Warning: Eraser-Mic. Cussing.
Chapter 2: Great, I'm blind.
Shota Aizawa's POV.
I woke up early, and noticed that I was on my couch. On my right Hizashi was snuggled into my arm, and on my left Nico was asleep on my lap. I smiled. Nico looked so carefree when he was asleep. I felt Hizashi stir, and look up at me.
"Morning Sho," he said sleepily.
"Morning 'Zashi." I said, and leaned against him. he noticed the teen asleep on me, and smirked.
"He's so cute when he's asleep." He said. I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah. but when he's awake he's always unhappy." I said quietly. Hizashi frowned thoughtfully.
"Well, should we wake him up?" he asked. I shrugged.
"Probably." I said. I pushed lightly on his shoulder.
"Nico, time to get up." I said. he shifted, and muttered sleepily.
"Not time yet Shigi." He murmured, and snuggled closer. Who is Shigi?
"Nico, get up." I said, and pushed his shoulder again. He moved, and opened his sightless eyes. Then, he fell off the couch, and scrambled to the wall.
"What?" he asked, blindly staring around the room. "Where am I?" he asked. I sighed.
"Nico, you're in my house." I said. he relaxed at the sound of my voice, and the memories of last night seemed to come back.
"Oh yeah. I forgot." He said, shaking his head. I smiled sadly; the poor kid had been through too much at such a young age.
Nico's POV.
I couldn't see. why couldn't I see?!
"What?" I said, trying to figure things out. "Where am I?" I asked. I heard a sigh.
"Nico, you're in my house." Aizawa said. wait, last night. Shoot.
"Oh, yeah. I forgot." I muttered, shaking my head to clear it.
"Nico," I heard Aizawa say. Fabric shifted giving me a vague idea of where he was. "Who is 'Shigi'?" he asked. shit.
"What do you mean?" I asked, hoping it was a guess.
"When I tried to wake you up, you said "Not time yet Shigi." Who is Shigi?" he asked again. I sighed.
"Shigi is the name of the person I've been staying with for the past month or so." I admitted. "He lives in a one-bedroom house above a shop, and we hit it off. He offered to let me stay with him. um, he only has one bed so we usually share. Sometimes, I sleep in, and he wakes me up for school." I half lied. He only woke me up when I was passed out dead drunk. Aizawa didn't need to know that.
"I see." he said. I sighed, and laid back against the wall.
"Well, all of the students are moving into dorms the day after tomorrow. Are you going to as well?" Aizawa asked.
"That sounds good. Although, I might need some help as I can't see." I stated, and half smiled.
"I'll enlist someone to help you if I can't do it myself." He said. I nodded. Then, I heard a door open, and a person walking toward us. I stiffened, and waited against the wall.
"Oh, Shinso. Good to see you're awake." Present Mic said, to the person. Shinso, I knew that name. this was the guy with the weird eyes and hair that I'd met the once, and again at the sports festival.
"Um, why is Nico di Angelo at our house?" he asked, sounding rather confused.
"Nico needed some help. Why don't you go make us some breakfast?" Aizawa told him.
"Ok dad." He said, and went into the kitchen. Wait, dad?
"Dad?" I asked.
"Yeah, Shinso's parents died, and we adopted him as our son." Hizashi said quietly. Oh, ok then. That was nice of them.
"Alright. Well, I don't want to impose on your family." I said, and stood.
"You're not going anywhere like that. Nico, you can't see. sit your ass down." Aizawa said sternly. I sighed, and sat.
"Fine." I said, and stared blindly out.
"What happened to your eyes?" Shinso asked, coming over with something that smelled rather nice.
"Nothing permanent. I'm blind for the next like, 62 hours." I answered.
"Wow. That's got to suck." He said, and placed the food on the floor in front of me.
"Yeah, just a little." I responded, and felt around for the plate. I felt a hand on mine, and it moved my hand a little to the left, and set it down.
