Chapter 1: A Good Match
"Another day… another bust…" A brown-skinned girl sighed, glancing at her phone for the third time in the last minute. Said girl was sitting amongst the crowds packed inside the Middleton mall food court. Her head rested in her palm, a melancholy expression upon her face. She'd gotten herself a sandwich, but with her current situation, it wasn't looking all that appealing at the moment.
"Come on Monique, you're taking this way too hard!" admonished her redheaded friend sitting next to her.
The ravenette looked over to her right, one eyebrow raised. Even if she'd only known the girl for a few months, she could easily call her her best friend. She'd felt that way ever since the moment she'd met her, the sense you get when you meet someone for the first time and you instantly know that you're going to be friends. "I don't think that I am, Kim… Or, did you happen to miss the part where he just stood me up and then ghosted me?" Monique shot back, a fair amount of bitterness in her tone.
Monique had always been a pretty fierce character, always speaking her mind and wielding a no-nonsense attitude…
"So, he isn't answering you… so what? You're the one who's always told me that if a guy can't handle you, then he isn't worth your time!"
Having her own words thrown back at her did annoy Monique more than she cared to admit, but come on! This was coming from Kim Possible, after all! She was a world saving hero, had super strength, and enough crazy skills to warrant some guys being terrified of her. But if Monique compared herself to her friend? She was just a plain, pretty girl with a great fashion sense. …even if that last bit was pretty special too.
"I guess you're right… but only because those are some really inspiring words you just gave me!" Monique smiled at her redheaded friend, even if the action felt a bit hollow to her.
"Yeah, yeah… I don't normally have these kinds of pearls of wisdom to offer, but even I can surprise sometimes!" Kim responded, a roll of her eyes at her friend's disguised self-praise.
Monique was just thankful that her friend hadn't noticed how she truly felt. The prospect of Kim, of all people, discovering that the fashionista had even more dating issues than she did was mortifying! Monique wasn't sure if it was her personality, her looks, or just the fact that she was around Kim so regularly… Oh well, knowing the answer wouldn't change the fact that she had a bigger problem finding a guy than Kim-freaking-Possible. Just thinking about it put a bad taste in Monique's mouth, she couldn't even glance at her food anymore, she'd completely lost her appetite.
"Man… that was rough, you guys wouldn't believe the line I had to go through to get this!" A blonde teen joined the two girls, pulling up a seat and putting his try down. Said blonde teen rubbed his hands together in anticipation of the feast that was about to begin.
"Ron, could you maybe try and eat something healthy for once? Or, at least cut down on the portions? I'm getting nauseous just looking at that…" The redheaded teen looked away, as if to emphasize her point.
"No can do, KP! the Ron-man needs his fuel, so he can be an awesome sidekick!" the blonde teen declared with pride, the little mole rat standing on his shoulder agreeing with him.
"Ron, I don't know how many times I've said it. You're not a sidekick… you're my partner." The redheaded teen heroine looked more than a little annoyed at his words, she'd already lost count of the number of times she'd explained that. Kim was honestly about to snap at him… maybe then he'd understand.
The blonde boy just shrugged her words off, like he usually did. Even if she'd declared it over and over, that still didn't change what everyone else saw… Villains calling him Sidekick, or Buffoon. Those they helped forgetting his name, or calling him something completely different! At that point, it was better to be called Sidekick… Shockingly, that was the less intense blow to his already badly-wounded pride.
Monique couldn't help but stare at the two childhood friends, a look of fascination on her face. She marveled at the way they seemed to fit one another. …and to think, they'd been like this since preschool? It was a testament to how good they had been to one another. The ravenette wasn't sure if she could have handled being friends with Ron at that age, he'd probably been even more excitable as a kid than he was now. It was just another example of just how strong Kim was mentally.
Just thinking about the two friends reminded Monique of the guy who'd stood her up. 'I don't even want to recall the name of that idiot…' She mentally erased him from her thoughts, her eyes opening once more to see Ron. The blonde was sat in front of her, busily eating the greasy slop on his tray. His eyes suddenly focused on her and he swallowed, wiping his hands before pulling something out of his pocket.
"Ta-da! Look at what I have here!" He waved two tickets.
"What are these for?" Kim asked, very interested in what her partner was up. It was really out of character for him to try and organize something for them, but really nice nonetheless.
"Oh, these little things? Nothing much… only front row seats to Pain King's next match!" the blonde teen exclaimed, a big smile on his face.
"Ah…" The interest and wonder quickly vanished from his childhood friend's face. "Ron… you know that I'm not really a fan of those fights…" the redheaded heroine reminded him, sighing. She was about to agree to go with him, when he cut her off.
