Are two updates so close to each other? Who is she haha! This is me making up for not posting for almost two months and also trying to get through Booth's birthday since I'm on a roll with covering his special day. As always, I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading!
It was now much later in the night, a couple of minutes past midnight, and Booth and Brennan laid contentedly in each others' arms. They'd cooled down already, enjoying yet another glass of champagne and a few more teasing touches.
"You know, it's officially your birthday now," Brennan told him as she glanced at the rustic wall clock they'd hung beside their dresser.
"Hmm, I thought it was officially my birthday when you seduced me," he hummed, kissing the top of her head.
Her deep laugh was music to his ears. Her fingers were drawing idle patterns on his torso. To say she felt comfortable in his arms would be an understatement. Being in her husband's arms was the most loved, comforted, and safest place she knew. Absentmindedly, she thought of the times before Booth where she wouldn't dare cuddle after sex, not feeling the need or the most comfortable to be vulnerable like that in the aftermath. But with Booth, like everything, it was different. He made her feel safe and comfortable, able to continue being vulnerable after the matter without fear he would call her too needy or clingy.
"There is one more gift I wanted you to open tonight."
Booth knew there was still the wrapped gift on Brennan's bedside table. "Hmm, what if I leave it until tomorrow that way I don't open all my gifts tonight."
Brennan smiled and propped herself up. "It won't be your last gift. You still have the gifts from the children to open tomorrow that they're excited to give you. And, you might have another gift from me."
"Bones! You shouldn't have… I -"
"Yes, I know, you have everything you could ever want. But it is your fiftieth birthday and I wanted to spoil you." She leaned up and gave him a quick kiss before reaching over and grabbing the wrapped gift. Booth sat up too, plopping their pillows so they could lean back comfortably.
Suddenly worried that he would find the gift too much or too cheesy, Brennan tried to add a quick disclaimer, "It's kind of a lot, what's in there."
Booth raised his eyebrows, "You mean like multiple small gifts in this one big box?"
"No, I mean. The one gift, it's a lot. There's a lot to it."
Sensing his wife's hesitancy, he set out to quelch it. "Baby, you know that I'll love whatever it is." He took the box from her and began to open it. His eyes furrowed in confusion when he saw the wooden book back but when he turned it over and saw the engraving on the front, he let out a surprised chuckle.
Brennan sat beside him, gauging his reaction.
The album cover was chocolate wood with brown leather binding. On the front cover there was an engraving of mountains at the bottom of the cover and on top, written in cursive with a serif font subtitle was "Booth and Brennan… 16 years of adventures."
"Oh, Bones… is this?" He looked up at her, tears welling in his eyes.
She nodded, "Yes, it's a personalized photo album. Ange helped me put it together since she's been opening her photography studio, I thought it'd be a good opportunity for her. I also didn't trust anyone else with our memories."
"I… you really… Oh Bones," Booth was lost for words. He knew that he and Brennan had a rich history but, having it all laid out in front of him, all in one book, put together at the request of his wife...
"How far does it go back?"
"Why don't you open it and see?" she smiled, encouraging him to open it. He opened it and on the first page, he was met with a handwritten note from Brennan. He smiled and chuckled as he read it, rogue tears slipping down at the emotions that were building in him. It was reminiscent of her toast earlier along with a couple more callouts of their children, the near-death experiences they've had, a couple of their inside jokes, and of course her blackmailing him to take her out into the field. He chuckled at that and began flipping through.
There were pictures from their first case together, and he had to do a double-take at how young they were back then. The photographs and memories continued chronologically and as he got to the point where they began their romantic relationship, he found a lot of pictures that he or Brennan had taken on their phones. There were photographs of Brennan and Parker together at the park, the first ultrasound picture they'd gotten of Christine. There was even a picture of the two of them leaning against each other, asleep on the couch in her office.
"Ange took that one apparently," she told him. Booth simply chuckled remembering the case they were on and how tired they'd been that day waiting for results from Hodgins that they simply passed out for a few minutes.
The memories progressed to photographs of when Christine was born, his favorite picture of Brennan and Christine he had taken one night as she nursed her in the nursery in the mighty hut. More pictures of the two of them, some on the job, and pictures they'd taken together. When he got to their wedding, it was one of the bigger sections including many photographs from the photographer, photographs he figured Ange and their family had managed to take of them. His favorite, besides the many with him and his wife, was one they'd taken with Christine just after the ceremony.
