Hermione Granger, , born in England, the daughter of a Black Jamaican father and a Scottish mother, had been through her fair share of discrimination. Whether it had been her schoolmates mocking her parent's heavy accents, or being hovered over in the library and at bookstores, she had experienced it all. Or so she thought until Professor Mcgonagall, the stern woman who had revealed to the Grangers the presence of an entire magical world, had informed of the racial prejudice within the Wizarding World as well.
"Magic runs in the blood", Professor Mcgonagall had explained, "and the so-called "Purebloods claim descent from some of history's most illustrious witches and wizards. Please do know, however, that magical blood, or the lack thereof, is no indication of magical talent. In fact, one of my finest students was a muggle born witch much like yourself.
Hermione felt reassured that her lack of magical forbearers would not impact her ability to perform excellently at her new school, but acknowledged that having grown up in a muggle environment, she must surely be at a disadvantage in understanding the nuances of the magical world. For example, was there a magical Monarch parallel to the Muggle British Royal Family? ("Oh thank heavens no!") Or was the Queen aware of the Wizarding World? ("As I understand it, the muggle Queen is no longer informed on matters regarding the wizarding world but that the Minister of Magic maintains contact with the Muggle Prime Minister") Who were the police and how could she call them? ("They are called Aurors and you will be taught how to properly contact them in your 4th year, now that will be quite enough for now, young lady").
While Professor Mcgonagall took a reprieve from Hermione's onslaught of questions only to be subjected to another wave from her parents, Hermione sat thinking. How could it be possible that she would remain ignorant of the procedure to contact the magical police until at least four years into the future? Anything could happen in the time between! And that was completely UNFAIR! People who were raised with magic would either already know how to do so, or would have no need to know themselves as they would live with an adult with that knowledge.
"But Professor!", Hermione interjected. She shrank back, embarrassed, when she realized she had not only interrupted the adults' conversation but also shouted out her question. "Professor?", she continued in a softer tone, "Shouldn't muggle borns be aware of the proper procedure for calling on all the services Wizarding Britain provides before they even get to school?"
Hermione's parents nodded in agreement. "Forgive Hermione's impertinence, but I must say Professor, I definitely agree with her. It is only right that Hermione be given the ability and knowledge to call upon governmental services. In fact, this has nothing to do with her student life but rather her civic rights. I mean surely the Wizarding World has such a thing, right?"
Professor Mcgonagall, Hermione was sure, had never quite heard muggles be so forceful and direct with their questioning. It was to be expected, Hermione thought, as her father could often be quite stern, but her mother, while generally a lot more laid-back, could still be quite strict when she wanted to.
The question is answered and McGonagall offers to escort Hermione to the ministry so that she can be given a rundown on how Magical government works.
Hermione is first escorted to collect her wand at Ollivanders. There she learns that many Wizarding Families own a veritable stockpile of wands, as they keep the wands of their forefathers as heirlooms. Ollivander explains that some families allow their children to practice utilizing these wands. Hermione, however, is scandalized at the notion that Pureblood families have found a loophole around the Trace, and the restriction against underage Magic, and that she might actually be behind her peers.
Hermione is also escorted to the Ministry where she is given a tour, and taught how to contact and access law enforcement and health services. Once home, Hermione reflects on the disadvantage she is at and vows to not only catch up to her magical peers but to exceed them.
Hermione arrives at Hogwarts and, for the first time in her life, doesn't face ostracization based on her race, rather, it is now her intelligence that is used against her. Hermione attempts to socialize with her roommates but after a rather cutting comment from Lavender Brown on the state of her hair, she makes no further attempts.
Hermione also begins to face challenges outside of her House, as her high marks, assertive personality, and strong opinions put her at odds with the majority of students in her year. As such, Hermione becomes increasingly isolated from others.
After a rather disastrous Charms lesson, Hermione runs to the girl's bathroom crying. She overhears a conversation between Pansy Parkinson and Milicent Bulstrode, in which the two discuss Hermione and her abysmal chances after Hogwarts. Pansy gloats that no matter how brilliant Hermione may be, she will always be plain, and most importantly a mudblood. Pansy and Millicent joke that it's a poorly kept secret that mudbloods don't get very far in the Ministry.
Once Pansy and Millicent leave the stall, Hermione emerges, no longer crying but now determined to prove her worth to Ron, Pansy and the entire Wizarding World.
Thus begins Hermione's fight against the Pureblood Agenda.
