DECISIONS
Candy Pruitt walks into Ben's General Store to send a telegram. Ever since Jason had delivered the news of her mother's passing, she has been trying to get her life back in order. She hadn't really thought about going back to New Bedford to settle the estate until Jeremy asked if she was going. Now, that's all she can think about. It isn't a trip she's looking forward to making again. Six long months is what it took for the Brides to arrive in Seattle all the way from New Bedford. The trip wasn't too bad, only because she had met Jeremy on the Shamus O"Flynn, the boat, uh ship, that brought the Brides to Seattle. Her and Jeremy had spent almost all of their free time together. By the time the ship arrived in Seattle, they were in love. This time it would be different. She would have to make that long trip by herself, except for her little brother and sister, Molly and Christopher.
Ben greets Candy. "Uh Candy, Emily and me are real sorry about the passing of your mother. Is there anything you need?"
"Thank you, Ben. No, we don't need anything." She pauses. "I do need to send a telegram though."
She reaches into her pocket and brings out a neatly written message and hands it to Ben.
Ben reads the message before getting the telegraph clicking. It is to Reverend Andrew Morton, the same Reverend who had sent the news to Candy about her mother. When finished, he looks at Candy and says, "I hope you get news that your Grandpa Pruitt made it back to New Bedford, so you won't have to make that trip."
"So do I, Ben. So do I." She looks and sounds forlonely. "How much do I owe you Ben?"
"Nothing Candy. I'm just glad I can do something for you."
Candy gives him a sad smile. "Thanks Ben. If I get a reply, would you send it over to the dormitory as soon as possible?"
"I sure will. Take care."
Candy nods her head and walks slowly back to the dormitory.
A couple of hours later, Ben delivers the news that Candy has been waiting on. Her Grandpa Pruitt has not returned to New Bedford. Now Candy is faced with making the trip back to her hometown. "Ben, do you know when Clancey will be back in Seattle?"
"Not before the end of the week. Uh Candy, I don't think Clancey is planning a trip to New Bedford anytime soon."
"Probably not, but I thought if he could take me to San Francisco, then I could find passage the rest of the way somehow." She sighs. "I guess I should talk to Jeremy and get his opinion. Thanks Ben, for bringing the telegram over."
"You're welcome. Good luck to ya."
When Jeremy finishes work for the day, he walks back to the Bolt cabin where he grabs a quick bite to eat, freshens up, then off he goes to see Candy. Arriving at the dormitory, he knocks on the annex door.
Molly, answering the door says, "Hello Jeremy, come on in. Candy is upstairs getting ready."
"Hello Molly," he says as he pats her shoulder, noticing Christopher sitting on his bunkbed. "Hello Christopher." Christopher looks up at Jeremy and nods. "What have you two been up to today?"
"Not much. Mostly just keeping Candy company," Molly states.
"Yeah, so she won't be so sad," Christopher chimes in.
Jeremy smiles. "I'm sure Candy appreciates you spending time with her. I want to thank you for being here and helping your sister."
Candy walks in and hurries to Jeremy's side. "I thought I heard your voice." She gives Jeremy a smile and Jeremy greets her with a hug and a quick kiss.
Jeremy takes her hand as he asks, "Can you go for a walk?"
Candy replies, "Yes, just give me a second." She walks over to the inside dormitory-annex door and calls out, "Biddie, Jeremy and I are going for a walk. Can you watch the children and be sure they're in bed by eight o'clock?"
Biddie comes through the door all smiles. "Yes indeedy! Now you two go have fun and don't worry about a thing." She practically pushes Candy and Jeremy out the door.
Jeremy holds his hand out for Candy to take. She clutches his arm tightly before moving her hand down his arm to hold his hand, intertwining their fingers. They walk silently and slowly to their favorite spot. Jeremy helps Candy up to sit on the large boulder overlooking the water. Sitting next to her, he puts his arm around her as she lays her head on his shoulder. "How are you, really?" he asks.
"I'm all right." She raises her head and looks at Jeremy. "You look tired. Maybe you should have stayed home and gotten some rest."
"I am tired, but I'm never too tired to spend time with you." He kisses her cheek.
They sit in silence for a few minutes. "Jeremy, I sent a telegram to Reverend Morton asking if Grandpa had made it back to New Bedford. He replied he hasn't seen Grandpa."
"Maybe he hasn't had time to get there yet. Give him a little more time."
"I'm afraid if Grandpa doesn't hurry and get there, I'll have to go to New Bedford. Me and the children, that is."
Jeremy jumps down from the boulder, turns to face Candy, and says in a stern voice, "Candy, there's no way I'm letting you and your brother and sister go all that way by yourselves. If you have to go, I'm going with you."
"You can't do that, Jeremy!"
"And just why not? Who's going to stop me?"
Candy reaches out and touches his cheek lovingly. In a soft meek voice she replies, "I am. What would people say about us traveling across the country together and us not married?"
"To hell with what people would say! You're not going by yourself and that's that, Candy!" Jeremy sets his jaw firmly and walks over to the edge of the water.
Candy starts to cry. "I'm sorry, Jeremy. Please don't be mad."
Hearing her cry, Jeremy rushes over to her, taking her in his arms. "I'm sorry too, Candy. I just can't let you go by yourself. I love you too much to let you do something like that. It's too dangerous." He runs his hand through her long auburn hair and kisses her forehead. "Marry me, Candy."
Candy raises her head. "I can't, Jeremy. I won't get married just so people won't talk about us traveling together."
"That's not the reason I'm asking you to marry me. The reason Miss Pruitt, is because I love you and I want you to be my wife."
"Oh Jeremy, I love you too! And I want to be your wife. Just not like this. Besides Molly and Christopher haven't gotten use to all the changes yet." Candy puts her finger on Jeremy's lips and traces them. "Please Jeremy. Give me just a little more time. I love you so much. I promise it won't be much longer."
Jeremy takes her hand and kisses her fingertips. "Well, we don't have to decide anything tonight. I love you, Candy." They wrap their arms around each other and enjoy a long, deep passionate kiss. They watch the moon and stars, with some more kissing thrown in, before heading back to the dormitory to say goodnight.
As the days pass, Jeremy still can't persuade Candy not to go to New Bedford alone. Clancey has returned and is ready to set sail for San Francisco in a matter of days. Now Molly and Christopher are rebelling by refusing to go back to New Bedford. Candy is beside herself as she is talking to Lottie in the saloon. "Lottie, I just don't know what to do any more. Jeremy's mad at me. Molly and Christopher are mad at me. Lottie, tell me what to do!"
Lottie pats Candy's hand. "I can't tell you what to do, Candy. That's a decision you're going to have to make on your own. I can however, give you some suggestions."
"Oh Lottie, I'll listen to all the suggestions you have."
Lottie gets up and goes behind the bar, returning with a soda pop for Candy and a beer for herself. Setting them on the table, she sits back down. "Now Candy, why don't you let Jeremy go with you? That will solve most of your problems."
"I would love for Jeremy to go with me, but he just can't go. We would be the talk of the town, not only here in Seattle, but in New Bedford too." She stops and sighs. "People will say we're living in sin," she adds in a loud whisper.
"Candy, people are going to talk regardless. Besides, if you're that worried about what people say, then marry him. I know for a fact, he would marry you right this minute if you'd only say yes."
A big smile comes across Candy's lips. "I know he would and I love him for it. But again, people would talk. They'll say he only married me for the money I inherited. I've already heard the comment that Jeremy will be a rich man if he marries me. What they don't realize, it's not that much money. I only get a third of the estate. Molly and Christopher each get a third also. No, I'm not going to hurt Jeremy's good name. He is such a good honest man. He deserves better."
"Well, that's between you and Jeremy. Now, as for the children not wanting to go back. . .can you honestly blame them? They made that long voyage not too long ago. They just got here and now you want to make them leave again so soon."