"Um… KP? Sorry, but I wasn't planning on inviting you this time…" the blonde teen explained, his tone apologetic.
Both girls looked more than a little confused at his statement, glancing at one another. 'Is Ron going to ask some random girl, or maybe one of the cheerleaders?' Monique mused. She was more than a little surprised by this turn of events, what shocked her even more was Kim's expression. The worldwide heroine was clearly a bit annoyed, for starters. There was also something else there that the ravenette teen didn't recognize.
It made them both wonder… who was he planning to take along?
Ron's eyes shot over to Monique. "So… what do you say?" he asked.
His question was followed by a short silence. Said ravenette looked at Kim, then back at the blonde. "Are-are you asking me?", she pointed at herself.
He nodded in response. "Yeah! We both like wrestling, and Kim always complains if I ask her to go… So, I thought it'd be fun to go with someone who would actually have fun!" The blonde teen moved a bit closer to the fashionista. "Between you and me? I think she hates wrestling, or something…", he winked at her.
"Ron, I'm still here… Also, I'm not deaf…" Kim replied dryly.
"You see! Even just talking about it next to her makes her a hater…" he teased, glancing at the redhead.
"Still here Ron… Also, I don't 'hate' wrestling. …I'm just not a fan, like you are…" Kim defended hotly, still somewhat annoyed.
Monique couldn't help but giggle at the mild bickering between the two partners. They always had such good chemistry, in pretty much anything they did. Whether it was on their missions, or off them… they had this mojo that made them work best with one another. Like opposites that completed each other, or something.
"That's an understatement, if I've ever heard one…" Ron turned back to his ravenette friend. "So, what do you say Mon?"
In any normal situation, she would have said yes almost instantly. An offer to go see a wrestling match with one of her besties? …and with front-row seats, no less? This was DEFINITELY something that she wouldn't want to miss! …the only issue was the face Kim was making right now.
"You don't mind, right KP? Mon and I going to see it?" he asked.
Kim thought for a second, then looked away. "Fine… I don't mind, we can go next time… But, you'll keep your Ronunicator on, right?" she pressed, worried about some villain feeling the need to cause some trouble.
"Sure thing, KP! So, what do you say Mon? Are you up for some righteous Steel Toe action?" he asked again.
"You know what? I think I am!" the ravenette teen finally agreed, won over by his happy expression.
"Oh yeah, this is what I'm talking about! It's going to be awesome! Now, all I need is a second helping so I can get ready for it!" Ron exclaimed, excusing himself and walking back to order some more food.
"Say, Kim… Just to make sure… you really don't mind?" the ravenette asked.
"Mind what? You and Ron going to see some wrestling match?" the Possible teen asked, receiving a nod for confirmation. "No… why would I?"
"I mean, you looked pretty annoyed when he said he wanted to go without you…" Monique pointed out. She could clearly see that Kim had really wanted to go with Ron, if only to spend more time with him. It was odd, to say the least… Kim most definitely saw Ron as more than a friend. Hell, she'd broken things off with Josh more than a month ago. Kim hadn't gone for any of the many pretty boys that seemed more than a little interested in her now, the redhead simply ignoring them all to focus on her best friend… Monique wouldn't have normally been jealous of Kim for having the attention of most of the boys, if not for her own faltering love-life.
"I wasn't… I don't mind…" Kim answered back.
'She was totally thinking he was going to ask one of the cheerleaders, or a senior…' The ravenette could read between the lines, ready to point out her friend's jealousy. Hopefully Monique would get to see her friend get embarrassed, or even admit to the truth! Unfortunately that opportunity was cut short, Kim apparently noticing someone and moving to leave the table in a hurry.
"I'll talk to you later!" Kim shouted, before moving away.
Monique could only stare in confusion as her friend walked over and started talking with some olive-skinned, black-haired pretty-boy that she didn't recognize. 'Are you kidding me? And here I thought that she'd finally make a move on Ron…' Maybe Kim would never take a shot at Ron, did she even like him at all?
"It was even worse this time! I couldn't even make it to- Where's KP?" Ron questioned, unable to spot his childhood friend. Monique pointed behind the blonde, Ron turning around to look.
They both watched the redheaded heroine talk for a bit with the new and unfamiliar boy for a few seconds. Monique still didn't recognize him, even if Ron seemed to recognize him. "You know him, Ron?"
The blonde boy looked away from the pair. "Y-Yeah, I do…" he answered reluctantly.