After Hermione's time spent in the bathroom, she heads to her common room. The next day, Hermione learns that Hogwarts offers Muggle Studies as an optional course from 3rd year and becomes curious as to what is taught in class. She finds a syllabus for the course and is horrified to discover that the material is not only horribly outdated, but also is full of deeply offensive/condescending positions towards not only Muggle Borns, but muggles as well. Hermione decides to visit the Muggle Studies teacher to make her points, and is surprised to find that she isn't very receptive, nor very knowledgeable.
Hermione questions whether to take the matter further or not, and ultimately decides to bring the matter to Professor Mcgonagall's attention. Professor Mcgonagall, surprisingly, isn't at all shocked by Hermione's report. Though she understands Hermione's concerns, she informs her that no revisions to the syllabus can be made without the explicit approval of both the Headmaster and the Board of Governors. The Professor reveals that a prior petition to update the syllabus had already been presented to the Board, and it had been soundly rejected. The meeting is cut short when Harry and Ron burst into Mcgonagall's office.
Hermione begins to research the Board of Governors and quickly becomes convinced that it's an altogether shady organization. For example, the membership positions are usually hereditary but positions have, often, been purchased or exchanged. Moreover, the positions are all in the hands of purebloods, and mostly men, at that. As Hermione delves into the History of the Board of Governors, she comes to realize that they have played a fundamental role in the contentious state of Wizarding Britain. Hermione learns, through old records of the board meetings, that they have blocked the appointments of many muggleborns aiming to be teachers at Hogwarts, and that they have also refused to update the Muggle Studies syllabus for over 50 years, leaving it extremely outdated.
Hermione pens a letter to the Ministry, detailing the poor standards of the Muggle Studies course, but gets no response. Recognizing that the government is failing her, she submits an article to the Daily Prophet, hoping that it would be published. However, the article that is published takes an extremely biased view of the problem, defending the Board of Governors, and belittling the first-year muggleborn student who would dare to question the quality of Britain's premier magical institution. Hermione is shocked at the obvious bias of the newspaper but realizes that she had been naive to think that the systemic prejudice wouldn't manifest in the country's media as well. Hermione plans to tackle this issue as well, even as she receives hateful stares from upper years thinking she is reaching above her station, Slytherins who resent her "obsession" with muggles, and hate mail from the general public.
As Hermione continues her investigation, she learns that Professor Quirrel was once a Muggle Studies professor and decides to visit him. When Hermione goes in search of the Professor, she finds his office empty. Torn between respecting the Professor's privacy, and her curiosity, Hermione debates whether to enter the office or not. Curiosity having won, Hermione enters the office and discovers that Quirrell has kept a diary full of plans to enter the Forbidden Corridor on the third floor. He has marked down each enchantment utilized in the protection of the treasure hidden there. After reading through the diary, Hermione realizes that the treasure referred to is the infamous Philosopher's Stone.
Hermione takes the diary with her and rushes to show a teacher, but after the staircase shifts while she is on it, she ends up on the third floor. Confident that with the book's guidance she can overcome the challenges, Hermione enters the Forbidden Corridor.
Hermione quickly makes it through the challenges, and arrives at the last room, where she finds Quirrell. She attempts to knock him out but doesn't count on Lord Voldermort being attached to Quirrel's head. In no time at all, Hermione is subdued, and is forced by Lord Voldermort to look into the Mirror of Erised. In the Mirror, Hermione sees herself, and her parents, wandering around Diagon Alley, being received with open arms by Wizarding Society, buying something at Borgin and Burke, and when she puts it in her pocket, Hermione realizes that she has the Philosopher's Stone in her pocket. Hermione explains what she has seen but Voldermort doubts her claims, telling Quirrell to search her. As Quirrell is about to, Hermione is able to free herself of her confinement, using accidental wandless magic. Aware that she is no match for a Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, and the Dark Lord, himself, Hermione performs spells way beyond the first year curriculum. Instead of attacking Quirrell, she instead focuses on fleeing, smashing a hole in the ground, and jumping down to the next level. Hermione is surprised to find that she ends up on the fifth floor but with Quirrell chasing her through the castle, she chalks it up to the magic of the castle. As Hermione runs into a dead end, she is once again subdued by Quirrell. As he prepares to end her life, however, Hermione chooses to smash the windows behind her and dive out the building. As she falls, Hermione knocks out.
