Doctor Who is one of my favorite shows. I really hope that you like this fanfiction. I'm going to try and update this story whenever I can rather than it being a fixed schedule. Criticisms are ok, but if you just go into insulting the story I won't tolerate that. I hope you enjoy it and if you have any questions about the story and The Historian, ask them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer it. Enjoy.
I don't own Doctor Who, it's owned by the BBC.
David Franklin's day didn't start off on a good note. He spent most of his life hoping for something new to happen, but he grew tired of the same old thing every single day. He lived in a small apartment in Atlanta, Georgia and studied at Georgia Tech with a Major in Agriculture. Despite getting his masters, he ended up getting a groundskeeper job at Piedmont Park.
David checked his watch, it was finally time for his break. He dropped the rake from his hand and walked over to his car. He wanted to drive over to his favorite coffee shop in the city, David only had an half hour before he had to go back to work. As David finally found a parking spot in the bustling and busy city, he noticed that his favorite coffee shop was closed.
"No!" David says angrily. The only place where he could finally relax and get some caffeine in his system. Now he's going to be stressed and hungry for the rest of the day.
David sees one of the coffee shop's employees exit from the coffee shop. David walks up to met her.
"Hey, what's going on?" David asks.
"One of our new employees accidentally started a fire, it didn't spread too far in the shop, but we're closed for the day," The employee stated.
"Damn," David muttered. "I was really hoping for some coffee before I get back to work."
"There's a new coffee shop in Atlanta you can go to. It even sells books too."
David perked up, hoping at a chance for coffee, "where?"
"I don't know actually, it keeps jumping around in addresses, but I know the most recent one where it might be at, do you have a pen and some paper? I can write it down for you."
David got the address from the employee, who wrote it down a napkin he had in his pocket. He didn't want to lose his parking spot, so he decided to walk there. Luckily, the new coffee shop was only a few blocks away.
David reached the new shop thanks to the address on the napkin, but he did notice that it did have a weird name. 'Second Hand.' He didn't know why anyone would name a bookstore/coffee shop that name, but it's better than nothing.
David entered the shop and he didn't smell any coffee. He noticed that it was more of a bookstore than a coffee shop. Shelves of books were everywhere around the store. David smelled a hint of pinecone in the store and he even noticed a couple of books littered around on the ground.
"Hello!?" David called out. "Is anyone here?! I want some coffee!"
David accidentally trips over a book, he falls down onto the floor. He groaned.
"This place is a mess," he muttered.
David hears some footsteps coming out from the back of the store.
"Oh, a customer on the floor, that's nice," A voice yawned. It was feminine and tiring. "I would help you, but you just woke me up from a nap, so I'm very tired. I don't have the energy to help you up."
David rolled his eyes and got up from the floor, he looked to see a woman in front of him wearing sky blue pajamas. She had bright blonde hair which was placed in a messy ponytail and bright green eyes with bags under them. She let out a soft yawn.
"Are you the owner?" David asks.
"I am, what do you want? A book? As you can see, I have plenty of those," The Woman remarked, referring to the various novels around in the shop.
"I just want some coffee with two sugars"
"Oh, you want the other thing that I sell in this shop. Ok then."
The Woman goes behind a counter and starts to make David some coffee. She makes it very slowly and very carefully, which annoys David.
"Excuse me, can you make the coffee faster?" David asks. "I only have limited time on a break before I have to go back to work."
"I'm making the coffee, isn't that enough?" The Woman shot back. "Now please wait."
David and the Woman stood in silence, he didn't want to be rude again, so he decided to open up with some friendly small talk.
"So, I'm David," He greeted.
"Hi David," The Woman replies tiredly,
"What's your name?"
"The Historian."
"You're a Historian?"
"In a way, yes I am,"
"Does everyone call you The Historian?"
"Yes they do," The so-called Historian finished making the coffee and gave it to David. "Here you go."
"Thanks, how much do I owe you?" David starts to pull out his wallet from his pocket.
"I don't really believe in money, you can have it for free," The Historian stated. "Do you want a book?"
Feeling bad for being rude to her earlier, David decided to get a book from her store.
"Sure, any suggestions?" David asks.
"I don't know. I know about every book inside my store. I'm not good at suggesting books to other people," The Historian picks up one of the books that was littered around on the store's floor. "Try this one."
David took the book from The Historian's hands.
David read the title of the book, "The Time Machine by H.G. Wells."
"It's been a while since I read this book," David says. "So do I just take it?"
"You can," The Historian pulls out a blanket and pillow from under the counter.
