Jack remembers rain. A lot of rain.

He remembers the smell of her hair, as he rested his cheek gently against the top of her head. Salt, sand and Kate: scents unique to her and her alone. He remembers her gasp of surprise as he drew her into his arms and held her against his chest tightly, painful but not quite. The sudden need for closeness overwhelms him; the need to touch her, have her. He remembers the look in her eyes, a look which matched his own -- fear and something else, too undefined to understand.

He remembers her admission of what she did, spilling from her lips, raw and heartrending. Wayne and Diane and fire and pain. So much pain. He remembers how she cried; heaving, choking sobs came from deep from inside her chest. Ten years worth of tears stream down her face, a cathartic flood. Afterward, he pats her gingerly as hiccoughs wrack her slender frame.

He remembers disgust overpowering him -- not at her, but at himself. Shame for acting the way that he has, cold and aloof, turning to Ana to suppress the jealously that crept into his selfish heart when he saw Kate with Sawyer.

He remembers the companionable silence that they shared huddled close to one another, both needing the touch of skin, the feel of warmth, the caress of lips. He remembers how fingers stroked gently in the dancing fire-light, casting strange shadows against the bark of gnarled trees. He remembers the whispery crackling of the fire, her lingering sniffles, the rustling of a bush…

The crack of heavy footsteps.

The sound of someone bursting from the foliage.

Kate's alarmed scream.

The echoing shot of a gun.

A gun.

Rain…

Kate…

He remembers no more.