When she wakes up later, she finds herself in the Hospital Wing, under the care of Madam Pomfrey. Hermione learns that by destroying the wall, she had woken up just about the entire castle. With the help of the portraits, the Professors were able to locate her and fight off Quirrell. Hermione, however, couldn't be retrieved mid-air in time and had actually dropped from the fifth floor to the castle grounds, magically only breaking a few bones.
Once Madam Pomfrey leaves, Hermione is visited by Ron, Harry and Neville who all demand to know what happened. Hermione explains the story and, although at first Ron is sceptical, Harry believes her and attributes his scar not hurting anymore to the vanquishing of Voldermort. Dumbledore enters the room in the middle of the conversation, and asks Hermione very similar questions.
Harry asks Dumbledore what will happen to the Flamels, and Dumbledore explains that the Flamels had chosen to pass on, and that with the destruction of the stone, Voldermort could no longer utilize that method to revive himself. Unbeknownst to Dumbledore, and the others, the Philosopher's Stone remained in Hermione's back pocket.
With the school year at an end, Hermione, now if not friends, but at least on friendly terms with the Gryffindor Trio: Harry, Neville, and Ron. Moreover, she had found study partners in the likes of Padma Patil, Morag MacDougal, and Anthony Goldstein
Hermione passes the summer between first and second year, attempting to understand the properties of the Philosopher's Stone. In doing so, she becomes greatly interested in the field of alchemy. However, Hermione's interests do not remain strictly academic.
Hermione consults with her parents, and a large body of muggle work on how disenfranchised peoples can achieve social equity. Foremost of these is through economic power. Hermione begins to contemplate transmuting large sums of gold as a means of gaining economic power. However, with the trace very much in effect, Hermione is unable to even test her theories.
Hermione's visit to Diagon Alley with her parents ends poorly when Mr. Weasley and Lucuis Malfoy get into a fistfight. In retaliation, Lucius slips Hermione the Riddle diary, but as she has no need for the diary, having one of her own, she makes no immediate use of it.
Hermione returns to Hogwarts for her second year, where she quickly reacquaints herself with the Library. Defense of the Dark Arts becomes a highlight of Hermione' s time at Hogwarts as she develops a rather large crush on Professor Lockhart. All her female friends, and Justin Finch-Fletchley, are in total agreement with her, but the other boys in class all remark on how stupid the girls are behaving. As the classes go by, Hermione becomes disillusioned as it is clear that Lockhart is not only a terrible teacher, but an idiot, albeit a very handsome one. Hermione overcompensates by increasing her trips to the Library in order to study D.A.D.A. with greater rigour.
Hermione recognizes that despite being a muggleborn herself, she has no other muggleborn friends, and sets about attempting to cultivate friendships with others. In her own house, for example, she begins to speak with Dean and they bond over shared exasperation for Wizarding culture. As Hermione and Dean chat, she realizes that much can be done to improve Wizarding Relations. Thus, with the help of Dean and Harry, as well as Justin Finch-Fletchley, Hermione founds a club. Hermione's club aims to bridge the gap between muggleborns and the Wizarding World by establishing a network that they can rely on. The Club is a surprise hit, and soon draws in a crowd from the majority of Gryffindor, as well as the muggleborns of other Houses. With its success, however, comes increased antagonism from Slytherins, and many purebloods. In fact, the Club even makes the news, where it is painted in a very unflattering light. The newspaper insinuates that Muggleborns are attempting to change Wizarding culture, and introduce primitive muggle customs at Hogwarts.
With the newspaper article comes a great backlash, not only from the general public, but also the Board of Governors. In fact, Hermione learns that the Board requests that the club be disbanded. However, Dumbledore is able to shut them down, as he proves to have the last say.
Despite the success of the club, Hermione faces increased bullying from the Slytherins, which ultimately ends up with her being cursed. As Hermione wakes up in the Hospital Wing, Dumbledore visits her. She laments the fact that Wizards can't come together but he reminds her of just how long societal differences have kept people apart, and commends her on trying to change the world for the better. He reminds her, however, that to effect true change, one must be willing to make sacrifices along the way. Hermione takes his advice to heart and ponders over whether she is willing to make those sacrifices
Hermione meets with Dean and other muggle-borns and arranges for a football tournament that encompasses players from all houses, except Slytherin. The plan is a success, and the entire group is granted House points for promoting House Unity, as well as Inter-House sportsmanship. However, as the tournament comes to an end, a fight breaks out between Ron and Draco that quickly spreads to other members of their respective Houses. Detentions are given to all those involved, and even though Hermione, herself receives one, she can't help but think that she has gotten off to a good start.
