"Good evening, Ellie." A deep voice startling the young woman.

Ellie looked up at the unexpected guest. Chris Redfield. The man who rescued her brother and Mia a few years ago in Louisiana. He stood at about six foot even, no more or less, short brown hair buzzed at a minimum length due to his profession. A long black turtleneck sweater, leather jacket; dark blue jeans and black boots he sported for his clothes. A smooth band of dark chocolate beard graced his jawline, with a small amount of wrinkles adorning his features. Not that Ellie didn't think he was good looking, but he was at least almost double her age. And it wouldn't look good if he was with a younger woman half his age.

"Mr. Redfield. W-what brought you here this evening?" Ellie asked as she looked at him, her anxiety slowly spiking.

"I hope I'm not intruding on anything. It is a bit chilly out this evening."

"Oh! No, of course not, please come in." the young woman startled, moving aside and letting the Captain into the home.

Chris stepped inside the wide entryway of the humble dwelling, although he was still cautious of his surroundings. After years of serving in the military, working against bioweapons; monsters, zombies, terrifying creatures that the human imagination could only conjure up in the mind. One would never forget their training when it came to watching your six and surroundings. When he stepped inside, he took a minute to listen for anything suspicious inside the spacious adobe. When he deemed it was safe, the Captain immediately turned around and began gazing at the beauty before him.

Ms Ellie Winters - Ethan's younger sister. He had seen his fair share of beautiful women over the years - Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Sheva, Rebecca Chambers; some were acquaintances, coworkers, friends, even some considered family, but none of them could compete with Ellie. Her beauty alone made him perceive affection in a way that would be almost - predatory. The Captain was aware of the age difference between them, but at this point, he could give a damn. She closed the door behind him, placing a hand on the heavy double oak doors before turning the deadlock in place. She twisted back to him, but was unsure of what he wanted or why he was here at seven o'clock at night.

The way Ellie looked was impeccable - her chestnut hair falling down in long waves to the middle of her shoulder blades; forest green eyes sparkled in the dim lighting of the entryway. Her slender body looked almost too sleek, years of possible malnourishment she endured but it could be a figment of his imagination. Chris looked down at her figure, eyeing her as if she were a delectable meal - different shaped speckles of caramel freckles dancing along her high cheekbones and nose; her collarbone peeking out of her olive green shirt, her breasts -

"Mr. Redfield?"

"Hmm?"

"Is everything alright?" Ellie asked, her features twisted in a small inquiring glance. Her fingers wringing, knotting and twirling around each other, a sign of anxiousness and maybe - fear? Uncertainty? He wasn't too sure; he had little interactions with Ellie in the three years he knew of her existence since the Louisiana incident with her brother Ethan. While he did have a care for her brother, he was almost at the point of disappointment with him; how dare that man try to keep this woman a secret from him. His superior - Chris Redfield always knew of everyone's backgrounds; well, he thought he did.

"Sorry, it's been a rough day. How're you doing, Ellie? It's … good to see you again." Chris answered, staring at her with a small glint of affection in his voice.

"I-I-I'm good, Mr. Redfield -"

"Please, call me Chris."

"Um, Chris. I'm sorry, but why are you here this evening? Is something wrong?"

"No, nothing at all. Didn't your brother mention I was coming?"

"Coming for what?"

"Dinner. Ethan didn't say anything about me coming over tonight?" Chris asked, confusion written on his aged features.

"N-no, he never mentioned anything about anyone coming tonight." \

"Hmph. I'm honestly not surprised, Ethan doesn't seem like the bright light bulb in the drawer." Chris sighed, crossing his arms in front of his chest and shaking his head in disbelief. How could that man forget to mention to his sister that they would be having company?

"To be fair, he's not all that smart. He forgets how to hold Rosemary properly." Ellie joked lightly as she slid off her white overall jacket and hung it up on the coat rack.

Her laugh made him feel something deep in his chest, and he smirked at her comment about her brother. He knew she was the smarter of the two; maybe he could be given a chance at having some normalcy in his life. Would she give him a chance? \

"You look beautiful tonight, Ellie."

"O-O-Oh! Thank you, if I'd known you were coming over, I would've changed into something more -"

"Nah, you look just fine."

Ellie blushed, her eyes downcast as she stared at the floor. She wasn't used to compliments, considering who she's been living with as of late. She never had a relationship with anyone, always having Ethan being overprotective of her. In fact, she never really felt connected with any man she encountered as a possible companion. She could almost feel their auras, almost know what they're thinking; a lot of men would usually think of getting in between a woman's legs and having their way with them. Ellie didn't want that; she wanted someone who truly cared for her well being, someone who could understand her, love her for who and what she was.

Chris glanced down at Ellie, noticing how she almost grimaced at the compliment. He thought about it for a moment, had she been neglected? Was she being abused, past tense or present? Was Ethan not taking care of his little sister? What had happened to her?