"I don't want to, but what else can I do?"
"Let them stay here. You know they'll be safe and well taken care of. Biddie has already said if you let them stay, she'll move into your room. And you know Biddie, she'll mother them to death." Lottie and Candy both laugh. "The whole town will look after them."
"I don't know Lottie. I can't abandon them. People will. . ."
"Candy Pruitt, if you say people will talk one more time, I'm going to take you over my knee."
"Lottie, I. . .," she begins to cry.
"Your problem is you are too concerned with what people will say. Who cares? This is Seattle. We talk, then we forget, and move on to something else. I bet New Bedford is the same way." She takes Candy's hand. "Honey, you're putting too much pressure on yourself. Maybe you need to go over to the church to say a prayer and ask God to show you the way. Then you go find that handsome man of yours and make up. You can't leave with harsh words between you." She pauses. "He loves you, Candy. Don't ever forget that."
Candy dries her tears away. "I know he does and I love Jeremy with all my heart. You're right, Lottie. I do need to talk to him." She rises, hugs Lottie, and rushes for the door. "Thank you Lottie," she says as she walks out and goes to the church to have a little talk with God.
After Candy leaves the church, she feels much better. She is finally at peace and she knows exactly what she has to do. She hurries to the Bolt cabin hoping that Jeremy is back from work.
Jason, Joshua, and Jeremy are almost finished eating supper. In between bites, Josh is trying to talk his brothers into going to Lottie's for a beer. "Come on Jeremy, it'll do you good. It'll take your mind off your problems."
Jeremy sneers, "I have only one problem."
"Yeah, and what is that one problem, dear brother? Or should I say, who is that one problem?" Josh snickers.
Jeremy picks his plate up and walks to the sink. "I just don't know what to do! She won't listen to reason."
They hear Candy banging on the door while yelling, "Jeremy! Jeremy!"
Josh being closest to the door, opens it. As Candy finds Jeremy in her sites and runs to him, Jeremy asks, "Candy, what's wrong?"
Candy throws herself into Jeremy's arms. "Nothing, Jeremy. We need to talk."
Jason and Josh excuse themselves and head for Lottie's. Candy kisses Jeremy. "Oh Jeremy, I'm so sorry."
"Well okay, I don't know exactly what you're apologizing for, but I do like the way you say I'm sorry," he chuckles. Pulling away from Candy, he takes her by the hand and leads her over to the big leather chair. He sits and pulls Candy onto his lap. "Now, why don't you tell me what has gotten into you."
"Well, I had a talk with Lottie. That helped, but she told me to go to the church and have a talk with God. I did, and Jeremy, afterwards I knew you were right. I want you to go with me. We can't be apart that long. And if you're still talking to me when we get back to Seattle, I'm going to marry you as soon as possible." She pauses for a second. "I love you, Jeremy Bolt." She gives him a tender kiss. "Well, aren't you going to say anything?"
Jeremy laughs. "I haven't had a chance." He kisses her cheek. "Candy, why can't we get married now, before we leave?"
"Have you forgotten that Reverend Adams has left town for a two week conference? And I want you to be sure you still want to marry me after this trip. You may change your mind."
"Not a chance. I'd marry you no matter what. I love you, Candy. You are my life." His lips cover her lips. They sit kissing and holding on to each other.
"Jeremy?"
"Yes?"
"What do you think I should do about Molly and Christopher? They don't want to go. Lottie says I should let them stay here. Her, Biddie, and the Brides will take care of them."
"Candy, that has to be your decision. I will tell you that Jason and Josh will look out for them too. They will probably be so spoiled when we return, they'll stink." They laugh. "When you get back to the dormitory, sit them down, and ask them again what they want to do. Then go from there."
"Jeremy, will you come with me? To talk to them. Please!"
"All right, Candy, I'll come with you, but you have to do most of the talking since this is your decision to make." She nods her head and starts to rise from his lap. He pulls her back down. "Wait a minute. We don't have to leave right this minute, do we? I'm enjoying this."
"Oh Jeremy!"
The day of departure has finally arrived. Jeremy and Candy are dockside saying goodbyes to everyone, their luggage already on board. Candy has made the decision to let the children stay in Seattle. It was not an easy decision, but she feels it is right for them. "Now Molly, Christopher, you be good. And listen to Aunt Biddie and Aunt Lottie. Oh, I'm going to miss you both so much," she tells them as she hugs and kisses them.
Jeremy is standing with his brothers who all have misty eyes. "Well, I guess this is it," Jeremy tearfully says.
"Take care little brother. We'll miss you," Jason replies as he gives Jeremy a big bear hug.
Josh then hugs his little brother. "Be safe Jeremy. Come home soon."
Jeremy, who is trying his best to not let any tears fall, says, "I'm really going to miss both of you. Do you realize we've never been a part for this long? I know I don't say it enough, but I love you both." Jason and Josh return their love.
The brothers walk over to tell Candy goodbye. Jason gives her a kiss on the cheek. "Take care, Candy. Don't worry about the children. We'll take good care of them."
"I know you will, but this is harder than I thought it would be. Thank you all so much," Candy says.
Josh hugs Candy. "Be safe, Candy. Take good care of my little brother. Take good care of each other."
Candy replies, "You know I will."
"Come on, young Bolt. Wez' losin' the tide," Clancey yells. He starts giving orders to cast off to his crew.
Jeremy grabs Candy's arm and says, "Come on, we have to get on board."
Jason holds his fist out. Josh places his hand on top of Jason's fist. Jeremy puts his hand on top of Josh's. Dropping hands, Jeremy and Candy rush on board right before the gangplank is lifted and the Shamus O'Flynn sets sail to San Francisco.
A young couple walk up beside Candy and Jeremy. They all stand there waving goodbye to the friends and family they are leaving behind. Candy glances over at the couple and gasps. She nudges Jeremy and exclaims, " Rachel! Sully! What are you doing here?"
Rachel and Sully begin laughing. "We're going to New Bedford with you. We're your chaperones."
they say as all four hug and shake hands.
Candy is delighted. "Why didn't you tell us you were coming with us?"
"We weren't sure until last night. Earlier I heard Helen and Maude talking about how disgraceful it was for you and Jeremy to go off by yourselves. I told them you would have chaperones and I was one of them. When I got home, I discussed it with Sully and he agreed. All we had to do was talk to Jason and Allyn about getting time off. They gave us their blessings, so here we are!"
"I'm glad you're here, but we really don't care what those two busybodies have to say," Jeremy says.
Sully chuckles. "Being chaperones isn't the only reason we're going. Rachel wants me to meet her family as well. So this works out fine for us."
After standing there talking for awhile, they decide to go to their cabins and meet up again at supper. Later after supper, Jeremy and Candy take a long leisurely stroll before they go back to their cabins. Jeremy inspects Candy's cabin to be sure she will be safe. "You know, you'd be a lot safer if I stayed in here with you," he teased.
"But who would protect me from you?" she giggles as she slaps his arm and gives him a quick kiss.
"Ha Ha, very funny." He grabs her and takes her in his arms as he starts kissing her lips and moving down to her neck. "Do you really want to be protected from me?" he asks as he continues to kiss her.
"No, I don't. Oh Jeremy, can we make it all the way to New Bedford and back home to Seattle without giving in to temptation?"
"I don't know. We've not even been gone a whole day, and look at us." He stops almost in a panic. "Candy, I've got to go or we're going to get in trouble." He turns away from her. "I'll see you tomorrow," he says as he hurriedly heads for the door.
Before Jeremy goes out the door, Candy calls out to him. "Jeremy, I love you!" she giggles. "Goodnight!"