As Hermione begins preparing to return to Hogwarts for her third year, she is reminded of the Riddle Diary, and begins to make notes in it. To her surprise, the diary writes back, and soon, Hermione is in constant communication with it. Although the diary probes into her emotional state, Hermione is much more interested in debating the mechanics behind the diary, as well as getting to know Tom. Tom quickly becomes exasperated with her curious nature, but he seemingly has a change of heart when she reveals that she is in possession of a Philosopher's Stone. Tom begins interacting with Hermione and questions her closely on how she has managed to possess something as rare and so powerfully magical as a Philosopher's stone.
Hermione explains the story and Tom behaves quite oddly. He is suddenly very interested in Lord Voldermort and Harry Potter. Hermione questions why he would be interested in such a thing and wonders what must have become of him. Tom responds by informing her that he must surely be long dead, as he had never once, since its creation, let the book out of his sight. Hermione becomes intrigued and speculates that Tom must have been an extremely powerful magician to have been able to store an imprint of himself at such a young age. Tom deflects and merely says that he had great teachers. Tom offers to teach Hermione some of the magics that he had been skilled in. Tom explains to Hermione, however, that due to his dormancy, he is not as powerful as he should be, but encourages Hermione to continue to write to him so that he may remain active.
With Hermione's return to Hogwarts and her huge workload, and attempting to keep up with the club, Hermione is unable to write to Tom for months, but she remembers to write to him a few months in. Tom is, understandably, quite irritated but when she reveals that she is also in possession of a time-turner, Tom, once again, becomes pacified. Hermione chalks this up to Tom's obsession with powerful magical devices and doesn't think much of it. With the strain of constantly travelling through time to attend all her classes and keep on top of all of her classes, Hermione's interactions with Tom become noticeably different, as Hermione realizes that Tom seems a lot more forceful.
Hermione begins to experience blackouts in which she cannot recall large parts of her day. After a series of petrifications occur at Hogwarts, and Hermione realizes that she is not in full control of her actions, Hermione becomes convinced that Tom is behind it. In a moment of lucidity, Hermione is able to distance herself from the book and she locks it in a compartment of her chest of drawers.
The school is convinced that Sirius Black is in fact causing the attacks, and that his ultimate goal is to attack Harry Potter. Aware, however, that she had been behind the attacks, Hermione confides in Harry that she suspects that Sirius is not the culprit. Her guilt however does not allow her to say much more but she volunteers to assist Harry in putting a stop to the attacks. Hermione begins practicing Occlumency after researching how she may protect her mind from Tom's infiltration. Harry gives them a large clue when it is discovered that Peter Pettigrew, who Sirius Black had supposedly murdered, was in fact Ron's pet. After reporting this to Professor Lupin, he confiscates the Marauder's Map and, during a Hosmeade visit, he confronts Sirius himself. Hermione, Harry, Ron and Dean, who had been planning another Clubhouse meeting, snoop around and discover that Lupin and Sirius have reunited. As the group moves to confront the two, Sirius reveals that Peter Pettigrew was a servant of the Dark Lord. Harry, enraged, attacks Peter, leaving him stunned. With the group's help, they are able to take Peter and Sirius back to the castle where they hand them over to Dumbledore. Within the castle, however, Lupin begins to suffer the effects of a full moon, and the group witnesses the martial magic of Dumbledore and Mcgonagall, who are able to subdue him.
The following day, word gets around that Peter Pettigrew had re-opened the Chamber of Secret and that Professor Lupin was a werewolf. With Peter's capture, the attacks seemingly cease, and the school year continues as normal.
Hermione returns to her home determined to defeat Tom Riddle. When she believes she has made significant progress with Occlumency, Hermione writes to Tom telling him a doctored version of the events of last year. Tom realizes that she is shielding from him and demands an explanation as to why she has been utilizing Occlumency. Hermione finally reveals to him that she has discovered that he had been controlling her over the previous school year. Tom reveals himself to be Lord Voldermort, and Hermione realizes that she must destroy the diary. Hermione begins attempting to destroy the diary through non-magical means, and goes to great lengths to discover magical means to do so as well. Unable to perform magic at home, Hermione waits until the start of semester to perform a ritual to destroy the diary.