He remembered how fussy she'd been that morning at being around so many people. So Brennan had decided to leave her out of the ceremony so she could quiet down and not get too panicked. When she and Booth had walked back down the aisle, Christine had run up behind them and Brennan had lifted her up in her arms. The photographer had captured the moment of the two of them smiling at each other and Booth standing behind them, arms around both of them. There were pictures of him and Christine dancing on the dance floor, his daughter in his arms as he held her tightly and swayed to the soft melody that was playing.
As he kept flipping, he came across pictures of their honeymoon, one that was so unconventional yet so them. His favorite from there was one a bartender had helped them take. They were chilling in the pool and had just reordered some drinks, just simply enjoying time together and he wanted a picture to immortalize the moment. So, when the bartender came back, at Booth's request, he took a picture of the two of them, Booth behind Brennan with his arms wrapped around her as she held up both their skull-shaped glasses.
Booth was lost beyond words. Seeing so many beautiful moments he'd shared with his wife and family over the years really made him that much more grateful to be turning 50. He came upon the section when Brennan was pregnant with Hank and his first ultrasound, followed by pictures with Christine talking to Hank while he was still in Brennan's belly.
The photographs they'd taken during and immediately after Hank's home birth. He kept flipping and came across pictures of the two of them together enjoying life with their children, Hank's first steps, them together at different gala's they attended, them together when the lab was rebuilt, and then their family away on a vacation.
"I remember this," He pointed out the pictures of Hank, Christine, and Brennan playing on the beach. "We really needed that, didn't we?"
"Yes, we did. And the children loved being by the beach and playing by the sea every day."
The photographs continued until it got up to the present day and Booth gasped when he saw that the final couple of pictures were with Lily and them.
"Don't worry. Ange doesn't know it yet. I had her send me it with a few black slots so I could have the pictures developed and put them in."
He smiled and felt so full when he read the engraving on the inside of the back cover, "Our adventure continues and though our family isn't all under one roof, our love holds us together. We love you, Booth, with all our hearts."
Booth flipped back through the photo album once more before setting it down and pulling Brennan into his arms. He held her as close to him as he could. Brennan's arms came around him and returned the hug.
"I take it that you like your gift?" she asked, already knowing his response.
"Yeah, Bones. I love it so much."
"Good. I was hoping you did."
"How long did it take you?" He asked as he loosened his grip on her.
"A little longer than I thought. I did most of the photograph selections while you were occupied or sleeping and Ange helped me with the rest."
"I still can't believe you managed to surprise me, Bones. Normally, I know exactly what you've been up to and when."
"Well, my skills certainly are improving. Given my steep learning curve, I expected no less."
Booth chuckled and the two fell into their familiar quiet bickering. After a couple of kisses from Booth, in an effort to distract his wife, she gave up on their little banter. She laid back and stretched her body.
"Hmm, what time is it?" she muttered sleepily, feeling the effects of their night catching up to her.
"It's almost 1 am," Booth told her, also yawning.
"We should check on the kids to make sure they're okay," she told him, already rolling over to her side getting comfier in bed.
Booth laughed. "Alright, sleepyhead. I'll go check on them real quick." He pulled on his sweatpants briefly and wandered down the hall. All three of them were still sound asleep and little Lily had rolled over and was snuggling her stuffed elephant and the blanket she was swaddled in. Booth checked her baby monitor to make sure everything was still working and when he was satisfied it was, he made his way back to his and Brennan's room.
He smiled seeing her all wrapped up in the duvet. He yawned again feeling deliciously tired after their night. His heart felt so full at how lucky he was to have Brennan as his wife. She'd gone all out for him and knowing she had more planned for him later in the day, had him feeling as if he were on cloud nine.
He turned off the lights after re-corking the wine bottle, leaving it in the chiller, and slid into bed next to her.
"Hmmm, kids okay?"
"Yeah, they're just fine, baby."
"Good… night Booth. Love you." She muttered, sleep already pulling her under.
"Night, baby. I love you too." Booth kissed her forehead and settled down next to her, the sandman claiming both of them.
A small set of distant whimpers woke Brennan up a couple of hours later. She blinked a couple of times before opening her eyes and propping up on the bed. She quietly reached over Booth who was still sleeping and picked up the baby monitor. Lily's quiet whimpers came through the feed again and Brennan quickly got out of bed to go tend to her. Instead of putting back on her clothes, she reached for Booth's black t-shirt that was on the floor and put that on along with her robe.
Opening the door to the nursery, she found Lily awake and trying to roll out of her swaddle.
"Oh sweetie, come here." She reached in and picked up the baby, who quieted down as she was tucked away in Brennan's arms. Brennan quickly changed her diaper and then went into the kitchen and fixed her a nice, hot bottle. It was early mornings and quiet moments with Lily that Brennan really loved.