Jeremy turns only his head towards her. "I love you, too. Goodnight!" And with that said, he slams the door and goes next door to his cabin. He lays down on his bed and thinks to himself, Oh my God! What was I thinking coming with Candy. I know I came to keep her safe, but I wasn't thinking about how hard this was going to be not to give in to our desires. I want her so badly. He takes several long deep breaths. Well Bolt, you've just got to control yourself better. He lays there thinking of his beautiful Candy until he falls asleep.
Candy puts her nightgown on and sits on the edge of the bed brushing her hair. She does some thinking of her own. Oh, I am so glad Jeremy came with me, but I really don't know if it was a good idea. This is going to be so hard. I want him so badly. Well Miss Pruitt, you're going to have to do better. You can't lose control. Candy crawls into bed thinking of her handsome Jeremy until she falls asleep.
For the next couple of days Jeremy and Candy make a point of not being alone together except when they take their evening stroll. One night on their stroll, Jeremy stops and grasps the side rail. Candy, knowing he is bothered by something, places her hand on top of his. "Jeremy, what's wrong? You're quieter than usual."
"Candy, this is crazy. I've had enough of this. We can't keep avoiding each other. I miss you. I miss our talks."
"I agree, Jeremy. I miss you too."
Jeremy takes her in his arms and his lips cover hers. They stop at two kisses. "See, we can control ourselves. Right?" he chuckles.
"Right," she giggles. "I bet Rachel and Sully are having a good laugh about our behavior. I hope you don't mind, but I confided in Rachel about our, uh, you know."
Jeremy laughs, "You mean our urges? No, I don't mind because I confided in Sully as well."
"You did? What did Sully say? Any advice?"
"He said to take an ice cold bath. I told him I already do that. If I take many more, I'll turn into a prune." They both laugh.
They spend a little more time on deck before returning to their cabins. Candy reaches for the door handle. "Jeremy, would you like to come in for a little while?" She turns to face him.
"Are you sure, Candy?"
Candy places her hand on his cheek and looks into his beautiful blue eyes. "Yes, I'm sure."
"All right, but just for a little while." He opens the door and they go inside. Jeremy is unsure of himself. He thinks, What do I do? I know what I want to do, but I'm afraid we'll lose control again. His thoughts are interrupted by Candy speaking to him.
"Jeremy, did you hear me?"
"Uh, what Candy? I'm sorry, I was thinking about something."
Candy giggles. "I asked you if you would like to sit down. I'm afraid there's only one chair. You can have it and I'll sit over here on the bed."
"All right," he answers as he sits down. He looks at Candy sitting on the bed and his mind begins to wander. She is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. It's no wonder I can't think of anything but her. If I could sit there on the bed with her, I'd take her in my arms and kiss her so passionately. We'd finally lay back on the bed and explore each other. I. . . his thoughts are interrupted again.
"Jeremy!"
"Uh, did you say something?"
"Jeremy, if you'd rather be somewhere else, then go," she says as she drops her head down.
Jeremy gets up and walks over to her. Taking her arm, he helps her to stand. "I'm sorry, Candy. There's nowhere I'd rather be than right here with you."
"Well, you sure don't act like it."
"It's just that I can't stay focused. My mind keeps thinking of what I would like to be doing," he blushes. "With you."
"I understand completely. I have some of those naughty thoughts about you, too."
"You do? Hmm, maybe I should go," he says as he turns and heads for the door.
"Jeremy Bolt! Are you going to just leave and not kiss me goodnight?"
He turns and they fall into each others arms, their lips meeting. "Goodnight, Miss Pruitt. Pleasant dreams." He kisses her hand. "I love you."
"Goodnight, Mr. Bolt. I'll see you in the morning." She kisses his cheek. "I love you." Jeremy leaves and Candy locks her door to get ready for bed.
When the Shamus O"Flynn docks in San Francisco, they say their goodbyes to Clancey, gather their luggage, and head for the hotel. After finding their rooms, they freshen up and meet in the dining room for a late breakfast. Jeremy and Sully talk about how they're going to get to New Bedford.
"Candy, I think Sully and me are going to go see if we can find passage for us. Why don't you and Rachel go shopping? Just don't wander too far from the hotel."
"Jeremy, Rachel and I will be fine. Don't worry," she says as she pats his cheek.
They go out into the lobby. Jeremy takes Candy's hand and kisses her fingertips. "Candy, do as I say and don't go too far from here. Please." She starts to protest when Jeremy stops her. "Please, Candy. Just do this for me. I promise when we get back, I'll take you wherever you want to go. All right?"
"I don't know what you're so worried about, but all right, I'll stay close by. Just for you."
"Thank you," he says. They give each other a tender kiss, while the Sullivans do the same. The men go in one direction while the women go in another.
When they all meet up again, the men tell the ladies what they found out. There is a ship that leaves in three days for Boston, New Bedford, and several other ports. It will take about six months to get there. Another option would be to take a train and stagecoach route across the country. It would be a rougher trip, but it would only take about two months, maybe less.
"Only two months! I vote for that way," Candy laughs overjoyed. "What about you Rachel?"
"I agree with Candy. What do you men think?" Rachel asks.
Sully is hesitant at first to speak up, so Jeremy gives his opinion. "I like the two months, but it is rougher and more dangerous."
"And the train leaves for St. Louis tomorrow at one o'clock," Sully adds.
After much discussion, they settle on the train and stagecoach. The men leave to book passage for them while the ladies go upstairs to freshen up before they meet the men for an early supper and some entertainment in the theater district.
The next day they board the train to begin their long journey. At some places, there is no train service going East, so they have to take a stagecoach to the next town that has train service. It is a rough and dirty trip, but they are thankful they are getting closer to their destination. The ladies are excited to see New Bedford again.
It takes approximately two months to arrive in New Bedford. There has been little change in the town since the Brides left, except there are a few more men around. The weary travelers can't wait to get to their homes and take a bath, eat a hot meal, and get a good nights sleep. Coming by train and stagecoach may have been faster, but it also was more tiresome and dirtier. Especially the stagecoach.
Rachel takes Candy aside and asks, "Candy, are you sure you don't want Sully and me to stay at your house? You know, to keep everyone from talking about you and Jeremy."
"No thanks Rachel, we'll be fine. If people want to talk, then let them talk. After we leave here, I'll never see any of these people again anyways." After Jeremy and Candy retrieve their luggage, they tell the Sullivans goodbye and they all promise to meet up again in a few days for some social time. Arriving at the Pruitt homestead, Candy stands at the walk leading up to the house, just staring and remembering.
Jeremy puts his arm around her and squeezes her shoulder. "Are you all right?" Candy nods and bites at her lip while she blinks back tears. "I know this has to be hard for you," Jeremy says as he kisses her cheek.
"It is hard, but you being here with me, makes it a little easier. I'm all right." Taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly, Candy says, "Let's go in." She smiles as she leads the way inside. Everything still looks the same way as it did when she left almost two years ago. They climb the stairs and Candy shows Jeremy to her bedroom. "You can stay in my old room and I'll stay in Mother's room."
"Candy, I don't want to take your room from you."
"It's all right, Jeremy. It hasn't really been my room for a long time. Besides I thought maybe you wouldn't be comfortable staying in Mother's room, and Grandpa's room, well, I guess we need to keep it empty just in case he comes back. There's Molly and Christopher's room with bunkbeds, but that won't work. I want you to rest good while you're here."
"Thank you, but if you change your mind. . ."
"I won't change my mind. Now you go on in and get settled. After we both have a hot bath, I guess we'll have to walk back to town to get some food. Good thing it's only a short walk away. I'll see you in a little while." She goes down the hall but hesitates at her Mother's door. Taking a deep breath she goes in.
