Jessica was ecstatic. The new English teacher was starting today, and she couldn't wait to meet him. Bella knew this because Jessica hadn't stopped talking about it all morning. And all last week. It was a little odd having him start in the middle of the year, but Mrs. Mallory was finally going to rehab for her alcoholism. She'd tried to make it big in the entertainment biz and when it didn't pan out, she'd moved back home with her parents and went into a deep depression. How she got the teaching job, Bella will never know but everyone was really proud of her for finally recognizing the problem and making the decision to check herself into rehab. She never drank at school, at least that anyone had noticed, but she often came to school with a heavy hangover from the night before.
"Do you think this lipstick is okay? I don't want to overdo it. Or maybe this one, it's a little more on the pink side. Maybe that'll look like I'm not trying as hard?" Jessica said, looking at herself in the mirror beside her desk and applying one lipstick to her top lip and the other to her bottom lip. Bella looked at her friend and rolled her eyes.
"Jess." Bella grabbed her friend's shoulders and trying to make eye contact. "It's his first day. Let's not bombard him right away, shall we? Why don't we give him a bit of time to settle in before we dive straight into the deep end?" she chuckled.
Jessica had the decency to look a little embarrassed.
"Okay... you're right. I'm being a little ridiculous," she stated, glancing quickly toward the mirror and smoothing down her hair. Bella fluffed Jessica's dirty blonde, wavy hair back up a little bit for her and glanced at the clock. Class would be starting soon.
"I think you're just excited!" Bella smirked, paused and then it dawned on her what this was likely about. "Hey, look at me. Eric is an idiot and you deserve so much more than him. You know that, right?"
"I know... But it just sucks that I have to see him every day now and I mean we weren't dating for that long or anything but I thought we were both having fun... It was just a bit of a shock and I mean I don't know... it kind of cut my self esteem down, you know?"
"If he's the type of guy who breaks up with girls during the ten minute passing periods, he's not a guy you want to stick around. I think you dodged a bullet on that one. And more importantly, what would Lizzo say?" she smiled. "But God. What a total as…jerk."
Kids were starting to file into Jessica's classroom and Bella wasn't one to cuss in front of students, even if she heard kids throwing the F bomb around left and right every day. Ah, the joys of high school.
Jessica laughed at the change in Bella's tone and waved her off. "I'll see you at lunch. We can talk about the new guy. Text me if you see him on the way to your class!" she squealed quietly.
"Will do!" Bella smirked and rolled her eyes as she walked out of Jessica's room. She only had to walk across the way and then down a few classrooms. Bella did not in fact see the "new guy" on her way to class, but she did have to walk by his room to get to hers. When she got to her room, there were about five students already waiting outside her class.
"Hey guys, sorry to make you wait out here," she said as she unlocked the door to her room. She walked over to the thermostat and made sure the heat was on.
"Miss Swan! I forgot my book in my locker, can I go run and get it really quick?"
"Yeah, but be quick, okay? We're going to start in 5 minutes."
When lunch finally came, Bella made her way back over to Jessica's room. Jess' room had the best view overlooking the campus and partially into the town, so they often ate lunch in her classroom because of it. Jessica also locked her room during lunch, so they rarely had student interruptions. She spotted the "new guy" standing outside his classroom and she decided to get a little out of her comfort zone and introduce herself.
"Hi," Bella waved. "I'm Bella! I teach English a couple classrooms down," she jutted her thumb out somewhat awkwardly in the direction of her classroom.
"Hi, Bella," he said, reaching out to shake her hand. "I'm Edward. I think you're the first teacher I've officially met so far," he smiled, his green eyes striking her.
"Oh, really? Huh... Well, on behalf of the teaching staff, welcome!" she smiled. "I'm heading over to Jessica's to have lunch in her room. Would you like to join us? Maybe meet at least one more teacher today?"
"Yeah, let me just grab my stuff really quick. I'll be right back." Bella sent a quick text to Jess to make sure she wasn't caught off guard. Once he reappeared, they walked the short distance to Jessica's classroom.
"So, how's your first day going so far?" Bella asked once they were done with introductions and sitting down to eat. Her phone buzzed on the table and she ignored it. She knew who it was, and she knew it wasn't anything pressing.
