"Honey you're fifteen. I don't have a choice. I have a duty of care over you. I have to call your parents. I'm sorry Lizzie." Liv explained
"Moms just gonna cry and dads gonna go and kill someone." Lizzie lamented.
"I'll be right here when you tell them. Or I can tell them for you. But they need to know so they can support you honey."
Neither Liv nor Elizabeth got much sleep the previous night. Lizzie had finally dropped off about 4am but she was tossing and turning and Liv had to wake her a few times when she started thrashing and became agitated. Liv gave her some toast for breakfast which she ate very little of before broaching the subject of telling her parents. "I'm going to ring them and ask them to come over. It will probably take them about 45 minutes, then when they get here we can tell them. Together." Liv told Elizabeth who bit her lip. "Don't worry about your dad. I can handle him."
"Liv. They've got enough to worry about with Mo, Lee, Dickie and Eli. They shouldn't Have to worry about me." Lizzie said talking about her siblings. "Mo's got this boyfriend and it's getting serious but dad's not happy because he's not a catholic and won't come to mass with us. Lee's still struggling with her mental health. Dickie keeps on skipping class and Eli's acting out. I'm the easy kid. My parents shouldn't have to worry about me. They don't have time to worry about me. I'll be fine, I have to be fine." She tried to explain. "Oh honey, nobody is perfect. I know you'll be fine, I'm sure your parents worry about you anyway. I know they love you very much. I know you're scared Lizzie but this is for the best."
Olivia put the TV on and there was a rerun of friends on but Elizabeth wasn't watching it. She was huddled in on herself in an armchair. Olivia rang Elliot
"Stabler"
"Elliot it's Liv"
"Hey Liv, please don't tell me Cragen called us in. I'm meant to be watching Dickies baseball game."
"No, but I need you to come over to mine. Elizabeth is here."
"Elizabeth, why?"
"I would much rather tell you in person, bring Kathy with you."
"Olivia. What the hell is going on!? She's meant to be at her friends house!?"
"Elliot I'm not having this conversation until you and Kathy get here. I know Mo and Lee are home. Get one of the girls to take Dickie to baseball. Elizabeth needs her parents right now."
"Liv, you're worrying me now. Is Elizabeth okay?"
"Just get here El"
"Okay. Tell Lizzie we're on our way"
"Lizzie, you're parents are coming. They'll probably be about 45 minutes." Olivia told her but Lizzie didn't react. This must be her way of coping. To totally withdraw into herself. It reminded Liv again how little she knew about the shy, bookish girl. She'd seen all of Elliot's other children's coping mechanisms. Maureen would always talk about her problems now she was an adult. Kathleen struggled more and due to her mental health struggles would often use alcohol or stop taking her meds when she was stressed causing her to become manic or depressed. Olivia wondered which was worse. A daughter who was so depressed she couldn't get out of bed or a daughter so manic that she didn't sleep and would become psychotic. When things weren't going well for Dickie he'd get angry. So much like his father. And little Eli was not much more than a baby and would cry and throw a tantrum. "Lizzie" Olivia said and again she didn't react. So she said the teens name again and touched her on the shoulder causing her to flinch and stiffen. "Sorry Elizabeth, sorry honey." Olivia said coming round to face the girl. Olivia was angry at herself she knew better than to touch a rape victim who wasn't expecting it. "I've just spoken to your dad. And him and your mom are on their way. Okay, but I'm right here with you. Did you want some tea or coffee?" Liv asked and Lizzie shook her head. The uncomfortable silence in the apartment continued until Elliot and Kathy buzzed up to Olivia's apartment. The noise caused Elizabeth to panic. "Lizzie. Look at me honey. Whatever happens now, no one is angry or upset at you, and if you need to stay here then you can do that okay. The most important thing now is that we can support you to feel as safe and comfortable as possible."
The two minutes it took her parents to take the elevator to the apartment felt like two hours to Lizzie, she just wanted to get it over with now. Elliot knocked on the door and Liv gave Elizabeth a little smile before opening it. As soon as Elliot saw Lizzie he was worried. She was sat huddled on an armchair, in a huge NYPD hoodie which had probably been his arm some point. She black eye and a massively bruised cheek. "Lizzie sweetie what happened?" Kathy asked rushing toward her daughter. "I was...I was raped momma." Lizzie whispered tears in her eyes. Kathy's hand flew to her mouth and her legs began to falter and she sank back on to the sofa "oh God." Elliot had a totally different reaction. He strode toward his daughter "WHO DID THIS TO YOU LIZZIE?" He yelled. "I'M GONNA KILL THEM."
"El," Liv said standing in front of Lizzie blocking him from her "get a hold of yourself. This reaction isn't helping anyone."
"HOW THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT ME TO REACT WHEN MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER HAS BEEN RAPED" he continued.
"Right so get a hold of yourself because this is about Elizabeth not about you. If you need to go into the bathroom and take a second then you know where it is." Liv said calmly. Elliot turned away from them all and counted to ten to calm himself down. He knew it was a cliche but it worked for him. "What do you need from me right now Elizabeth?" Kathy asked. "I honestly don't know mom. I feel so...I don't know...dirty,disgusting, damaged." Elizabeth squirmed in her seat and Kathy was devastated. No teen should feel that way. Ever! "I just feel so stupid." Elizabeth lamented, tears in her eyes. "You always told me never to walk alone in the city at night, but I did."