After a while, Candy goes to ask Jeremy if he is ready for his bath. She knocks lightly and receiving no answer, she slowly opens the door peeking inside. Jeremy is laying on the bed asleep. She quietly walks over and sits on the side of the bed. A big sigh escapes from her. With her hand, she brushes his hair back from his face. "You are so handsome. I love you with all my heart," she whispers. She grabs a blanket from the bottom of the bed, covering Jeremy. Bending over, she kisses him on the forehead and walks back to her room, deciding to go ahead and take her bath first while Jeremy sleeps.
After relaxing in a hot bubble bath, she washes her body and hair quickly. She puts on her robe, wraps her hair in a towel turban style, and hoping Jeremy is awake, she goes ahead and draws his bath water. Candy proceeds upstairs, stopping at Jeremy's door. Hearing some movement inside, she knocks.
"Come in."
Opening the door, she sees that Jeremy is up and has laid a change of clothes on the bed. "Well hello, sleepyhead. I hope you had a good nap."
"Yes, I did, thank you very much," he chuckles.
"I just wanted to let you know I fixed a hot bath for you. You better hurry before it gets cold," she says as she turns to leave.
"Candy, wait up."
"What? You need something?"
Wrapping his arms around her he answers, "Yes I do. I need this," he replies as he covers her mouth with his. "This is the first kiss I've had all day." He hugs her tightly. "Oh Candy, you smell so good."
"Oh Jeremy, you smell so, uh, bad." They both burst out laughing. "I'm sorry. I just said it."
"No, no you are just being honest. To tell you the truth, I can smell myself and it's not a pleasant smell. I stink," he chuckles. "I'll go take that bath right now." One quick kiss later, he hurries downstairs.
After a shave, a relaxing soak, and a good scrubbing, he thinks, "Now Miss Pruitt, how do I smell?" Since he doesn't have a robe, he wraps his towel around his waist and climbs the stairs. In the hallway, he meets Candy who is on her way downstairs to check out the kitchen supplies. They are both startled at seeing each other. Candy stands staring at Jeremy with her mouth gaped open. She can't move or speak. Neither can Jeremy.
Finally, Jeremy finds his voice. Being embarrassed he says, "I'm sorry Candy. I didn't know I'd run into you like this." He scurries by her, runs into his room, and slams the door.
Candy is still frozen in her tracks. Suddenly, she snaps out of it and smiles. "Oh Jeremy, I'm not sorry, not one single bit. I think I just got a glimpse of Heaven," she whispers to herself while giggling.
Jeremy comes downstairs to find Candy and apologize. He finds her outside sitting in the swing on the front porch. Sitting down beside her, he takes her hand and squeezes it. "Candy, I'm sorry about what happened earlier. I hope you're not still upset."
Candy puts her finger on Jeremy's lips. "I was never upset, Jeremy and I'm not sorry it happened. I rather enjoyed it. After the shock that is. And don't you be sorry either." She gives him a soft kiss. He gives her that big crooked smile that she loves. They sit enjoying being together holding hands, Candy's head on his shoulder.
"Candy, I don't know about you, but I'm hungry," he laughs as his stomach growls loudly.
"I think I could eat something. I'll take you to what use to be my favorite restaurant. I hope it's still there."
Arriving in town, Jeremy says, "Before we eat, we should send a telegram to Jason and Josh."
"Oh you're right. I completely forgot about doing that." They hurry to the telegraph office where Candy writes down the message as her and Jeremy compose it together. After it is sent, Jeremy tells the telegrapher to send any replies to the Pruitt house and gives him the address.
They go to the restaurant and have a steak dinner. "This is delicious, Candy. I see why this place is your favorite," he says as he resumes eating.
"I'm glad you like it." She takes her napkin and wipes his chin. She giggles, "Honestly Jeremy, sometimes you're like a little boy. I'm glad you're enjoying your meal though."
"Ha Ha, very funny. I think this steak is better than Lottie's. Don't you tell her I said that," he chuckles.
As they exit the restaurant, Candy takes his arm. They stroll to the market and buy enough food to last them for a couple of days. After putting the food away in the pantry, they go back to sit in the swing. Jeremy puts his arm around Candy's shoulder and she lays her head on his shoulder.
"What's the plan for tomorrow, Candy?"
"Well, we need to go see Reverend Morton since he's been handling things so far. I guess what we do next depends on what he tells us." She sighs. "Jeremy, do you mind coming with me and helping me with all this stuff?" She turns her head slightly so she can see his face.
"No, I don't mind. That's what I'm here for- to help you through this anyway I can." He kisses her forehead.
She lays her hand on his chest. "Oh Jeremy," she begins sounding exhausted. "I'm so glad you're here. I would be lost without you."
"I'm glad I'm here too." He kisses her lips.
"Jeremy, there's something I need to tell you about Reverend Morton. . ." she begins before being interrupted.
"Excuse me, Sir, uh, Ma'am," a young boy says as he stands on the porch in front of them. "I have a telegram for a Jeremy Bolt or a Candy Pruitt."
Jeremy holds his hand out for the telegram. "I'm Jeremy Bolt. Thank you." The boy starts to leave as Jeremy digs in his trouser pocket and takes out a coin. "Here, this is for you."
"Thanks, Mr. Bolt." He goes on his way.
Jeremy eagerly opens the envelope. He reads: "Glad you're safe and well We are all well Molly and Christopher are a delight Miss you both Come home soon Jeremy smiles at Candy. "I told you they would stink when we get back home," he chuckles.
Candy laughs. "Yes, you did. I just hope they don't smell as bad as. . ." she stops abruptly, her hand going up over her mouth.
"What? Finish it Candy! As bad as me. Is that what you were going to say?" He acts hurt and angry, but inside he is laughing at the expression on her face.
"I'm sorry, Jeremy. That wasn't very nice. I was just trying to be funny. Please forgive me," she begs.
Jeremy can't hold in his laughter anymore. He almost doubles over, he is laughing so hard. "Jeremy Bolt!" she shouts as she stands up. She starts to leave, but Jeremy grabs her arm. "Jeremy Bolt, you let go of me."
Standing now, Jeremy wraps his arms around her. "Nothing doing. I'll never let you go. You belong to me." He places his lips on hers causing her to settle down and put her arms around his neck. After several more kisses, Jeremy whispers in her ear. "I think we better go inside before we give the neighbors something to talk about."
"I agree."
They go inside and up the staircase, stopping at Candy's door. "I'll see you tomorrow morning, Miss Pruitt. Pleasant dreams. I love you."
"Good night, Mr. Bolt. I love you more."
"I seriously doubt that," he says lovingly.
They give each other a deep passionate kiss. Reluctantly, they part and go inside their rooms to retire for the night and have sweet dreams of each other.
The next morning, Jeremy is awakened by the smell of food cooking. He throws the covers off and crawls out of bed. Stretching to get some of the stiffness out of his back and arms, he reaches for his clothes. He runs a comb through his lush head of brown hair, then he rushes downstairs to see what all Candy has fixed. He is starving.
Upon entering the kitchen, he sees Candy with her back to him stirring something on the stove. He quietly walks up behind her encircling her waist with his arms. "Good morning, my beautiful Miss Pruitt. Something sure smells good." He gives her a quick kiss on the cheek.
"My, you must feel good today. Sleep well?" she giggles.
"I slept very well. I don't think I woke up at all during the night. Now, I'm ready to tackle the day ahead of us. Can I do anything to help with breakfast?"
"All right. You can set the table, then have a seat because we're ready to eat." She gives a small laugh while she begins to serve up the food and place it on the table.
Jeremy holds her chair out for her, then seats himself. "This looks delicious, Candy. Is this what I have to look forward to every morning after we're married?"
"Yes, it most certainly is. I can't wait to cook for you every day."
He takes her hand, squeezes it, then raises it to kiss her fingertips. "That makes two of us," he chuckles.
