Chapter 8 The Spirit of Competition
Its been a few days since Lin's stunt in exposing Sean's worst memories 30,000 years ago when the Kaiju wars began and when Sean lost his fiance when it happened.
And since Godzilla nearly killed her by taking off her arms and legs before horribly burning her and left her to die.
Only for Sean's friend Reznov who also held a Titan known as Orga who could regenerate skin and missing limbs healed her knowing he would later regret it. (Sora I never once said she was dead. He left her to die but she was still alive before Reznov showed up and healed her. PAY ATTENTION! I'm getting sick and tired of you misreading the story and then taking it out on me because of your mistakes!)
Korra had stayed close to Sean knowing the memories of that day was making life uneasy for him.
Lin herself was given one major earful from Tarrlok since her actions destroyed his plan to have them join his task force.
She was currently suspended from her job without pay for the next couple weeks.
And people turned on her calling her the true monster and some even attacked her in broad daylight without any remorse since they felt she deserved it.
Right now Korra was training with her team while Sean watched in silence.
"It's been great having you at so many back to back practices, Korra." Mako said.
"It's been great to be back." Korra said before looking at Sean as he held his face making her sigh.
"So...How is he?" Bolin asked.
"Lousy. Beifong has made things really uncomfortable for him since she brought up his worst memory. I can't blame him for not being himself." Korra said before Reznov walked to them and smirked.
"I think I know a way to cheer him up. Contrary to what you may think Kruger used to be a real famous Comedian before he became a scientist." Reznov said making her eyes widen.
"Your kidding me." Korra said.
"Nope. His brother was part of a TV series back in our day called whose line is it anyway? David invited him on for a while." Reznov said.
"Why didn't he just become a scientist in the beginning?" Korra asked.
"The department had a rule. A dumb rule to be honest but understandable. No one could join the Department until they were at the age of 13. He was 10 when he graduated. So he just decided to pass the time with some fun rather than sit around at home." Reznov said.
"Was he really that good?" Bolin asked.
"I was better than the Idiot in the room who worked for the Triple threats." Sean said making Korra and Mako snicker while Bolin pouted. "I actually got offered a few spots on TV back in my day." Sean said.
"Oh yeah? Take any of them?" Korra asked.
"One. I might reveal that tonight if Butakha lets me." Sean said before Asami walked in with the new uniforms. "Not bad." Sean said.
"Thanks. I put in my own design. So how you feeling?" Asami asked.
"I'll live. I just need time to get over it. I can't believe she's Toph's daughter. Toph was a pain at times but even she would never do that to someone." Sean said.
"Oh yeah thats right. You knew Aang's old group back in the day...WAIT A MINUTE! That would mean Katara, Sokka and Zuko knew who you were when you showed up as Ghost." Korra realized.
"Obviously. I didn't want to reveal anything obvious in front of the modern White Lotus. We had more respect for the old one." Sean said as Godzilla took over.
"The modern version is what I believe you would call...All bite and no bark?" Godzilla asked making her giggle.
"You mean All Bark and no bite." Korra said.
"Oh. I always mixed up human phrases from time to time." Godzilla said making Sean chuckle as he took over.
Later
Korra was helping Jinora and Ikki put some food in the feeders for the lemurs.
"So, how's it going with the tall, dreamy fire bender boy? You've been spending a lot of time together lately." Jinora teased.
"Ooh, yeah. Tell us all about the Magical romance!" Ikki said excited.
"What? Listen to you two. I'm not interested in Mako or any romantic stuff...But lets just pretend for a second I am interested in romance...what would I do?" Korra asked.
"Ooh, I just read a historical saga where the heroine fell in love with the enemy general's son who was supposed to marry the princess. You should do what she did." Jinora said.
"Tell me." Korra said excited.
"She rode her dragon into battle and burned down the entire country. Then she jumped into a volcano. It was so romantic." Jinora said.