"Not bad! I think the kids are in the "shiny new toy" phase right now, so I haven't had any issues just yet. I don't think that'll last very long though. I have a feeling some of them are going to start testing me pretty soon," he chuckled, giving them a "yikes" face. Bella had the feeling that the "shiny new toy" phase was going to quickly translate into students having an exceptionally large crush on him. With his tall, lean, and muscular frame, the piercing green eyes, the perfectly-tousled-yet-not-purposely-styled mess of dark bronze hair, the slight five-o'clock shadow. He looked more like a male model than an English teacher. He was definitely going to have a hard time keeping students from daydreaming about him.
"Have you had a chance to really tour the campus yet?" Jessica asked.
"I haven't really been able to see everything just yet. I basically know our block and where the admin building is," he laughed.
"I'd be happy to give you the grand tour one of these days if you'd like? Bella has lunch with her boyfriend on Thursdays, so I'm always bored if you want to do it then?" Jess said smoothly.
"Yeah, that sounds good. I always like to feel as confident as possible when dealing with high schoolers."
"Great!" Jess beamed. Bella's phone buzzed several times in a row and she finally gave in a looked at it. She had 12 texts in the last 10 minutes, all from Mike. She finally opened them while Jessica and Edward made plans to walk around campus.
"Hey baby, how's your day going?" She hated when he called her baby. And he knew that. She never really understood that pet name anyway. She wasn't an infant...
"I love you!"
"Can't wait to see you tonight. ;)"
"What're you doing?"
"It's your lunch isn't it?"
"Where are you?"
"Are you with Jessica?"
"Man, she talks so much. Haha"
"Baby?"
"I love you so much!"
"How come you're not responding?"
"Oh, by the way, something came up and I won't be able to pick you up right away today. I'll be there closer to 6." Bella sighed. He did this often enough that she usually used that extra time to plan her classes for the next day. He insisted on driving her to work and then would often tell her something "came up" and he'd have to pick her up later.
"Hey, sorry. Jess and I are meeting the new teacher. That's okay, it'll give me a chance to plan tomorrow's lesson. Thanks for the heads up!" She responded.
"Everything okay, Bells?" Jess asked, bringing Bella back into the conversation. Bella's phone buzzed again.
"I love you!" She had to fight the eye roll. Mike said "I love you" so frequently that it started to lose its meaning but if she didn't say it back then he got really offended by it so she quickly responded to his text.
"Yeah! Everything's fine. Mike's gonna be late to pick me up but that'll actually give me a chance to plan for tomorrow's lesson, so it works out!"
"Do you want a ride home? I really don't mind," Jess offered.
"Oh, that's alright! I'll be able to focus better in my classroom than I can at home anyway. Thank you though!" Bella flashed a big smile.
Bella was sitting in her classroom going over her notes for the following day when there was a knock at her door. She was technically done planning the lesson for tomorrow, but she had the time and decided a third look over everything couldn't hurt. She checked her phone to check the time and noticed there weren't any texts from Mike. It was only 4:45 pm so she probably wouldn't hear from him for at least another hour or so. God knows what he was getting into this time.
"Come in," she hollered, focused on her computer.
"Hey, Bella. I was just walking out, and I noticed you were still here. Can I give you a hand with anything?" Edward asked, peering in through the crack he'd opened in the door.
"Oh! Hey! I'm just double… or triple checking my lesson plan for tomorrow. Mike said he'd be here around 6 so I'm just keeping busy until then. How'd your first day end up?"
"Not too bad! Kids aren't overly hyper just yet so I think I'll stand a chance for another few days at least," he crossed his fingers with a hopeful look.
"Lucky you! I had a girl after lunch who must've had about 30 pixie stix before coming to class or something. She was entirely off the wall today! I couldn't get her to sit still!" Bella laughed. "Thank God she has basketball to burn off all that energy!"
"Gotta love sports! You have any favorites?"
"Oh yeah! I swam in high school, so I always love watching swimming when it's on during the Olympics and I try to support some of the students and go to some of their games and meets. I attempted quite a few sports in elementary school but wasn't really great at any of them," she laughed. "I tried soccer once in second grade and my foot-eye coordination is just really, really bad. At one point I picked up the ball with my hands, placed it in front of the goal, and then kicked it as hard as I could. It was a good kick and made it in the goal, but I definitely didn't quite catch on to the concept and quit soon after. What about you? Any sports?"
"Oh man, I would've loved to see that!" he chuckled. "Yeah, I actually swam in high school too! Swim and water polo, that was my jam! I played soccer for about 6 years before switching to polo though. But I honestly like most sports, it's fun to watch the strategy involved."