Hermione returns to Hogwarts and seeks a hidden room to perform her ritual, however, she is unable to find any. With Death Eaters once more on the prowl, however, she believes that destroying the diary is paramount. Thus, Hermione sneaks into the Shrieking Shack to perform her purifying ritual. Hermione prepares an alchemical ritual utilizing the Philosopher's Stone to cleanse the diary. However, as she does so, the Diary activates a defense mechanism to defeat her. It shows her visions of all the petrified students that it says can only be blamed on her, and reminds her that she will amount to nothing in the world. Hermione is much shaken up but forges on, completing the ritual and expelling the spirit of Lord Voldermort. To her surprise, however, the diary itself remains intact, now simply the physical diary of the teenage Lord Voldermort.
In reading the diary, Hermione is given an excellent insight into the Dark Lord's mind. Moreover, his account of his forays into magical study intrigues Hermione and she learns scores of spells and magical theory. Through the diary, she learns of the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets and how one can access it. However, without the ability to utilize Parseltongue, herself, Hermione ropes Harry into assisting her. She, however, is not fully forthcoming with Harry and instead tells him that she believes she had found the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets through her research. Hermione, however, warns Harry that the Monster of Slytherin might still be in the Chamber, even though Harry is convinced that Peter Pettigrew was behind the petrifications.
Hermione and Harry explore the Chamber and when Harry insists that he can hear a voice calling out to him, Hermione pulls from within her bag, a rooster. The rooster cries out and then Harry and Hermione hear a loud screech and then a thud. After exploring the Chamber further, they come across the now-dead Basilisk. As Hermione begins studying the beast, however, Harry becomes agitated and tells Hermione that something doesn't add up. Harry is confused as to how Hermione could possibly know of the Chamber's entrance and also to bring a rooster to kill the basilisk. Hermione deflects, claiming that she was working based off a hunch but Harry doesn't seem to buy the excuse.
Hermione and Harry agree, however, to look past Harry's suspicions. With the Tri-Wizard Tournament in full effect, Hermione observes the Champions and tries to learn as many magical abilities as possible. With her Occlumency skills having really taken off, Hermione begins to practice Legilimency, as she always had an interest in learning the thoughts of others. However, Hermione's training is stalled as she debates over who she can use as a test subject. To her surprise, it is Viktor Krum who offers. Hermione's legilimency sessions with Krum quickly turn into a romantic attachment, and Krum invites her to the Yule Ball. For the first time in her life, Hermione begins to stress over her physical appearance, and after overhearing the boys of Gryffindor question who would take her to the Ball, she becomes determined to make a great and lasting impression.
On the night of the Yule Ball, Hermione had managed to detangle hair, leaving it full and curly and had selected a dress that she was certain would leave others speechless. Hermione has her first kiss with Krum and has a great time that night. It ends in anger, however, when Draco insults Hermione, leaving her in tears.
At the final installment of the Triwizard Tournament, there is an attack against the school by a mysterious group which ultimately ends in the death of Viktor Krum and Justin Finch-Fletchley. While Hogwarts mourns both, the newspaper, and the larger Wizarding World focuses solely on Krum's death, greatly angering Hermione.
With the school year at an end, Hermione realizes that she needs space from Wizarding Britain and decides to transfer to Mahoutokoro for a year.
At school in Mahoutokoro, Hermione's magical powers, usually the source of great pride, become a source of embarrassment, as she is no longer able to perform magic to the same degree as before. Instead, her anger and sadness fuels her powers causing there to be a great number of mishaps when she attempts to perform simple, non-destructive spells.
Hermione makes fast friends with a group of students, including Kimiko, Priya and Haru, who aim to help Hermione adapt to Mahoutokoro's rigid school system. Without the burden of Hogwarts' constant intrigue, and with the help of her friends, and Mahoutokoro's calming nature, Hermione is quickly able to regain her academic standing. As Mahoutokoro doesn't have O.W.L's, Hermione knows that she must return to Hogwarts at the end of the year. However, she is determined to return a much more focused and powerful witch. Communication between her friends at Hogwarts and herself greatly suffers however, as magical means are restricted and owls cannot traverse the distance between the schools.
Hermione enters into competition with her colleagues, as they all attempt to secure the top spots in each class. Such a distinction is greatly respected within the school and Hermione is determined to regain the respect of the students who had written off as merely another arrogant British wizard who attempts to brute force her way through problems. At the end of the school year, Hermione's hard work and dedication pay off and she earns a much-coveted Gold Robe.