"Uh." Korra said very confused.
"No, no, No!" Ikki yelled. "The best way to win a boy's heart Is to brew a love potion of rainbows and sunsets that makes true lovers sprout wings and fly to a magical castle in the sky where they get married and eath clouds with spoons and use stars as ice cubes in their moonlight punch forever and ever and ever." Ikki said swirling around. (Christ! Give this girl an award for saying all that without breathing.)
"The Volcano makes more sense to me now." Korra said annoyed that they didn't help at all before Peme started laughing behind them. "Oh, hey, Pema! Uh, how long were you standing there?" Korra asked awkwardly making her laugh.
"Long enough. But trust me, I know what you're going through. Years ago, I was in the exact same situation. With Tenzin." Pema said.
"Daddy was in love with someone else before you?" Ikki asked.
"That's right." Pema said.
"So what did you do?" Korra asked.
"Well, for the longest time I did nothing, I was so shy and scared of rejection. But watching my soul mate spend his life with the wrong woman became too painful. So I hung my chin out there, and confessed my love to Tenzin. And the rest is history." Pema said.
"Wow." All three said before Korra thought it over and grinned.
"So just tell Mako how you feel and..." Pema tried to say.
"For the last time. It's not Mako. He's not my type and he's a Major League Ass." Korra said annoyed.
"Well, then who is it?" Jinora asked making her smile.
"It's Sean." Korra said shocking the girls while Peme smiled. "I've always had feelings for him since I turned 13. He's always been there for me. Trained me, Protected me, Made me laugh. It's hard not to fall for someone like that." Korra said.
"Wow. That is so romantic. Falling in love with your teacher." Jinora said dreamily making Korra snicker.
"Teacher, Protector, Friend. Yeah he fits in all those categories." Korra said.
Later
The stadium was completely packed full of people for tonight.
Korra was about to head into her booth when.
"Korra." Senna said making her freeze turning to see her parents.
"What the? What are you guys doing?" Korra asked smiling walking to them.
"You didn't think we would actually miss this did you?" Tonraq asked making her giggle.
"Well, I'm glad you're both here." Korra said.
When everyone was seated Butakha told them Sean would be performing for them before the actual games.
"Now...People have been asking me some questions about my past. Where did I grow up? What was the name of the City or kingdom I lived in and so on. First off we were so advanced we didn't have kingdoms anymore or human leaders. The Titans were in charge of everything and for good reason. So there were no kings and queens. Now as to where I lived...You're standing on it." Sean said shocking them.
"Wait what?" Mako asked.
"Republic City is sitting on the remains of the old capital of my time known as Titan City." Sean said making some people laugh. "Although it wasn't called that for obvious reasons your all clearly thinking. Imagine the city you all currently live in with buildings that were 10 times as high as they are now with incredible technology where anything is possible. Flying cars and what not. Life was good. Now...Before I became a scientist I went to school like any other kid in my time." Sean said getting some laughs.
"Here comes the jokes." Reznov said.
"One story during my school years was this. Back in school we had this teacher Known as Mr. Jewel. And his Son Jason Jewel went to our school and he was the same grade as me when I graduated but the difference being though is that he was 16 and I was 10 when we graduated...Kinda a kick to the balls knowing a ten year old graduated the same time as you did." Sean said getting people to laugh.
"Now Mr. Jewel was what you would call an asshole." Sean said getting people to laugh. "And one day he and his wife decided to leave town. Which is not smart when your an asshole. Now Jason decided while his parents were gone he was gonna throw a party so yay." Sean said as people laughed. "And word got around the school and everyone just decided Ok lets go over there and fuck the place up." Sean said as people laughed.
"Wait is this whole thing true?" Korra snickered asking Reznov.
"Keep listening." Reznov said.