They continue to hold hands as Jeremy says the blessing. "For this food we are about to receive, may we truly be thankful. Amen." They eat and talk about what they plan to do today.
When finished eating and cleaning up the kitchen, Candy bites at her lip. "Jeremy, there's something I need to tell you. I tried last night, but got interrupted."
Jeremy says, "I'm sorry, Candy. I do remember you saying something about Reverend Morton. Is it a life or death situation that needs me to know right now?"
"No, but. . ." she answers.
"Well then, can you tell me later? We really need to be going. I'd like to go get this over with before we meet Sully and Rachel for lunch. Then we can enjoy the rest of the day together, just the two of us. I'll be right back. I need to go get ready." He heads for the stairs.
"But Jeremy, I. . ."
"It's all right, Candy. We'll talk later." He gives her a quick kiss on her cheek and practically runs up the stairs.
Jeremy knocks on the door of the church office. Reverend Morton opens the door and is startled to see Candy standing there. "Candy, I mean Miss Pruitt, I'm delighted to see you. I didn't know you were back in town." He gives her a hug and kiss. Jeremy thinks the kiss is a bit much and a little too long.
Candy's face turns red. She looks at Jeremy with eyes that say, "Please Jeremy. Don't do anything foolish." She takes Jeremy's arm and says, "Uh, Reverend Morton, this is my fiance', Jeremy Bolt. We just arrived here in New Bedford yesterday." She nervously smiles at Jeremy while he shakes hands with Reverend Morton.
Jeremy stands in silence sizing up Reverend Morton as Candy and the good Reverend talk. I was expecting a much older man, someone the age of our pastors, Reverend Gattings or Reverend Adams, instead of someone my own age. Look at him. He's young, tall, dark, and. . .do I dare say it. . . handsome. Jeremy bites at his lip and gets this uneasy feeling. There's something about the way he's looking at Candy that I don't like. And why is Candy so nervous all of a sudden? They're acting like they're more than just Pastor and former parishioner. Heck, like more than just friends even. What's going. . . His thoughts are interrupted.
"Jeremy, Andrew asked you a question," Candy says shaking his arm to get his attention.
"Uh, what Candy? I'm sorry, I guess my mind wandered off." Hey, when did Reverend Morton become Andrew? He looks at Reverend Morton and asks, "What question?"
"I ask if you mind if I take Candy to the lawyer's office. There's no need for both of us to be there.'
Jeremy is stunned. This guy works fast, he thinks. There's no way I'm just going to step aside and let him help himself to my girl. Jeremy shakes his head. "I didn't come all this way to just sit around. I came to help Candy and I intend to do just that. Now, I'll take Candy to the lawyer's office and you can tag along if you think it's necessary."
Candy is embarrassed. "Jeremy, Andrew was just offering to help." She looks at Andrew and says, "I'm sorry." She then gives Jeremy a stern look.
Reverend Morton smiles at Candy as he takes her hand in his. "It's all right, Candy. I'll be happy to tag along as Mr. Bolt puts it," he chuckles as Jeremy sneers. "Shall we go?"
All three of them walk down the street to the lawyer's office. Jeremy can tell that Candy is upset with him. He watches Andrew take Candy's arm as they walk and she doesn't remove it. Before they enter the office, Jeremy bites his lip and holds his hand out to the Reverend. "I want to apologize for my behavior earlier. I guess I'm still a little tired from the trip. And I didn't know you and Candy were such close, uh, friends is it?" He looks at Candy and sees her biting her lip. Uh oh, I think I'm still in trouble. What does she expect from me?
Reverend Morton shakes Jeremy's hand. "That's quite all right. I completely understand. Now, shall we go inside?" Andrew takes Candy's arm and leads the way.
After spending the whole morning with the lawyer, they get the paperwork filled out. Jeremy puts his feelings aside and really helps Candy with her decisions. He gives her a lot of sound advice and she is greatly appreciative. She decides to rent the house for now just in case her Grandpa comes back since he may want to live there. If he is not back in a year, the lawyer will sell the homeplace and send a check to Candy. The bank accounts are closed and a check is drafted for her, Molly, and Christopher. Candy wants a few pieces of furniture sent to Seattle for her and Jeremy's new house. Candy is in great spirits when they leave the office. It seems like she has forgiven Jeremy. Reverend Morton doesn't seem too happy though.
"Candy, we better leave if we're going to meet Sully and Rachel on time." Jeremy is glad to be leaving Andrew's company.
"All right, Jeremy, I guess we better," she says with a big smile as she takes Jeremy's arm. She turns to Andrew. "Thank you Andrew for all your help. Maybe we'll see you again before we leave."
Andrew takes her hand. "Candy, I was hoping to take you out for a late lunch today. I was wanting to tell you about your Mother's last days."
"Oh Andrew, were you with Mother when she passed?"
"Yes Candy, I was. I visited her every day the last two weeks before she left us. We had some great talks. Mostly about you."
Candy tears up. "I do want to hear about your visits. Could we possibly do this tomorrow?"
"I'm sorry. Tomorrow is not going to work for me. I'll be tied up in meetings all day. I'm afraid it has to be now. I don't know when I'll be free to meet with you again."
Candy looks at Jeremy and begins biting her lip again. "Jeremy, do you mind if I bow out of our lunch with the Sullivans? I do so want to hear about Mother's last days."
Jeremy puts his arm around her shoulders. "I know you do, Candy. I want you to hear about them too. Why don't I come with you?" He kisses her cheek.
"But what about Rachel and Sully?" she asks.
"They'll understand. Maybe. . ."
Andrew interrupts Jeremy. "There's no need for you to come with us. Why don't you run along and have your lunch with the Sullivans? Candy and I will have lunch and you can meet up with us after you finish with your friends."
Jeremy knows what Andrew is up to. "No, that's all right. I want to be here for Candy. After all, she is my fiancee'."
"Yes, I am well aware of that fact," the Reverend says with a frown. "I promise Candy will be in good hands, Mr. Bolt. Unless, you don't trust her."
Jeremy is shocked. "I always trust Candy to do the right thing. Sometimes it's the people she's with that I don't trust." Jeremy gives Andrew a stern look.
Candy sees that Jeremy is getting upset and when he gets upset, he easily loses his temper. She puts her hand on his arm and says," Jeremy, may I speak to you alone, please?"
They walk a good distance away so Andrew can't hear them. "Jeremy, please calm down. You know you were quite rude to Andrew just now."
Jeremy is surprised at Candy. "Me? I know what he's up to Candy. He's using your Mother to get you alone so he can get close to you. Can't you see that?"
"I don't see it that way, Jeremy. Now, I'm going with Andrew. I have to hear about Mother's last days. I want you to go have lunch with Rachel and Sully, then I'll meet you back at the house when I'm finished."
"I guess you don't care what I want!"
"Jeremy, you're acting like a child."
"And you're acting inconsiderate to the man you supposedly love."
"I can't talk to you when you're like this. I'll see you at home later." With that, she goes back over to Andrew. Jeremy watches as she takes Andrew's arm and they walk to the restaurant he and Candy had eaten at just the night before.
Jeremy arrives at the Sullivans and tells them some of what has happened. "Instead of going out, why don't I fix us some sandwiches," Rachel says.
"I'm not in the mood to eat, but I do need to talk, if you don't mind listening," Jeremy replies.
They sit at the table eating their lunch. Even Jeremy eats. Jeremy feels better after talking with Rachel since he needed a woman's perspective on the situation. "I think I'll go see if they're still at the restaurant. I need to apologize to Candy." He sees a vase of daisies on the counter. "Rachel, may I have a daisy? Daisies are Candy's favorite flower."
"Of course, Jeremy. Take all of them if you want."
"No, I only need one. One daisy has a special meaning for us." He takes the daisy, thanks the Sullivans, and leaves for the restaurant.