"Are you alright? You don't seem like yourself tonight."

"I'm just having an off night, nothing else."

"Ellie? Ethan didn't do anything, did he?" Chris questioned, stepping closer to the petite woman, worry slowly etched onto his face. She flinched slightly, stepping a small foot away from the larger man, immediately halting the Captain's advances.

"No! No, of course not."

"You seem-"

"Evening, Chris." Ethan's voice broke the tension between the two adults, forcing Chris to acknowledge the older Winter sibling.

"Ethan." He curtly answered,a sharp nod of his head while presenting himself to stand taller than he is.

"I see you met Ellie."

"Yeah, we were talking-"

"Chris, come on in. Dinner's just about ready. Ellie, instead of standing there, why don't you make yourself useful and help with setting up the table?" Mia announced as she came around the corner, glancing between Chris and Ellie.

Ellie slightly nodded as she scurried off to help in the dining room, sidestepping around Ethan and Chris before she disappeared.

Chris watched her almost bolt into the other room, her form almost skittish by the way Mia had talked to her. He knew that Mia had the baby not that long ago; scratch that, six months ago, but he didn't know that Mia and Ellie were at one another's throats. He wasn't too sure if it had something to do with the postpartum or if there was some other form of contempt in there.

"Sorry about that, Chris. Mia's been running the kitchen for a while. Come on in."

"Thanks Ethan. How's everything?"

"Oh you know, not too bad. Been a little stressful with helping take care of Rosemary, on top of giving Mia whatever she needs -"

"I mean, how's Ellie? She looks like she's been through the ringer a few times." Chris interrupted, knowing that Ethan was trying to avoid talking about his sister.

"Oh, she's doing. Been a little trying because Mia's been tough on her."

"Maybe Mia should give Ellie some breathing room, she's only trying to help Ethan. Besides, she's only one person."

The men talked while crossing the living room as the table was just about set. Dinnerware of expensive china graced the solid wooden table, silverware gleamed in the dim lighting of the dining room. The fireplace glowed from its corner, warmth emitting from its encased compartment. Chris made his way to one end of the table, glancing at Ellie as she worked to put the last dish of food onto the table. Not once did she glance up, making him wonder if she was truly unhappy with the situation at home. If he needed to pull Ethan aside to talk, he would do so; he could sense that there was almost a wave of disappointment throughout the household. But, he didn't know the full story as to what was going on, so he kept quiet as he made his way to the chair.

"Wow, looks good."

"Thank you, Chris. It's ciorba de legume, a local recipe. Even have local wine, if you're interested." Mia offered as she set down the boiling pot on the trivet next to the freshly sliced pieces of bread.

"No, thank you Mia. Appreciate the offer, but I do have work in the morning. Can't have myself inebriated for my position." Chris declined the offer, sitting at one head of the table while Ethan took the other head.

Mia graciously took her seat next to Ethan, smiling as she began plating food on his dinner place. Ellie slowly made her way around the other side, sitting next to the imposing figure of Chris Redfield. She sank into her chair almost cautiously, almost as if she were afraid he would lash out or bite at her. Ellie breathed in deeply, noting that she was indeed next to her brother's boss. Albeit he had an impressive figure, it was against common sense to even consider forming a relationship with your relative's employer. She would not embarrass her brother tonight, she just had to keep it together for a little while longer. At least until dinner was over, then she could retreat to the safety of her bedroom. Her anxiety was slowly skyrocketing through her, nerves grated against each other. Her head began to pound, tension and stress from dealing with Mia earlier began to show its toll on her.

Ellie waited until everyone had their share of dinner before she proceeded to help herself. It did smell good, she wouldn't lie, but lately, Mia had been making a lot of local recipes that were almost suspicious. But hey, she wouldn't complain too much because she was starving.

"So, Chris. What brings you here tonight? Ethan wouldn't tell me much, he said he wanted to hear it from you." Mia questioned him, prodding her meal with her spoon while eyeing him with intrigue.

"Well, I hoped it would wait a little longer, but I wanted to ask before I returned to work. I was going to ask you for permission, Ethan." Chris began as he tucked into his dish, while looking at his acquaintance.

"Permission? What exactly would you need my permission for?"

"Permission to date your sister." Chris immediately answered, his eyes trained on Ethan with precision and determination.

All interactions ceased to move after that statement was made. The air around the adults was so thick with tension, not even a machete could cut it. Cutlery dropped in an instant, scratching and clanking against the delicate chinaware adoring the table. Ellie felt her world cease for a moment, stopping mid chew as she furrowed her brow. Did she hear right? Did she hear Captain Chris Redfield ask her brother for his permission to date her? She . . . she had to have misheard, right? There was no chance that her brother's employer could be interested in her, especially in a romantic matter.