Despite her success in academics, Hermione remains unable to keep up with the Japanese quidditch players, who she believes are miles ahead of most players back at Hogwarts.
At the end of the school year, Hermione returns to Hogwarts to complete her O.W.L.'s and quickly discovers that all has not been well since she left Britain. With Umbridge now running the school, and the inquisitorial squad out for blood, the Clubhouse had been disbanded, and muggle-born students seem to be disproportionately targeted. After her last exam, Hermione convenes a meeting of the Clubhouse, in which she argues that they must try to replace Umbridge. Hermione is initially met with upset students who claim that she had abandoned them. However, Hermione reminds them of their loss, and explains that Justin's memory didn't deserve to be tarnished by a toad like Umbridge. Mid-speech, however, Hermione's group is discovered, and she is escorted to Umbridge. Umbridge threatens to expel her and she accidentally lets slip that she believes Hermione is a mudblood. Outraged, Hermione duels the Headmaster, and encourages the Clubhouse members to turn against the inquisitorial squad. Mid-duel, Umbridge shoots out a cruciatus curse into the crowd which hits a younger student. As teachers attempt to join in on the side of the students, Umbridge flees. As she runs away however she begins to transform and she is revealed to be Bellatrix Lestrange, who reveals that she has broken out of Azkaban and has rejoined her master. As she leaves, the Minister, who had been contacted to restore order to Hogwarts arrives and is killed.
In her sixth year at Hogwarts, Hermione amps up her time with the Clubhouse members, establishing a plan for when Voldermort inevitably returns. With the Ministry having proven to be infiltrated, Hermione can no longer put any faith in Wizarding institutions. Dumbledore, she says, has already proven to be simply interested in Harry's life and no one else. Hermione devises a means of long-distance communication for the group and encourages them to keep attentive to any communication passed through the rings.
Harry reveals to Hermione that he will be hunting horcruxes. Hermione finally explains to Harry that she had been in possession of one, but that, she had finally destroyed it. After explaining her ordeal, Hermione gives Harry Tom Riddle's diary. Hermione learns that in addition to Harry, Neville and Ron plan to hunt Horcruxes. Ron requests that she go with them, but Hermione explains that she must protect the muggleborn students.
Over the holidays, Hermione is invited to attend Fleur's wedding, and when the Ministry falls, she is left scrambling to enact her plan. Hermione arrives at a building that she had "acquired" over the summer, and soon most members of the Clubhouse do as well. Hermione checks with them to ensure all had followed through with their plans. Hermione arranges (illegal) portkeys for many of the muggleborns who have brought their families with them which allows them to free Britain. With the Ministry fallen, they explain that it is finally time to fight for their place in Britain. Utilizing Muggle revolutionary tactics, the Clubhouse plots to target pureblood families that they know to be allied with the Death Eaters. With the passing of a bill that criminalizes muggleborns, Hermione's group, however, begins to focus their energies on a monumental plan to attack the Ministry and recover the muggleborns who have been captured.
The "siege" as it is termed, proves to be both a monumental success, as they are able to free the majority of the captive muggleborn population, as well as sow significant confusion within the ministry itself. However, in doing so, they lose two members of the organization, Ted Tonks, who is killed, and Dean Thomas, who is captured by the Death Eaters.