When he arrives, he doesn't see Candy and Andrew. "Pardon me, but do you know Reverend Morton?" he asks the waiter.
"Yes Sir, I do. He was in here earlier with a lovely young lady."
"How long ago did they leave?"
"Oh, it's been awhile. At least half an hour or more." He pauses. "I did hear him tell the young lady, he had some papers back at the office he wants to show her."
"Yeah, I bet he does," Jeremy mumbles. "Thank you." Jeremy rushes out and walks fast to the church. He's nervous as he enters Andrew's office without knocking. What he sees about floors him. Candy is in Andrew's arms, kissing him. "C-C-Candy?" he stammers.
The kiss ends abruptly with Candy in shock. "Jeremy, it's not what it looks like," she cries.
Jeremy's face is red with anger. "It looks like you're kissing a man that you said you had no feelings for. What a fool I am! I believed you. I trusted you, Candy!" He stands there shaking his head. "And to think I came here to apologize to you. Here's your daisy. It obviously means nothing anymore." He crushes the daisy with his fingers and throws it at her as he stomps out of the room.
Candy runs after him and grabs his arm. "Jeremy, please! He kissed me. I wasn't kissing him."
Jeremy looks at her with so much hurt in his eyes. "This isn't just another Ward Kimberly incident, Candy. I saw you this time, plain as day." He hurries outside and begins walking to he doesn't know where, just somewhere to get away from Candy.
"Jeremy, let's go home and talk."
Jeremy stops and turns toward Candy. "What do we have to talk about, Candy? How you weren't honest with me about your old beau Andy? Or how you led me into an awkward situation, having to watch the two of you together? Or how about ole Andy trying to ditch me so he could have you all to himself? Or maybe how much you seem to enjoy his kisses? Maybe, after seeing him again, you realize how much you love him. Hey, maybe that's the real reason you keep putting me off about marriage. You were hoping Andy would ride in on his white horse and rescue you." Jeremy's face shows anger, hurt, and disappointment. "I'm going back to the house. You can go wherever you want, I don't care. Just leave me the hell alone." He sulks off toward the Pruitt house.
By now, Candy's tears are falling pretty heavily. Candy follows Jeremy home walking at a slower pace. When she gets to the house, she sits in the swing to do some thinking. Oh dear God. What have I done? I hurt the man I truly love by not being open and honest with him. Jeremy is the most honest person I know. Of course, he would be upset with me. Please, don't let me lose him. Please, dear Lord, let him forgive me.
After a good cry, she makes her way into the house. She goes to the washroom and washes her face. Then she heads upstairs for the most important talk of her life.
Knocking on Jeremy's door, she listens. She hears silence. Taking a deep breath, she opens the door. Jeremy is nowhere around, but she does see that his things are still there. Thank God for that, at least, she thinks. She calls his name as she searches the house. As she passes by a window, she looks out on the backyard. There sits Jeremy up against a tree with a bottle of Grandpa's whiskey he found in the pantry.
"Oh Jeremy, I'm sorry," she whispers. Slowly she makes her way outside. When she gets to him, she asks, " Do you mind if I sit down?"
He takes a swallow of whiskey. Without looking at her, he says, "Your house, your yard. Do whatever you want. You always do."
She sits down beside him and begins to bite her lip. "I'm sorry, Jeremy. I should have been honest with you before we left Seattle and told you about Andrew. I did try to tell you last night and this morning. I guess I should have tried harder."
"Doesn't matter." He takes another drink from the bottle. "Nothing matters anymore."
"Jeremy, please don't say that. It does matter. You matter to me." She looks at him and her heart breaks. "Oh Jeremy, how do I make this up to you? I love you. Please don't throw us away," she cries.
Jeremy looks at her with indifference. "Tears won't work this time, Candy. I'm such a fool. I should have known even back on Clancey's old tub, that I'm not what you wanted But no, I believed you. I believed you when you said you loved me," he laughs. "Me! An immature stuttering stupid lumberjack. What would someone like you want with someone like me?" He takes another drink. "Oh by the way. I didn't throw us away. You did that Candy, all by yourself."
Between sobs, Candy pleads. "Please don't talk like that! You're not a stupid lumberjack. I do want you. And only you." She tries to take his hand, but he brushes her hand away.
"Jeremy, listen to me. Andrew and I were kind of like sweethearts. He wanted to marry me, but I knew I didn't love him. When he was out of town for a conference, that's when you and your brothers came here. I saw that as my chance to get out of here before he came back. If I would have stayed, I would probably have married him eventually. Not for love, but for convenience. There weren't any men here, as you know. It was either marry Andrew or be an old spinster. Neither appealed to me, so I wrote him a goodbye letter, and left on your boat."
"Why couldn't you tell me that, Candy? I would have understood."
"I don't know, Jeremy. After I met you, I didn't think of him anymore. Mother wrote to tell me he was courting someone else, so I figured there was no reason to bring it up. I didn't know he still had feelings for me until today."
Jeremy takes another swig from the bottle. "And you realized you had feelings for him too, huh?"
Candy gasps, "Jeremy Bolt, I do not have any feelings for Andrew. I-I-I'm sorry if it looked that way."
"Remember before we left Seattle, you told me and I quote, If you're still talking to me when we get back to Seattle, I'm going to marry you as soon as possible." He looks into her eyes. "Is Andy the reason you thought I may not talk to you anymore?"
"I honestly don't know why I worded it that way. It wasn't because of Andrew, I promise."
"Candy, you made me feel like nothing. You took his side on everything. He was touching you and you didn't say anything. You let him hug and kiss you. Not once, mind you, but twice. Maybe there were more, I don't know. You seemed to be enjoying yourself. I didn't hear you tell him no, but you sure can say no to me. Oh, and how many times did you scold me like I was a mere child? I'm not a child, Candy. I'm a grown man with feelings and a heart that can. . .Ah, forget it." He goes to take another drink from the bottle, but seeing that it's empty, gives it a toss against a tree, breaking it into many pieces. He gets up and walks toward the house.
"Jeremy, where are you going? We're not through talking about this." Candy follows him into the house, catching up to him at the staircase. "Jeremy, it's good that we're talking. Getting everything out in the open. Please, let's finish talking about this. I love you."
Jeremy just looks at her and goes upstairs. Candy drops on the stairs and sobs.
After crying all she can, Candy goes into the kitchen and begins to make them something to eat for supper. When it's ready, she fixes Jeremy a tray and takes it to his room. She knocks on the door. She hears an angry, "What?"
Opening the door, she sees Jeremy laying on the bed staring at the ceiling. "Jeremy, I brought you some supper."
Without taking his eyes off the ceiling, he replies, "I don't want anything."
"Jeremy, you need to eat something. Please." He doesn't answer. Candy sets the tray on the small table beside the bed. Before walking out the door, she says, "Jeremy, I. . .Eat something, please."
She goes back to the kitchen and begins cleaning up. When finished, she picks up the last dish she washed and throws it at the window, breaking both the dish and window. Going outside, she sits in the swing to think. An hour or so later, she goes into the parlor to write Jeremy a note, just in case he would care where she went. She props it on the kitchen table and leaves.
When Rachel answers the door, she sees Candy's red puffy eyes and knows something is terribly wrong. "Candy, what happened? Are you all right? Is it Jeremy?"
"Oh Rachel, I've made a complete mess of my life." She proceeds to tell her about everything that happened. "I just don't know what to do. Jeremy is so hurt. I'm afraid we're through."
"Candy, Jeremy loves you. I can't believe he would end things like this. Yes, he's hurt, but give him some time. I'm sure he'll realize that you didn't mean to deceive him."
"I don't know, Rachel. I've never seen Jeremy like this before. It's like he doesn't care about anything anymore, especially me. He won't even look at me."