"Me, Hitomi, Reznov, My Brother David and another walked into this party and everyone from school was there. And everyone was drinking like it was the end of the world. Now before anyone says underage drinking is bad. In our time a chemical was added to it so no brain damage occurred unlike modern drinking. Everyone was drinking like it was the end of the world." Sean said making people laugh.
"Now Me and Hitomi walked into the basement and saw a guy who clearly drank too much and took a running start and threw himself onto a table and broke it in half launching food and drinks everywhere." Sean said making people laugh. "Another classmat found out which room belonged to the teacher and went into the room and took a shit on his desk." Sean said making the crowd burst out laughing as did Korra. "So the Party was going great." Sean said.
Korra laughed as she banged the railing.
"Now while Hitomi and I didn't drink since we weren't stupid my brother David was and he was starting to black out. And for some reason some one said..Something...Something...Police." Sean said mimicking a drunk person making people laugh. "And in a brave moment of confidence...My brother yelled out...FUCK THE POLICE! FUCK THE POLICE!" Sean yelled making everyone laugh. "And the dumb thing is everyone joined in. A hundred drunk idiots yelled out Fuck the Police." Sean said as everyone laughed.
"Now the reason someone yelled that out is because the Police arrived because of a noise complaint. So Titan City Police arrived got to the basement and heard the chant of fuck the Police in her face. And she was actually impressed. She was like...WOW." Sean said making everyone laugh. "And then she leaned into her radio and went...Get cell Truck." Sean said. "Which was a truck that could hold a hundred people all together since she intended to bring us all in." Sean said making people laugh.
"And my friend Tristin who was what we called a ladies man." Sean said making people laugh. "He grabbed a bottle...Smashed it on the ground and yelled...SCATTER!" Sean yelled making everyone laugh. "And everyone ran into different directions. Me, Hitomi and David ran into the Laundry room climbed out a fucking window and ran into a fence I said...I have never climbed a fence that high before...And then we woke up at home." Sean said making everyone laugh.
"He forgot to mention they left me behind." Reznov said making Korra giggle.
"On Monday...We went to school. Cause thats what we did. And who do I see in the hallway? Jason Jewel. And he asks...Hey were you at my party?" Sean said making people laugh. "And I said...No...You know like a liar." Sean said making people burst out laughing.
"He said things got really out of hand. Someone broke the table...Someone took a shit on my Dad's desk...But the worst thing you see is someone stole all these old antique photos of my grandmother...And now my parents are freaking out about it. And I had that thought that only blacked out drunks have...Did I do that?" Sean asked making people laugh. "I figured nah since I didn't drink...But I was never sure...Until...Two weeks later." Sean said making people let out a startled laugh. "Relax." Sean said making them laugh.
"Oh no." Korra said.
"I'm playing what we called Video games with this kid named Alex who was the same age as me and Hitomi. Now after a couple of hours he says...hey let me show you something. My thought was Oh jee I wonder what this is about?" Sean asked making people laugh. "Now he takes me into his bedroom and then shows a side room beside his bedroom...Never a good thing to have." Sean said making people laugh.
"Wait for it." Reznov said.
"He shows me a tiny ass room that is COVERED wall to wall in stolen Antique photos from different peoples parties over the years." Sean said making people burst out laughing. "And In a moment of fear...I asked...WHY? Why would you do this? And he said...Cause it's the one thing you can't replace." Sean said making everyone burst out laughing. "Thats end of that story but Christ how fucked up is that?" Sean asked as people cheered before he walked to Korra and the others.
"The whole story was true?" Korra asked.
"Every fucking word. I never saw that kid again after that since he scared me." Sean said making her laugh before the match was about to start. "Best of luck." Sean said making her grin before her team went out.
To everyones amazement the Fire Ferrets won flawlessly. (Sora theres no point in doing the matches if they end the same as in cannon)
"WHOO HOO!" Korra cheered.
"Very impressive." Sean said.
"Hey. I had a good teacher." Korra said before looking at him which he noticed.
"Something on your mind?" Sean asked.