"Oh wow! Water polo is a pretty tough sport, isn't it? You have to keep your head above water and people are trying to drown you and you're not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool, right?" Bella was trying really hard not to picture him in a speedo. And failing just a bit.
"Yeah, only goalies if it's a shallow-deep pool – which really should be banned at this point. I hate those pools. It's a really rewarding sport though! Kind of a combination between basketball, soccer, football, and wrestling all in one."
"I'll have to go to some of our games here! Apparently, we have a fairly decent program."
"Oh really? I'll have to check them out! Thanks for the heads up," he smiled. They continued talking about sports and awkward sports situations they'd been in or seen when the door was suddenly thrown open.
"There you are, Baby!" Mike said loudly, his blue eyes finding hers. He marched right over to her and planted a huge, wet kiss on her lips. Edward started to get up from the desk he'd been sitting in and looked away, feeling awkward. Bella tried to move her head back and away from him but Mike's hand kept her head firmly in place. When he finally released her, Bella turned away quickly and wiped her mouth and started putting her things away and packing up. Internally she cursed him, he knew she hated PDA.
"I sent you a ton of texts and you didn't reply. I thought something was wrong. Did you not get them? You almost gave me a panic attack!" Bella fought really hard to not roll her eyes.
"Oh… Sorry." Bella searched around for her phone, moving papers around her desk. "I must have misplaced my phone. I didn't feel the buzz. Sorry about that. Umm Mike, this is Edward, the new English teacher. Edward, this is my boyfriend, Mike." Edward reached his hand out to Mike and Mike shook it, letting go quickly. Bella picked her phone up off the ground and saw she had 7 texts all asking where she was. Somehow it was already 6:11 pm. She and Edward had been talking for over an hour! "Oh my gosh! I'm sorry if I kept you, Edward! I didn't notice the time fly by!"
"Not at all. I've got nowhere to be right now and it was nice getting to know one of my coworkers a little better," he smiled. "Thank you for inviting me to join you and Jessica for lunch today, by the way. I still haven't gotten the chance to talk to many teachers yet."
"That was fun! Jess and I usually eat in her room for lunch if you ever feel like you want to join us again. Hopefully we weren't too boring for you!" Bella noticed Mike's eyes darting between herself and Edward.
"No, you two are fun! I think I might take you up on that offer, thank you." As Edward spoke, Mike moved to place his hand at the small of Bella's back, snaking it around her side and semi-hugging her to him. Bella cringed internally… and maybe a little externally as well. She moved out of his grip to go grab one of her bags.
"Well we better be getting home, Baby," Mike exclaimed. "I haven't had dinner yet, and I'm starved!"
"Yeah, okay… Well thanks for keeping me company while I was waiting, Edward. I had a good time."
"Me too!" he assured with a crooked grin.
They said their goodbyes to Edward, Bella locked up her classroom, and they headed down to Mike's car. As they pulled out of the parking lot, Mike set his hand on Bella's thigh and started rubbing as she was sitting in the passenger seat. She stiffened immediately and her heartrate started to pick up. She feebly tried to hold his hand instead but he kept his hand firmly on her thigh.
"Babe, can you please move your hand? You know I don't like that," she stammered, barely above a whisper.
"What? Why not? What, because he did that? I don't see why you get so emotional and moody about this. It's not even a big deal and it's not fair to me." Bella could tell she'd offended him. She didn't know how he could feel offended since she'd told him so many times before but somehow it always seemed to set him off a bit. He yanked his hand away and pushed down on the gas pedal. This wasn't out of the ordinary and as much as Bella hated this reaction and this speed, she was used to it. She almost hoped he'd get pulled over but knew that would put him in even more of a sour mood.
When they got to Bella's apartment, he got out of the car and slammed his door shut, stomping his way up to her door. Bella gathered all her things and quickly followed.
"What do you want for dinner?" she asked.
"I don't care, whatever. I'm starving."
"Alright, spaghetti okay?"
"Yeah, whatever." He was already turning on her tv to play video games. At least that might calm him down a little, she thought.
When she finished making dinner, she set it out on the table and called to him. He didn't respond so she walked into the living room to let him know it was on the table. He was fully engaged in his COD game and didn't look like he could hear her.
"Mike? Babe, dinner's ready."
"Oh, sorry! I'll be right in."