Worried that their location will be revealed, Hermione argues that the group must split up. Hermione's next plan of action is to capture Death Eaters, and so the group sets an ambush. Having served as bait, Hermione is greatly injured, but in the end they are able to capture a score of Death Eaters. On the recovery but still not at 100%, Hermione herself takes part in the interrogation of the Death Eaters. With no supply of Veritaserum, and no easy way of accessing, or brewing it, the Revolutionaries are forced to physically torture the inmates so that Hermione can break through their Occlumency shields. Hermione learns that Lord Voldemort has been in and out of the country, but that his base of operations has been Malfoy Manor. As Hermione relays the information to her partners, Hermione slips and activates the Taboo. While her partners are able to flee, due to her injuries, Hermione isn't, and she is captured and taken to Malfoy Manor. Once there, she is greeted by Bellatrix Lestrange who is eager to repay her for exposing her identity back in Hogwarts. Hermione is tortured by Bellatrix, and then sent to the dungeons. As she recovers, she discovers that Luna Lovegood, Olivander, and Dean Thomas are also captives. As Hermione recovers, despite her lack of a wand, Hermione's violent magic reasserts itself, and she is able to free herself. With the support of the others, Hermione is able to make her way out of the cellars and almost immediately is set upon by multiple Death Eaters. Dean overpowers Narcissa, and utilizing her wand, holds her hostage. Bellatrix, however, calls his bluff and kills Luna, by slicing her throat. Dean is horrified and attempts to kill Bellatrix, however, his Killing Curse misses and kills Draco. Narcissa wails and Bellatrix shrieks and attempt to attack them but Hermione, Ollivander and Dean are able to apparate away. Hermione, Dean and Ollivander end up in Hermione's childhood home. They scramble to leave though as they are certain that Death Eaters will look for them there. In no time at all, Dean, Olivander and Hermione are on the run in a stolen car. Dean and Hermione debate where to go as messages through their rings have gone unanswered. Hermione surmises that the group will not respond as it thinks that her ring must be compromised. They agree to make their way in a Northern direction, and soon arrive in Muggle Manchester. There, they stay at a hotel. Dean and Hermione completely break down once they settle in.
Hermione tries to contact other members of the clubhouse but have no such luck. With Grimmauld Place and the Weasleys under surveillance, she can think of no other Wizarding homes through which they can catch their bearings. After a particularly frustrating day, Hermione and Dean kiss, and proceed to have sex.
The next afternoon, through the Wizarding Radio, Dean and Hermione discover that Harry, Ron and Neville have broken into Gringotts and have escaped on the back of a Dragon, similarly spotted heading North. Hermione realizes that even though they cannot contact other members of the group, there is still much that can be done. Dean questions what she could mean and Hermione reveals her plan to infiltrate Hogwarts.
With inspiration in Ron's stories of his father's flying car and the boy's use of a Dragon, Hermione enchants the stolen vehicle and Dean and Hermione utilize it to get to Hogwarts. The car's enchantments falter as they arrive and Hermione and Dean essentially fall out of the sky. Dean's quick thinking allows them to make a safe but very conspicuous landing in the Black Lake. Dean has transfigured the car into a submarine and Hermione is taken aback at the intricacy and skill of the transfiguration. While Dean claims he is nowhere near the most skilled with transfigurations, his artistic talents do lend themselves to the field. As Hermione and Dean now worry about escaping the Black Lake, they are engulfed in the tentacles of the Giant Squid. Hermione and Dean do not wish to harm the Giant Squid, or encourage it to break the pod. While thinking of a spell to scare off the Squid, it suddenly stops and swims away. Hermione and Dean's pod thus sink to the bottom of the Black Lake, where they ponder what to do next. Dean laments the fact that he hadn't thought to just hide in a Lake somewhere and the two have a laugh.
Dean asks Hermione what her game plan is, and Hermione reveals that she plans to infiltrate Hogwarts. Hermione realizes that the Chamber of Secrets must have an entrance within the Black Lake. Through the use of magic, Hermione and Dean make their way to the Chamber of Secrets. Dean and Hermione make a plan to take control of the castle, but their plan is quickly put to a halt when they discover that the castle has already been liberated and preparations for Voldermort's attack is ongoing. Hermione and Dean quickly meet up with other members of the Clubhouse and Hermione takes control, ordering the muggleborns to assist in warding the castle. Meanwhile, Hermione herself frees her tight control over her magic.
Voldermort's forces arrive at the Castle and soon chaos reigns. Hermione originally aims to disarm and stun, but after coming across Lavender Brown's corpse, she unleashes her naturally destructive magic. As Hermione takes down scores of Death Eaters, she becomes the focus of attack by the combined duo of Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Tonks and Remus step in to even the scales, however, a nasty spell by Narcissa hits Tonks, leaving her dead. Remus attacks Narcissa and is able to deliver a great blow but Bellatrix retaliates and kills Remus as well. Sirius, enraged by the death of his cousin and his best friend, enters the fight. Hermione, having lost momentum due to shock and grief, picks back up and resumes fighting with all her power. As Sirius and Bellatrix exchange deadly spells, Hermione is herded by Narcissa. Hermione realizes Narcissa's intent but is unable to avoid being captured by the witch. Narcissa, mad with grief, however doesn't attempt to kill her right away, instead, she begins to torture Hermione, subjecting her to the Cruciatus Curse and then finally proceeding to get her knife to slit Hermione's throat. When Narcissa straddles Hermione, she suddenly falls over, hit with a curse by Ron.
