No one saw it coming. It was an average Tuesday afternoon when Jack stumbled while running down the stadium steps. His head hit the hard concrete every few steps; by the time he reached the bottom he was unconscious.

"He's going to love that," Kate smiled. Aaron sat on the hospital bed by Jack's feet, drawing pictures for his dad.

"I hope you like it, Daddy!" Aaron called, glancing up at Jack. He had a good amount of bruising but was otherwise incredibly lucky.

Kate combed Jack's hair and cleaned his ears.

"Grandma!" Aaron yelled when Margo entered the room.

"There's my boy!" Margo scooped him into her arms. "You're sure?" She asked Kate.

"It's a sponge bath. Jack would be mortified to know a coworker bathed him."

"He's lucky to have you. I didn't—"

"I know what you mean." Although they weren't together anymore, she'd been by his side since the accident.

"I'll let you get to it. Do you want anything from the cafeteria?"

"I'm okay, thank you."

"You need to eat." Since Jack's accident, Kate had lost her appetite. Her days revolves around making sure Jack was taken care of.

"I'm fine."

When Kate was alone with Jack, she gave him a sponge bath. "I'm just washing you," she whispered with a small smile when she got to his crotch. "You've got to wake up," Kate whispered, gently scratching his scalp. "I miss you, you know." She leaned down and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Come back. Come home."

Within three hours, Jack woke up. He first noticed Aaron, and then his mother. "Where's Kate?"

"She's just getting coffee and running to the bathroom. She's been by your side this whole time."

"Mom, I know Kate and I haven't been together that long, but we've been through a lot together—"

"Jack, I don't—"

"I'm going to ask Kate to marry me."

Margo suddenly realized Jack wasn't completely fine. When the doctor came in to examine Jack, Margo met Kate in the hallway.

"He's awake!" Margo cried. Kate picked up her pace, trying to rush. "He asked for you."

"He's okay?" Kate sobbed, getting choked up.

"Honey," Margo grabbed Kate's arm, stopping her. "His short term memory is… I don't know… it's affected."

"He has amnesia?" She asked. Suddenly reality hit her. "He doesn't remember me," she assumed.

"He thinks you're still together."

"Oh." Kate didn't know how to react. It would break her heart to relive their breakup all over again. She still hadn't gotten past it. "I'll have to tell him, maybe once he's had time to process everything."

"Unless you don't," Margo raised one eyebrow. "He doesn't remember the pills or the booze. This could be your second chance."

"Margo, be realistic. Convincing someone with amnesia that you're in love is a movie storyline. Life isn't a movie."

"What if it were?"

"Mar—"

"What if it's time for your happy ending? You deserve one, Kate. And you're the best thing that's ever happened to my son." She let Kate think for a moment before speaking again. "What have you got to lose?"

Kate gulped, her eyes wide. She didn't want to deceive Jack, but she couldn't pretend she didn't love the idea of being back together. She had missed the way he held her at night. She missed the way he played with her hair. She missed him.

"Okay," Kate whispered. "I'll do it.