Monique could only stare at Kim from her spot, she couldn't believe that her best friend had managed to snag yet another pretty-boy. When had she even had the time? She shook her head, 'forget about that…' Monique glanced towards Ron, he didn't look angry or annoyed… Did that mean he didn't care either, or was he just suppressing his negative feelings? "Well… So, are we still up for that fight?" Monique asked. The way things were looking, both she and Ron needed to get away from what was annoying them. This match could prove to be a very good distraction.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Night had already come, and with it the match that she had agreed to attend. Monique was dressed a bit differently, sporting a snug, light-blue short-sleeved shirt. It was complemented by a tight pair of jeans that made her look both casual and as fashionable as she always was. …and hey! Who knew? Maybe she'd meet mister right tonight! Stranger things had happened!
The ravenette girl arrived at the location both of them had agreed to meet, seeing a lot of people who'd already arrived proceeding to move inside. Monique glanced at her watch for the fourth time, growing increasingly worried as the seconds passed. She was seriously considering calling Ron to see if he'd forgotten about her, or if something had forced him to ditch their plan. But as she moved to grab her phone, she heard a strangely familiar voice calling out to her.
"Hey Mon!" shouted a boy as he ran towards Monique, stopping right in front of her. "Whew… I made it after all!" he exclaimed, taking a few heavy breaths.
The fashionable teen stared at the boy. He was wearing a dark blue shirt that showed off his very robust abs, despite it not being tight at all. It was matched with a pair of black jeans, a black belt almost blending seamlessly with it. The newcomer's head was topped with bright, blonde hair that looked oh so familiar to her. 'Do I know him?' she wondered, unable to recall ever meeting a blonde hottie like this before. But, at the moment, Monique couldn't care less about that. After all, she wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth…
"Hey there, handsome… been waiting long to meet me?" she asked delightedly. As she stared at him, she couldn't help but think that she DID know him from somewhere. How on Earth could she have forgotten this very fine piece of-?
"Ah… I was going to ask you the same thing. I was worried that you'd be pissed at me, or something…" the blonde boy admitted, scratching his head.
"Now why would I-" Her thoughts cut off completely, her brain finally managing to put the clues together. "R-Ron…" she stuttered, her eyes opening in shock. "I-I would never be angry at you for s-something as silly as that…" she quickly assured him.
"Wow… never expected that. KP usually gets angry with me, or even preaches to me about planning my schedule better… Only shows how awesome you are, Mon!" the blonde boy declared, glancing at his phone.
Monique was practically experiencing a mental breakdown at this point. Her face was bright red, her body turned away from him. How could she look him in the face, after calling him a hottie? Him! Ron Stoppable! Kim's partner and best friend! He wasn't a hottie! He-he was just… Ron! The blonde goofball that she got along so well with, one of her best friends! One of the few people she could talk to freely, who she enjoyed spending time with… She'd even called him handsome to his face! Her only saving grace was the fact that he didn't seem to notice how she'd greeted him.
Monique's hand was suddenly grabbed, Ron beginning to pull her away from the spot she'd been rooted to. The ravenette could only stare in confusion as said blonde teen dragged her along behind him.
"Mon I know you said you're not mad, but we won't be able to see the opening if we don't hurry" Ron explained. He handed both tickets to the employee at the entrance, both of them moving inside.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
"Wow, did you see that?!" Ron squealed excitedly.
"Hell yeah! That was awesome!" the girl responded, both of them howling at the sight. The ravenette couldn't help but jump up and down in her spot, watching one of her favorite wrestlers slam his opponent into the ground. She could honestly say that she was having a blast!
Tasty, unhealthy junk food? Check!
Great spot? Check!
The best company she could ever want? Surprisingly, that was also a big check!
Her initial interactions with her blonde friend had filled her with trepidation. However, she'd learned very quickly that as long as she didn't stare at him for too long, her thoughts regarding his new… appearance seemed to remain under control. So far, everything seemed to be going great! She was honestly having fun. Monique could even swear that the blonde next to her really was Ron, and not a handsome clone of some sort.
'I really need to stop thinking about him like that!' she amended in her mind, glancing at him once more. 'But, do I really?' Monique wondered. What did it matter if one of her male friends looked really handsome? Did that make him a different person? No, it really didn't…
…
"That… was… awesome!" Ron declared, waving his hands in the air. Monique smiled at his silly antics.
The match having finished, both teens walked out with the rest of the crowd. The fight had been one of the best ones they'd ever seen.
"It was! And here I thought that the rumors about Steel Toe having a broken arm were true! But, after that match? Lies, all of them! He just demolished Pain King!" the ravenette shouted happily. She even mimicked a few of the moves they'd watched, before bursting out in laughter.
