Tony apparently love to ride in style, and live extremely lavishly. Although I'm not really all that surprised, given he's a professional engineer with a business, and his side job as Iron Man.
When he came out about that several years ago, my mom was so proud of him. Tony was her older brother, she looked up to him, and he became her real life superhero.
That's not to say they had an easy relationship. Tony basically has ignored us as his family for years, even before he became Iron Man. He was always busy, always off to another country, and would send my moms calls to voicemail. But, my mom was never angry with him. She always understood his distant behavior.
"So kid," he pulled me out of my thoughts. "You excited to meet the rest of the team?" I inhaled a deep breathe. Ah, yes. The team.
"I'm more nervous than anything Unc, I'm not really...good...with people these days," I said quietly. He sat back in his chair, his chin resting on the palm of his hand, while he looked at me intently.
"Kid, I'll be honest with you. You're 18 years old. It's not the end of the world that a guy dumped you. Do I agree with how he did it? No, he was a piece of shit for how he did it. However, no one is worth throwing your life away like you've been. And you deserve someone better than a guy who's gonna leave you in the dirt, in the middle of the woods. How are you so sad? You should be angry. You should be infuriated actually, with how he treated you. You need to stop looking at him with those rose colored glasses and see him for what he was," his voice was intent, urging, and the emphasis on the "what" he was had me staring at him. There couldn't be any hidden meaning behind that...could there?
But I sat and thought about what he said. He wasn't wrong. Ed-he always made decisions for me. He never listened to what I wanted. He took my choices away from me. He left me in the woods to fend for myself. Honestly, I'm lucky something didn't eat me or maul me while I was out there.
Suddenly, I did feel angry. I felt angry at both him and myself. Yes, he was unfair in how he treated me, but I allowed him to treat me that way. I never stood up for myself, I never stood up for my beliefs, and I never fought for what I wanted. His word was always the final word. I looked at Tony as he let out a chuckle.
"There it is. There's the anger," he said. I couldn't help but smile. "I know a good way to get that out, Bells."
"Oh really?" I quirked an eyebrow. "How?"
"You're gonna start some training. Build some muscle on that scrawny little body of yours," he said matter of fact. I couldn't help but laugh.
"Me? Train? Unc, I'm a natural disaster in itself, I'd probably end up hurting myself or anyone that is unfortunate enough to be in the same room," I sighed.
"We will work on it, Bella," he implored. "Nat is a fantastic person to train you, and Banner will help with school. Cap's fighting style is a little out dated, but he would have something to help you with too. And I've already started programming equipment for you."
My eyes widened. "What?"
"Oh yeah, kid. You're gonna be one of us. You're family."
I opened my mouth to retort, but was cut off by a speaker overhead.
"Sir, we are arriving in New York in approximately 30 minutes."
"Thanks JARVIS," he said, flipping through a magazine. I let out a sigh and picked up my book I had been reading. I fingered the worn pages of my favorite, Wuthering Heights.I sat in silence thinking about what he said. Me? Training? Joining the team? I'm sure if dad knew about this he would order me home right away. But, there was a part of me that was fascinated with the idea. More than fascinated. Excited even. I could learn to protect myself, I could become stronger, I wouldn't be a weak link in every group I'm in anymore.
When the plane landed, we grabbed my bags and started walking off the plane. There were people already waiting on the platform, and I stepped slightly behind Tony. I recognized them from TV. This was the team.
"Cap, Clint, help my lovely niece with her bags will you?" Tony said as he threw my duffle at the blonde one. I scanned over the team for a moment, taking them all in.
I knew Nat was beautiful, I had seen her on TV, but in real life, she was even more stunning, her hair was a rich auburn red, her face angular but soft, and her eyes shone in the sunlight. She was tall and statuesque, and while she wasn't Rosalie level beauty, she was beautiful.
Clint was older, his eyes were slightly worn but had a warmth to them. He stood closer to Nat, wearing mostly black, his dark hair cropped short. He reminded me of jasper in a way, but he was softer in the face.
Next to Clint was Banner, his square rounded face and glasses on the bridge of his nose. His hair was slightly curled, and he took on the role of scientist to the T. He reminded me of my 9th grade science teacher to be honest.
My steps faulted for a millisecond when my eyes landed on the remaining member. This, was Captain America. Steve Rogers.
He was dressed casually in jeans and a tight fitted grey t-shirt. His hair was perfectly patted down, shiny in the sunlight. He was tall, and had a lean muscular build. His muscles flexed slightly when he caught the duffle bag and my eyes couldn't help but zero in on them for just a moment. I tore my eyes away from them to look at his eyes. They were...a stunning shade of blue.
I felt a blush creeping up my neck and spreading across my face, so I quickly looked away, using my hair to hide as a curtain.
"Classy as ever, Tony," Steve retorted. Tony just shrugged in response and put his hand on my shoulder.
"Bella, this is the team. Nat, Clint, Bruce, and Cap. Team, this is my favorite niece, Bella."
"I'm your only niece," I retorted, rolling my eyes. He smirked.
"That makes you my favorite," he said indignantly. I laughed a little bit, and Nat walked up to me.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," her voice was soft and rich, like honey. She took me in a soft hug, and leaned back to look at me. "I promise, he's always this much of an ass." I laughed.
"Oh don't worry, I know," I winked. She smiled and stepped back. Clint and Banner both took my hand, welcoming me to New York. Steve stepped up and took my small hand in his large one, and I felt a buzz. Something I haven't felt in a long while. I looked into his eyes as he shook my hand.
"Miss Bella, it's great to meet you," his eyes twinkled. He was so polite. He really was a man from another time.
"Just Bella please, none of that miss nonsense," I smiled as I shook his hand back. He smiled kindly.
Tony wrapped his hand around my shoulder, and I tore my eyes away to him. He spread out his other arm in a welcoming gesture.
"Well kid," he said. "Welcome to New York."
