He was enveloped in their arms. Within the hug he felt warm and safe. The two people he cared most about smiled down at him. He in turn smiled up at the two people he knew he'd never have to doubt loved him.
He wriggled free from their embrace and ran towards the door, grabbing a red cap en route.
"Mom, Dad! Come on! Let's go! Get in the car!"
His mother chuckled, fastening a golden star-locket around her neck. "Alright, alright, birthday boy. There's no rush."
"That's right," his father added, "We've got plenty of time." As if to illustrate the point he tucked his pocket watch away, the clock face disappearing into the fabric of his shirt.
"Yeah, but there's no time like the present, right?"
"Here's your present, Mamo-chan."
He unwrapped the package the pink-haired girl had handed to him. It was a red sports cap.
"Ah, thank you very much, Chibi-Usa." He placed it on his head, hardly needing to adjust it.
"And this is from me."
The young blonde woman opened her palm and extended her hand to him. This gift wasn't wrapped, but Mamoru was surprised to see it all the same.
"It's a little different I know, but after it got damaged the second time, thanks to a certain someone dropping in," the pink haired girl stared at her feet guiltily, "I thought why not spruce it up a bit?"
He picked up the pocket watch that now had a gold lid covering the clock face. Applying a little pressure with his thumb flipped the lid open, revealing the decorative night sky and stars pattern behind the clock hands. Affixed within the new inner lid of the watch was a picture of the three of them together.
Something distant stirred at the back of his mind. His next words were spoken slowly, almost carefully.
"…Why…Why don't we go for a drive?"
The pink haired girl seemed confused. In contrast, the young blonde seemed more clued-in, though she was clearly concerned.
"Mamo-chan…are you sure? Today is…" She caught his eye and understood. "Okay. Let's go for a drive. Together. And then, when we come back, we can dig into the cake. Alright?"
He nodded at her before, slightly abruptly, moving in closer to the pair.
Their arms enveloped each other. Within the hug he knew all three of them felt warm and safe. The two people he knew he'd never have to doubt cared for him smiled up into his face. He in turn smiled down at the two people he loved most in the universe.
The cap had been nice. The watch had been wonderful. But having them in his life, holding them in his arms, that was the best present he could've ever asked for.
