"And now," said the woman behind the news desk. "It's been five years since the disappearance of Britain's very own superheroine, Stephanie Barlow reports..."
The screen cut to a warehouse on the London docks, the sign on the front displaying the number '5'. The camera panned down to a woman in a grey, a microphone attached to the collar of her top.
"Thank you Cherami. Yes, it has in fact been half a decade since Sailor V was last sighted here..." she gestured to the warehouse behind her. "...where she was reported to have died in an explosion. Official Interpol information is still top secret so the details of the case are still unclear. Nevertheless, rumours have run rampant, but not as rampant as the speculation surrounding Sailor V herself."
A montage of images flashed across the screen, all of them depicting a masked blonde woman in a stylized Japanese schoolgirl uniform. Stephanie's voice played over the assortment of magazine covers, news footage, toys and protestors dressed in knock-off outfits.
"Sailor V made her audacious debut in late 1991 when she seemingly assaulted a London schoolboy. As it turned out the boy was in fact far from human and had himself been assaulting girls aged between 13-16 from the local schools. Initially reluctant to talk to the authorities, she was not immediately welcomed by the British public. This soon changed when the police confirmed they were working with her to combat similar cases of assault. In an official statement by the London Met, Sailor V's reluctance to go on record was owed in part to her being a foreign national, apparently having migrated from Japan."
A new montage of newspaper headlines danced across the screen.
"In fact, on one of the few instances Sailor V ever spoke publicly, describing herself as a 'Sailor Senshi', the British tabloids incorrectly translated her description as a 'Sailor Scout'. It is a label that sticks in the minds of many to this day, and on occasion still sparks debate."
A man in a grey suit and a condescending expression appeared.
"To me the label is simply inappropriate. To begin with, as a female, she would never have been eligible for any of the British Scout programs, and she hardly seemed associated with the Brownies either. Secondarily, by all accounts she did not 'scout' about, she took far more direct action, the kind we ought to see more of in this country."
Next, an elderly woman in a tartan scarf appeared on the screen.
"Oh aye, I dinnae care wot they say, she'll always be a scout tae me."
The screen cut to a middle-aged couple in a pub, the man nursing a pint of beer.
"We just never understood why she was called a 'sailor', did we luv?"
"Nah, we didn't, no. She weren't never on a boat, now was she?"
"If she ever came 'ere, tah t'north like, it'dve felt right daft tah call 'er sailor, weren't it luv?"
"Yeah. Yeah it would."
One of the language stereotypes I know of the Yorkshire accent (I lived in York for 2 years) was they said "in t'north" a lot, basically shortening the to t' in front of anything even if there was no vowel.
Finally, a gang of teenager appeared, the boys laughing together. A boy at the forefront calmed down enough to speak into the microphone.
"All I know is, wearing that she was fit fam, ya get me, yeah?"
The boys broke into laughter again.
One of the girls however rolled her eyes. "As if."
Despite muttering, her words were still picked up by the microphone, let alone the schoolboy. He made a noise by sucking his teeth and shot a scowl at her.
Stephanie's voice struck up again, this time over quick shots of Tokyo.
"Speculation was further fuelled by the sudden appearance of a similar figure in Tokyo."
News footage of another blonde girl in a somewhat similar uniform danced across the screen, although this one had her hair tied up into two buns atop her head.
"Sailor Moon appeared in Japan's capital less than a year after Sailor V made the scene in London. Conspiracy theories soon cropped up that they were one and the same. However, these were swiftly debunked when reports confirmed Sailor V operating in London and Sailor Moon in Tokyo on the very same day. However..."
More footage played upon the screen now, this time depicting a group of girls in stylized uniforms, with particular attention paid to a blonde sporting an orange skirt.
"...theories that Sailor Moon's ally, Sailor Venus, was Britain's former heroine were far harder to disprove. Sailor Venus emerged approximately six months after Sailor V disappeared from Britain's shores. Although there are reports of Sailor V active in Tokyo between her disappearance in London and the debut of Sailor Venus, these have not yet been substantiated."
The screen cut back to the woman in the tartan scarf.
"Ah rekun they're the same, hen. Ye cannae keep a bonnie lass like 'ere down." Ye cannae
The superior looking man returned, his brow furrowed in a disapproving expression.
"It is my considered view that Sailor V died for this country and that this Sailor Venus has disgracefully ripped off her mantle."
The couple from the pub returned next.