"Here, I made toast." He said. no one was ever this kind to me. ever. Why was he being so nice? Was it because his parents were watching? Was he just a genuinely kind person? A tear slipped from my eye, but I stopped it with my hand.
"Thank you." I said, and picked up the toast. I ate slowly, relishing the fact that someone wanted to be kind to me. I finished my toast, and stood up taking the plate with me. using the sound of clinking plates as a guide I made my way to the kitchen.
"Hi." I stated, and walked over to where I guessed the sink to be. There was a slow drip of water plinking. I felt for the handle, and turned the water on. I rinsed my plate off.
"Oh, you don't have to do that." Hizashi said. I turned and smiled.
"No worries. This is something I'm very good at." I stated, drying my plate with a towel I found near the sink. I heard someone get up, and by the way they walked I guessed it was Shinso.
"Here." He said, and handed me his plate. I smiled.
"Thanks." I washed his plate off too. Aizawa stood, and handed me two plates. I washed them off too, and placed all four plates on the counter top.
"Well, you should probably get to work decorating your new dorm." Aizawa stated. I frowned a little.
"But I can't see." I stated.
"I'll help if you'd like." Shinso stated. I turned and looked towards where I assumed him to be.
"Really?" I asked.
"Sure. Sorry if it comes out weird though. I don't know what you want it to look like." He said.
"No worries. I can always fix it once I get my sight back." I pointed out.
"Yeah, that's true. Well, let's get going." Shinso said, and took my elbow gently. He led me out the door. We walked for a while before he stopped.
"Where do you want to go first?" he asked.
"I'm not sure. I need some clothes, and that's about it. I have money with me in my bag." I said pointing out the backpack I was wearing.
"Ok, let's go to a clothing store then." Shinso led me to a clothing store. There was a lot of rustling, and I held on tighter to his arm. The noise was jacking with my sense of direction.
"What kind of clothing would you two gentlemen be looking for?" an assistant asked.
"I'm looking for casual wear in black or deep red." I stated, turning my sightless eyes on the clerk. He gasped.
"Not to be rude sir, but are you blind?" he asked.
"Yes. I got hit with a stray quirk, and can't see for a while." I lied, and put on a fake smile. "That's why I have my brother helping me." I lied again. I didn't want anyone to think we were dating or anything. Shinso snickered.
"Brother?" he asked.
"What? Can you think of a better excuse?" I whispered back.
"Nope." He said, popping the 'p'. the assistant came back.
"Here you are sir. A fine selection of clothing for casual wear." He said, and handed me a bundle of clothes.
"What do you think Hitoshi?" I asked, turning to Shinso.
"They're nice, I guess. I don't really wear black." He said. I smiled.
"Thank you. Let's check out." I said. Shinso led me to the register where I handed him my wallet and told him to pay for the clothes. He did so, and we left the clothing store.
"Well, do we need anything else?" Shinso asked, as we stopped to rest on a bench.
"Hmm, do I?" I said, thinking out loud. "No, I don't think I need anything else. Unless they have some kind of goth decoration store."
"They do actually." Shinso said with a chuckle.
"Let's go!" I said, standing up.
"Alright. This way." He said, taking my arm again. We walked away, and came into another store.
"Hello, what kind of spooky décor are you two looking for?" the clerk asked.
"Hi, I'm looking for some bedroom décor. Do you happen to have any black iron candlesticks? Or any torches?" I asked, turning my white eyes on him.
"Yes, we do! Right this way!"
Shinso and I spent a few more hours shopping, and getting room decorations. Then, we went to the UA dorms.
"Are they nice?" I asked.
"Very." He replied. we went inside, and he led me to my room. I was on floor 4 on the end next to Bakugou. How nice. Shinso helped me carry all my new stuff up to my room. Then, I set things up.
"Thanks for the help today." I said, when we'd finished.