"I was...Hoping we could spend some time together." Korra said as Bolin approached her before freezing hearing this.
"Don't we always?" Sean asked.
"Sean I...I was thinking maybe we could...Be in a relationship." Korra said making him look at her.
"You wanna go out with me?" Sean asked crossing his arms.
"Yeah." Korra said nervous before he smirked.
"All right. I got no problem with that." Sean said making her cheer before they rushed off as Bolin looked depressed.
"Aww." Boline said before Asami held his shoulder.
"Don't worry Bolin. There plenty of people out there that will get your attention." Asami said.
"But what does he have that I don't?" Bolin asked.
"Wisdom, Power...Maturity." Reznov listed off making him sulk while Reznov chuckled. "Oh please. It's clear she's had feelings for him for a long time. You should have just come out and said you had feelings for her before this happened. Though I doubt it would change how she feels about him." Reznov said.
Meanwhile
Sean and Korra were at a restaurant with Korra eating artificial water tribe food.
"Now this is why I favor the Water Tribe the most." Sean said eating his own water tribe food.
"No kidding. Kinda makes me miss home." Korra said.
"Enough to move back?" Sean asked.
"Mmm. Maybe. I know when all the Titans come back I won't be needed as much." Korra said.
"Is that a bad thing?" Sean asked making her smile.
"Honestly? I can live with it. Means I can enjoy something of a normal life...Have a family one day." Korra said making him smile. "Is that something Hitomi and you wanted?" Korra asked making him chuckle.
"That was the first thing she wanted to have when we got married. You know...Young parents and all that so they can't call us old." Sean said making her giggle as he sighed. "But it was taken away from her. Hitomi like me lost her parents in a lab accident. They weren't uncommon back then since Science was Trial and Error. Sometimes you can't do everything perfectly the first time. But the titans make sure the children of the science division if something happens are well taken care of." Sean said.
"So you two were a lot alike." Korra said.
"In a lot of ways. We both wanted to do some real good in the Science division. My entire family have been a long line of respected scientists going back to when Technology first began. Follow the family linage." Sean said.
"And yet your brother chose to be a comedian on some show?" Korra asked making him chuckle.
"Oh he had potential but he wanted to have fun first before following the same path as the others." Sean said before the One Known as Tahno approached them.
"Well, hello Avatar. Why don't you leave this old man and join a real winner." Tahno said.
"Piss off." Korra said annoyed.
"Now don't be like that...I..." Tahno tried to say before Godzilla in a smaller form was right next to him making him shake in fear.
"Boo." Godzilla said making him shriek as he ran off in fear.
Both burst out laughing as Sean took control and turned human.
"Oh that never gets old." Sean said laughing.
Later
After having fun in the city they arrived back at the Arena.
"I had a lot of fun." Korra said.
"I'm glad you did. I aim to please." Sean said before she stopped.
"Sean...I need to know. Was Hitomi the reason you never told Kyoshi and Yangchen?" Korra asked making him freeze.
"How did you..." Sean tried to ask.
"I managed to contact Kyoshi shortly after I joined the Fire Ferrets. I wanted to know more about what you taught them. She told me you two and Yangchen were romantically involved but it ended because you wouldn't open up even when they pushed." Korra said making him sigh. "Is that what you were always sad about?" Korra asked.
"Korra...Let me be very blunt...Theres a special place in hell for people like me." Sean said shocking her before he walked away while she just stood there at a loss for words.
Korra and her team had won the next match easily before they came back to their booth where her parents were at.
"Korra?" Senna asked seeing the look on her face.
"Whats wrong?" Tonraq asked.
"I..." Korra tried to say.
"Did something go wrong on your date with Sean?" Asami asked.
"No...That went fine...Until we got back. I tried to ask if Hitomi dying was the reason he never opened up With Kyoshi and Yangchen." Korra said.
"The Avatars before you?" Senna asked.
