Nearby a river bank lay a small two story house surrounded by beautiful pink and lilac flowers. Inside the cosy little home, Historia slowly backed into her daughters' bedroom. She was doing her very best to to keep quiet and avoid spilling the cups of water she was carrying. Her caution was only half justified though, as she discovered both five year olds still wide awake within the bed.
"Mama! You bought more water!"
"More?" Historia said in confusion.
She eyed their nightstands and saw a cup already on each of them, albeit one was empty.
"I remembered to bring them up myself."
"And I, er… kinda forgot not to drink mine all at once."
Historia felt a mixture of pride and despair. Pride at the foresight of one of her daughters. Despair at how her other would inevitably be awoken in the middle of the night.
"Well, now you each have a cup each and can share the third one if you need to," she pacified, placing the cups down and moving back towards the door.
"Wait!" They both chorused.
"What? What?"
"You have to tell us our story!"
"We can't sleep without our story!"
Historia sighed, and took her position at the edge of the bed.
"Alright, once upon a time…"
Once upon a time there were two twin stars.
The twins were small, poor and destitute, each envious of what little the other had. War, fighting and chaos was constant between the two worlds, making everything far worse for everyone.
The people of those stars clung to their memories of pain and hatred for one another… whilst always forgetting that fighting and envy was the very cause of all that suffering in the first place.
That was, until the day when a horrible golden demon descended upon the stars and stole their light. The people of the sister stars were at last united by the silence of death.
All save two young maidens.
The demon promised to spare the maidens and give them a future full of peace and happiness once she brought her curse to the entire galaxy. All the maidens had to do was promise to be her slaves, bound to the demon by a set of cursed bracelets. The maidens agreed and were made to guard the moats of the demon's castle, the Desert Rivers of Memory and Oblivion.
They spent many years serving the demon as she stole the light of a thousand stars. But, one day five stars came to the Desert Rivers looking for friends that the demon had snatched away. Among the five stars, was the brightest shining star of all. It was the one star the demon wanted above all, the star she had searched the galaxy for, spreading her curse as she did so.
One of the maidens took pity on the bright silver star. The other maiden hated her, blaming her for all the fighting across the universe.
But then the silver star did something nobody expected. She told the maidens to take her life if that would stop all the fighting and pain.
The maidens were so moved by the star's love and selflessness, they decided to let her pass. However, the demon and her other minions would not forgive such treachery. She removed the cursed bracelets from the maidens and turned their bodies to dust.
However, their sacrifice was not in vain. The shining silver star they had spared used the power of her love to vanquish the demon once and for all. In doing so, she broke her curse, returning the stolen light to every single other star in the galaxy.
The maidens' home stars came back to life, but they were not as they had been before. They remembered dying together at the hands of the golden demon, and that soon made them forget their old envy and hatred of one another. The sister stars shared what one another had instead of trying to take it each other. Finally united together, they rebuilt their worlds in harmony, bringing about the peace and happiness the maidens had always dreamed of.
"The end," announced Historia.
Her children were still awake but noticeably drowsier. She tucked them both in and planted a kiss on both their foreheads.
"Wait." This time their chorus was noticeably quieter and more lethargic.
"You didn't tell us what…"
They both yawned.
"...what happened to the maidens?"
Historia let out a tiny huff and smiled.
"Oh, they both got to live happily ever after of course. Now get to sleep you two."
"Alright. Good night Mama."
"Goodnight Mnemosyne. Goodnight Lethe."
With that, Historia left the room, closed the door and left her twin daughters to have peaceful, happy dreams.