"But I don't wanna take a book from your store and not give you anything back."
The Historian rolls her eyes, "Fine, the book is five dollars."
David pulls out his wallet and gives her five dollars.
"Thank you, now go away, I want to sleep now," The Historian started to get comfortable on the floor.
David took a small sip of his coffee, it actually wasn't that bad.
"This is good coffee, I think I might come back here again, that is unless you don't want me too," David stated.
"Business cards are on the counter, just call the number and I'll give you my new address," The Historian yawned before curling up on the floor.
David grabs a card from the messy counter and exits the shop, he looks down at the business card and sees only a number, not the name of the shop or anything.
"She must be one of those hippie types," David muttered. He took note of her tired expression and her need to always sleep. He assumes she took some weed.
David turns around to look back at the store, but it was gone. It disappeared from the area it was, like it was never there.
"Weird," David looks at his watch, it was almost time for him to go back to work.
"I hope that I'll see you again, Historian," David says to himself.
David walks away to find his car.
When David gets home, he goes onto the internet and tries to look up any information about The Historian and her bookstore, but he couldn't find anything. The name of her bookstore doesn't even appear in the google search bar.
Who is this woman? He never saw her before. David assumed she must've moved from somewhere to Georgia.
He wanted to see her again.
David always had a curious mind, he wanted answers. Even in college, he wanted answers about where his old roommate was going in the middle of the night. Turns out, they were just sneaking out to see their girlfriend.
David decided to call her number, he dialed the number from the card and wanted for her to answer.
"Hello?" The Historian's voice came from David's phone.
"Hell, it's me David," He says.
"Who?"
"The guy who bought a book and some coffee from your store."
"Oh, the impatient douche. Hello, what do you want?"
David bit his lip to stop himself from saying something mean, "Well, I'm just asking about your new location."
"Oh, right. Well, my shop should be in Downtown Atlanta. If you want to buy something or anything you'll have until 8:00 pm tomorrow."
"Why?"
"Well, I'm going on vacation."
"Vacation? It seems like you're already on vacation."
"I know, I know. I just like to take naps, but I'm just looking for the perfect vacation spot for me. To relax and kick back. I have already been all over Georgia, it's an amazing state."
"Thank you, It really is. Any ideas on where you're going for vacation?"
"Nah, It's too tiring to figure out where to go."
"So lazy," David muttered.
"Yes, I am lazy. I want to ask you something David."
"Yes?"
"Would you like to go on vacation with me?"
David thought about it for a moment, why would he go on vacation with a complete stranger that he just met?
"Why are you asking me?"
"I can tell from the moment you fell down on the floor of my store that you're a workaholic. The way you tried to rush me while I was making your coffee, well it seems like you have a job that demands so much out of you, but offers so little."
David hates to admit that she's right. His current job forces him to work long and stressful hours with a moderate paycheck. He has a lot of vacation days saved up, but his job demands so much that he never finds the time to leave and actually start a vacation.
Wait, he isn't really going to do this is he? Plan a vacation with a stranger?
"I just want to ask you one thing," David says to The Historian.
"What?"
"What makes you think I would go on vacation with you?"
"What else are you gonna do? Work the night shift, believe me, working is not the only thing about life."
David sighs, "just let me tell my job that I'm going to use my vacation days, then I can pack up some of my stuff and go over to your store."
"Deal."
The Historian hung up.
David groans, why did he just say that? Maybe a vacation should be good for him, he has been working too much, but with a stranger? Who possibly has a drug problem? David pushed away those thoughts and picked up the book he bought from her store.
"It's not that bad of a read," David compliments. He opened the book and started to read.
David became swamped with work, it felt like his punishment for requesting to use at least one of his vacation days. He didn't leave his job until around 6;00 pm. David then quickly drove over to his place and started to pack his suitcase as fast as he could.
David drove over to the new location of The Historian's store, he didn't know how she could move her store to a new location so fast, but he didn't get much into it. He found a parking spot and walked into her store around 7:59 pm.
"Hey! I'm here! I have my bag!" David called out.
The store was messier than ever. David placed his suitcase against the wall and started to look for The Historian. He then felt the store rumble and shake slightly. David first thought that it was an earthquake, but it felt too small to be one. If it was an earthquake it would've been bigger. David looked out the window to see if anyone else noticed the shake, but he didn't see anything.
Atlanta. Georgia. It's gone. Disappeared not only from David's sights, but from anywhere actually.
"Where the hell is Atlanta?" David looks at the window in shock.
The Historian comes out of the back room, still wearing the sky blue pajamas.
"Oh, I didn't think you would come," she says.