Bella walked back to the table and set herself a plate and started eating. It was already 8 pm and she was famished. She was halfway done when Mike walked in and grabbed himself a plate.
"Looks good, Babe, thanks!"
"So how was your day?" Bella asked trying to make conversation and also question a bit as to why he had to pick her up so late.
"Oh, met up with the guys. Tom brought over some pretty wicked acid and I didn't want to drive while I was tripping balls," he chuckled. Bella stared straight ahead for a moment, gathering some composure.
"If you commit to driving me to work, could you plan those "trips" on another day when I'm not relying on you to get home?" she fumed, trying to keep her voice calm and even. "Next time can you just tell me so I can take Jess up on her offer to take me home, or call Jake to come get me. I don't like being on campus when it's getting dark."
"Why would you need Jake to take you home? I don't like how he looks at you, he totally has a crush on you."
"We're friends… He used to be your friend. And he doesn't have a crush on me. Boys and girls can be friends without there being something else going on."
"Yeah, he used to be my friend until he kept talking to my girlfriend after I told him not to."
Bella paused to take a breath before saying, "I don't like that you told him not to talk to me. We're friends, nothing more. I don't know why you're so adamant that I'm going to cheat on you."
"It's not you I don't trust, Babe! It's him! He's totally got the hots for you and I don't feel like sharing," he smirked. Bella shook her head.
"Me having guy friends isn't sharing. It's the same thing as having a female friend except there's a penis instead of a vagina."
"I don't know why you want to talk to him so bad. I'm asking you not to talk to him because it hurts me and you keep wanting to talk to him. Do you not care about my feelings on this?"
"It's not that I don't care but I don't think its fair. He hasn't done anything wrong."
"Well would you like it if I talked to Jessica all the time?"
"Honestly, I wouldn't mind. If you two got along, that'd actually be really great." Mike stopped for a second, clearly thrown.
"Well I don't like it," Mike huffed and walked into the living room to continue playing video games. Bella sighed and started cleaning up the mess from dinner. At least she'd have leftovers for the next few nights.
Once Bella had finished cleaning up, it was close to 9 pm and she was ready to go to bed.
"Hey Babe, I'm getting pretty tired and I think I want to go to bed pretty soon. That okay?" she asked trying to give him a hint.
"Oh already?" he replied, turning away from the tv. "Well thanks for making dinner, that was really good!"
"No problem, glad you liked it," she smiled blankly. Mike turned off the tv and walked over to her, pulling her into his arms and kissing her neck. Bella moved away a little bit and tried to gently push him off. "Babe, I'm really tired right now. Maybe tomorrow?"
"What? How come you never seem like you like when I hug you anymore? Are you okay with me?"
"Yeah, of course. I'm just tired."
"Come on, Baby, we haven't fucked in a long time." Bella focused on a spot on the wall until Mike pulled her away from him and looked at her. "Come on," he said suggestively, moving in to kiss her ear. "Please?"
"I don't know, I just haven't really been feeling it lately, you know?"
"It's been forever though. We haven't done it in ages!"
"It's only been about a week.."
"Baby, come on." He was kissing her neck and moving his left hand up and down her right side.
Bella took a deep breath and sighed. Resignation. Maybe he'd stop pestering her for a while. "Uh... F...fine. Okay." She hoped it would be quick this time. Mike excitedly dragged her into her room and started taking off his clothes and then hers. Bella moved to cover her breasts as he took her shirt off and gently pushed her down onto her bed.
"I want to see all of you," he mumbled, moving her hands away from herself. He didn't make any move for any foreplay, he just grabbed the condom and pushed into her. She hissed quietly at the sharp pain as he initially pumped in and out of her. "Baby, how come you're not making any noise? Is this not good?"
"Sorry," she whispered and started moaning quietly as he pushed in and out, carefully trying to move her arms back over her breasts. He had switched his anxiety meds a few months ago and it seemed to cause him to last a lot longer than he normally would have, so it took him about an hour and a half to finally finish. He rolled off of Bella and walked over to the bathroom to clean up. Bella sat in bed feeling worthless and started to look around for where her clothes went, slowly pulling them back on. She would definitely be sore tomorrow.
"Hey Baby, I think I'm going to head out. I'll see you tomorrow!" he said, walking over to kiss her. "I love you!"
"Love you too," she smiled blankly. As Mike left, Bella locked the door behind him and she made her way to the bathroom to clean herself up and then sat in bed until she finally fell asleep, a few hours later.
