Standing on the Jolly Roger, we stare out onto the ocean. "Papa, I see a mermaid, perhaps Ariel" my seven year old daughter Spirit points out. "Love, your eyesight is superb" I compliment Spirit. Ariel waves hello to us and vice versa. Then she disappears underneath the waves. "Someday you will be a pirate and rule the ocean just like me" I predict. "I would rather be a pianist or time traveler" Spirit bursts my bubble. "You might change your mind someday" I bet. "Don't worry, Dad. I will follow in your footsteps" ten year old Josiah chimes in. "Me too" Henry adds. Emma, carrying a sleeping Baby Ellie, joins in all the fun.
Time Period: The Present Reality
Place: Ellie's Hospital Room
A frantic Spirit rushes into Ellie's hospital room. "Dr. Whale told me that Ellie was hospitalized. Is she alright?" Spirit panics. "I want my teddy bear" a frail Ellie requests. Emma takes the teddy bear out of her purse and gives it to Ellie. "Here you go, Ellie Faith" Emma comforts our daughter. "Ellie's health is failing, but she is hanging on in there" I assure Spirit.