"He just needs time to think. Don't give up. Where's the Candy Pruitt l know? She would never give up this soon."
"I'm afraid that Candy Pruitt is gone," Candy says as she wipes her eyes. "Without Jeremy, I just don't have the will to go on. How can I live without him? How can I live in Seattle knowing he's so close but yet so far away? Oh, Rachel, I just want to die!" she sobs.
"Candy Pruitt, you stop talking like that right this minute. You go home and get a good nights rest. Things may look different in the morning," Rachel tries to comfort her. "Would it help if Sully talked to Jeremy? I know he would if you want him to."
Shaking her head, Candy replies. "Frankly, I don't know what would help. Maybe it's better to just leave him alone for now. Thank you though."
"Well, if you change your mind, we'll be glad to help ."
"I know and thank you. I guess I better get back. I don't know why though. He probably doesn't even know I'm gone. I'll talk to you later," Candy says as she hugs Rachel and leaves.
When Candy arrives home, she sits in the swing again. After much soul searching, she goes inside and notices that her note is still where she left it. He really doesn't care anymore. How could I treat him like I did? I don't blame him for hating me. I've made up my mind. I know what I have to do.
Candy locks the doors and climbs the stairs. She knocks on Jeremy's door. Not hearing anything, she quietly opens the door. Jeremy is still laying on the bed staring at the ceiling, his supper untouched. "Jeremy, I just wanted to say goodnight." She bites her lip and takes a deep breath before continuing. "You were right. I should have stopped Andrew at the first kiss. I don't know why I didn't. Maybe because he's a preacher, and you don't tell a preacher no. I just know I'm so sorry for my actions. I understand why you hate me. I hate myself. I never meant to hurt you." She turns to leave, then stops. "Just in case you might care, I've made a decision. I'm going back to Seattle as soon as possible. I know you don't want to travel home with me and that's okay. I'm going to move with Molly and Christopher to somewhere new. I'll try to be gone before you return home." Tears start falling. "I'm so sorry," she cries. "Goodnight." She runs from the room slamming the door.
Jeremy hasn't moved. Hearing the door slam., he whispers, "Don't hate you Candy. I love you."
The next morning, Candy is in the kitchen fixing a small breakfast. She needs to hurry so she can go into town and make travel arrangements. As she sits down to eat, she hears footsteps. Jeremy is standing in the doorway with his hands in his pockets. "Hi," he says shyly. He reminds of her the shy, insecure young boy of when they first met.
"Hello. I'm afraid I didn't fix much for breakfast. Only oatmeal. Sit down and I'll get you some." She rises and starts for the stove.
"Candy, maybe later. Can we talk?"
"Of course," she replies.
Jeremy takes her elbow and leads her into the parlor where they sit on the settee. Candy keeps her head down, not looking at Jeremy or anything else in the room.
Jeremy is nervous and his hands are sweaty. He rubs them on his brown corduroy trousers. "Look Candy. I'm sorry about everything. I was hurt and scared of losing you. I know that's no excuse, but that's all I've got."
"No, Jeremy. You have nothing to be sorry about. It was all me. I take all the blame for hurting you and ruining what we had together. I'm so ashamed of how I acted. I'm sorry."
"No, I deserve some of the blame too. I could have handled things better."
"I should have told you about Andrew, I should have slapped Andrew when he kissed me, I should have treated you better. There's so many things I should have done but didn't. I understand now how I made you feel. I will never forgive myself for hurting you," Candy cries as tears fall silently down her face and drop onto her dress.
He takes her hand and squeezes it. "When I saw him kiss you, I wanted to punch him in the face. But you can't hit a preacher." He pauses. "Can you?" he nervously chuckles, then gets serious again. "But the worst part was when you didn't stop him. I thought you wanted him to kiss you."
"I know I should have stopped him, but I was so shocked. I'm afraid I didn't handle the situation very well. I'm sorry Jeremy." She wipes her eyes. "Jeremy, I honestly wasn't kissing him back. I don't know what happened to make him do that. We were just standing there talking when all of a sudden, he grabbed me and kissed me. Then you showed up."
Jeremy gets up and walks to the window. He puts his hand on the casing and stares out the window trying to collect his thoughts. Without turning around, he says, "Candy, I need you to be honest with me and with yourself. Do you love him?"
"No, Jeremy. I have never loved him. I hope you can believe me."
Jeremy swallows hard before asking his next question. "Do you. . . Do you love me?" his voice breaks.
Candy walks up behind Jeremy, placing her hand on his back. "Oh yes, Jeremy. I love you so very much. I always will." She hesitates before continuing. "That's why I'm leaving. So I won't bring you anymore pain. I hope someday you can forgive me and not hate me." She breaks down and starts to run from the room.
Jeremy grabs her. "No candy! You can't go." He wraps his arms around her as tears spill from his eyes. "I love you, Candy. So much. We have to fix this. I don't want to spend the rest of my life without you." He places his lips over hers.
"Oh Jeremy. I want that too. I love you." She runs her fingers through his hair. Parting from him, she looks into his teary, beautiful blue eyes. "Can you forgive me?"
"I already have." He takes her hand and they walk back to the settee. "Candy, why would Andy kiss you right at the same time I show up? It seems to me like he knew I was there and kissed you just as I opened the door. What kind of preacher would do that?"
"I agree, Jeremy. He told me about Mother's last days, their talks, Now I wonder if what he told me is true. He could have just told me what he thought I wanted to hear."
Candy lays her head on Jeremy's shoulder and kisses it. "I thought I would never get to do that again." They both laugh.
Jeremy's stomach growls loudly. "Come on," Candy tells him as she pulls him towards the door. "I'll fix you a hot breakfast. You haven't eaten since lunch yesterday. You must be starving."
"Wait!" He stops her. "Candy, so we're good? You'll still be my wife?"
"I will, if you still want me to."
"I do more than anything in this world." They kiss and go into the kitchen. Candy takes a pan and some eggs to the stove. "No need to fix more. I'll just eat the oatmeal you've already made."
"You'll do no such thing. It won't take long to fry some eggs and warm up the biscuits and ham."
While Candy gets busy cooking, Jeremy notices the broken window. "What happened there?"
Looking sheepishly, Candy laughs. "I'm afraid I lost my temper last night and threw a dish through it. I'll hire someone to fix it before I leave."
Jeremy looks startled. "You're not still planning on leaving without me, are you?"
"No, I'm never going to leave you." She gives him a kiss on his cheek. "I guess you're stuck with me."
"Good. No need to hire anyone. I'll fix the window," Jeremy says.
"Thank you."
"I thought I heard something last night. I didn't know what it was. Little did I know that your Pruitt temper was stirred up," he chuckles.
While they are eating and talking, they hear a knock at the door. "Wonder who that is. I'll get it," Jeremy says as he rises from his chair.
Opening the door, Jeremy is astounded at seeing Reverend Andrew Morton holding a bouquet of red roses. "You! I should have known." Looking at the roses, Jeremy can't resist saying, "Roses. Andy, you shouldn't have. But I can't accept them, what would people think?"
Andrew draws himself up straight. "Mr. Bolt. . ." he begins.
"Lighten up, Andy. I'm just teasing you. I know you're here to see Candy." Turning his head towards the kitchen, Jeremy yells, "Candy, it's for you!" He glares at Andrew.
Catching a glimpse of Andrew, Candy knows what she must do. "Who is it Sweetheart?" she asks as she walks up next to Jeremy placing her arms around his waist. "Oh, it's you. I thought you were to be in meetings all day. Can we help you with something?" It's all Jeremy can do to keep from laughing.
Andrew looks puzzled. "No, I, uh, saw these lovely roses and thought of you." He hands them out to her, but she doesn't take them.
"Well, they are beautiful, but I can't accept them. Besides daisies are my favorite. Only one daisy," she says as she smiles at Jeremy. Jeremy kisses her forehead.