"Me mate thinks there're two Sailor Vs and the one in To-kee-yo changed her brand to become Sailor Venus, ain't that right luv?"
"Yeah he does, he reckons she 'ad to or else she'dve been sued."
"Ay bruv..." The screen had switched back to the school kids, the lead boy speaking up again. "Ya know I would've tried it on with her no matter what went by, know what I mean yeah!?"
The school girl from earlier shot the boy a condescending look. "Oh my days Callum!"
Callum scowled again. "Why you being a next man Carrie! Are you actually dizzy!"
"Nah I ain't blud, but you is if you think you can be chirpsing with Sailor V. She is well lush. And you is bare butters init!"
As Carrie walked off Callum tried (and failed) to not look deflated as his friends turned their jeering upon him.
The screen then cut to Stephanie walking down a street, the Tokyo tower strategically framed behind her.
"Here, in Tokyo," she gestured around herself, "Opinions on Sailor Venus seem to be far more generous."
The screen cut to a teenage girl sitting in her bedroom. The room was cluttered with Sailor Venus merchandise, and the walls were utterly plastered with posters of the orange Senshi. As she spoke, a voice over dubbed her words into English.
"I run a Sailor Venus message board and my school's Sailor Venus fan club. Oh! And I also have the world's largest Sailor Venus collection."
"Do you remember what sparked your interest in Sailor Venus?" asked the interviewer.
"Yes, yes of course. It all began when I was in kindergarten, she and Sailor Moon saved my school bus from being attacked by a horrible monster!"
The screen cut to an athletic man in his early-20s, a volleyball tucked under his arm.
"I can tell you for a fact that I wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for Sailor Venus."
Finally, the screen cut to a middle-aged gentleman leaning against a rake.
"I think people underestimate her. Several years ago, I was tending this park," he vaguely gestured towards the surrounding, "when her friends were in a real pinch because of these pair of circus weirdos. Anyway, Sailor Venus appeared and she seemed really furious. She fired about a dozen laser shots at them and I got the feeling this was something personal, you know?"
The screen cut back to Stephanie, once more in front of the warehouse.
"We may never know the full story of Sailor V, Sailor Venus or if they are indeed one and the same. Such is the nature of life, or as the French say…" Stephanie threw a 'V' sign and a cheeky grin. "...c'est la vie! Back to you Cherami."
The woman behind the news desk reappeared, subtly tidying up some papers before her.
"Well, your timing couldn't be more perfect there Stephanie. In other news, pop star history will be made next week when Japanese idol Minako Aino begins her UK debut tour."
A headshot of a blonde woman with a red hair bow appeared next to Cherami. The woman was delivering a movie star smile accompanied by a cheeky wink and flashing a 'V for Victory' gesture.
"Minako Aino has already topped UK charts with her hit single 'C'est La Vie', and is set to perform the song alongside other hits from her album this Friday. Joining her on stage are fellow Japanese musical artists, including violinist Michiru Kaioh and pop group the Three Lights, the trio making their limited time comeback tour. Pre-sales for the concert have already broken box office records, a fact mainly attributed to Aino's love of bilingual performances. In her latest interview she said.-"
Cherami was suddenly silenced, although her mouth kept moving as though nothing had happened.
"Come on Mina, time for bed."
The little girl frowned and looked up pleadingly at the man holding the remote.
"Please Daddy, it's about Minako Aino."
He shook his head. "You're going to see her in person next week at that concert."
Without another word, he scooped the girl up and carried her into a dark bedroom where he promptly tucked her in.
"Goodnight sweetheart."
"Wait! You forgot-"
"Oh, right." The man exaggeratedly smacked his head. "Silly me."
He picked up a stuffed Sailor Venus toy from the side of the bed and handed it to the child. She took it gratefully and nuzzled into it, her eyes drooping soon afterwards.
Moments later the man returned to the TV where a woman, who strongly resembled the little girl, was now watching the muted TV.
"They still going with that report?" He asked.
"Well, she's very popular," replied the woman.
The man chuckled. "Yeah well… good for her, eh? As for me, I'm ready to turn in for the night? You?"
"Maybe in a little bit, but you go ahead."
"Alright then, goodnight love."
"Night Al."
The woman turned up the volume just enough to hear the report, although the graphics of all the music charts and record breaking stats got the point across.
Finally the report ended and the woman turned the TV off.
A small smile crossed her face. "Go get 'em Mina," said Katarina.
