Dayton, Ohio
1948
The sunset over the vast farmland, rays of light bouncing off the freshly dusted cornstalks.
On the edge of the filed stood a little farmhouse.
Beside it, a modest little airplane hanger, it's sole occupant, an open cockpit bi-plane sitting at the edge of a dirt runway.
And just one-hundred yards away, a small flower garden, at the center of which was black gravestone.\Engraved on both sides was a message.
In Memory of Commander James "Hutch" Hutchinson and Lieutenant Colonel Cain "Devil Anse" Adams
And the Lost Members of Liberty Squadron.
Aim High.
The flowers rustled as a tiny, cream-furred hand passed over them, the own of the hand being a little, auburn-furred boy in a pair of coveralls and a t-shirt, his mismatched hazel and amber eyes gazing at the pretty flowers.
Nearby, his parents watched with deep fondness.
The two retired pilots smiled sadly at the scene, happiness at the family they had, but sadness at memory of those they had lost.
Walking up behind her husband, Terra encircled her arms around Sam's middle, pressing the side of her face into his back as he clasped her hands with one of his own.
Patting his wife's hands as a signal for her to let go, Sam walked over to his son, crouching down so that he could look in the toddler's eyes.
"Hey Cain," he whispered with a laugh, "How'd you like to go flying?"
The boy's eyes instantly lit up. And before the father even knew it, the boy had bolted past him toward the parked plane, his parent's laughs joining his own.
And before long, the boy, aviator hat on his head, was feeling the breeze run through his fur as the plane flew along, his rear sitting firmly on his father's lap as he handled the controls as the two flew into the sunset.
Cain Davis would join the Air Force during Vietnam, eventually rising to the ranks of "Full Bull" Colonel.
Born to fly like his parents...
As a Rogue who partied with the Devils and flew with the Angels.