When the fighting stops, Hermione makes her way to the Great Hall to regroup. There she discovers that Sirius and Bellatrix are dead, having killed each other, and that Molly Weasley had died, taking a curse meant for one of her children. Amongst the muggleborns, there are many injuries but few deaths. One however hits close to home for Hermione, Justin Finch-Fletchley, who had been Hufflepuff's most outspoken Muggle born and a self-professed coward. Dean, while physically fine, is beside himself with worry as he can't find Seamus. As Hermione comforts him, Seamus comes stumbling in through the Great Hall. Hermione leaves Dean and Seamus to speak and tries to keep on her feet, worried that if she were to sit down she may not get back up.
As Voldermort calls out to the Castle announcing that Harry is dead, Hermione is greatly shocked. She listens to Voldermort's speech and is completely repulsed by the tyrant's psychopathy. Harry, however, proves not to be dead and begins a duel with Voldermort. All around her battle occurs, and when she attempts to come to Dean's defense, who is facing off against an enraged Lucius Malfoy, she is left to defend herself against Dolohov and his savage attacks. Ron attempts to intervene to avenge his mother but Dolohov, almost lazily, curses him. Hermione once again has to let loose, and her destructive magic makes itself known. Dolohov, an Unspeakable, is greatly skilled in magic, and while Hermione is also much more skilled than most of her peers, she does not possess the repertoire of spells that Dolohov does. For much of the fight Hermione is on the defensive, however, after an opening presents itself, Hermione directs an extremely complex curse at Dolohov, simultaneously trapping him in place, and restricting his magic usage. With one more flourish of her wand, Hermione completely obliterates Dolohov, ignoring calls for her to simply disarm him.
As she turns to face a new foe, Hermione sees Harry defeat Voldemort, and almost immediately faints out of sheer exhaustion.
Hermione wakes up two days after the Battle of Hogwarts to discover that Kingsley Shacklebolt is interim Minister. While she initially is satisfied, she remembers that Shacklebolt is a Sacred 28 family, and immediately she is suspicious.
While assisting in the rebuilding of Hogwarts, Hermione and Dean try to form a romantic relationship but the two quickly realize that they aren't very compatible as romantic partners. However, they remain good friends and the two discuss how life should change for muggleborns to ensure that the Wizarding World moves forward. Hermione convenes a Clubhouse meeting, and after acknowledging the passing of Justin, Hermione proposes that the group form an ultimatum to hand over to the magical government.
Hermione arranges a meeting with Kingsley. Prepared to fight tooth and nail against a bigot, Hermione is surprised to find in Kingsley an extremely receptive politician. However, she is wary to once again entrust her life into the hands of pure-blooded wizards once more, and despite Kingsley's open ear policy, Hermione is firm in her stance that muggleborns must be given equal access to positions of power and influence. Hermione is surprised to be offered a position working at the Ministry right away and is hesitant to accept as she still greatly wishes to finish her schooling. Hermione ultimately declines Kingsley's offer, but recommends Penelope Clearwater to the position instead. Hermione, also, makes the tough decision to not return to Hogwarts either, instead opting to join her parents in Japan for a bit, so that she can get away from the reminders of the trauma of war.
Hermione's time in Japan is cut short, however, when, almost 6 months after the Battle of Hogwarts, she discovers that she is pregnant. With the only possible father being Dean, Hermione returns to England to track him down at Hogwarts. Hermione does not wish to visit the Castle, so instead she remains in Hogsmeade and writes to Dean to meet her. Once Dean sees Hermione, he immediately understands their predicament and has a rather unenthused response. Hermione is both amused and irritated by his response and reminds him that she hadn't desired the outcome either but that it was out of their control now.
Due to the pregnancy, Dean puts things on pause with Seamus and tries to rekindle things with Hermione but she is adamant that they do not need to be in a romantic relationship. Hermione gives birth to a girl who she names Rosalind Granger-Thomas. With Dean's dark skin and light brown eye colour and Hermione's hair and eye shape, Rose is a perfect mix of the two. Dean chooses Seamus to be godfather, and Hermione selects Padma Patil as godmother.
Despite becoming a mother at 19, Hermione is determined to still make her mark on the Wizarding World. As such, she begins an at-home project to draft legislation aimed at eliminating structural prejudice within the Wizarding World.
