The Akagi Household

"Shinji, Have you seen my green flash drive labeled 'GeoData 32'? I can't find it anywhere!" Naoko called out from upstairs.

Shinji groaned. "Did you check the 2nd laptop?"

A few clanks and clunks could be heard, before a "Aha" could be heard.

"I just cleaned a week ago, yet you somehow got the place messy!"

A tired looking Ritsuko came out of her room, already with a pack of cigarettes in her hand.

"Mornin'..." she said, shuffling to the patio in the back to have her morning smoke. Before she could reach the door, a quick hand snatched her pack away.

"Didn't I tell you to quit? The MAGI gave you the numbers of how long you'd probably live if you keep going." Shinji called out, as he went to dispose of the foul smelling carton.

Ritsuko grumbled. "Is there fresh coffee at least?" She then sniffed the air. "Hazelnut. Perfect." She stumbled over to the kitchen and poured herself a cup. She took a sip from the Disneyland mug they got last summer. As soon as the first sip went down, she perked up.

"You know, you should open up a coffee shop. You would definitely make a killing," she said, smiling at Shinji

"I could, but I doubt anyone would buy my coffee If I smell like LCL," he replied, Trying to clean up all the papers and notes that Naoko left. "So... Get a boyfriend yet sis?" Shinji said with a mischievous tone in his voice.

"No, But I know you don't have a girlfriend. You do know when you search 'hot girls,' it shows up in the browser history, right?" Ritsuko said, trying to keep serious. "Internet isn't cheap, not even for NERV scientists. For shame."

Shinji froze like a deer in headlights.

"What would Asuka say about that?" The sight of him in utter shock was making the stern façade a lot tougher.

"How did you know?" he stammered.

"Mom has known for quite a bit now. She was planning on giving you the talk, Just thought you should know. She's got programs that watch what you look up."

She walked over and held out her hand, waiting expectantly for an item. Shinji fished the cigarettes out of the trash can and handed them to her.

"Good, Now you should get ready, mom is taking you to the Parent-Teacher conference. I have to head into NERV for a bit."

The distinct clicks of high heels could be heard coming down the stairs. There stood Naoko in casual attire.

"Ready to go, Shinji? I'll be driving you to school today."

"Yeah, Just let me get my bag." Shinji then quickly stepped over to get his bag, and headed out the door.

Naoko followed suit and they both entered her new car.

"I can't believe you imported this from America, Didn't this cost a lot?"

Naoko pushed the button to start up her car. "Shinji, the planet is hot enough from Second Impact, I think it's worth a couple hundred thousand yen that may or may not be from your father's account. But that didn't come from me."

That earned a chuckle from Shinji. "Don't you think he'll notice?"

"Please, a man in his position has so much money, he could buy every house on this street if he wanted to. But he doesn't. He chooses abject misery and the bare minimum. He's no man you need to look up to."

"Who should I look up to?"

Naoko then began to pull out of the driveway. "Professor Fuyutski was pretty handsome in his youth?"

Shinji's eyes widened. "What!?"

She playfully nudged him on the arm. "I'm kidding!"

Tokyo III First Municipal School

"Well Dr. Akagi, It's a pleasure to meet you. We only have about a month left of the school year, so we thought It would be a good idea to let you in on how Shinji is doing, and some of his issues in class."

Naoko raised an eyebrow at that last statement, and looked at Shinji who promptly turned away.

"What sort of issues?"

The older man gave a sigh. "He is a very smart kid, in fact he helped fix some of the laptops here. But he has some anger issues. He is calm for most of the time, but in those moments that he is pushed, He snaps very violently. He hasn't hit anyone yet, but we feel like it might reach a point where he might."

The old teacher then turned to look at Shinji, who chose to stare at his hands.

"However, he is a very kind young man, and helps around the classroom, without even being asked. He was even asked by the Class Representative to be her Vice Representative. Perhaps once he graduates, he'll have a great future in computer engineering."

Shinji smiled at the praise, looking up to silently address it.

"I would hope so, I taught him everything I know." said Naoko, chuckling at the words. "And as for the anger issues, I'll talk to him about that." She turned a warm smile at Shinji, who blushed a bit.

The teacher handed her a small bundle of papers. "Well, here are his grades for the year, he is doing very well."

"Well before we get into that, I would like to ask you something. Shinji, could you step out for a moment while we talk?"

Shinji nodded and headed back to the classroom.

"Hey Shin-Man, where's your Sis?" Toji wrapped his arm around Shinji's neck.

"Uh, work?"

Kensuke followed suit, nearly constricting his windpipe with combined force. "And where is her friend?" Both boys grinned.

"She's at work too."

"Aw, c'mon man!" said Toji. "When will they be around for us to see 'em?"

Shinji felt the regret of the first time he had his friends over while Ritsuko was having girls' night with Misato.

"You guys are weird. They're adults."

"You're telling me you wouldn't?" said Kensuke.

"No."

"You don't get it, do you?" Kensuke said, sighing before disengaging his grip.

"Ritsuko is my sister. If she seriously thought of going out with you, it'd be like dating her brother. Besides, you guys were so embarrassing last time!" Shinji said. The after-image of their last hang out flashed in his mind.

They then saw the teacher walk in.

"Alright everyone, Today we will not be talking about Algebra. Instead we have a special guest coming in to talk to you."

"Oh god..."

"Hello everyone my name is Dr. Naoko Akagi."

"Akagi?" someone muttered. "Is she related to Shinji?"

"As a matter of fact, I am!"

The class devolved into whispers and chatter, while Shinji sank into his seat. He felt everyone's eyes on him.

"Come on everyone, pay attention to Dr Akagi or you'll all stay after class!" Hikari threatened as she stood up. The class immediately quieted.