"I have no idea where you even heard that… Anyway, I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it!" the blonde sidekick said.
"Why wouldn't I enjoy it?" she asked, the statement puzzling her. "Ron, that was an awesome match right there! Seriously? I'm not sure how this could be any better!" the girl replied honestly.
"Oh, no reason! I'm just glad, you know!" the blonde teen shot back, glancing away from her for probably the first time this evening.
It made her wonder what exactly was on his mind… and why he'd felt the need to lie to her. Oh yeah, she was fully aware that he was hiding something from her… The real question was, what?
'Maybe he's finally noticed just how good I look?' The thought amused her, a sort of innocent revenge on her part. After just how awkward he'd made her feel at the start of the evening, she couldn't help but enjoy the idea. Said ravenette girl moved a bit closer to him, enveloping his hand in hers.
"Wha- Mon?" The blond sidekick didn't have time to elaborate before she'd closed the distance between them.
"Ron… you know you're a terrible liar, right?" the girl chided, looking quite cocky. "So, why not just fess up to whatever it is you're keeping from me?"
The blonde teen looked more than a little guilty, thinking things over before sighing in defeat. "Fine… I guess I should have seen this coming… Man, you're really sharp Mon!"
'No, I'm not… you're just WAY too easy to read…' The ravenette simply smirked at him. "You know it! Now, what sort of juicy stuff have you been hiding from me?"
"I would hardly call it 'juicy'-" the blonde teen tried to deflect.
"Just say it already…"
"It's just that I noticed that you seem a little down lately, I just… wanted to make you smile…" the blonde teen admitted, embarrassed at having to explain his motivations.
"Huh? You-you wanted to make me smile?" As soon as the words left her lips the teen instantly turned red. "That's i-it? That's the reason?"
Ron stared at her with a serious look on his face. "What do you mean by that? You're my friend Monique, and you're important to me!" the blonde boy assured her, looking her in the eyes. "I may not know what the reason is… but I'll try my hardest to make sure you feel better!"
…
The ravenette girl could only glance at him for a few seconds, wrapping her arm around his shoulder and pulling him into her side. "Oh, Ron… I didn't know you cared so much! But I guess that's on me, for forgetting how good a friend you are!" the girl admitted, laughing loudly.
"So… did it work?" he asked, his tone weak.
"Sure did! I'm feeling SO good right now!" the girl assured, a bit louder than she'd intended to. How could she not? Her blonde friend had been so worried about her, even if she'd tried to hide her depression. For some reason, Monique felt more than a little self-conscious at his attention. "Man… why can't I find a guy like you, Ron?" she commented without thinking.
"Um… Mon? I am a guy like me, last time I checked…" the young monkey master replied dryly.
"I know, I know!" she said, waving him off. "So, what's next on our plans for today?" Monique asked, Ron's expression darkening. "What? If you wanted to make me smile, you should know that you'll need to deliver a lot more than this!"
"Mon, you're already smiling…" Ron pointed out.
"That's just your imagination! Now, let's go!" she shouted, pulling him away from the arena. Sometimes, it was good to have such great friends!
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Morning finally came, the sun piercing through the curtains. The sunbeam climbed as the minutes passed, until it reached the foot of a small bed. From there it rose up to meet its target.
"Mmm…" mumbled a sleeping Monique, the light disturbing her peaceful slumber. She turned her head towards her pillow, luxuriating in the pleasant feeling of her soft bed. She remained motionless for several minutes, nearly falling asleep once more, before she finally decided to get up and start her day.
Her head poked out from beneath the blanket, looking for her phone on her nightstand. 'Dead battery?' She sighed and looked around for her alarm clock.
It was still functional, indicating that she still had over an hour before she had to arrive at school. The knowledge calmed her down, Monique reassured that she'd have an opportunity to charge the small device. Moving out of her bed was a bit harder than it usually was, the outside world so cold in comparison to her warm sheets.
She decided to simply stay in bed, enjoying its comfort for a few minutes more. Then, she'd take a shower and officially start her day. The ravenette was feeling very relaxed after her little outing with her blonde friend, she felt much better than before. 'I guess he DID keep his word.' Thanking about him brought a smile to her face.
Suddenly, a sound came from her bed. "Mmm…"
…
'What? Since when does my bed wake up with me?' the fashionable teen mused. Call her slow in the morning if you want… but she was more than a little confused by the familiar voice.
Her head turned to stare at the face of the very same blonde teen that she'd watched wrestling with only a few hours ago. …and from what she could see, he wasn't dressed…
Her mouth opened, a scream boiling out of her lips.
