Author's Note: This is the second installment in my Supercorp one-shots inspired by Christmas Carols. This one is set before 'I Saw Auntie Kissing Santa Claus'. The song that inspired this one was 'Twelve Pains of Christmas by Bob Rivers'. If you haven't listened to it, I suggest you do. It's pretty funny.
Happy Reading.
The Second Pain of Christmas
Alex walked into the living room holding Esme's hand to find Lena sitting by the fireplace reading. "Hey, where's Kara?"
Lena looked up from her book, "She's on the roof putting up lights."
"Alone?" Alex questioned, not sure she heard correctly.
Lena nodded, "She didn't want my help, even to just watch, so she's up there doing them by herself."
"Weird. Esme and I didn't see her up there when we got here," Alex pointed out, wondering where her sister could be.
"Yeah, I called for Auntie Kara, and she didn't appear like she normally does," Esme added, walking over to sit on the couch with Lena. "What are you reading?"
"Oh, it's the newest science journal, this one is about the advancements in Robotics. Do you want to take a look?" Lena asked, holding the book out for her. The page Lena was on had a picture of a robot on it.
"Oooo.." Esme's eyes lit up excited to take a look at the book. She turned each page one by one taking a look at the pictures.
"So she was on the roof, but you don't know where she is now?" Alex asked, sitting down on a chair across from Lena.
Lena shrugged, "She should be up there. Are you sure she just didn't hear you.. Oh, right. Her hearing. Maybe she was too focused and wasn't paying attention."
"No, Aunt Kara always hears me, no matter where I am. Even when Mommy tells her not to. Like last week," Esme said without elaborating on what she was referring to.
Alex looked at Esme surprised, "What happened last week?"
Esme looked up from her book, "Oh, um, I'm not supposed to say."
"Esme…" Alex narrowed her eyes on her.
Esme lifted up her eyes from the book as if she was listening to something. She was showing the face Kara usually gets when she hears someone in distress. "Wait… I can hear Aunt Kara." She burst out laughing. "Mom, Aunt Lena, we need to get our jackets and go outside," She spit out as she was laughing.
Lena and Alex looked at each other for a moment, before they got up and walked over to the front entrance to get their jackets.
They pulled on their jackets, and toque and mitts, before heading out and following Esme because she seemed to know where Kara was.
As they rounded one of the corners of the house, they found her.
"Esme! You were supposed to come alone," Kara chided her.
Esme couldn't help the giggles seeing her in full view. "How was I supposed to get away from Mom and Aunt Lena?"
"Good point. Alex, can you get me down?" Kara asked.
Kara was hanging off the side of the house, about mid-way down upside down wrapped in a bunch of lights preventing her from moving. She had called Esme because she knew the little girl was there, and would be able to hear her so she didn't have to admit the truth.
"Where did you take Esme last week?" Alex asked, crossing her arms.
"Alex, come on, why don't you let me down and we can talk about it?" Kara suggested, hoping that would be enough for her sister.
Alex shook her head, "Nope. I left Esme in her room, and then later you returned her to the front door. I thought it was odd, but didn't think much of it as I was sure Kelly let her go with you. Now I'm learning that wasn't the case. So… If you want to get down, you're going to tell me where you took her."
Kara's eyes flashed to Lena before immediately looking back at Alex "I can't say."
"I guess you're fine staying upside down like a bat then," Alex wasn't standing down.
She looked at Lena again, and back to Alex, through clenched teeth she reiterated, "I really can't say." She looked back toward Lena before looking at Alex again.
Alex finally got the hint looking toward Lena briefly, "Oh… I see how it is. So Esme helped you with whatever you were doing?"
Kara nodded, "Yes. She gave me the idea, so she helped me but that's all I can say."
"Okay, what is going on? Kara, just tell Alex what she wants so she can get you down." Lena finally had it, she was deliberately being left out of the conversation and wanted to know what she was missing.
"Esme helped me with a surprise for you," Kara admitted looking right at Lena. Well what she could see as she was still upside down and was about eight feet higher than Lena. She looked back over at Alex, "Kelly, gave me permission to borrow Esme for the afternoon so she could help me with it. Now can someone please get me-."
Kara dropped to the ground face first into the snow bank.
Esme burst out laughing again, as Lena moved closer to help Kara up, narrowing her eyes on Alex for not warning her first. Alex opened her eyes wide, and shrugged her shoulders.
Kara got up and out of the snow, "I guess I maybe deserved that. You could have warned me."
Alex laughed, "Right, and you're out here doing what exactly?"
"I'm putting up the lights," Kara explained. "When I got stuck, I couldn't exactly get my way out because I didn't want to break the cord, but I guess I should have since that's exactly what you just did." She picked up the cord that had scorch marks from the blast from whatever weapon Alex manifested to get her down.
"At least I didn't lie to someone I'm dating," Alex pointed out.
"What are you talking about? I didn't lie," Kara shot back.
"Oh yeah, does Lena know how many times you've successfully put up the lights?" Alex put her hands on her hips.
Lena stepped to the side and looked from Alex to Kara, "What is she talking about? You made it seem like you've done this before. That it would be easy."