"No problem." He dismissed. "But, if you ever need some help, I'm here." He said, and left my room. I sighed, and laid down on my new black bedspread. The others would arrive in two days. I'd have my sight back that night. I fell asleep.
I woke up to someone knocking on my door.
"Who is it?" I called out.
"Shinso!" he called back.
"Oh, come in." I said, and sat up. I heard my door open, and then shut. The smell of food hit my nose.
"I, um, I made dinner. Dad said I should bring you some so that you didn't hurt yourself trying to cook blind." He said, placing the plate in my hand. I smiled.
"Thank you Shinso." I said.
"Please, call me Hitoshi." He said. I smiled.
"Hitoshi it is." I decided, and dug in. I finished the delicious meal he brought, and set the plate on my nightstand.
"You know, today has been a lot of fun. I like having you as a brother." Hitoshi said. I almost died of shock in that moment.
"You, you do?" I asked, trying to keep from crying tears of joy.
"Yeah, I've never had a sibling. I was an only child." He said. I looked blindly towards my bed.
"I had an older sister once. She died." I said, and closed my eyes. The memory of Bianca saying that she was going with the hunters arose in my mind. I shook that thought off. "I have a younger half-sister, but I cut off connection with her. not because of her, or anything she did. I love her." I smiled softly at the memory of Hazel.
"Why'd you cut off connection?" Hitoshi asked. I sighed.
"She thinks I'm dead." I stated.
"What?! Why?" he demanded.
"Because I wrote a suicide note. I actually wanted to die. But instead I came here." I stated forlorn. "What I wouldn't give to see her again." I said, staring unseeing at the wall.
"Well, I'll be your brother." He said. I smiled at him.
"Thanks Hitoshi. I need someone like you in my life." I said.
"Well, I have to get home soon or they'll think I got lost. See you later!" he said, and left my room. The smile fell off my face as I laid back in my bed. Hitoshi shouldn't want to be my brother. I'm a messed-up demon child that is currently blind. Who would want to be family with someone like me?!
I went back to sleep. Hopefully, I wouldn't have bad dreams.
No such luck.
I saw my friends get killed in front of me one after the other. Then, it showed Shigaraki's disappointed face. As he stabbed me through the chest. I went demon form and murdered him.
Then thank the gods I woke up. I was completely covered in sweat, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I sat up, and walked to the bathroom only tripping once. I turned on the shower, and took a quick rinse. After that, I felt through the clothes in my closet, and put on something that felt nice and soft. I laid back down in bed. I had no idea what time it was.
I laid there for at least an hour before I heard people moving. I got out of bed, and went to the door.
"Who's there?" I asked.
"Oh, hi Nico." Hitoshi said. I sighed in relief.
"Hitoshi. How are you today?" I asked.
"I'm alright. You?"
"Tired." I stated, and wrapped my arms around my middle. "Did you need something?" I asked.
"No. just came to see how you were doing." He said brightly.
"Thanks, I'm alright. By the way, what time is it?" I asked.
"It's barely 6." He responded. Wow. I was up early.
"Ok, I'm going to go down to the lobby, and just stay there all day." I said, walking towards where I remembered the elevator to be. My left hand was on the wall to keep me from falling. We went down in the elevator together.
"Ok, be careful." He said. I heard the door shut behind him. I sighed, and felt my way to the couch. I sat down, and let my thoughts wander. No one was going to be here today other than the movers who were putting people's belongings in their rooms.
At some point I fell asleep on the couch. I was then rudely awoken by someone shaking me rather violently. I sprang up, and fell into a defensive pose blindly trying to guess who it was.
"What do you want?" I demanded.
"Nico, it's just me." I heard the voice of Aizawa state. I relaxed my stance, and took a step closer.
"Professor?" I asked, trying to figure out where he was.
"Yes. I'm over here." I felt a hand on my elbow. I turned in that direction.
"Hi." I stated, crossing my arms over my middle, and 'staring' him down.
"Have you eaten anything today?" he asked.