"Thank you Ms Horaki. I would like to announce that you are all invited to an end-of-the-school-year party at the Akagi Residence."

The class erupted into a mass of cheers and whoops. "Settle down everyone!" Hikari ordered, but was promptly ignored.

"Tomorrow afternoon, make sure to arrive before 5 PM!" Naoko said. She smiled at Shinji, who remained flustered.

Present day

NERV HQ Bridge

"The MAGI has a confirmed Pattern Blue. We can determine that the Third Angel has arrived. Now sending to the main monitor."

"JSSDF and UN forces are engaging in direct combat. The Angel shows no signs of retaliation."

The Bridge was in a chaotic state, despite training for this, it did not help that they were terrified.

"Those Pre Impact Movies were right, The military is always useless in giant monster scenarios..." Shinji muttered, messing around with his Datapad.

"I mean, Godzilla basically predicted this in 1954. And ever since then, Every monster movie makes the military useless... And I guess they got it right..."

"Well, it keeps their pride high, Even though it will only end bad for them." Naoko said as she went through multiple checklists.

"Captain Katsuragi, What's the status of our outer city turret emplacements?"

"Turret emplacements are at 54% use, Target is approaching Absolute Defense Line. If the UN and JSSDF have any more they want to do before it enters the destruction range of Tokyo-3, do so now!"

The old generals sitting at a temporary desk grumbled, before receiving a call from a secure line.

"Deploying N Mine."

Aerial footage of the battle was cut short, shortly after the confirmed hit.

"There was no way it could survive a direct hit. Not even the best bunker could."

Shinji scoffed at the remark, still waiting patiently to be deployed.

The shockwave hit. It was relatively small, but did just enough to disrupt the communications and make some minor tremors.

"Reestablishing telemetry connection."

The generals' fears were realized when they saw the aftermath of the N blast; It failed to destroy the angel.

"Goddamn it!" The top general said. He sighed and turned to face Gendo Ikari, who looked down at him, a small sense of pride radiating.

"Commander Ikari, Are you sure you can handle this?"

Despite the hostility in the air, directed at him, Gendo wore a smug expression. "Of course, that is NERV's purpose after all," he said, pushing up his glasses.

He turned to his pilots. "Rei, Shinji, Are you ready to depart?"

"Yes."

"Yeah."

"Miss Akagi, Are the Evangelions and weapon caches ready?"

"Yes sir," said Ritsuko. "Units 00 and 01 are ready for deployment. Pilots are ready for boarding."

Gendo's eyes flicked to Naoko. "Dr. Akagi, Are the MAGI approving?"

Naoko kept her eyes on the monitor. "All MAGI have given all green lights, Commander." The last word came out in a mild sneer, which Gendo ignored.

"Proceed to board Evangelion and prepare for launch."

Misato called technicians and crew in the Evangelion cages. "All crew prepare for Units 00 and 01 for launch, Pilots are en route!"

"Let's go, Rei!" Shinji motioned for her to follow, and she did so without hesitation.

"Good luck you two!" Naoko called out, beaming at them until they left. The smile dropped once they were gone. Biological or not, the mother in her always ached for the day Shinji had to fight a real angel.

Shinji and Rei came to a fork in the corridor. "Hey Rei," he said. "I'll meet you on the surface."

"Likewise." She gave a quick smile, and with a wave, she headed towards her Evangelion cage.

Shinji's hands tightened. He took a sharp inhale, closing his eyes for a moment before breaking off towards Unit-01.

"Entry Plug ejected. Crash couch readied."

Shinji saw the Pilot's Seat readied in front of him and breathed in. He climbed on and gave the ok signal to the cage crew that he was good to go. He was lifted into the air and moved towards the ejected plug.

The seat was lowered and locked into place. His hands felt restless, so he kept them on the control yokes.

"Main Plug Power Cells online, Now enabling Plug User Settings Interface."

Shinji saw the plug light up with standby lights and felt his seat warmer turn on. His breathing slowly got a bit faster.

"Plug flooding started. Injecting LCL Senses Enhancer."

The Entry plug then began to flood with LCL. At an offhand suggestion, it was mixed with a mild flavoring agent. It tasted like strawberry, his favorite. It kept his mind off of the almost-overpowering coppery taste he had been previously used to.

The plug was completely filled and he allowed his lungs to fill up. He kept focusing on the strawberry, reminding him of more relaxed moments.

"LCL Ionization beginning."

The LCL soon cleared up with a slight pinkish tint, and he then felt the tingling of the A10 connectors coming online.

"A10 connection established, Beginning Synchronization."

He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself. He felt something there. He wanted to ignore it, but he had to accept its presence. At least, enough that it would move.

"Shinji, are you ok?" Naoko appeared on the now synchronized FOV monitor, with a concerned look on her face.

"Yeah, I'm just…" Shinji sighed and looked down at his hands.

A smile spread across her face. "Hey, Once we finish this, we'll go out and celebrate. Also I'll make sure to record the battle for Asuka!" she said with a giggle.

"Mom!" Shinji said, his face turning red.

"Don't worry! It'll be fine. Go do your best!" She then cut the call and Shinji soon realized he was already undocked from the gantries and arm restraints.

"Units 00 and 01 to launchpads 31A and 32B." Misato could be heard in the background giving out orders.

"Shinji, Rei, are you two ready?"

They both gave a confirmation of some sort.

The two felt the Eva restraints lock onto the launchpad rails, which signaled the attachment with a loud click.

"Evangelions Units Launch!"

Shinji felt the weight of multiple Gs pushing down on him. Adrenaline rushed through his mind and body. This was it, he was going to face the enemy of mankind.

The First Decisive Battle.
