The Frozen Wastes
A/N: This one-shot was inspired by three things: tournaments, fan art and datamined audio from Duel Links.
Ever since Kalin Kessler was brought back to life after the Dark Signer incident, his life has never been the same again. He was getting ready to celebrate Christmas with the citizens of Satisfaction Town and was exhausted after having spent the entire day writing down notes and having meetings.
Kalin settled into his bed and fell fast asleep. As he drifted off, his mind was transported to an icy temple in the middle of who-knows where. The temple looked like it was carved into the ice and looked very foreboding.
Where am I? Thought Kalin.
Kalin slowly stepped forward into the temple, staring at the bizarre scenery. Out of all the weird dreams he had ever since he was brought back to life after his second death, this ice temple was the oddest.
I wonder why I was brought here? And who is this place made for? Wondered Kalin.
The pale man continued to walk slowly, being careful as to not break the ice. Suddenly, a low growl filled the air. The sound sent chills up Kalin's spine and he froze in place. He looked around rapidly for the source of the noise.
"Who's there?!" demanded Kalin.
"Kalin Kessler..." the being growled.
"Who are you? How do you know my name?" asked Kalin.
"I am Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier," replied the being." One of the Three Spears of the Spirit World. And you have been chosen as it's bearer."
"Trishula? Why was I chosen to wield you? After everything I did in the past, I feel like I'm the last person to hold such a powerful creature."
"Indeed, Kalin. However, you have changed your destiny and we Duel Spirits have sensed it. Accept my power, and you will gain power like nothing you have seen before."
Kalin hesitated for a moment, thinking of the absurdity of it all to have been transported to another dimension and speaking to a monster. However, he realized there must have been a reason why Trishula chose him in the first place. Kalin finally looked up at the ice dragon with determination.
"Alright, Trishula, I accept your proposal."
"Very well, Kalin, approach the pedestal and repeat these words," said Trishula
"Let the spear shatter the frozen wastes! I call forth Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier!"
As they recited the chant, the room grew colder, and a blizzard swirled around them. Kalin screamed as he was whipped into the air and lifted off the ground.
"Ugh! What is happening, Trishula?! Did I fail your test? Are you listening to me?" cried Kalin.
However, the only sound he could hear was the blistering wind. His vision grew blurrier as he was sent flying into the air, until all he could see was white.
Kalin's eyes jolted open as he jumped out of bed. He looked around rapidly at his surroundings as he realized he was back in the human world. He breathed a heavy sigh of relief and wiped the sweat of his brow.
"That was the strangest dream ever," Kalin said to himself. "But it couldn't have been a dream. Why am I sweating and feeling cold at the same time?"
As he got out of bed to fetch himself a cup of water, something caught the corner of his eye. He turned around once more and noticed a white card sitting on the neighboring table. Kalin picked it up and was shocked, as the card had a picture of Trishula on it.
"It can't be..." he gasped. "So that dream wasn't my imagination after all?"
A small chill emanated from the card as Kalin held it. His surprised expression turned into a smile.
"Very well, Trishula, your master will use you well."