"I'm not hungry." I said.
"Nico, you didn't answer the question." He stated.
"No. I haven't." I told my teacher. I heard a sigh of disappointment.
"Just because you're blind doesn't mean you get out of eating. Now, you are going to come with me; Hizashi's making spaghetti." Aizawa announced, and took my elbow again. I walked with him to his home which was just a short walk from UA.
"Dad, he's home!" I heard Shinso announce when Aizawa opened the door. "Nico's here too!" he added on when he must've seen me.
"Hi Hitoshi." I said, sitting down where I remembered the couch being.
"Hi. How was your day?" he asked, sitting next to me.
We spent the time before dinner was ready just discussing our days. He had a much more interesting day then me.
"Kids! Dinner's ready!" Hizashi yelled from the kitchen. I stood, and walked in following the same route as last time I was over. Hitoshi placed my hand on the back of a chair. I sat down.
Overall, it was a rather nice dinner. Hizashi regaled us with tales of almost everything under the sun with Aizawa just pointing out discrepancies, or fixing his story slightly. I ate my pasta quietly listening to their family banter. If only I could have this. No, it didn't do to be jealous. I'd had a life. I gave it up. that was on me. I put my fork down, and stared blindly at the table. I didn't want to ruin their moment. That wouldn't be just of me to do so. I would just have to grin and bear it. ignore the feelings inside. I could do it. I'd done it for years.
"Nico? Are you alright?" Hitoshi asked. I realized that all the talk at the table had ceased. I turned towards his voice.
"Yep!" I said brightly, adding in a half smile. Hopefully it didn't look too fake. I picked my fork back up, and took another bite of my pasta. I was full, but I felt obliged to eat at least the majority of my food.
The talk at the table resumed. I ate slowly acting really interested in the story as an excuse to not eat.
"Excuse me, where is the restroom?" I asked.
"Oh, this way." Hitoshi said, taking my elbow. He led me across the house and to a door. "Here it is. Take your time." He left me there. I opened the door, and locked it behind me. I sank to the floor, and just sat there for a moment. I needed to get my shit together. I wasn't going to lose what I just got. I was finally being accepted in some feasible way, and I was not going to let my past take that from me! I rocked back and forth on the floor.
I sighed and stood up. I needed to do something, but what?
Hitoshi Shinso's POV.
"Here it is. Take your time." I went back to the kitchen table, and sat down.
"What do you think of him?" Aizawa asked, looking at me.
"I don't know. he seems lonely." I replied, and looked at my hands. "He reminds me a lot of myself." I said. memories I did not need sprung to the surface. I shook my head.
"What do you mean by that?" Hizashi asked.
"He reminds me of myself back in the system. Lonely, and accused of being dark for having a less than light quirk." I told them, and looked up. "You know, I think I almost made him cry when I gave him a piece of toast. Toast! If that makes him so emotional, what kind of life has he been living?" I questioned. Aizawa looked at the table with something in his eyes.
"Not a good one. He told me a little about it at the training camp. Not much, but enough to make me pretty worried about him." my dad put his head in his hands.
"What did he tell you?" my other dad asked.
"I'm sorry. I can't tell you. I gave my word that what he said was confidential. I won't reveal anything unless he gives me the okay." He said, and stood. I picked up my dishes off the table, and my dads' too. I put them in the sink, and started the water.
"Hey, that's my job." Nico said jokingly from behind me. I jumped a literal foot into the air.
"Jeez! Don't sneak up on my like that!" I said, holding an admittingly soapy hand to my heart.
Nico smiled, it seemed off but I ignored that. He walked over, and took over the sink. He washed and dried all the dinner dishes.
"Well, it's been great, but I really need to get back to my dorm." Nico said when he finished drying the dishes.
"I'll take you home." I offered.
"Thanks!" he said, just a little too happily. Something was wrong. I could feel it.
"Well, Let's go."
End of chapter 2.
