P.S. I'd like to thank romanreloaded for beta reading this for me!
There was a ripple across the blank void.
The roar of the engines was only slightly louder than the cheers of the crowd.
The car blasted past the finish line and slightly screeched as it came to a halt. The navy clad driver elegantly exited the vehicle and removed her helmet.
"She's done it!" Blared the announcer. "For the third year in a row Haruka Tenou is the winner of the Monaco Grand Prix!"
Haruka's team rushed up to her, champagne in hand. Despite their excitement, she was remarkably restrained, simply giving a cocky smile and masterfully sipping some of the champagne.
The closest Haruka came to breaking her cool was toasting her race car.
Space rippled again, as if it were water blown by the wind.
The London stadium was filled with music as the three-way stage performance commenced. The music was an arrangement combining the most popular pieces from all three idols.
The Londoners roared with delight when the Three Lights began their classic hit 'To the Shooting Stars'. Later they sang along with Minako's signature single 'C'est La Vie'.
However, they were seemingly silent throughout Michiru's debut performance of 'Fate So Beautifully'. It was only when she'd lowered her violin that it became apparent that the crowd were crying salty tears.
Another shimmer. Another ripple.
"Careful now," the scientist warned.
"I know, I know," replied the dark-haired girl.
She lowered the scalpel slowly, purposefully, into the petri dish. Her face winced as she dissected the dead lab specimen.
"Not pleasant is it?"
"No. No it isn't. But... I know it's sometimes necessary to do things like this. To bring about new things. New things that might be able to help sick people like me in the future..." She paused for a moment. "Sick people like I used to be," she corrected herself.
The scientist looked almost sad.
"What's the matter?" the dark-haired girl asked. "You agree, don't you?"
The scientist shook his head. "It's not that. It's just... " A small, sad smile crossed his face. "You've grown up so fast. It seems like only yesterday that you were a baby in my arms."
"Well, that's not entirely inaccurate, is it Papa?"
He chuckled. " I suppose not Hotaru. I suppose not."
The heads of all her employees turned as she and her entourage marched down the corridor.
She returned their glowing smiles with one of her own, even as she sporadically returned to the clipboard in her hand.
"Here." She removed the top sheet of paper and handed it to someone on her left. "I've devised this new formula. Could you see to it that the lab has the materials I need to test it out tomorrow morning."
"Right away Ms. Meiou!"
As the aide moved off she returned to her clipboard.
"And as for you," she said to a woman on her right, handing her a far larger sheet of paper. "This is what we will be doing for our upcoming Spring line."
The woman's eyes boggled. "Ms. Meiou, these designs are breathtaking. But then I shouldn't be surprised. You are the world's greatest fashion designer after all."
"Oh stop it, you're too kind." She waved a dismissive hand.
"But what will you be doing tonight Ms. Meiou? Dreaming up new gowns or continuing to work on 'Chemical X'?"
"Neither," replied Setsuna. "Tonight, I'll be attending a party."
"Oh, how lovely. That'll be the fifth party this week won't it?"
Setseuna's face broke into a wide smile. "Well, you know how I love…"
"...company..." Setsuna sighed out.
The word seemed to echo through the blank, empty void. For a moment she stood still by the elegant door allowing the echo to die out. She closed her eyes, trying to dive back into the lovely daydream.
It was no good though, she just wasn't in the mood anymore.
Setsuna instead extended her staff outwards, making the void before her shimmer and ripple again as she attempted to zero back in on the past. Being the Senshi of Time had its perks after all, especially since she'd recently discovered this new ability of hers.
Back in the 90s, she'd been too preoccupied with helping her fellow Senshi to test the limits of her Super form. But she'd had plenty of time to do so upon returning 'home' to the Space-Time Corridor.
As the images of the past materialized before her, Setsuna rotated her Garnet Rod with precision 'scrolling' further back in time.
She stopped when she found what she was looking for. A Halloween themed gathering at the Hikawa Shrine.
Almost everyone was there. The Prince and Princess.
"Great party Rei! But why're you doing it so early? Halloween isn't for another couple of days."
The Inner Senshi.
"Urgh, the entertainers were totally booked up for October 31st. So, I settled for today. Business is business after all. Hey, where're Haruka and Michiru."
Hotaru.
"I think they're talking alone over there. You know how they can be sometimes."
And...
Setsuna moved closer to the floating images in the air. Their navy and green outfits were stunning, accentuated by the cherry blossoms floating around them.
"I miss her."
"It's only natural. Today would have been her birthday."
The Queen was nearby, though of course she was still merely a princess. Setsuna could've sworn there was a somewhat haunted expression upon her face. She didn't pay too much attention to it though as Hotaru came galloping past her, running up to Haruka and Michiru. She grabbed a hand from each of them and began dragging them back to the others.
A moment later Setsuna paused the image and drank in all nine of them, her eye fixating upon Haruka, Hotaru and Michiru.
"...I miss you too..."
She deactivated the image.
Once more the void was silent, except for the sound of Setsuna softly sobbing.