Andrew says, "Oh, that's nice. Uh Candy, could we take a walk? There's something I need to talk to you about in private."
"I'm sorry, Andrew," she begins as she bites at her lip. "No, if I'm going to be completely honest," she pauses and looks at Jeremy before continuing, "then I must tell you I'm not sorry to tell you this, not in the least. I will not be accepting flowers, going for walks, or seeing any other man besides this man right here. The love of my life, Jeremy Bolt. So, if you have something you want to talk to me about, you can say it in front of Jeremy. We have no secrets from each other."
Andrew stands with his mouth gaped open. He stammers, "I-I-I'm sorry. I-I-I thought you two broke. . ."
Jeremy grins and says, "Broke up? No, you're mistaken. We're closer than ever. Now, if you'll excuse us, we were in the middle of eating breakfast. Have a good day." Jeremy starts to shut the door, then stops, "Oh Andy, you should really do something about that stutter." Then he shuts the door.
Candy opens the door. "Andrew wait!"
Being puzzled, Jeremy says, "Candy, what are you doing?"
She looks at Jeremy and answers, "You'll see."
Candy steps up to Andrew and says, "I have something I should have given you sooner." She slaps Andrew as hard as she can, making him to almost lose his balance. Looking at Jeremy she says, "Boy, did that ever feel good."
Jeremy chuckles, "Stings doesn't it? At least I got to kiss and make up which is something you'll never do." Jeremy holds his arm out to Candy, "Shall we finish breakfast?"
"Absolutely." She takes Jeremy's arm and adds, "Oh, one more thing Andrew. Jeremy and I are going to be married as soon as possible. Goodbye."
As they're eating, Jeremy chuckles, "I guess I'm going to Hell for treating a preacher so rudely."
"I guess I'll see you there," she giggles. "Maybe I shouldn't have done that, but I couldn't help myself. I can't believe the nerve of him. Just because he's a preacher, does he think he can take whatever he wants?"
"Calm down, Candy. Let's don't talk about him anymore. We've got more important things to talk about."
"We do? Like what?" she asks as she takes her plate over to the sink.
Jeremy follows her, placing his plate in the sink. He says shyly, "Like this getting married as soon as possible. You said it, Candy, not me. And you did say you were talking honest."
Candy bites at her lip. "Well, I mostly said it so he would know that we are together forever and happy. But Jeremy, I won't hold you to those words."
"So, you don't want to get married as soon as possible?" he asks raising his eyebrow.
"No, I don't mean that. Yes, I do want us to marry soon. But here? In New Bedford?"
"I'd marry you anywhere, Miss Pruitt. But there is one thing I refuse to do."
"What's that?"
"I will not let Andy marry us. I draw the line at that." Jeremy takes her in his arms and holds her close as he can. "Candy, are you serious about getting married here?"
She nudges as close to Jeremy as she can. "I've never been more serious in my life. I love you Jeremy and I want to be your wife as soon as possible."
"But what about your dream of getting married in our little church in Seattle with all our family and friends? Do you not still want that?"
"I want you more. Marry me, Jeremy. Now." She looks into his blue eyes.
"I want you too. Okay, we'll get married here, but you may have a problem."
"A problem? What problem?"
Jeremy chuckles. "How to tell Biddie she's no longer going to be your maid of honor."
Candy laughs. "I think Biddie will understand. Maybe."
Arriving in town to find a place to get married, Jeremy asks, "All right Candy, where do we go first?"
"There are several churches here. Surely one of them will marry us. If not, we can always go to the court house to be married by the justice of the peace."
"Candy, I can't ask you to do that. I know how much you want to be married in a church." He kisses her. "Let's go see if we can find one."
They visit two churches and are told the same thing. There is a twenty-four hour waiting period from the time they get their license. So they go get the license and make an eleven o'clock appointment at the Baptist church for the next day. On the way home, they stop off at Rachel and Sully's to tell them the news and ask them to stand up for them at the wedding. Of course, they say yes.
Walking home, as they go by a jewelry store, it dawns on Jeremy that he doesn't have a ring. They go inside and he tries to get Candy to show him which one she likes. "Come on Candy, I want you to have the ring of your dreams. Which one is it?"
"Jeremy, since this is coming from you, you should pick it out."
"Well, I want to get you the biggest ring in here, but I didn't bring enough money with me for that. I didn't know we were going to get married here. Help me out a little, can you? Just show me what you like."
"I don't want something big or fancy. All I want is a plain, gold band."
"You're sure? That's it?" he asks.
"That's it. That's all I want and need. Besides you that is."
"Well, you've got me, so a plain gold band it is."
After they visit the same restaurant they ate at before, they go home. Jeremy builds a fire and they sit on the floor wrapped in each others arms. They discuss the future they want together. Children. Their dream house. And of course, they do plenty of courting.
"Jeremy, is this really happening for us, finally? I can't believe it. Just think, when I woke up this morning, I thought my life with you was over. And I'd be on my way back to Seattle alone at this time."
"I know. I thought the same thing."
"What made you decide to forgive me and give us another chance?"
Jeremy sighs heavily. "I'm not sure if there was one single reason. I just knew that I still loved you and I thought about what life would be like without you. I realized I couldn't let you go. I had to forgive you." He puts his finger under her chin and tilts her face up until their lips meet. "I love you so much, Candy. When I think that I almost lost you I. . ." he tears up and can't go on.
Candy tears up too. "Jeremy, you will never lose me. I love you with everything that I am. You're my rock. You're my life. We're soulmates."
"I believe that too." He kisses her lips, then moves down to her neck. Their passion for each other rises. They slowly lay back on the floor and things start to get hot. His hands begin roaming over her body. She is responding the same way. All of a sudden, he stops. He starts to sit up, but Candy pulls him back down.
"Jeremy, please don't stop. Make love to me." She kisses him.
"Candy, oh how I want to. But we can't."
"Why not? We're getting married tomorrow morning. Jeremy, please. I want you. Now." She begins to raise his shirt over his head. Kissing his bare chest she says, "Jeremy, I love you."
"Are you sure? Because once we do this, there's no going back. We can't undo it."
"I know this is the biggest decision I've ever made. And I say yes. I want this," she says as she continues to kiss him.
"Candy, I just don't want you to be sorry. To have regrets," he whispers while kissing her body as he removes her clothes.
"No regrets. Jeremy, I feel like I'm on fire." She helps him remove the rest of his clothes. The fire between them gets intense until it builds to the highest level and then slowly starts to subside.
Jeremy rolls over. He looks at Candy and sees tears rolling down her cheeks. "I knew you would regret this. I'm sorry."
Candy puts her hand on his cheek and smiles. "I have no regrets. Jeremy, that was beautiful. I have never loved you more than I do right this minute." She snuggles up close to him, letting her hand wander around on his chest. "Do you have any regrets?"
"Regrets? Yes, I do have one regret, Candy. I regret we didn't do this sooner." They both laugh. He kisses her while they lay there holding on to each other like they are afraid to let go. "I guess we need to call it a night. We have a big day tomorrow."
They begin gathering up their clothes and slowly walk up the stairs to Jeremy's room. As he enters the room, he throws his clothes on the floor. He takes Candy's clothes and throws them on top of his. They stand there completely bare and can't take their eyes off of each other.
Jeremy pulls her close. "You are so beautiful, Candy Pruitt. I love you."
"Oh Jeremy, you're. . you're just breathtaking." She starts kissing his neck. "I love you, Jeremy Bolt."
Jeremy picks her up and lays her on the bed. "You're staying with me tonight. There's no reason not to anymore." He lays beside her and takes her in his arms giving her that crooked smile that melts her heart.
The fire begins building again. And burns for the rest of their lives.
THE END