Kara and Alex stared at each other waiting for the other to break before Kara gave up, "Fine, I haven't done this much. I did help in Midvale sometimes, but more often than not, Alex and Jeremiah would kick me off the roof. I thought they were being dramatic. I thought I could do it but then I found out that only certain ends connect to each other, then there are little clips you need… Do you know how many I've dropped all over the place? It's insane. Then as I was sure I was almost done, I slipped on some ice, and I fell down, rolled over the remaining strands I had, fell off the roof and well…"
"The rest is history," Alex broke and started laughing. She turned to Lena, "You must really like my sister to believe that."
"I had no idea I was going to have so many problems. It was such a pain in the butt. Who knew Christmas Lights would be such an issue." Kara huffed in annoyance. "Then I heard Esme call me and I hoped that she was close enough to me that she would be able to help me out." She looked over at Esme who was trying to hold in her laugh.
"Sorry Auntie," Esme apologized, not sounding very sincere.
"Uh huh, you sound very sorry," Kara said sarcastically. "Why are you here anyways?"
"Oh, I'm sorry did I barge in on your super secret plans with Lena?" Alex asked. "Do you guys live here now or what? Kara, I stopped by your apartment, then Catco, only to find out you're here."
"I'm getting the house ready for Christmas so that when everyone comes to stay around Christmas it'll be ready," Kara argued.
"Mhmm, sure. To me, it seems like you two are living together," Alex said again.
"The paparazzi are everywhere in National City Alex, at least here we don't have to worry about it," Kara pointed out.
"Kara's right. Yes, we've been spending a lot of time here together, but when we're not here we have to deal with cameras in our faces," Lena agreed with what Kara had said. "Which I have gotten used to, being a Luthor, but your sister is not used to it." She said the last part with wide eyes.
"It was one time. One time that a paparazzi guy got a little too close. It's not my fault that the guy tripped over his feet," Kara pointed out.
"Mmhmmm, right, I'd trip over my feet too if a tree came flying toward me too," Lena added to the story.
Kara dropped her head in defeat, "I was a little distracted. Let's just say that and move on."
"Oooo.. What does that mean?" Alex wiggled her eyebrows in curiosity.
"I think you know what I mean, Alex," Kara raised her eyebrows to try to get the message across seeing as Esme was in the area.
It took Alex a few minutes before it clicked, "Ohhh… Well no wonder. He had it coming. Also, gross, I didn't need to know that."
"You asked," Kara pointed out. "Now, let me finish what I'm doing out here." She jumped up and shot into the air.
Alex laughed as they watched Kara swoop back up into the sky to complete the lights on the roof. "Okay, well, I guess we should be going."
"Oh, didn't you say you came here for a reason?" Lena asked, wondering what they were doing there.
"Not really, I mostly came here to see if the rumours were true about you and Kara," Alex said with a smile. "I'm happy for you Lena."
"Thanks Alex," Lena smiled as well.

By the time Kara reappeared in the house, the sun had been going down by this point. She walked into the living room, and plopped down onto the couch next to Lena. "Phew. I've finally finished. Now I see why Alex and Jeremiah never wanted my help. How was your day?"
Lena laughed, "It was good. Alex seems to think you and I are living together though because we spend so much time here."
Kara looked over at Lena, "Alex thinks a lot of things. I wouldn't pay her much attention." She leaned over, connecting their lips briefly for a proper hello. "What is that I smell? Did you make dinner, and not tell me?"
Before Lena could answer, Kara disappeared, and reappeared moments later with a plate of food. "I thought you might be hungry when you were done, so I made some pasta."
Kara scooped a rather large forkful into her mouth, as she was nodding. "Thanks," She mumbled, covering her mouth so she didn't spit noodles everywhere.
"You're welcome," Lena smiled, happy knowing that she was able to bring Kara some joy after having so many difficulties outside. "So about our living arrangements…"
It didn't take Kara long to finish off her bowl, before she turned her attention to Lena, "What about them?" She wiped her mouth with the napkin she had bright with her bowl.
"We've been dating now for just about six months, and during most of that time, we've spent our time here," Lena pointed out.
Kara wasn't seeing the issue, "And… As stated, with the paparazzi, it just made more sense to spend time here together. Not only is this house huge, but it provides a lot of protection for both of us. It's a win-win situation. Plus it has so many accommodations, like the pool." She pointed out hoping to take advantage of the pool sometime.
"Yes, this house has its perks but seriously, when was the last time you stayed at your apartment?" Lena asked the woman next to her.
Kara looked up in thought, "Hm… That's a good question. I'm not sure, probably a week, maybe more. What about you? I haven't seen you in your condo in a while either."
"Why would I go to my condo, if you're here?" Lena pointed out the error in Kara's statement.
"Right… I'm sorry, I still don't know what you're getting at," Kara looked at Lena confused.
"Kara, do you want to move in with me?" Lena asked, finally asking the question. She wanted to make it official because up until this point, she hadn't realized just how much time she was spending with Kara at this house.
"I thought we already lived together, did you miss the memo?" Kara asked, laughing at the look on Lena's face. "I'm sorry, I had to say it. I would love to move in with you." She leaned over connecting her lips with Lena's. "I've been wanting to ask you for a long time, but this wasn't my house so…"
"Well it's your house now," Lena smiled before pulling Kara in for another kiss.
"I guess it is," Kara couldn't help the giddy smile she had on her face. "Next year, let's get someone else to put up the lights, okay?"
Lena laughed, "Deal."
