste any more time, then. I have come to summon you for duty, my pilots." - Valens began.
"What duty?" - Allie wondered.
"I have received some intel claiming that Eorzea is weakened, that it will soon face a crisis from the inside due to some…Key losses. This is our time to attack and crush their pathetic military." - He said with hatred towards the Alliance.
"Did the order come from the capital?" - Milisandia asked, trying not to toe any lines. "I thought a civil war would ensue…"
"Oh, it has already, but that's of little relevance. You are in the VIIth, and the only one you answer to is me, do not concern yourself with the rest."
"But why now, when the Empire is fractured?" - Alfonse stood up, almost prompting Valens to hit him again, but the malicious man held himself back and smiled.
"We will succeed where Gaius, Nael, and even Solus himself failed. That's all you need to know. And speaking of our first strike…While their front in Ghimlyt is worn out, it is time to put our project to the test."
"You want us to pilot the weapons." - Rex said coldly, realizing Valens's motives.
"Not all at the same; one should be more than enough to destroy the military base behind the operation on the front. You know their…Capabilities." - Valens spoke with pleasure, hinting at the horrific function of the oversoul. Alfonse wasn't surprised if the Legatus wanted to see it as an action at the cost of their lives. "When preparations are finished, we will launch the Ruby Weapon." - He looked at Milisandia. "And you will be its pilot."
"Me? It's an honor…Of course…But why me?" - The girl responded in a semi-fearful voice.
"I have received reports of your aid around the installation here; it seems to me like you are the most eager of all. And that's why I grant this honor to you…Which you would not refuse, would you?"
Milisandia remained silent as her siblings looked at her with concern, but everyone in the room knew full well that this wasn't a choice.
"I would not."
"Splendid! Your final stages of training begin tomorrow, after which I expect results." - Valens stood up, putting his helmet back on. He marched towards the door slowly, making most of his presence. Before he left, the man looked back at the au ras.
"Serve well, and you will be rewarded. Fail…And you know how it goes." - He said before locking the door, leaving the siblings in utter and chilling silence.