"You know, today is Daddy's birthday Lily," she told Lily quietly as she finished getting Lily's milk and headed back to the nursery. Lily cooed in response, her attention focused on the bottle of milk in Brennan's hand.
Brennan chuckled when she saw Lily's hand go for the bottle and her little head stretching over to reach it.
"Okay, okay, here we go." She sat down in the rocking chair and as soon as Lily's mouth met the bottle, she began almost chugging it. "Woah, slow down," Brennan laughed.
Lily just patted the bottle in response and kept drinking. It was about five in the morning which meant that Lily had kept her schedule even though last night was her first night in her bedroom. Something Brennan was very proud of. As Lily was finishing her bottle, she was also falling asleep again so Brennan kept rocking and began singing a soft lullaby to help Lily fall asleep again.
Brennan swaddled her back in her blanket, burped her, and put her back down to sleep again. Lily would only sleep for about another four hours before she woke up again which would be about the same time Hank and Christine woke up.
"Sweet dreams angel," she placed a gentle kiss on Lily's forehead and watched with a smile as Lily cooed and snuggled in deeper.
It was still early and the sun hadn't risen yet but Brennan was oddly awake. Normally, she'd be able to go back to sleep for a few more hours before really waking up but right now, she felt ready to start moving. Whether it was because it was morning and Booth's birthday or she was just feeling rejuvenated after their night together, she didn't know. She went back into their bedroom and quietly began picking up the wine glasses and the chiller and tidying a bit. She hung the negligee and robe over the couch chair in their room and picked up the few throw pillows that ended up on the ground as a result of their activities.
She quietly closed their room door behind her, making sure Booth was still asleep, and went into the kitchen to start on coffee and prepping the oven and ingredients to bake his cake later. While she was flitting about the kitchen, she also peeked outside to check on Shepsky. As it was getting colder, they'd bought him a little puppy winter coat but Brennan was toying with the idea of just bringing him inside, in general, to ensure that he didn't freeze with the harsh winter they'd have.
"Bones, are you okay? What are you doing, it's 6:30 in the morning?"
She spun around from her spot by the back door and saw her husband shuffling towards her, bed head and all, throwing on his robe.
"Booth," she chastised. She was hoping he'd stay in bed so she could surprise him with breakfast in bed. When she saw him wince, as he walked towards her, she rushed to his side, knowing exactly what had him wincing.
"Do you need me to draw you a warm foot bath? I can also rub it out for you." She grabbed onto her husband's bicep and led him to the couch.
"I'm fine, Bones. It's just early in the morning and I didn't stretch them out before getting out of bed."
"Why did you get out of bed?" she asked him as they sat on the couch together.
"I reached over and you weren't there so, I came to find you," he gave her a small charm smile and Brennan chuckled.
"Well, there's no way you're going back to sleep are you?"
"No… why?"
"Because the children were very excited to surprise you with breakfast in bed for your birthday."
Booth smiled, he knew how eager they'd be to help in the kitchen. He had decided to surprise Brennan with breakfast in bed on Mother's Day a couple of months ago and he brought in Christine and Hank to help him make breakfast and get everything set up to surprise Brennan who had been really surprised.
"How about I pretend to sleep?"
"Do you know how intelligent our children are? You won't be able to -"
"Daddy! You should be in bed!"
Booth and Brennan's head whipped around to find a somewhat annoyed Christine and a still sleepy Hank behind her.
"We were supposed to give you breakfast in bed for your birthday!" Christine exclaimed, throwing her hands up and walking towards them.
Brennan turned to look at her husband, eyebrows raised comically trying her best to stifle her laugh.
"Mommy, I'm still sleepy," Little Hank walked up to Brennan, rubbing his eyes. "Chrissy woke me up too early."
Out of all of them, Hank was the one who loved his sleep the most and, though she would never admit it, when she could, Brennan did enjoy sleeping in and was not as much of a morning person as she portrayed.
"That's cause it's Daddy's birthday! Happy birthday, daddy!" Christine exclaimed, throwing herself into her dad's arms. Booth held on to her tightly, kissing her forehead.
"Thank you pumpkin!"
"Happy birthday Daddy!" Hank exclaimed, followed by a yawn. Booth laughed and reached over to ruffle his son's hair. "Thanks, Tiger."
Hank climbed up beside Booth and leaned into him. Booth brought his arm around him and pulled him close while Christine sat on his lap.
Brennan looked at them and smiled. She leaned over and kissed his cheek wishing him a happy birthday again and offered to get him some coffee. As she was coming back, the tablet they had docked on the kitchen island started beeping and Brennan brought it over to the coffee table in the family room. She already knew who was calling.
