Chapter 1: A surprise.
The front door opens, Alan, Jake, Berta, Evelyn, Judith, and Herb enter the house. Alan is carrying an Urn.
Alan - Well, Charlie, you're back home.
Evelyn - Alan, he can't hear you, he's a pile of dirt.
Alan - Mom, please.
Evelyn - I need a drink.
She walks to the kitchen.
Berta - Don't worry, I'll only pour her the cheap stuff.
Alan - Thanks, Berta.
Berta goes to the kitchen.
Jake - This sucks.
Judith - Jake, language.
Jake - Mom, I'm not a kid anymore, stop bossing me around.
He goes and sits on the couch.
Herb - He's right you know.
Judith - Shut up, Herb.
She goes in the kitchen.
Alan - It sure was nice of Rose to let us keep his ashes.
Herb - Kinda weird, isn't it?
Alan - What is?
Herb - That she handled his funeral arrangements very quickly.
Alan - Like if she was trying to hide something?
They both think for a moment.
Both - Nahh!
Herb - What now?
Alan - Charlie's lawyer is supposed to stop by and give us paperwork, his last will and testament.
Herb - Hope you get the house.
Alan - Me too.
Everyone is in the Kitchen, Alan walks in, he's carrying a binder.
Alan - I got Charlie's will, everyone gather around.
He opens the binder, and starts reading.
Alan - To my long time housekeeper, Berta, you know I always appreciated you, very much.
Berta - That's it?
Alan - It says here that he's left you $5,000.00 in your bank account.
Berta - I miss that drunk son of a bitch!
Alan - To my nephew, Jake, even though you grew from a cute kid, to a whiny teenager, I enjoyed your company.
Jake - Who's he calling whiny?
Herb grabs the bowl of chips.
Jake - Hey, gimme my chips back.
Alan continues reading.
Alan - To Herb, what can I say, I love you big guy.
Herb - I like complements.
Alan - To my brother's ex-wife, Judith, I never really liked you.
She gives Alan a mean look.
Alan - To my Mother.
He stops reading.
Evelyn - Well? What did he say?
Alan - He didn't say anything. It's blank.
Evelyn - Typical.
Alan continues reading the will.
Alan - In regards to my assets, everything is covered, my lawyer will handle everything, the house goes to my brother, Alan.
He pauses reading.
Alan - That's good.
Evelyn - No, it's not. You can't stay here.
Alan - Mom, it's my house now.
Evelyn - You obviously can't afford to live here.
Alan - You don't know that.
Evelyn - But I know you.
Alan - Mom, this isn't really the time or place.
Evelyn (interrupting) - You can't even take care of yourself.
Alan - Please stop.
The doorbell rings.
Alan - This is my house now, and I am not gonna let you talk me into selling it!
With those words, Alan gets up and goes to answer the door, everyone follows him. He opens the door, and standing before him is a young man, possibly late twenties, maybe early thirties.
Walden - Is this the Harper Residence?
Alan - Yes.
Walden - My Name is Walden T. Schmid. I'm looking for Alan Harper.
Alan - That's my name.
Walden - Alan Jerome Harper? Works as a chiropractor?
Alan - I'm sorry, do I know you?
Walden - Daddy!
Walden hugs Alan. Everyone is shocked, except for Berta.
Berta - This just got interesting.
End of Chapter One.