"Yeah...And he told me theres a special place in hell for people like him." Korra said surprising them.
"Where did that come from?" Asami asked.
"Thats what I want to know. Does he feel that way because he couldn't save her?" Korra asked.
"No." Sean said walking in with Reznov. "Thats only part of it." Sean said as Korra walked to him.
"Sean...Whatever you did in the past theres no way you could think that way about yourself." Korra said as he closed his eyes. "What did you do to make you hate yourself so much?" Korra asked as his eyes slowly opened up.
"I'm the one who brought the Kaiju to Earth." Sean said shocking them all.
"You brought those things here!" Mako asked.
"QUIET!" Sean yelled making him back up.
"Easy. Calm down. What do you mean your the one who brought them? How and Why?" Korra asked.
"It wasn't on purpose. It was an accident. I told you before 30,000 years ago I was a scientist. What I didn't tell you was that I was arrogant in my abilities. I thought I could do anything without approval as long as I got results. Does this sound familiar Korra?" Sean asked making her look away since she was like that before he got it our of her system.
"I had made incredible leaps in the field that no one had seen in thousands of years. That only made my arrogance worse. Then One day I noticed the amount of technology we made was getting more and more advanced. So I asked myself what if one day we made technology so powerful our current fuel source would be incapable of sustaining it. I brought that up to the scientific community and they agreed with me. So I offered a proposal that while Radical was understandable. To look beyond the dimensional barriers." Sean said.
"You mean other worlds that are connected to ours." Korra said.
"Yes. Of course the community was concerned there might be risk involved with this. But I went ahead with it anyway without approval as I always did. And I found a fuel source that was 20 times stronger than the current kind we had. I was hailed as a prodigy of prodigies for that. Everything seemed fine...Until a month later. The Kaiju came through. My actions had created the breach you all know. And the first of the victims were those I worked with. And worst of all...I lost Hitomi because of my actions. So When I say theres a special place in hell for people like me...Its completely true." Sean said before he left.
"Reznov...Is all that true?" Asami asked.
"Yeah...But we all knew it was an accident. Kruger presented himself in front of the Titans and those who were leader figures. They knew he never meant for that to happen and didn't punish him. But he never forgave himself for what happened that day." Reznov said as Korra left.
Sean was outside leaning on the railing with a heavy sigh as he held his head.
Only for Korra to gently grab his hand.
"Thats why you never opened up with them right?" Korra asked.
"I was afraid...They would see me as a monster for what I had done. The lives of 20 billion people ended early...Because of my actions." Sean said in regret.
"Sean. That wasn't your fault. How could you have known they were on the other side. You were trying to help your people with a possible problem that might occur in the future." Korra said.
"And look where that led. Humanity was at the height of its's time in my day. Now look at it. Forced to start over...Because of me." Sean said.
"Sean...Look at me." Korra said making him do so as she held his face. "You are not that person anymore. You made one mistake. But you learned from it and became someone even better. A person I love." Korra said shocking him.
"Korra I..." Sean tried to say.
"You made amends for what you did. You trained good leaders over the last 30,000 years. Trained almost Every Avatar so people were in good hands while the Titans recovered. Including me. You trained me, Protected me, Made me smile every chance you could. Thats who I love here and now. And Hitomi would be proud of you for who you are now." Korra said before he broke down as his back hit the railing as he sobbed before she held him close. "Shh." Korra said holding him close.
"I didn't mean for everyone to get killed!" Sean sobbed.
"I know. But this is who you are here and now. You made up for what you did. And you made me who I am today. And thats who I love more than anything." Korra said as he sobbed as she held him close.
Authors Note: Wow that was a major shock. Sean was the one who brought the Kaiju to earth by accident and lived the last 30,000 years in regret from his actions. But changed into the wise and knowing person he is today. One who will make sure history never repeats itself. Now Next Chapter is the finals with something really special in mind.
