Feeling better than I had in days, I yawned and stretched. I didn't know how long I had slept for but I was certain that it was longer than my current week's worth. I hope Hawkmoth was stepping on a floor of legos for what he pulled. Maybe that will keep him busy during the trip.
I lifted the plane's window screen and peered out. The sun was out, painting the clouds that carpeted the sky below in pink and gold light. How much longer till we were in Shanghai?
I was going to be out of Paris for two whole weeks. Two whole weeks to go sightseeing. Two whole weeks without seeing my friends, without Adrien, no Chat Noir either.
Oh, Chatton!
I didn't tell him I would be out of Paris. What if there's an Akuma while I'm gone? Will chat be okay? What if I can't get back? What if Hawkmoth realizes I'm gone and goes crazy? Everyone will be in danger a- Wait, breathe Marinette. I, as Ladybug, the guardian of the miracle box, should still have access to the horse miraculous in Shanghai. So I could portal my way back. Yeah, that could work. I just need to keep my eyes on the Parisian news. Chat can call if there's a problem.
Everything will be fine. I have Tikki with...me?
Did I bring Tikki?
I don't remember getting her. Oh, no. I glance at my little, pink bag. She should be in there. She was always in there. I just needed to check.
With all the slow tense precision of a bomb squad I lifted my clutch up to eye level. Squeezing my eyes shut, I clicked it open. Please, be there, Tikki, please. I cracked an eye open to see my kawami curled up asleep on my phone. I sighed in relief.
"What was that all about?" Maman asked. She was sitting in the seat next to me with an earbud in one ear that was attached to a movie screen. Papa was doing his best impersonation of a sleeping bear on the other side of her.
"Thought I left my phone, but" I gently moved Tikki over, careful not to wake her, and pulled my phone out, "I didn't."
Maman shook her head before placing the other earbud in her ear and returning her attention to her movie.
I entered my phone's passcode, connected to the plane's wifi, and checked first the Ladyblog, and then the Parisian news. There hadn't been any reported Akuma sighting but that didn't mean much. Chat could have found one that was flying under the radar. I should call him.
Exiting the news report, I opened the world clock app and checked the time in Paris. It was 5 minutes before our agreed daily patrol time there. Yep, I should definitely call my partner.
I excused myself to the restroom. Maman tried to rouse Papa so I could pass, but he was too out of it. I ended up having to climb over Papa, doing my best not to step on or wake him and fell into the aisle.
Ears burning, I quickly minced to the bathroom, eyes glued to floor. Once locked in there, I again brought my bag to eye level. Opening it to find Tikki still asleep.
I gently rubbed circles into her cheek with a pointer finger, in an attempt to wake her. The red kawami yawned and gave a tired smile before sitting up and rubbing her eyes.
"Hey Tikki, sorry to wake you, but I need to transform and speak to a certain cat."
She yawned again before nodding, giving her consent to the transformation.
"Tikki, spots on." I said, changing into Ladybug. Unclipping my yoyo from my side I called my partner. He answered on the first ring.
"Hey, Bugaboo."
I rolled my eyes, "What did I say about calling me Bugaboo?" That cat. "Look, I'm calling because I can't come today."
"Oh," he said, disappointment thick in his voice, "I guess, I'll see you tomorrow."
"I actually won't be able to come to any patrols for the time being."
"Really? Why not?"
"The answer to that is… a bit too personal to give."
"You're not hurt are you? Is that it? Are you in the hospital?"
"What, no. I'm fine, Cat."
"Then... why are we having a voice call and not a video call?"
That cat.
"Is this a ploy to see me?"
Chat gasped. Even though I couldn't see him, I'm fairly certain he placed a hand over his heart in mock offense, "My lady, I assure you that my intentions are pure."
I snorted, "Fine, I'll switch to video call." Might as well indulge him.
"Really?"
"Yes, really." I pulled my yoyo from my ear and heft a sigh. That cat.
Just as I was about to make the switch something caught the corner of my eye. It was a sign right next to me explaining what to do incase of an emergency landing. Maybe I should make sure that there wasn't anything that could give my location away.
"One moment my kitty. I need to move," I glance around the room looking for an inconspicuous spot. Huh, airplane bathrooms have a lot of warning and emergency labels going on.
"Why do you need to move?"
"Again, personal answer."
"Are you in your room?"
"Nope."
"One day, I will know all your secrets."
I chuckled, "Good luck with that, kitty."
I ended up sitting on the floor, curled up in the cramped space. Feet flat on the door, my back pressed against the only part of the bathroom's walls that didn't have some sort of warning sign visible.
Double checking that there weren't any other tell-tale markers behind me I switched to video. My cat's dorky face filled the screen.
"See, I'm fine, cat." I waved at him.
"Ahh good, that's good." He stretched giving me a wider view of what was behind him.
I squinted, "Is that the Agreste manor behind you?"
"Oh, is it?" Chat glanced behind him, nonchalant, "I guess it is."
Huh, Chat must have been passing by when I called. Too bad the view was only of the front. Maybe I could convince Chat to go around the building and possibly catch a glimpse of Adrien. I mean Adrien does have giant floor to ceiling windows in his room. The chance to see him was fairly high since it was time for his piano practice.
No, no, bad Marinette. That would be an abuse of not only power but also an abuse of your partner's trust.
And how would I even convince him. Hey Minou, I know you're in love with me, but would you mind helping me spy on the boy I like?
Yeah, that would go over well. Wouldn't be mean or cruel at all to my partner.
"Are you purr-haps interested in the Agrestes, M'lady?" Chat suggestively wiggled his eyebrows, a grin stretching over his face.
Nope. Nun-uha. I am not having this conversation with him.
"I'm ending the call now." I said, hanging up despite Chat's protest.
With a sigh I released the transformation. Tikki landed on my stomach, mewling for cookies. Promising I'll get her some, I placed her back in my bag.
Exiting the restroom, I snagged a pack of cookies from an attendant while returning to my seat. Papa was still snoring up a storm and I had to, again, climb over him before I could sit.
The rest of the flight was spent between watching videos, looking out the window, and lightly dozing.
Darn it. Did I remember to pack a hair brush?