"Where is Atlanta?! Where are we?!" David cried out
"I just moved the TARDIS out of Atlanta in the year 2020."
"TARDIS?"
"Time and relative dimension in space."
"Time travel? You mean it's real?"
"Time travel and travelling through different worlds and dimensions as well."
David looks around the bookstore, "this whole store, it's a ship. You're an alien."
"Smart aren't we?"
"But why are you here?"
"It's like I said, I'm going on vacation. Don't think I'm trying to take over your planet or anything."
David sighs in relief, at least she isn't trying to kill anyone.
"Well, I guess since you're here I can show you around. Come on."
The Historian took David into the back room, where he was even more amazed. Turns out the store is even bigger than he even imagined. The Historian showed him a couple of rooms, like the library, a kitchen, and even a swimming pool.
"This can be your room," The Historian shows David a normal looking guest room with a bathroom and flat screen television. "I hope you like it."
David places his suitcase on top of the bed, "Thank you."
"Now if you would follow me, I think we can get our destination started."
The Historian leads David to a room containing a huge alien console with various buttons and knobs.
"This is how I move the TARDIS through time and space," The Historian stands over the console and yawns. "So where and when do you want to go?'
"I can go anywhere in history."
"Or to any world in the universe."
"Well, how about a beach? Those places are always so relaxing."
"Hmm, I have never been to an earth beach before."
"Well let's change that shall we? How about we go to a beach in Florida?"
"Boring. Make it more interesting."
"Ok then, how about a beach in a different country? Germany?"
The Historian shook her head.
"Britain?"
"Nope."
"France?"
The Historian thought for a moment, "Well, that doesn't sound bad. I think I know what beach we can relax on."
The Historian started to push some buttons and pulled some knobs on the console. The bookstore started to shift again. Then the shifting stopped.
"We're here," The Historian stated.
"That was quick," David looked at her confused. "Are we in 2020 France or-"
"It's a surprise. Now come on, let's get ready for the beach."
David got into his blue swim trunks and wore a red t-shirt. The Historian got dressed in a blue swimsuit. David suddenly felt himself staring at her.
"What?" The Historian played with her messy blonde hair.
"Nothing, let's just go," David tries to hide the blush on his face.
They both walked out the store into an empty city. David looks around confused.
"Where is everyone? Where are we?" he asks.
"Huh, I expected more people," The Historian muttered. "Come on, let's go. The beach shouldn't be too far."
An explosion is heard, making David and The Historian jump.
"What the hell was that?" David looks around to see where the explosion came from.
"If I'm right, I think we're in big trouble," The Historian stated.
"What do you mean by that?!"
The explosions started to happen again, from left and right. David and The Historian ran into the bookstore. David leaned against the wall and started to catch his breath.
"Where the hell did you take us?" David asks, trying to recover from his shock.
"It was supposed to be France in the 80's. My TARDIS is always glitches when it comes to time travel."
"You didn't think of mentioning that before?! If we aren't in the 80's when are we?!"
David and The Historian heard some voices outside, angry voices. David peaked outside the store window to see soldiers in Nazi uniforms.
"God dammit!" David shouted as a Nazi was pressing a rifle against his head. "I knew I should've stayed in Georgia."
David felt himself getting knocked out.
David felt himself wake up and he found himself in a prison. Both of his arms are chained up to the wall and he sees two Nazi soldiers standing guard a few feet away. David looks around for The Historian.
"Historian! Historian! Where are you?!" David whispers.
One of the Nazi soldiers turned to him and he shut up instantly. He felt tired and his legs are getting dirty from the ground. He looked around for the Historian, but he couldn't find her. A Nazi soldier unchains David from the wall and forces him outside. He's thrown onto the ground next to The Historian, whose hands and legs are tied up along with David's.
"Are you ok?" David asks.
"Yes, thank you," The Historian replies.
"What about the TARDIS?"
"It was a defense mechanism on the inside, when the Nazis took us prisoner, the defense system activated and kicked them out. The TARDIS is now cloaked to hide from the Nazis," The Historian explained.
David looks at the Nazi soldiers in front of them. He didn't understand what they were saying at all, but he's sure that they're going to kill him and The Historian. He's read enough about what the Nazis did in World War Two, he didn't that'll happen to him.
"They're loading up their guns, they're going to kill us," The Historian says passively.
"You got us into this mess, you have to get us out!" David shouted. "I'm not going to die here! You have to do something, I don't want you to make any excuses either! It's your fault we're here!"
The Historian sighs, "You're right, it is my fault. I don't know why I'm like this, but even my mentor didn't like how lazy I am."