"Hey Elizabeth. Stop that." Liv told her. "This is not your fault. You mustn't think that. You did everything you could. You came to the precinct. You had a rape exam." Liv looked over at Kathy "we went to Mercy hospital, I know neither you nor Lizzie would want any gossip spreading around your workplace." Kathy smiled in thanks and Liv turned back to Elizabeth "The nurse told me how hard you must have fought honey, from all your cuts. It's not your fault!"
"I tried to make him stop dad. Honestly I did." Lizzie pleaded. "I know honey. I know." Elliot agreed. "You did everything right, you got hurt and you went straight to the precinct, you told Liv what happened and you let her take you to the hospital. That's the best thing you could have done." Elliot explained.
"Dad do you hate me now?" Lizzie whispered eyes wide looking up at her father. Kathy had to stifle a sob. "No honey, God no. I Love you and your mom and brothers and sisters more than anyone else in the world." Elliot reassured his daughter. "But your angry?" Elizabeth questioned. "Yes, I'm furious but not at you Lizzie. I'm furious at the guy who did this to you."
"You're not mad that I'm not a virgin anymore?" Lizzie asked "because we are Catholic?"
"Not at all honey, you didn't have a choice. It's not your fault." Elliot reiterated. "Lizzie honey, you know I had Maureen a few months after me and your dad got married right. We're far from perfect and we made a choice. A choice you didn't have." Kathy explained.
"I guess I never thought of that." Lizzie mused tearfully. "Lizzie. Do you know what makes a girl a virgin? It's a piece of tissue in your vagina called the hymen. Usually it will break when a woman has sex but some peoples break way before that, doing sport, riding a bike, sometimes even putting in a tampon. It means nothing." Olivia told Elizabeth.
"Mom, can I stay with Olivia? I just need some rest, and home is a mad house right now. Just for a couple days. It not like I need to worry about school because it's spring break for another week. She's says it's okay. I don't want my sisters or brothers to find out. Mo will just wanna talk. Dickie will be so mad and I don't know what Lee will do?" Elizabeth asked quietly. With her sisters home from college. Elizabeth would have no peace at home. As a child she shared a room with her twin brother. Dickie would do anything to protect his any of his sisters but his twin especially. As they got older Elizabeth ended up sharing rooms with Kathleen. And when Eli came along just before Maureen had gone to college he took the room that used to be Maureen's. So since the eldest girls didn't live home all the time, when they were home they bunked in with Lizzie. "Are you sure Olivia?" Kathy asked. "Your family are always welcome here. And all i want is for Lizzie to feel as comfortable and safe as possible, and if that means staying here then that's fine by me." Liv answered. "I'll have to work but Lizzie is welcome to stay. Although I can't cook nearly as well as your mom, and I'm not a nurse." Liv smiled at Lizzie. "Mom, dad I'm really sorry but the man took my purse, it didn't have much in, mainly lip balm and tictacs but it did have 20, my house keys and my cellphone. Luckily my MP3 player is at home. I know it's a lot to ask but would I be able to get a birthday gift early of a new phone? Please? Or I could do loads of chores to pay you back or something?"
"Of course honey, we could go now." Kathy smiled. "Please, could you get me one. I really don't want to go out like...this." Lizzie said with disgust. "Lizzie, you're beautiful, you always have been and always will!" Kathy told her daughter, something she'd often told each of her daughters. Body confidence crisis were par of the course of being a teenage Stabler girl it seemed. "I just don't want people to stare at me, plus I'm just exhausted." She said defeated. "Hey, why don't I go get you a phone, just tell me which model and contract you want , and you can have some time with your parents?" Olivia asked. Lizzie reached out and grabbed Olivia's hand "no please stay Liv!" That was like a stab in the heart to Kathy. She liked Olivia, honestly she did. She'd saved her husbands life, her own life, her youngest sons life. She'd helped Kathleen when she was consumed by her mental illness. And now Elizabeth. Elliot spend more time with Olivia than he did with her...his own wife! She liked Olivia, but she was jealous. Jealous because she knew Elliot told her things he'd never tell Kathy, jealous of her kindness and empathy and jealous that she had an ability to connect with Kathleen and now Elizabeth in a way Kathy herself couldn't. She was greatful, but she was jealous. Ironically Olivia was jealous of Kathy. Olivia would give anything to be a mom. She'd looked into adopting but had been found unsuitable because of her long hours and lack of support. Plus Kathy got to love Elliot, but she couldn't think like that. They were married and they were Catholic. It wasn't meant to be!
"Okay Honey, why don't your dad and I go and get you a phone, and you stay here with Liv? We can get you some groceries as well. What do you need Liv?" Kathy asked. "Just the basics, bread, milk maybe some fruit. I don't really cook much. I pretty much live on takeouts." Olivia smiled wryly. "Elizabeth enjoys cooking. Maybe she can make you something if she feels up to it. What do you think Lizzie?" Kathy asked her daughter. "Do you like Cottage pie Liv?" Lizzie asked shyly. "I'm not sure I've ever had it Elizabeth, but I like most foods so I'm sure I would."
"I can get you the ingredients and then you can make it if you feel up to it, and if not you can bring them back home. Okay?"
"Okay." Lizzie looked over toward the kitchen. "Maybe it would be nice to cook when I ache a bit less."