"Happy birthday Dad! Happy birthday Seeley!"
Booth guffawed as he saw Parker and Rebecca's faces pop up on the video call.
"Hey, guys! Thank you!" He looked up at Brennan who simply smiled, placing his coffee on the table, winked as she headed back into the kitchen. Hank and Christine were very excited to see their older brother and "Aunty Becca." Booth spent time catching up with them and after a while, Brennan joined them.
"So Temperance, how's it been not being at the lab so often. I know it's an important part of your life," Rebecca asked. She and Brennan kept up with each other but not as regularly as they used to given the pandemic and Rebecca trying to figure out a new job. There was also a time where Rebecca felt antsy around Brennan, not really sure how to relate to her but seeing how much happiness Brennan gave her ex and the life she gave him that Rebecca couldn't, she'd grown to love her. It also made Rebecca happy to see how much Brennan really cared for Parker and got along with him.
"It's been weird not being there every day but the time I've spent with my family has been extremely rewarding."
"Yeah, I think we're all going to feel even weirder when things go back to normal," Booth added.
They talked about Parker's upcoming article that was being published, their respective plans for the holidays, and that there was even a surprise coming in the mail for Booth on his birthday. Booth was the kind of man who didn't necessarily like too much attention on him or being doted on. He was the person who did that for his loved ones, that was his thing but upon hearing his rebuttal that they didn't need to give him anything, both Rebecca and Brennan shushed him.
Parker and his younger siblings chatted for a while. "So how's Lily doing?"
"Lily? Who's that?" Rebecca's brows furrowed a bit confused.
"Haha, yeah, about that," Booth chuckled. He and Brennan then briefly explained to Rebecca the case Aubrey had gotten, them being foster parents, wanting to adopt Lily depending on how the case closed. Rebecca took it all in stride, blown away by how big Brennan and Booth's hearts were. The typical notion of stepping in and saving the day was Booth through and through but for Brennan to also be on board, Rebecca regretted ever once believing that she was cold.
"Speaking of, I'll go check on her." Brennan excused herself and left at the same time Parker left for a brief moment to go get some water.
"Four kids huh, Seeley."
"Yeah, I hear ya Becs," he chuckled.
"Well, I always knew what a family man you were. And… What an amazing father you are. That little girl is lucky to have you as a father now, Seeley." Rebecca smiled at him. She'd long since made peace with their past but she also knew how much it meant to Booth to hear those words. She knew about his father and his concerns about his line of work.
"Thanks, Bec… That means a lot coming from you."
Parker and Brennan came back on a few seconds later and Lily was still fast asleep in Brennan's arms. Rebecca gushed over her and they spent a few more minutes online before wishing Booth happy birthday again and logging off. Booth sighed happily after saying goodbye to them.
"Why do I feel like you had something to do with that?" he asked Brennan and smiled seeing her sitting there with all three children around her.
"I may have sent Rebecca a text last week. But she was in fact the one who asked me a while ago as I was getting your coffee if you were awake already."
At that moment, Lily started cooing and shifting around in Brennan's arms.
"Hey! Look who's awake," Booth grinned and reached over for her.
"Mommy, does this mean that we can make breakfast now?" Christine asked, making funny faces at Hank who was also starting to fully wake up from his groggy state of mind.
"Yes, we can sweetheart. Do you want to help make the pancakes?"
"Yes, please! And can we make some chocolate chip ones?" Brennan smiled at her daughter and ran her fingers through her hair as she stood up. "Yes, we can. Booth, do you want anything specific?"
"Nah, Bones, I'll eat whatever you cook." He flashed her his charm smile as he was cooing to Lily.
"Okay, that means you'll love the oatmeal I'm planning on making," she flashed him an impish grin and laughed when he looked up at her shocked.
"Please tell me-"
"Yes Booth, I'm only kidding." She shook her head and went into the kitchen with Christine.
Booth figured she was only kidding but breathed a sigh of relief.
"Your Mom's not gonna stop until she feeds me some of her birdseed," he whispered to Lily. Hank laughed overhearing his father's comment and Booth quickly shushed him before Brennan could hear. It was still early in the morning, and he still had the whole day ahead of him but Booth could tell it'd be a good birthday, maybe even his best.
Okay, so here we have it! Part 2 of Booth's birthday. The next chapter will wrap it up and we'll start progressing into Lily's case and finding the resolve for that. I'm definitely planning on wrapping up the year with them all still in quarantine and then looking at coming out of quarantine slowly, trying to keep them on a similar pace as us (as much as I can). Please leave me a review and let me know what you thought! Thanks for reading!
