"Bruno, you need to look into the future. I need to know why Mirabel didn't get a gift. If this hurts our family, our home, we need to know why."
"Mamá…" Bruno trailed off
"Por favor mi hijo."
"Okay, mamá."
Bruno left his mother and walked towards his tower. He didn't want to conjure the vision, but he didn't want to disappoint his mamá either. What if it was a bad vision? Would he be blamed if it went wrong? Why didn't Mirabel get a gift?
"¿Tío Bruno?" A soft voice spoke from behind him. He instantly recognised the owner of the voice. Bruno turned around to see Mirabel standing there still in her dress from earlier that night. She looked so innocent, so unsure.
"Hey, Mira. está todo bien, pequeño?" He kneeled down to Mirabel and placed his hands on her shoulders giving them a small squeeze in hope to reassure her. She nodded gently before placing her small hands on his shoulders.
"Are you okay?" She asked with a small smirk on her face. Bruno let out a small laugh.
"I'm okay, kid." He smiled. "Why?"
"You were talking to yourself." She giggled. Bruno laughed along as he stood up.
"Was I?" Bruno placed his hand on his forehead before shaking his head. "Silly me." He let out a loud sigh before turning to the five-year-old once more. "You should get some rest, Mira." He turned to continue his way to his tower. Before a small hand tugged him back.
"Can you tuck me in tío Bruno?" He looked down at his niece. Her eyes gazed up at him. How could he say no to her?
"You don't want your mamá or papá to tuck you in?" He asked, watching as her body slumped.
"Por favor tío Bruno."
"Alright, just checking." Mirabel's smile brightened at his words and began to bounce on the balls of her feet before running towards her room. The nursery.
Bruno watched as she stopped by the door of the nursery. The smile that was forming on his face fell as he saw his niece. She turned to look at the rest of the family member's magical doors, then back at the nursery door. She slowly raised her hand to the doorknob and opened it up. He could feel the excitement fade from her body. And felt himself becoming disappointed and upset for her.
When he entered her room he found her sitting on the bed looking down at her hands. He leaned against the doorframe waiting to see what she was going to do next. She closed her eyes tight and clenched her hands into a fist.
"Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please!" She repeated over and over Each time with more desperation. "Please give me a gift!" She whispered looking up at the sky. Bruno felt his heart shatter at her words. He entered the room and sat next to her on the bed.
"Tío Bruno?" She began. "Why didn't I get a gift?" Tears formed in the corners of her eyes. He didn't know what to say. "Is it because I wasn't good enough?" She asked. Was she trying to break his heart?
"No Mirabel. You know what I think?"
"What?"
"I think that you are too good for a gift. You didn't need it anyway." He looked at Mirabel a smile on his face. But it disappeared once he saw her expression. "What?"
"Is Abuela angry at me?" She asked looking at him. Her eyes piercing his heart.
"No, I don't think so. I think she just worried." He tried to explain.
"Do you think I'll ever get a gift?"
"I don't know." He answered honestly.
"I know!" She said, her normal chipper voice back. "You can see if I get a gift in the future!" The way she looked up at him. So much hope in her eyes.
"I don't know Mira…"
"Please! Please tío Bruno, I need to know if I get a gift. I need to know if I make my family proud."
"I'll see what I can do okay."
"Thank you, tío Bruno!" She leapt at him and gave him a tight hug.
"Cualquier cosa para mi sobrina favorita." He gestured for Mirabel to hop into bed, which she did so happily. After getting comfortable under the covers and a kiss goodnight Bruno walks towards the door and flicks her nightlight on.
"By the way Mira," Her head turns towards him. "You don't need a gift to make this family proud. You are all this family needs. I don't need to look into the future to know that." He left the door open just a crack. Just the way she liked it.
"Bruno." The voice startled Bruno causing him to jump back a little.
"Oh, mamá, it's just you." He said, taking a breath out.
"What were you doing in Mirabel's room? Did you find the vision? Was it bad? Did Mirabel do something? I will talk to her then." Abuela started. Making her way into the nursery.
"No mamá. I haven't had the vision yet." He said.
"Then why were you in Mirabel's room, Bruno?"
"She wanted me to tuck her in. I was just about to head to my room to see the vision. Just like you asked." He explained. Abuela looked Bruno up and down trying to see if he was lying.
"Bruno…" She started cautiously. "Are you the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift?" Bruno was stunned. Did his mother really think that he would ever do anything to hurt his family? To hurt Mirabel?
"¡Mamá! Quiero que Mira tenga un regalo tanto como cualquier otra persona. Nunca la lastimaría. La quiero. Amo a esta familia." Bruno said loudly, emphasising each point.
"Entonces, ¿por qué no tiene un don, Bruno? Ella es la única sin un regalo. ¿Por qué?" Abuela yelled back.
"I don't know Mamá! I don't know why she wasn't given a gift!" Bruno yelled back at his mother.
"Don't you yell at me Bruno Madrigal." Her stern voice and stare caused him to lower his own. "Just figure out why Mirabel doesn't have a gift. Find out why this is happening to our miracle." She went to walk away before Bruno spoke up.
"What about her?" He asked causing his mum to stop giving a questioning look. "You are so worried about the miracle mamá, but what about her. She looked-" Bruno was cut off
"Enough Bruno. Do as I say. Go and see the vision. I will deal with it accordingly." She had the final word. He watched as she entered her room not sparing him a second glance. For what felt like the hundredth time that night Bruno let out a sigh, finally making his way to his tower.