David started to calm down, "Your mentor? You mean from your planet?"
"Yes. I'm a Time lord from the planet Gallifrey or since I'm a girl I guess you can call me a Time lady. I was an assistant to a librarian in a galaxy library, where all of the history and knowledge of the universe and the timelines are stored. I was training to be Head Librarian at the galaxy library, I trained almost my whole life to take his job, but I didn't want it. I wanted to be free," the Historian chuckles slightly. "The thing that you said to me, he said the exact same thing to me once, before I stole a TARDIS and ran away. Now I can make my own destiny."
David stares at The Historian in pity. Even though she's admitting that it's her fault for bringing them into this situation. David is the one who agreed to it, so in some capacity, it's his fault as well.
"Look Historian, I know what it feels like when someone forces you to spend your whole life doing something that you don't like. I'm living that life myself, I just wish I had the strength like you to actually do something to leave it. I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry too. I know that I'm lazy and that I tend to forget things a lot, but I promise when we get out of this, I'll take you somewhere that won't try to kill you."
David chuckles, "Ok."
The Historian waddles over her hands to meet with David's, "It was nice meeting you David."
"It was nice meeting you too, Historian."
The Nazis started to train their rifles on David and The Historian. David held The Historian's hand tightly and they closed their eyes to brace for death. But they suddenly heard explosions and shouting. They both opened their eyes to see the Allied forces attacking the Nazi soldiers.
"The allies must've gotten through!" The historian shouted.
As the Nazi forces were being pushed back, one of the allied forces came over and freed David and The Historian from their binds.
"Come with us, we'll get you somewhere safe!" An allied soldier says.
"We need to get into the city," The Historian stated.
"It's too dangerous! The Nazis will be all over us!"
"You have to help us please!" The Historian cried. "Just take us into the city and we'll be alright."
"I don't know if I should listen to you or not, you're both wearing swimwear, but we'll try."
David and The Historian were led into the city by the allied forces on a stolen Nazi jeep, the Nazis were all over the city trying to stand their ground, but it didn't work.
"I don't see the TARDIS!" David shouted trying to increase the volume of his voice from all of the explosions happening around them.
"It's cloaked! It's in defense mode, the shields should be up now," The Historian explained. "I think we should start running to the TARDIS right about…now!"
The Historian and David jumped out of the jeep and started running through the city, dodging bullets and explosions as they ran through. They got to where the TARDIS is stationed and when The Historian waved her hand around, the TARDIS uncloaked and they both ran inside.
"I know what I said before wasn't true before, but now the shields are up and we'll be safe," The Historian stated.
"I really hope you're right about the shields this time," David berated. He then calmed down, "but I won't blame you if it doesn't. Just get us out of the 1940's."
"Yes sir," The Historian did a mock salute and went into the console room to move the TARDIS.
After a small minute, the store started to shake slightly again. The Historian exits the console room and yawns.
"Man that was so tiring, I haven't done that much physical activity in a long time," The Historian started to stretch. "I'm going to get out of this swimsuit and into something more comfortable."
"Wait," David says.
"Hmm?"
"Do you ever think about going back to your planet?"
"Sometimes. But other times I think about the freedom that I want, I like the freedom that I have right now."
"I think I have a place where both of us can forget our troubles."
After getting something to eat in the TARDIS' kitchen, The Historian correctly lands the TARDIS in Normandy, France 1984. Where they can finally enjoy the beach. David just got out of the water where he was swimming, while The Historian was lazing around in the sun with her light blue bikini. David buys two ice cream cones for the both of them and sits down next to her.
"This is nice," The Historian sighs. "There are a lot of other places in history that we can relax in. Not just history either, planets and universes as well."
"That's what you're going to do with your time ship? Just have an extended vacation?"
"Nothing wrong with that. You can still come with me if you want, I know that with what happened you might be scared or-"
"I'll stay."
The Historian looks at David in surprise, "Really? You will?"
"I've been reading The Time Machine again, turns out, you can just take me back to where we left and it'll be like I wasn't even gone at all, plus a little vacation never hurt anyone right?"
"Right."
The Historian licked on their ice cream cone slightly.
"But if I'm going to stay in the TARDIS, I'm going to have to do some cleaning."
"I'm not helping. I hate cleaning up."
"I know you aren't going to help me, I bet you'll sleep all day if you wanted to."
"Yup."
David chuckled, "Come on, I'll show you how to make a sandcastle."
The Historian smiles as David starts to gather sand from the ground. She now will never be lonely again.
Never again.
