Anubis Cruger watched her from the shadows of the roof topjust like he had many times in the past. Dressed in white, her lithe body stood erect in stark contrast to her dark surroundings. Just like she had before, she tilted her head up and gazed upon the stars as if they were talking to her. He knew as well as she did that she would receive no information from them. They would only mock her in silence. Yet, still she came here.
Cruger let his breath escape him. It was a beautiful picture to behold, sad but beautiful, and it seemed that every night he gazed on her, she seemed more vibrant and ethereal than she had previously been. Her green eyes would glow with the city lights and the starlight seemed to dance upon her skin like a mist. He let his eyes be transfixed by her lips as she parted them slightly to draw in a deep breath.
Subconsciously copying her, he let himself move to her side. "Can I join you?" He asked her in hushed tones, feeling as if he might break her with the sound of his voice. He knew it was foolish to think so. She was a strong woman, even if she didn't look it. A smile twitched at the corner of the lips he had just been admiring, and she slipped into his arms.
"Of course you can," she said with her eyes never leaving the sky.
He glanced down at her head resting on his shoulder and then followed her gaze upward toward the constellation of Cassiopeia, towards her home. Frowning he glanced down at her again. "What's wrong?" He asked.
She pulled away, leaving the parts of his body that she had been snuggled against cold. It was a stupid question to ask, that mush he knew, but he also knew that she needed someone to talk to. "I miss it, Doggie," she said softly. "I miss my home. I miss my husband and my children. Even after all of these years. I can't believe they're gone." He watched as twin streams trickled down her face glinting with the soft glow of the city. "But, I need to move on."
She hadn't spoken about much of her past, but for what it was worth he had taken down Grumm for both of their sakes. He knew only half of what her pain felt like. He couldn't possibly begin to understand what it might be like to lose a child. Let alone five. In tragic memories he recalled findingher pregnant and dying. He remembered mourning with her when after all was said and done, she had given birth to the fifth a stillborn lost to radiation poisoning.
They had slowly become friends after the horrors that they suffered and they helped each other through their toughest times. Yet now, standing here, they were at a stalemate in their relationship. He knew it, and so did she. The only thing they could do was move forward. Once again he hugged her to him and this time his exceptional hearing picked up a sound that he would remember forever. For thishe thanked the stars. Between her purring, he heard her murmmer, 'I love you."