"I-I-I'm sorry, what did you say?" Ellie stuttered quietly, not wanting to believe what was a possible slip of the tongue.

"Ellie, I would like to have permission to date you." Chris answered, staring at the chestnut hair woman with nothing but ardor in his eyes.

"Chris, you can't be serious. You're asking me to date my sister?!" Ethan exclaimed, trying to process what had just been asked of him.

"I am Ethan. I've been interested in your sister for quite some time, and I've been waiting until we could sit down and ask your permission."

"B-B-But Chris, you're my superior, I don't think it's a good idea to try to date anyone who works for you, especially their younger sister." Ethan stumbled, flabbergasted that Chris would dare ask him that question.

"Especially when we already know who the family disappointment is here. It'd be a true shame for you to waste yourself with her, Chris." Mia interjected, her gleaming eyes slithered over to Ellie with disdain.

"Hold on, Mia, I'm not sure I'm understanding -"

"I mean, why would you even consider attempting to date her of all people? She's a freak, not a normal person like us. She'll hex you if you're not careful." Mia sneered, knowing full well that no one would ever think of Ellie as anything but an outcast.

"Okay, I think we're getting a little off -"

"And besides, even if she did land herself a companion, they wouldn't last long. They would see her for what she really is - a snake who would steal everything from you. Your money, your house, your clothes, she'd take it all for herself and run at the very opportunity if it was there." Mia continued on, her true colors of her despise for Ellie spewing out of her like sharp knives to the core.

Ellie sat there dumbfounded, not knowing what she was listening to. Her heart broke at the mere thought that her sister in law was a loving, genuine person. But she was deceived, tricked by the image Mia had displayed for everyone to be fooled. The cruelty of her words brought her anxiety into full force, burying deep into her soul like an axe to the heart. How could she have been so blind, thinking that she was loved when in reality, she was only hated for something she was born with and couldn't control? She felt herself begin to shake, her hands jittering as she felt the tremors trail up her arms, and slowly seep throughout the rest of her body.

"Stop . . ." Ellie whispered, her forest eyes darkening with dread as she began to feel her orbs fill with tears.

"And furthermore, she could never truly make you happy at all, Chris. You'd only be wasting your time with her." Mia continued her tauntings, digging her spoon into the meal before stuffing her mouth with more of the once delicious food.

"Mia, please -" Ethan pleaded to his wife.

"I didn't ask for your input on my personal relationship, Mia. I would suggest you keep your comments to yourself." Chris interrupted, his temper slowly simmering to the surface, not liking the tone or words that Mia was saying about Ellie.

"I'm just trying to give you some friendly advice, Chris." Mia replied, smirking behind her wine glass while taking a full sip of the dark concoction.

"Stop!" Ellie soundlessly pleaded as she rested her face in her hands, trying her damned hardest to not lose her temper.

"Obviously you have no care for her personal being, Ethan. You take Mia's side over your own sister, and you haven't said your answer." Chris argued as he slowly stood up to full height, his thighs heavily clashing against the wood of the table. \

"I'm not taking anyone's side, Chris! And my answer is no!" Ethan argued as he too stood up from his seat, hands steadying both corners of the table in disbelief and anger.

"STOP IT!" Ellie shouted as she shot up from her seat while slamming both her hands on the tabletop, clenching her eyes shut.

A powerful burst of energy erupted from the young woman as the pulse ricocheted throughout the dining room, spreading throughout the downstairs of the home. The energy was powerful; ceramic, china plates, vases, picture frames shattered in an instant; windows, wine glasses, and mirrors spiderwebbed in cracks along their mirroring images. The surface of the table splintered from the impact, thick fragments of timber sprouted upward as if they were spears. Furniture was knocked around, food splattered the rug and flooring, knick knacks and ornaments flat on their sides in half broken objects. It looked as if a hurricane had exploded in its wake.

Ellie heaved as she tried to regain her composure. She skittered backwards from the table as she looked down at her hands, seeing that she only had minor cuts from the destruction she caused to the table. She huffed out short breaths as she jerked her head up, looking between her brother and Mia, who were huddling back against the fireplace in fear. Ethan had disappointment written in his eyes while Mia glared at her in contempt. Chris gazed at Ellie in bewilderment, not knowing what to say or what had transpired just now. He had his right hand on his belt, indicating that he had a weapon just in case something happened. Her breath hitched in her throat, her eyes surveying the damage she had caused. She didn't mean to; she didn't mean to lose herself, it was all an accident.

Anxiety, fear and shame crept through her whole being as Ellie gaped at everyone, slowly backing away from the table. \

"Ellie -" Chris coaxed, slowly peeling his hand off the gun hidden beneath his sweater.

Bolting from the room, Ellie swiftly made her escape through the living room, dashing through the entryway. Her feet numbly thudding up the stairs as she gasped for breath, tears running down her face in shame.

What had she done?
