Although she would never admit it, Umeko was in love with Hoji. She was absolutely positive that he would reject her, so she took her feelings and buried them so deep inside of her that they could never be found.
Sometimes, they sort of surfaced and she found herself fighting to keep some semblance of control and appear as though everything between them was normal.
And suddenly, out of the blue, something happened between them to change it all.
Umeko had been out for a walk one night and had found a place to sit and look at the stars. She was actually enjoying herself until she heard Hoji's voice.
"Umeko, what are you doing out here alone?" he asked. "It's dangerous"
"I can take care of myself." Umeko countered.
"Not very well, Umeko." Hoji said, coming over to her. "Remember, you're a bad shot."
"I'm not that bad." Umeko muttered, and took her hair out of it's usual ponytail, shaking it out a but. She did that every now and then, just for a break.
"It looks better that way." Hoji said.
"What does?"
"Your hair. It looks better down."
Umeko stared at Hoji as though he had lost his mind and began to talk like Ban. Then she blushed and turned pinkish, twirling a lock of hair around her finger. This was shaping up to remind her a lot of her romantic Hoji fantasies and she was determined not to let him know that.
After a moment of silence had passed, she sighed and stood up. "All right." she said. "Let's go."
As she was leaving, Hoji grabbed her elbow, pulled her to him, and before she had a chance to say anything in protest, kissed her.
Umeko was absolutely shocked, but inside a part of her was cheering. This was her romantic fantasy come true.
She pulled away from him, in shock.
"What was that…" she began.
"I've been dreaming of doing that to you for quite some time." Hoji admitted almost shyly.
Umeko gasped and spluttered, unable to form words. Then she smiled, stood on her tiptoes and kissed him again.
"What took you so long?" she murmured softly as he deepened the kiss, wrapping his arms around her.
It was her perfect romantic fantasy: her and Hoji, alone with only the stars around to watch them kiss.
