"Lizzie did you pick up the drinks and snacks for movie night," I shouted.
I heard shuffling coming from the direction of the kitchen and saw a blonde head poke out of the archway. This blonde head belonged to my best friend Elizabeth Raine Brooks, also known as Lizzie or Liz. We've known each other since we were in 5th grade, when I moved to Upstate New York from Michigan. She quickly became my best friend due to our love of the Marvel movies and comics. To this day I don't know how we've managed to stay friends for so long, considering we are complete opposites. She is the athletic one, whereas I am the one that most people consider the nerdy one. She's the tall blue eyed, blonde all American girl and well I'm not. I have brown hair that is ridiculously curly and green eyes, which I guess is my most prominent detail about me. I have freckles spattered across my face, thanks Irish heritage, and I'm short. Like five feet and a couple inches short. I have to climb onto my countertops to get into my cupboards in the kitchen!
Anyways I digress, I'm getting off topic here. Lizzie and I are both 21 years old, and we live in a tiny two bedroom apartment in the heart of New York City. We're both in our last year of school at NYU, where I'm studying Nursing and Lizzie is studying Business. I work the night shift downtown at the hospital as a receptionist along with going to school. Lizzie on the other hand works five days a week at the local radio station whenever she's not in classes. Because we work opposite schedules we don't get to see each other very often so about once a month we make sure that we have at least two days off at the same time. This is so we can catch up on what's happened and we can enjoy movie night. Which is exactly why I was shouting at Lizzie for snacks and drinks.
"I never forget to grab the wine or the popcorn and chocolate for movie night Hails," Lizzie said as she rolled her eyes in my direction. "Unlike some of us here I tend to be able to keep track of what we have and we don't have in our cupboards."
I rolled my eyes and laughed, "Oh haha Lizzie. I'll have you know I can keep track of what's in the cupboards. Just not when I've been working nonstop for three days in a row."
"I know I know," she joked. "You definitely have had the harder schedule than I have. Especially with all those COVID cases that have been popping up."
I sighed and flopped against the back of the couch. "I miss the days when we weren't in a pandemic, and I didn't have to cover extra shifts because the hospital is so understaffed."
Lizzie walked in with a bottle of wine and two wine glasses. She collapsed on the couch next to me and poured both of us a glass of wine. She reached for the TV remote and flipped on the TV navigating to the Disney+ account.
"I feel for you Hails, I really do. I can't even imagine how busy it's been. I read about it in the newspaper but seeing it is a completely different thing."
I nodded my head in agreement and covered myself with a blanket along with picking up my wine glass. I started to settle down into the couch and watched as Lizzie pulled up my favorite Marvel movie. Captain America: The First Avenger started to play and we both got comfy. We reached the part where Captain America rescues Bucky before I started to feel my eyes getting heavier. I looked over at Lizzie and saw that she was already asleep. I let out a yawn and let myself drift off into a deep sleep.
